Short and Sweet

This was a very short audiobook that I put on because I had a few hours to kill. It was a very cute little story. The main characters, Kristen and Cameron were both intelligent and witty. The narration was great. Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber have narrated quite a few books I have listened to in the past and both are great. I really liked the fact that this was dual POV/dual narration even though it was a short read.

Kristen is an alternative fuel scientist who is sick of people (especially her grandmother Jeanne) fixing her up with men they assume she will click with. She has been on so many bad dates that she can’t take it anymore. She loves numbers and is great at mathematics so she decides that online dating is the way to go, especially when she sees a sight that picks matches for you using an algorithm.

I don’t want to get to into the main plot, but to say Grandma Jeanne meets a nice guy at a car buying auction that she thinks is perfect for Kristen but Kristen wants none of that. Jeanne is the epitome of a cool Grandma. She is in her 70’s and refuses to wear polyester or any other of those clothes that other members of her generation seem to favor. She buys sport cars at auction and fixes them up to give to her friends so they can get rid of the Buick’s, Caddy’s and other old people mobiles.

I really enjoyed the romance and the characters in this one and give it 5 stars for the enjoyability factor. It is nice to listen to novellas on audio that aren’t prequels. You can enjoy it for what it is and not have to start an entire series.

Imagine Sleepless in Seattle for the Instagram generation.
It's like a picture of a beautiful beach on a travel blog that has been cropped to remove the sewage treatment plant.
It just feels fake.

I'm sad this was so short...

****4.5 Stars****

Lucky Suit was bloody awesome. I can't believe Lauren Blakely would tease us with such interesting characters, catchy storyline and awesome narrators for it to be so SHORT!! I could have easily spent hours...days...weeks (maybe not weeks, let's not get too crazy) with Cam and Kristen.

Kristen has been set up by her feisty grandmother a few too many times with very little success. None of the men she's dated can hold a sensible conversation, and when they do talk, it doesn't leave her satisfied. Kristen is keen to find companionship but it has to be with someone who shares the same interests as her. It's time for Gram to put away her matchmaking crown, so Kristen can find her own perfect match.

Cam is a little unsettled, and when he visits his uncle, finds that the slower pace and scenery a little too appealing. When he meets an old friend at his uncle's car auction, they have a very interesting conversation about her granddaughter Kristen. He's intrigued, but what're the chances of them having things in common? How could they even contemplate dating when he lives in a different city? Maybe he should just leave the opportunity for romance and love up to chemistry and chance.

It was such a sweet love story that captured my attention from start to finish. There was even a little curveball to spice things up. These two had such an instant attraction and connection but there were still stumbling blocks along the way.

I loved Lucky Suit but I was disappointed that it was so short. The narrators do an AMAZING job and definitely brought the story to life for me. I got a shiver up my spine when at the end it was announced that one of the additional characters was getting her own story...BIRTHDAY SUIT!! WooHoo!! I'm getting more of Cam and Kirsten and a whole bunch of other characters in Lulu and Leo's story.

There wasn't much to it, but what there was, entertained me from beginning to end.

Fluffy, light, silly audiobook involving matchmaking grandmothers, online dating, and lots of flirting. Short and innocuous. Totally not my thing, but romance fans will probably enjoy.

This is really short and I think it's an Audible exclusive. I have no idea why that's even a thing, but hey, the investment is small (for the reader) and I've liked Lauren Blakely books before so I gave it a shot. And it's not bad. The length is about right because this couple starts off mega-compatible and have almost no bar in their way to becoming a couple. The banter is good and the side characters interesting (if a bit over the top).

So I'm going to give it four stars, though the negatives are pretty light. I liked it, but some elements didn't really work that well (like Kristen's grandma). If you're on Audible and it's still free, it's not a bad introduction to a decent author.

A note about Chaste: The relationship got to the stage where sex was the next step and Blakely skipped it. It happened and we learn generalities but nothing explicit at all. Which I consider chaste, but not everyone would make that same call. Personally, I suspect that with a story this short, it just didn't make sense to go into lots of detail on the physical intimacy. It's a good choice, I think.

Super cute, and I loved Kristen's Grandma. Crafty, sneaky and full of love!

Their kisses were magical, but I wished we got to experience Kristen and Cameron having couple time instead of being told of weekends spent together after the fact. It was a short book though, so I get it.

As usual, Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber's performance was a delight, and enhanced my enjoyment.

Cute book.. but nothing really happened.

Lucky Suit is one of those books that I dove into because of the author. I absolutely love Lauren Blakely and everything she writes. However, I feel like nothing happened in this book. Whether it was Kristen and Cameron having chemistry or basically saying that they will never work for some stupid reason. Overall, nothing really happened between these two.

There was no "drama" or anything that kept me on my toes. Just some grandma match making going on. Oh, and Kristen's grandma was basically my favorite character because she said the most random shit ever. Plus, she's a freaking genius for setting these two up. Even if they were stupid along the way.

Overall, I wished it was longer and that something actually happened in this audio.

This is awful.

Sam, why did you finish it? It's short! And I realized I'm, like, ridiculously picky about American narrators. So, I have to take a breather because favorite narrators are...limited.

But it's soooo cheesy sooo lacking in any kind of conflict whatsoever with the same lines repeated over and over again. I think I ended up hating it more.

It was free, but it is not worth the time.

I mean, it was nice. But yeah -- that's it. Nothing very much, or very important happened. It was fun enough to listen to, and short enough that it didn't drag. But it wasn't anything special or particularly amazing.

The writing was mediocre. The characters were mediocre. The humor was nice. The storyline was... mediocre.

It's forgettable, but a cute and sweet enough way to pass the time.

A cute story about a woman who had more than enough dating setups. Then she meets a guy in real life and realizes he’s the same perfect guy she was matched up with on line.
Good story! Lots of laughs with an interesting twist at the end.

Lucky Suit is book 6 of The Guys Who Got Away series by author Lauren Blakely. It is a standalone short-ish romance told from both points of view.

Kristen is an alternative fuel scientist (I already love her) who is tired of being set up one dud after another. Being a person who loves science and math, she believes in the power of logic, algorithms and online dating.

But her grandmother isn’t done meddling in her love life, especially when she meets Kristen’s perfect match. And Cameron is indeed perfect for her, but even when they meet in real life and hit it off, something isn’t quite right with the set up.

I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of saying how much I enjoy Lauren Blakely’s stories. Although this one was short (which is its only shortcoming in my opinion, see what I did there?) it packs everything I love in romance: great characters, witty banter, delicious chemistry and a great plot twist.

I listened to this audio book with a great narration by Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber loving it and wanting more.

Another free Audible original. The dialogue back and forth was quippy. The plot was uncomplicated. Not something I would have paid money for, but a decent enough use of a free monthly pick.

I'd rate this book a PG.

”Have I ever told you I love you more than the Milky Way?”

This is a really cute, short story. Within the first five minutes I was smiling and I thoroughly enjoyed the sense of humor in this book.

Kristen is geeky (she’s an alternative fuel scientist), very inquisitive and has a fun personality. She hasn’t had the best luck on the last few dates....
“Grams. He works at a funeral home. He told me all about embalming people . . . during a carrot pickling class.”
She tuts. “Fine, so he needs some work on social skills. Who doesn’t?”
“Plus, pickled carrots? Ewww. Just eww.”

She’s confident online dating is the way to go.
“I’m confident I’ll find someone online who shares my interests.”
“Question-asking, troublemaking, and high levels of sarcasm?”

Cameron owns a chocolate business and lives in New York. He does not believe in online dating and thinks meeting someone in person is the best way to go. He’s outgoing, likes philosophy and is sexy (of course). :)

And then there’s Grandma Jeanne. She was a hoot. She was bound and determined to help Kristen find true love. She’s one of those feisty grandmas that just makes you chuckle.
”Is this seat taken?”
She snaps up her gaze. “That depends on whether a handsome young man is going to park his butt on the hood of this car, or if some old fellow who smells like Vicks VapoRub will try to snag the coveted spot next to me.”

So grandma works her magic and brings these two together in her own unique way. 👍😁
We’ve been pranked, Kristen.”
“Oh, she definitely wins the prank wars on this one. She’s been pretending to be you and chatting with me.” She shakes a fist. I’m going to wring that dirty bird’s neck when I see her again.”

“She knew I only wanted to meet guys online, so she put the guy she wanted me to date online.”
“And she knew I wasn’t into online dating. But she wanted me to meet you. So she engineered a way for us to meet, each thinking it was exactly what we wanted—real life for me, and online for you.”

......oooohhh. Grandma is so sneaky. 👏👏 Lol.

Of course it works. ❤️ Whether chatting via text or face to face, these two have entertaining conversations.
“No one is secretly addicted to kale. So you’re either an alien or a robot or a celebrity on a fad diet, and I can’t date any of those. No one loves kale. It takes like ten years to finish one leaf.”

“I told you you’re a whole lot of fun? Like, more fun than monkeys in a barrel?”
“But how does anyone know how much fun monkeys in a barrel really are?”
“I don’t know. Has anyone ever put monkeys in a barrel and tried to have fun with them?”
“I hope not. That doesn’t seem like it would be fun for the monkeys.”

“Cameron: I’m not in the least bit surprised. Do you still skate, and when you do, do you wear those socks that go to your knees?
Kristen: You mean . . . wait for it . . . knee-high socks?”

This was a fun story, but really short. So, don’t expect any deep drama, high levels of angst or character depth. It’s just a light, quick, easy read that has some fun moments and a nice little HEA.

Quotes:
“What if he’s an ax murderer though?”
“He’s not, because I met him in person.”
“Question: do you think ax murderers wear name tags that identify them by profession?”

“My curiosity extends to the far reaches of the Milky Way and beyond”

“I believe fate is the creation of nonscientists. I believe luck is random happenstance and chance is simply a variable we scientists have to account for.”

“I gulp. I’ve been catfished. Catfished by a total creepozoid criminal, and I’m about to be kidnapped. I glance right, look left. A family of four strolls ahead of us. I’ll run to them. Wait, no. I’ll be putting their little toddler in danger. I’ll dart the other way, shouting fire!”

“Nothing says sexy like driving your hot new Ferrari to Bed Bath & Beyond.”

This was a not-blind-date, blind-date, long-distance romance that made me laugh out loud a few times, but also made me feel for Kristen's insecurities and cheer for the pair's happily-ever-after and behind-the-scenes Cupid(s).

If you're not a Blakely fan yet, you will be by the time you finish Lucky Suit. Enjoy!!

Audiobook narrated by Zachary Webber and Andi Arndt 2h 25 mins

One of my Audible original selections for February, this was a sweet little romantic comedy about the trying to find your other half in the digital age. The narrators were really delightful and certainly amped up this narrative and I liked how they were interwoven within each other's chapters. As per the storyline, it was a bit predictable, but that happens in this genre quite a bit. I have a lot of audios that have been a bit lengthy and so this was a nice break to have a short little listen.

4.5 short and sweet stars!

I listened to this short audiobook on my drive today and found myself smiling through most of it. I wish this was a longer story than it was instead of just a quick taste of an adorable story.

A meddling grandmother, a cute nerdy girl, a handsome chocolate store owner, a dating website, a car auction and a telescope. :)

Just like this novella I'm going to leave my review short and sweet!

3.5 - A cute, if predictable love story using the near anonymity of social media to create a Shop Around the Corner/You've Got Mail situation that, naturally, causes confusion and "chaos".
Cute, quirky, and a solid way to spend an afternoon with a good audiobook.

I you are looking for a funny, bite-sized romance I would definitely recommend Lucky Suit! It's pretty short, but well-paced and entertaining. Kristen is tired of set-ups and committed to trying online dating exclusively. Cameron refuses to try online dating and is determined to find someone through a real life connection. So when Kristen's independent and outrageously quirky grandmother meets the handsome Cameron, she decides to play matchmaker. It's a great little story and a perfect light escape for a couple of hours.

Okay, this one was absolutely atrocious. I chose it as part of the Audible's free monthly selection. February options were not resplendid. My first pick was a young adult sci-fi. And then for a while I debated. One of the selection was a production on the psychology of serial killers and it had fantastic reviews. However, I have just finished listening to the January's Audible podcast on a porn-star suicide, also a great product, and I felt like I just have had enough of brilliant grim listens for now.

So I looked at this. The reviews were good. It said "The New York Times bestselling author". I am interested in starting to write my own stuff in English, so I was curious to see how "The New York Times bestselling authors" write. Romance is not my favourite genre, but I was like "Okay, it will be a non-demanding listen and a writer skills investigation". And I got it.

Oh boy. This was atrocious. The writing was just BAD, in capital letters. I was like, okay, I'm not a native speaker, but this is just bad writing, plain and simple. The characters are ridiculous. Well, I liked the grandma who reminded me of Jane Fonda in Grace&Frankie somewhat, but the main female character? The "scientist"? What was that? She had a telescope and some dimwit lines about "science" and me the reader was supposed to believe she was smart? This was a written analogy of a female scientist in a porn video, made "sciency" by a white robe on top of a thong. And a telescope in the background.

I was very perplexed. And then I googled the author. And then I saw the covers of her best-selling books, which are all (all!) scarily similar photos of a naked make torso. And then I understood my mistake.

I really should have gone for that serial killer Audible Original.

What a cute but smart romance. Entertaining and fun, certainly enough to pass the time. I think this is my first LB novel and thanks to the audible monthly free listen program.

This book was short and sweet with no sexy times, not even fade to black. Can’t say I missed it and don’t think it needed it.

I like smart romances, so I may pick up another by this author when I’m in the mood for straight romance with little to no fire.

Light and sweet -> exactly what I wanted from this short story. The best part might be the granny who was trying to be Cupid and get them together. It was funny to see the set-up she made to get these two people to meet. When Kristen, the FMC, is talking to what she think is two different men, when they finally meet up it's a surprise to find out there's only one man. Not a lot happened but that was to be expected. Still, it was cute and I enjoyed listening to it!

Almost 2 Thank god this was a freebie stars!!

What's it about? Kristen is a young woman, who likes math (Gasp!) and she's tired of her grandmother's attempts to set her up. To break away from traditional dating, she ventures into the world of online dating and starts to chat with someone who seems to check all her boxes. At the same time, she also starts chatting with a man she initially suspects is interested in her grandmother and wants to make sure that this potential suitor deserves her beloved granny.

As the story unfolds, the two men she's chatting with appear remarkably similar, and she begins to thinks she's falling for BOTH of them!

Best bits: It only lasts two and a half hours.
Oh, and there are a few good cultural references, some science trivia and something about online poker that seemed okay.

Worst bit: Kristen's portrayal as a smart, professional, and introverted character with broad interests falls flat, as she doesn't come across that way in her actions AT ALL!

The initial confusion about her interaction with, and possible attraction to, someone much older than her, (in fact someone she believes is interested in her grandmother!) was a bit off-putting.

Additionally, her inability to connect the dots about the identity of these two men before she does made me question her intelligence altogether.

There's also a moment when she ridiculously overreacts to the guy admiting he lied about his online name (pretty early on in their interactions -maybe the second or third time they'dchatted online). The mere sentence that he lied about his name makes her jump to ridiculously paranoid conclusions, convinced she is in immediate danger from a serial killer.

Overall, Kristen's behavior came off as irrational and erratic, and her dialogue was frequently unnatural, making her character a difficult one to relate to.

Recommended for:
Someone with a couple of hours to spare on a sub-par rom-com (minus the com) who likes anonymous, online dating storylines.

This was the perfect romance audiobook to listen on my drive home after work. Made me smile and I absolutely enjoy Andi and Zachary’s performance. They both are on my list of amazing book narrators.

This short, sweet, sexy and fun story revolves around Cameron who we already met in Birthday Suit. He is Lulu’s best friend. Now is his time to find love. Kristen is his mystery girl who he meets thanks to a nosy, sassy grandma that had it in her that her granddaughter will be his perfect match.

I love that even Blakely secondary characters are fantastic and hilarious. It’s never a dull moment with all of them.

I wish this was a full novel. I have to understand that it’s a novella so it’s supposed to be short but still you can’t blame me for wanting more of all this characters.

This was a short, sweet, and funny story. I guess it kind of goes with some other books by this author, and I'll have to listen to them as well. But I loved our characters in this one, Kristen and Cameron. I kind of agreed with Kristen's thoughts on dating in real life. However I don't see that online dating is much better. At least I haven't had any guys actually spend much time talking online, so haven't had a good experience with that. And then there's Cameron. He's hilarious! Not to mention Kristen's grandma, Jeannie, LOVED her! The pranks in this story were so good. It's almost like one prank after another. And one of them I didn't quite get until we were in the middle of a date and Kristen was starting to figure it out. Although I was with Cameron, figured it out a little quicker. Had an HEA, and maybe I would have liked a little more sexy times instead of the fade to black we kind of got, but it was a good one anyway. And I know I have more to read with the related stories.
