With accessories ranging from security blankets to stool covers, bed book tidies, placemats and toy bags, this collection features over 20 animal-themed designs to crochet.
I really like Crochet Animal Rugs: Over 20 Crochet Patterns for Fun Floor Mats and Matching Accessories! The instructions are clear, and there are graphs provided for almost every single pattern. There's an excellent glossary and basic stitch instructions at the back for reference. Above all, I like that there are multiple patterns/accessories for each animal, and there are several animals that I think are really cute. I often find I end up purchasing books like this for one pattern and the rest are just dead weight -- that's not the case here.
My only quibble is a minor one. I found it unusual that the book starts with the most complicated pattern and works its way back to the easier patterns. And there aren't really many "easier" patterns in the book at all -- most require some advanced skills.
Ira Rott has created some really adorable designs here, and I think the book would be worth the price for the Elephant patterns alone. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who likes to crochet sweet little animal designs. 4.5 stars rounded up to 5.
Thank you to NetGalley and F+W Media for a DRC of this book.
This is a beautifully illustrated book of animal-themed crochet projects, ideal for decorating a child's bedroom. Choose from Jeffrey (or Josefina) the elephant, Rusty the Giraffe, Sassy the Cat, Rock 'n' Roll Panda, Chip the Monkey, Cranky the Crab or Tops the Dinosaur, and for each one there is a floor rug, a cushion/pillow and one other accessory. The accessories include things like book bags, a stool cover and security blankets. Out of the 7 animals there is not one single dud - they are all gorgeous. The difficulty might be choosing which one to start with.
And that's where the book comes into its own, with pages and pages of extra useful information and guidance. The patterns have a 3-level skill grading; beginner, moderate and challenging. Although none of the patterns are graded for beginners (most are moderate and some challenging), I'd say a determined beginner (not a novice, though) would be able to follow the additional support materials to produce a decent result on a moderate project. How awesome!
So what are these materials? The author has included general things like terminology conversion (from US to British), hook and yarn weight conversion, reading patterns and charts, and advice for left-handers. More specific guidance is also included in terms of crochet techniques like how to actually make the different stitches (with diagrams), how to change colours, starting, finishing, and sewing stitches for putting the projects together.
At the project level you can choose whether to follow the pattern (i.e. written instructions) or the chart. Elements that might be a little tricky have additional diagrams so you can see what to do. Anyone who has some experience with amigurumi crochet will find these patterns quite straightforward, I think. But I should point out that although I have read through some of the patterns, I have not actually tested any of them for accuracy. They do read as being accurate though.
A lovely book.
With thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy to read and review.
Thank you NetGalley and F+W Media for an early release copy of this.
Ira Lott really took her care in setting out easy to follow instructions with amazing charts and pictures to go with them. She was also kind enough to included some basics in the back for anyone new to crochet or new to getting back into crochet. I have dug into my yarn stash and tried a couple of the patterns.
The Monkey Pillow: This pattern was mega easy and I was able to finish the pillow in the course of a weekend. I love working in the round with crochet, so I was really excited that she had so many circular patterns. I'm sure my nephew is gonna love it!!!
The Crab Rug: This one was a little less exciting of a pattern buuuuut we needed a new rug for the bathtub. This one too was well broken down, clearly described and had amazing charts! I love when a crochet book not only included pictures of the final product, but progress photos as well so you can make sure it's turning out right before you've finished.
There are so many cute patterns I can't wait to try the rest! Some of the patterns are advanced but there are lots of easy ones to start with so anyone can pick this up and get some super adorable animal accessories.
This book is AMAZING....the best crochet book I’ve come across so far. I’ve seen Ira’s crochet projects all over the internet and have been drooling over them! I’m so excited to finally try them. She is so talented and wonderfully creative.
The book contains easy-to-follow written patterns, along with charts - for anyone who struggles with written patterns. There are numerous illustrations, which I find very useful and she’s even included skill levels. She discusses techniques, stitches, left-handed crochet and so much more! I can’t praise this book enough.
Thank you to NetGalley, F+W Media and Ira Rott for this ARC in exchange for my honest review! #CrochetAnimalRugs #NetGalley
What a perfect book of patterns for keeping your children or grandchildren happy. The book has colorful illustrations, easy to read patterns and a wide variety of animals. From dinosaurs to kittens it includes 20 patterns. Also a primer of how to crochet the stitches in the book along with techniques to keep you crocheting on the neat and perfect path. The nice thing is also not only the rug pattern but pillows or placemats, blankets and more with each animal. I do think buying the hardcopy of the book would probably be better because of the breaking up of pictures and instructions in the digital format. Perfect gift for the crafter on your list. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
I can see my crochet hooks will be put to good use in making some of these wonderful children's animal rugs and matching accessories.. I know my youngest grandson will love the Dinosaur and my youngest granddaughter, the Kitty Cat. I myself rather like the elephant. The instructions appear to be easy to follow. There are good general techniques, such as blocking and non-slip lining.
Unless it's my Kindle, there does appear to be some illustrations missing, especially at the beginning of the book. Could be the formatting, but the main thing was that there were enough illustrations to see what a particular rug looked like and all the instructions were absolutely fine.
I would like to thank Netgalley and the Publishers for my copy. This is my honest review.
What a great book!! Patterns for any skill level of crochet. There is a wide variety of items and animals. This book also contains step by step instructions along with pictures to show your progress. It would be very beneficial to get a paper copy of this book since there is so many stitches and pictures. You could get a magnet and board to place on either side to get the project done easier.
I received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
After spending hours online, I found reading Crochet Animal Rugs like a sorbet for the mind. It is adorable! This super fun book features more than 20 crochet patterns for rugs and matching accessories. The giraffe security blanket is soooooo cute! Also includes a delightful cat, monkey, elephant, dinosaur, bear, and crab, each with a matching pillow and accessory, each as darling as the next. 5/5
Thanks to F + W Media and NetGalley for the ARC. Opinions are mine.
This book is so cute, and has a lot of adorable patterns. Each rug pattern comes with coordinating accessory patterns, so in addition to a cute rug you can also make a matching stool cover or book bag or pillow.
Each pattern is clearly labeled with the skill level as well as the finished size, tools and materials needed, stitches and skills used, and even whether the pattern is left-handed compatible.
I love that the animals include a giraffe, elephant, monkey, dinosaur, crab, panda, and a cat. There's also a section on basic shapes, like eyes and bows and things, so between the various shapes available from the existing patterns and these extra basic shapes, a savvy crafter could conceivably craft an even wider array of creatures. I personally have big plans to make a boy and girl crab pillow, with the boy crab having a bow tie and the girl crab having a bow in her "hair."
This book is SO cute. I am obsessed with just about every single project in here and I am determined to hone my crochet skills to get some of these projects started (and hopefully completed!) If you don't know how to crochet - there are a bunch of ages or tips and tricks and if that doesn't work, a YouTube video will have you up and running in no time!
The rugs are so cute. They aren't all rungs - there are some pillows, and I think some of these could totally be used as blankets! Toy bags, chair covers, etc. ALL adorable. Great projects to make for kids (or adults lol) and every single one of these would make amazing gifts! The crabs are definitely my favorites- a rug and a pillow. There is something for everyone!
If you crochet, you need to get this book! The designs are super cute, the instructions are very easy to read, plus there are color-coded charts if you prefer those. Most of the designs are based on a beginner’s stitch with more complex parts added on if you choose.
The book is full of full-color photos and gives several ideas to modify the designs. The author gives helpful insights and tips throughout the book and rates each pattern to let you know what to expect.
She also begins the book with what is needed as well as the types of stitches to expect, which is very helpful for a beginner.
Though many of the designs are shown to be used as children’s gifts, some can be modified for the animal lover in your life.
The only issue I have with this book is the title. Yes, it has rugs, but it has so much more in it! This is a great book for those who want to create happiness through crochet.
Thank you to BookishFirst and the publisher for giving me an advanced copy to read. All opinions are my own.
Crochet Animal Rugs is a good guide to a unique crafting project. The book features absolutely adorable patterns for rugs, pillows, and other decor for children's spaces. With animals ranging from dinosaurs to kittens to elephants, there is something to suit any child's tastes! While some of the patterns are much more involved than others, even the patterns that aren't as demanding are aesthetically very nice. The book doesn't have much that is accessible to beginners, but it strikes a good balance between dazzling-but-challenging designs and appealing patterns that are more intermediate in nature. I thought the inclusion of matching pillows and accessories to go along with the rugs and tie them into a space was really clever, and some of the accessories are very impressive.
The rugs and pillows include many intricate elements, like eyes and three-dimensional aspects, but the book includes special guides to more difficult features at the end. The only downside to the book is that, while it advertises having 20+ patterns, only seven of them are actual rug designs.

I won this book from Bookish First. I like that this book has a section dedicated to crochet techniques such as changing colors when crocheting, weaving in yarn ends, raw edge finishing, bottom of foundation chain, working with 2 or 3 strands, flat circles and left handed crochet which is useful if you’re left handed. I’m right handed so that doesn’t apply to me but I still found it interesting anyway. I like that there’s a section in this book dedicated to crochet terminology and abbreviations. I like that this book talks about the different sewing stitches you can use when crocheting and it also talks about how to do blocking after crocheting something. This book also has a section in the back for beginners with patterns for common shapes such as eyes, bows and pillow bases. The animal patterns in this book are really cute and I was really looking forward to using these patterns so I could have a crochet project to do but I realized when I was reading the patterns in here that they’re too advanced for me. I’m disappointed that I can’t use this book. I know how to crochet but I still consider myself to be a beginner at crochet so I feel like I would do better with crochet patterns for beginners. The only things I found helpful in here was the information for beginners and I can easily find that information on the internet.
Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for providing me with a free eARC in exchange for an honest review.
For quite some time, I've thought that crochet is a hobby easily learned. I have found, through many attempts, that it takes a bit of a knack for it and that you definitely will need some initial help along the way. And of course, there are only so many scarves you can work on before you need to try something a little more advanced. Or just something new! And so when I saw that you could make adorable animal rugs, I had to try my hand at it.
I found that the first few designs in the book were actually a little more complicated than some of the patterns in the middle/back of the book. So before you begin a project, you may want to scan through the pages in order to decide where you're comfortable starting. If you're new to crochet, you may not want to start with the most complicated rug. I'm in that category! But there is good news: there are many diagrams and pictures to help guide you, which is nice to have because you can stare right at it as you try to begin your new crochet rug.
I enjoyed this very much and although I'm definitely going to need some more time to hone my craft (some people are naturals with crochet I am told.... I'm not one of them) this is definitely a great collection of projects to start with. While you may assume they're animal rugs solely designed for children... I have a lot of adult friends that are hoping I get the hang of this so that I can begin making them some animal decorations!
Ever since I discovered crochet last year, I've been on the look out for new ideas and patterns to try out. As soon as I saw the adorable rug and pillow on the cover of Crochet Animal Rugs, I just knew I had to know more about these patterns. And I have to say they are absolutely adorable. If you are looking for interesting and cute patterns to brighten up your child's bedroom or gift something adorable to someone else, you will be in for a treat. There are patterns for beginners as well as advanced crocheters, indicated accordingly. There is even advice for left-handed crocheters like myself, which is highly appreciated. This book uses US terminology, but there are useful conversion charts included if you need to convert to different terminology. In the back, stitches are explained clearly with pictures, helping you understand which is which. Also, the making of eyes and bows are explained separately as well as basic pillow shapes. That and other crochet techniques and other ideas of using the patterns. I love the idea of the wall decorations! My absolute favorite of the patterns is between the elephant rug and pillow, and I love the kitty cat placemat and rug as well. The crab security blanket is adorable and the dinosaur theme perfect for a little boy! There is definitely a lot to love in this crochet book.
Crochet Animal Rugs by Ira Rott has cover art that is very inviting. With animal patterns that will fit the theme of many a child's room, crafters will delight in the projects - big and small - that make up this book. The author does a good job of explaining the art of crochet to newcomers, starting with an all important guide of how to use the book and its patterns. With charts for tools and materials, as well as descriptions of how to complete the finished pieces, crafters will be able to bring their hard work to fruition with Crochet Animal Rugs.
The projects range in difficulty level from beginner to challenging, so those new to crochet can get their feet wet with the Pillow Bases (p. 130-133), then move on to the more difficult parts of the pillow, like the Monkey Pillow (p. 81-86). As a newbie to crochet, the most important part, besides the guide at the beginning of the book, are the pages of crochet terminology, abbreviations, and how-to instructions. The author thoughtfully has included a special page of instructions for left-handed crochet artists. With cute animal projects for the monkey, giraffe, cat, panda, crab, and dinosaur lover, readers are sure to find inspiration in this book. As there is not a lot here for a beginner, Crochet Animal Rugs may be more applicable for the more experienced crafter. With bright, colorful pages and great instructions, I would definitely recommend Crochet Animal Rugs to other readers.
I have dabbled ( as I do with most things) in crochet multiple times. My crowning glories were the slightly tight winter hats I made for tons of people last year. When I decided to progress to something more cuddly, the online resources or those of my library did not get me excited about any particular project. Even once I began, the instructions seem to mumble instead of explain themselves to me. I have solely taught myself using books and YouTube so I thought that that must be the reason I was having difficulties progressing to making something more substantial.
When I cracked this book open( figuratively, since this is an advance reviewer's e-copy with an expiration date on it) I was delighted with the tons of instructions provided. Each of the designs comes as a set, a bag/rug/doll/blanket version of some very cute looking animals. After a cursory surfing through it,I concluded that this would be a book well worth keeping around for projects for both home and for gifting ( if they come out as good as they look in the pictures, I do not think I would have the heart to part with them). Even further reading of the book did nothing to change that opinion. I intend to get my own copy once I set up a time for me to crochet in!
Thank you to BookishFirst and Sew and So for sending me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book of crochet patterns is simply adorable. I loved the little stories and tidbits that went with each of the characters Rott has designed. They give the little critters a super personal touch.
I'll be honest--I don't crochet. I have tried in the past, and I'm not very good. However, Rusty the Giraffe has given me something to aim for. So, I'm sure some lessons with Grandma will be scheduled in the Very Near Future.
My only critique of this book (particularly as a non-experienced crochet person) is the location of the "easy stuff" in the back. It's more than a little intimidating to encounter Jeffery right after the introduction, and I flipped through the whole book thinking, "Is anything in here actually an 'easy' project?!" I of course stumbled across those eventually. Having them up front and then progressing to the actual projects may have served users better. I know it's in the Table of Contents, but I still felt the order was a little distracting.
(But if you've picked up this book and want the easy stuff, just know it's in the back!)
Here's hoping Rusty and I meet sometime in the near future!
This crochet book is amazing!!! So many cute patterns for kids and adults that are kids at heart. So many amazing patterns!!! I love how the book is set up. It has various patterns for all skill level for crocheting. Each pattern gives you the level and explains that level of skills you need to complete the project, which I felt was amazing because some books don't have this clearly marked. Each pattern also gives the finished size, the hooks that will be needed, the yarn weight, the number of strands you will need, the gauge hooks you will need, stitch summary, skills, and specific crochet techniques needed to complete the specific project. It even has the specific crochet techniques explained in the back of the book which are clear and easy to follow and other tips and techniques when it comes to some of the sewing parts and other informative information. Love this DYI crochet book. The layout is amazing, telling you step by step and even how to assemble the project. If you never crocheted before this might be a little challenging but if you are familiar with crocheting, this is definitely a book I would recommend. I even love the added piece about wall art. And has add-ons you can add to your projects as options to change it up some.
The word that comes to mind when I pick up Crochet Animal Rugs by Ira Rott is “Cute”.
Who couldn’t fall in love with the cute elephants? All the projects are cute and the instructions for each appear to be easy to follow and straight forward.
Anyone who has young children they want to crochet for will appreciate this book. Just don’t leave it where the kids can see it because they will want you to crochet each one in the book before you get a chance to catch your breath from the last one.

I really liked this book because of the way it was written. It's not just a book filled with patterns, it will take you from the first things you need to do before you start each project. It explains the stitches, what kind of yarn to use, and also the size of crochet hook to use. An important step it explains is how to check your gauge so that your project will turn out nicely! It also lists the abbreviations used in the patterns. It also has a chart you can follow, or the test to follow the pattern, your choice!
It also gives you a choice of what to make for each animal, for example-rug or wall hanging, and how to finish each project. There are also pillow patterns, stool covers, placemats and security blankets.
The best thing about this book is the ability to start to crochet and do not know how, because its step by step. This is the best book I have seen in a while, and I am so happy to use it while I get back into crocheting by starting with the simple patterns and making my way up through the challenging projects.
I gave this book 5 stars and will be looking for more books by this author!
I do a fair amount of handcraft needlecraft projects. My favorite is counted cross stitch, but I am not limited. I indulge in embroidery, crewel work, quilting, needlepoint, knitting and crochet. My skill level varies across these, being highest in cross stitch and lowest in crochet. Never mind, I keep practicing each of these as time permits. This book is very derailed for all skill levels. The instructions are, I think, more detailed than I have found in other pattern books. The author seems to want to challenge the highly skilled while not confusing the beginner. That is not easy in one thin book. And there are pictures. Lots of pictures and diagrams. This book should be in every crafter's library. I did try one of the simpler rug patterns with a smaller hook and thinner yarn because my goal was to make something for my dollhouse instead of my regular house. Gauge is everything in crochet, so it came out close to what I was planning. I received the book I read for this review from Bookish.
Librarian: I'm not sure if this book is a good fit for most libraries 600s section. Mostly because I can't figure out if this is supposed to be a children's nonfiction book or an adult one. On the one hand the cute animal patterns seem to be designed to appeal more to younger readers, on the other hand, the pattern seem like they would be too difficult for most younger crafters to handle. My only guess is that it's meant to be for older crafters who want to make the items for their children or grandchildren. If that sounds like your patrons, then this one should be picked up. Reader: First, let me say that I am not particularly skilled at crochet. I can do it, I mean I know how, I'm just not very good. Still it's something that I enjoy, in a relaxing sort of way. That being said, there is no way I could make use of this book. It simply is too involved and requires too many components (including multiple size hooks-I have one hook. It is sufficient for making scarves and washcloths.) Hard pass from me.
This book was a wonderful surprise! My daughter is the one who loves to crochet and right after having read the book, she asked me to go online and look up the author. Turns out that the author has a website where I found the next patterns to fall in love with.... This book has quite a number of patters for really cute and loveable looking rugs and pillows and bags and...other things inside. The explanations and instructions are well done and easy to follow. Apart from the patterns themselves, there are also very helpful general explanations and instructions on how to crochet and different sewing and crochet techniques involved. All those projects are really sweet and will brighten a child's room and I am very positive that the kids will fall in love with them. Those rugs and the pillows and other things that go along with them are sweet and charming and also not too difficult to make.
This book is excellent for any crocheter. It includes many explanations and tips to make each project successful. There is a guide for skill level for each pattern. Some are easy, some will take more time or assembly. The patterns consist of written instructions, progress photos, and charts. I think it is good to include charts and written instructions because many crocheters have a preference of one over the other. I love all of the general tips at the end for stitches and blocking. It also includes ideas for making wall art out of the patterns! The patterns are so cute! There are more than rugs included to give a whole room a theme. The items are sure to make many children and adults happy and cute additions to any room. The Jeffery Elephant rug is one that I have had my eye on for a long time, so I was happy to see it included in this book! I will recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this craft.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review, which has not altered my opinion of the book.
This book was so much fun! I really can't say that I read all of it, more I read what I could and stared in amazement at the rest. Honestly, the people who can read it are programmers in their own right because those things are complex! This book is not one that is meant for a beginner, but more for someone who knows a bit about crochet and has at least gone through their first few patterns. This book does not explain how to do the basics.
This book is perfect for people who have small children or nieces and nephews or other smaller children (or people who don't mind having animal bathmats). I for sure hope to learn a bit more about crochet and I think that this is something that, if I were to ever have children, I would love to be able to make for them. Overall, four point five out of five from me.
Crotchet Animal Rugs by Ira Rott was really cool and it made me want to start crotcheting! That's crazy right! Well it's true so you should definitely check this out. I like that it included a how to use this book for beginners, moderate and challenging levels. I liked that it had a grid that what to look for crotchet hooks and yarn. Not only in one country but multiple. It explained to you other materials that you would need as well and why those materials would come in handy. It shows you a certain item that you might want to make. It showed us a picture of what it should look like It told you everything that you need to make this item. It went step by step of what to do to make the rug and step by step for each part of the rug which was really cool. This book is really helpful and informational so you should definitely check it out. It'll make you want to pick this hobby up.
This book is just as inclusive as it is cute. This book is for all skill levels and even includes some tips and tricks. The patterns range from simple stitches to even the most complicated stitches. Everyone from novice to experts crocheters can enjoy this book. I know that many left-handed people are used to being left to figure out how to work a pattern in a different direction, but this book explains even that. You can slide from each row quickly with this guide because of how easy it is to understand what it is explaining what stitches it wants you to do. These patterns are also not as time consuming because of the ease of the explanation. These are something you can enjoy to create. They are beautiful and would serve as a super cute decoration in your house. From one crocheter to another, this book is something I would recommend to any and all aspiring crocheters.
This book is really cute. The final products are amazing. The issue is, there are missing parts to the pattern. There were no explanations for the abbreviations used. So it was unclear if the patterns were US or UK terminology.
Without knowing if the US or UK terminology is used the patterns are pretty much useless, unless you wanted to guess and hope for the best. I have yet to see a good pattern without an explanation of the patterns. So I’m hesitant to try the patterns. I don’t want to put dozens of hours in to realize my SC is actually US when it has to be UK. That small difference will change the rug and make me have to frog the whole pattern.
So while it is cute, without that guide, the book is useless to me. So I enjoyed the photos and the ideas. But I can’t just pick it up and go. If the abbreviations are explained in the introduction, then I missed it. Also people who just pick it up for patterns, will miss it. It feels like a big oversight.
As a self taught crocheter, I was never an expert at reading patterns or graphs, which this book provides in loads. For seasoned crocheters, the patterns and graphs are there for the reading. For someone like me, they can be quite intimidating. But this book is there to assist, stuffed to the brim with information on reading patterns, basic stitches, definitions, and even crocheting with the left hand. It is full of useful tips and tricks that make understanding the patterns and diagrams and creating your beautiful projects all the more easier.
The projects themselves are adorable. The animal designs are great for children to pick out their favorites, and the book provides multiple designs featuring each animal, giving you a multitude of different projects. I already have plans to make many of these designs for nieces and nephew's birthdays! Great book for the beginning crocheters.
