From writer Stacy McAnulty and illustrator Stevie Lewis, Moon! Earth's Best Friend is a light-hearted nonfiction picture book about the formation and history of the moon--told from the perspective of the moon itself.
Meet Moon! She's more than just a rock--she's Earth's rock, her best friend she can always count on. Moon never turns her back on her friend (literally: she's always facing Earth with the same side!). These two will stick together forever. With characteristic humor and charm, Stacy McAnulty channels the voice of Moon in this next celestial "autobiography" in the Our Universe series. Rich with kid-friendly facts and beautifully brought to life by Stevie Lewis, this is an equally charming and irresistible companion to Earth! My First 4.54 Billion Years and Sun! One in a Billion.
Stacy McAnulty is a children’s book author, who used to be a mechanical engineer, who’s also qualified to be a paleontologist (NOT REALLY), a correspondent for The Daily Show (why not), and a Green Bay Packer coach (totally!). She is the 2017 Ezra Jack Keats New Writer Honor Recipient for Excellent Ed, illustrated by Julia Sarcone-Roach. Her other picture books include Earth! My First 4.54 Billion Years, illustrated by David Litchfield; Brave and Beautiful, both illustrated by Joanne Lew-Vriethoff; Mr. Fuzzbuster Knows He’s the Favorite, illustrated by Edward Hemingway; and 101 Reasons Why I’m Not Taking a Bath, illustrated by Joy Ang. She’s also authored the chapter book series Goldie Blox, based on the award-winning toys, and The Dino Files. Her debut middle grade novel, The Miscalculations of Lightning Girl, will publish in 2018. When not writing, Stacy likes to listen to NPR, bake triple-chocolate cupcakes, and eat triple-chocolate cupcakes. Originally from upstate NY, she now lives in Kernersville, NC with her 3 kids, 2 dogs, and 1 husband.
I appreciate these books by Stacy. I loved her Earth book and this Moon book is also fantastic. She creates moon as being so lovable and then she peppers interesting facts all over the story of Moon’s life and how she works. She makes it really interesting.
My niece loved the Earth book and she saw this and wanted to read it with us. She loves what she learned about the moon. But she got a little worried that the moon would go away from us. Each year it moves an inch away from us. I told her not in her lifetime. It will be around for a long while. Something I learned is that the moon stabilizes our orbit, otherwise, it would be pretty wonky. The moon smooths out our orbit and keeps it dependable. That’s amazing.
The niece loved this book again and she gave this 5 stars. She wants to get the other book on the Sun, so I will. The nephew thought this was pretty cool. He liked the footprints left on the moon. He thought it was neat all the stuff that has been left on the moon, like a feather. He loved the picture of cows trying to jump over the moon and thought that page was hilarious. Cows are floating in space with helmets on. The book is saying no cow has jumped over her. It has a lot of humor in the story, so the nephew liked it. He enjoyed his sister reading with us again. He gave this one 4 stars.
“We have been together since the beginning almost. Let me tell you our story. Once upon a time... I don't disappear during the day, I'm always here for Earth My face always smile at Earth. I'm always here for Earth. I'm always here for you. Where Earth goes, I go. And where Earth goes, you go. Guess that makes us best friends too”
I'm moon lover, I Love the Moon soooo much, Tonight is Strawberry full Moon🍓🌕🍓, and this is a very cute and lovely picture book for the Moon lovers on Earth like me, in which the Moon tells us the story of his beautiful friendship with the Earth, with blue glowing starry illustrations, I loved it so much. So... Goodnight moonlight Goodnight moon lovers Goodnight stars Goodnight moon Be best Friends forever, Love you moon forever ~💙🌕💜
The kids and I love this trio of books about Earth, Sun, and now Moon! Moon has a cute, friendly personality befitting of the "Earth's Best Friend" subtitle. The illustrations are gentle and detailed, with lots of amazing color -- especially impressive since the moon is basically a white-gray ball. Moon is super cute. Worth checking out!
I love Sun and Earth too, but this one is, by far, my favorite. Moon is sweet and sensitive and very smart. Highly recommended - my Kindergartners will love!
This is such an adorable nonfiction picture book about the moon. Readers will learn about the formation of the moon, how long it takes to circle the Earth and to spin, the phases, other moons in the solar system, quite a bit about gravity, types of eclipses, and MORE interesting tidbits. This is the third book in the Our Universe series and it looks like Ocean: Waves for All is up next! The artist used colored pencils and digital tools to create the illustrations in this book.

Taking a similar approach to the one she used in her earlier picture books on space, Earth! and Sun!, the author relies on first-person narration on the part of Moon to introduce readers to Earth's satellite and best friend. The book contains solid information about the moon, including its origin, phases, influence on the tides and Earth's stability, and how eclipses are the moon's way of playing with her friend. While the playful approach used here might not be to everyone's tastes, I found it engaging and amusing, and many youngsters will too. The illustrations, which highlight Moon's personality, were created with colored pencils and digital tools. The back matter includes additional facts about the moon, including some numbers that put its size into perspective. It was good to be reminded that 12 men, no women, have walked upon the moon's surface.
Moon! Earth's Best Friend is the third children's picture book in the Our Universe series written by Stacy McAnulty and illustrated by Stevie Lewis, which stars the Moon as an exuberant celestial body with black doe eyes and a sweet smile, who is happy to tell its life story as the best friends with Earth.
McAnulty's text is rather simplistic and straightforward. It is an anthropomorphic story about the Moon and its relations within the Earth – who is its best friend. Additional notes could be found at the back of the book. Lewis' mixed-media cartoons work in perfect sync with the narration to share the astronomical tidbits with panache.
The premise of the book is rather straightforward. The Moon describes how it came into existence, explains the moon's phases, and details the way that gravity causes tides on Earth. Moon provides facts about itself and about various planets and their moons, while clearing up misconceptions and myths. McAnulty conveys complex concepts in a gentle, clear manner that provides solid foundation for learning more about space.
All in all, Moon! Earth's Best Friend is a wonderful history and importance of the Moon, albeit cursory, and a wonderful continuation to a children’s book series that I look forward to reading.
This is the third book in McAnulty's Our Universe series, and I can honestly say, it is every bit as good as the first two books - Sun! One in a Billion and Earth! My First 4.54 Billion Years. This is a playful information book narrated by the moon, who tells us that because earth is never without moon they qualify as BFFs. Kidding aside, there is lots of basic moon information to be found here, I particularly liked how moon differentiated itself as earth's only natural satellite, as opposed to all the man-made plastic and metal satellites "not exactly best-friend material." Distance from earth, phases of the moon, how gravity works on the tides are all covered, as is the weight differences between the two are all covered mixing humor with information. The illustrations, done with color pencils and digital tools, depict earth and moon as two friendly female faces, and are done in the same light-hearted manner as the text. This is a really informative, entertaining moon book with some very interesting lunar facts in the back matter. I shared this with my young readers, who didn't understand everything in it, but certainly began to learn and appreciate the universe around them more.
Moon! Earth's Best Friend is an entertaining way to share facts about the moon with young readers/listeners. Moon is the narrator, telling us about her relationship to Earth as well as her personal characteristics. Moon shares with readers facts about her size, being a natural satellite, and how she influences the earth through gravity. I especially enjoyed the part about Earth and Moon playing the 'game' of eclipse. Lewis's adorable illustrations beautifully complement the light, informative text. Earth and Moon truly look like pals who enjoy each other's company. The two truths and a myth questions at the end of the book adds a fun interactive element and the additional information is intriguing (I had no idea the moon had so many different names). A wonderful resource for teachers, and a fun book to read with young listeners.

McAnulty applies her talents to teaching us about the moon.
I was a bit surprised, because I guess I am a bit behind on my moon formation theories – I had no idea that the prevailing theory is that the moon formed from Earth debris after a collision billions of years ago. But McAnulty explains just enough for any young reader to get the gist of Moon facts in a very interesting way.
WOW! Can I give this 20 stars instead of just five? I went back and forth on reading this to my preschool group because I thought some of the concepts would be a bit challenging, but (of course ;) ) I underestimated them. This book's style makes it a wonderful storytime read - my group was enraptured (no easy feat with 30 kids cramped in a small space) asked questions about words they'd never heard (and the book gives fantastic, easy-to-understand definitions). I used a few props to demonstrate gravity as well. A must-read/highly, highly recommended for a PreK through first grade storytime. Kids will love the illustrations and text.
An ingenious informational fiction picture book on the history, phases, interactions with Earth, and a few "moon myths," told from the point of view of the moon. Although humorously anthropomorphizing the moon (as an "autobiographical" story), it remains a wonderful STEM nonfiction book. What a wonderfully, ingenious way to get moon and space facts in front of kids who "dislike" nonfiction books.
Earth's best friend- Moon!-tells her story in this fun picture book about what things she's experienced in her long life so far and how she gets along with Earth.
Vibrant artwork and additional information in the back will make this an educational and entertaining read-aloud.
What a way to get your youngest readers excited about space! This is the first I’ve read in Stacy’s space series, but I can’t wait to check out the others! Very personal voice, like she’s talking right to you! Many facts, but not overwhelming. Check out the back matter, including a fun quizlet!
My 5ths LOVED both EARTH and SUN, and I’m excited to add MOON and her story as we continue to integrate literacy into our science units through #classroombookaday!
Another winner from the team of McAnulty and Lewis. This series has been a favorite of the girls. Earth is still their favorite, but they've enjoyed all of them. Moon received many reads while we had it. Will likely purchase for our home. As with all the books in this series, the back matter is solid.
This book is as charming as its title, personalizing the moon while also sharing a wealth of scientific information. This book explains why the moon is significant to our life and well-being on earth, and illustrates her as the charming, trustworthy friend that most imaginative children see when they look up into the night sky.
My nephew loves this book. There are lots of fun facts about the Earth and Moon that even some grown ups might not have known. It’s illustrated beautifully.
