"I've done far worse than what I went to prison for. She has no idea how bad this can get."

WINTER

Sending him to prison was the worst thing I could've done. It didn't matter that he did the crime or that I wished he was dead. Perhaps I thought I'd have time to disappear before he got out or he'd cool off in jail and be anything but the horror he was.

But I was wrong. Three years came and went too fast, and now he's anything but calm. Prison only gave him time to plan.

And while I anticipated his vengeance, I didn't expect this.

He doesn't want to make me hurt. He wants to make everything hurt.

DAMON

First thing's first. Get rid of her daddy. He told them I forced her. He told them his little girl was a victim, but I was a kid, too, and she wanted it just as much as I did.

Step two... Give her, her sister, and her mother nowhere to run and no fuel to escape. The Ashby women are alone now and desperate for a knight in shining armor.

But that's not what's coming.

No, it's time I listened to my father and took control of my future. It's time I showed them all--my family, her family, my friends--that I will never change and that I have no other ambition than to be the nightmare of their lives.

Starting with her.

She'll be so scared, she won't even be safe in her own head by the time I'm done with her. And the best part is I won't have to break into her home to do it.

As the new man of the house I have all the keys.

*Kill Switch is a romantic suspense suitable for readers 18+. It is advised to read Corrupt (Devil's Night #1) and Hideaway (Devil's Night #2) prior to reading this book. Both are available on Kindle Unlimited.

if i could inject this book into my fucking veins, i would. anyone tried suffering a tornado? im thinking that’s gonna be my vibe after reading this book. 🧕🏼 🔫

before we get into it. id like to explain that i read for vibes only. i’m not a literary analyst. i’m reviewing this book simply on how happy it got me. and i got very very happy…

the way this book was giving the romance and the plot (at least in the last 20%) ?!?!!!! i was pulling my hair out. i felt like this book was eating my ass through the fucking pages. that whole hostage and high speed car chase scene towards the end was giving very much fast and furious all 9 or 10 movies. (idk how many there are) for a book series about bitches who peeked in fucking HIGH SCHOOL😂😂😂 i was enthralled to say the least. if there’s anything i love in dark romance, it’s fucking chaos and unhinged behavior. it makes me feel normal 😎

now, since the very fucking beginning, all of Damon’s red flags looked very much green to me. you can’t expect me to ever hate a dark haired, dark eyed sociopath? fuck no. anytime Damon did the slightest fucking thing, i’d let a moan out. i was crying for this man. i knew he went through some shit but goddamn i couldn’t stop weeping for him. my chest actually hurt.

the way he’s dangerously obsessed with winter shouldn’t be something i’d pine for but here we fucking are. he’s so sweet. i was a dog barking in fucking heat for damon torrance. i was gripping those bed sheets besties. my back was arching like i was possessed by the devil himself. i had to take a long cold shower yall… and can we talk about how funny he is? like i was legit laughing out loud in his povs 😮‍💨

winter, number 1, badass. if there’s anything i’m gonna hyper fixate on, it’s a good girl taming the bad boy. were there moments that had me screaming “step tf up” to her? yes absolutely. but if a man could make me FEEL color. consider me submissive and very much breedable 🧎🏻‍♀️🧎🏻‍♀️🧎🏻‍♀️

not only did i enjoy winter and damon but my ice towards michael and ricka kinda thawed. before reading this book i was campaigning my anti-Michael & Ricka hate club but after those bad bitch moments ricka had, i decided to pull the funds.

overall i really enjoyed this book even though it was very corny and questionable at times. idgaf and i will not apologize. i’m literally obsessed to an unhealthy level and i will be going to extra therapy appointments this week 🥳🥳slayyyyyyy

anybody else attracted to villains because

description

and im not talking about those bad boy wannabes who smokes cigarettes or has tattoos and sleeps around, but actual villains who are- how do i say this lightly.. ✨fucked up✨

TW (spoilers): sexual abuse from H's mother when he was 11-15 (there are 2 flashback scenes of this), suicidal thoughts, self-harm.

Damon Torrance (H)
"I need her to hurt me, because pain covers up pain, and if I feel one, I won’t feel the other."

the reason why i like Damon out of all of them is because he's not just a rich and entitled dude who's doing all these things because he's bored *cough* Michael and Kai *cough* but he's doing it to forget his pain and the abuse he faces.

he might be the most fucked up out of all of em but so far, he's the first hero in this series i sympathized with 100%. Michael? hell no. Kai? ehh maybe 80%. but Damon? YES. he's also the most interesting and has the most depth and how he grew up, he could've literally been a serial killer. i really wanna psychoanalyze him but im lazy so sorryyy.

Winter Ashby (h)
"How I’d never hated anyone as much as I hated him, but how I loved what I felt with him more than I loved anything I felt with anyone else, either."

first of all, love the representation of a blind character. thank you for that. second, well.. i just liked her. after reading Hideaway though, i don't know who my favorite is. Winter or Banks? hmm.. i don't know but we'll see after i read Nightfall. but anyways, uhh. i don't really know what to say about her because i was focused on Damon the whole time oops. but just know, she's not as annoying as Rika. that's all there is.

OW/OM drama (spoilers)
aight. we all know Damon had crazy kinks but apparently he wasn't that much of a ho?? i think? apparently he was more of a voyeur? i don't know. im wishful thinking right now. but there is 1 flashback scene of Damon eating out his teacher, 1 scene of Damon giving Will a handjob, 1 scene of Winter dry humping this random actor in the haunted house, and the stupid threesome.

speaking of the threesome that happened in the 83% mark, let's talk about that shall we? first of all, it was stupid. second, well, it was stupid x10000. and third, instead of feeling anger and annoyance (like in Corrupt) i felt more disappointed. it was like watching the character arc of Daenerys Targaryen in s8 and watching the last episode all over again. why? because it was OUT OF CHARACTER.

everything was going so good and yet another scene like this is added and- for what? for smut? it really doesn't make sense for Damon to share Winter. he was even known for fighting to the death to keep what's "his", like, he kidnapped and allied himself with Trevor in the first book because he wanted to keep his friends and remove Rika.. and now you're telling me he's going to share all of a sudden?? right... and honestly, Damon said "i love you" for the first time after this and i just didn't even swoon and celebrate this moment. why? because of the stupid, unnecessary threesome. i was honestly just like this

it was stupid and it just ruined my mood. also, the fact that i read this days before Nightfall with this scene still fresh in my mind, well, i won't stop picturing Will going till 2nd base with Winter soo.

also, why do they always use sex to heal? isn't that- not healthy? well.. wtf do i know.

Rika Fane (rant alert)
first of all, the fuck, when did Damon start liking her? i-

description

i really feel like this "change" with her character is kind of out of left field.. like, suddenly she's good with mind games and politics and throwing knives at people with 100% accuracy?? listen, im actually glad her character changed because books 1 and 2 Rika was.. not it. but suddenly now she's Mayor material? the character we know who's mostly act first, think later kind of girl? plus - i think im a little bias here but oh well - Banks is more suitable to be Mayor. she's really selfless and she even risked her own life to save 9 dogs and her cook knowing she could get killed AND, she's studying sociology and politics. but again, wtf do i know. rich people in these books are apparently a different breed and it's like real-life Game of Thrones so, good for Rika i guess??

Alex and Will
also, quick question, why did people want Alex and Will to be together? im actually genuinely curious. i heard there was drama about this on the facebook group but like- these two barely even had any scene together that could be counted as romantic?? in Hideaway, Alex just tells us how he "fucks" and in other scenes, they hang out with the main character but they barely even interact with each other too. and i think Alex deserves someone who's not hung up with someone else soooo.

______________________________

anyways, i know i said i suddenly "forgot" what Damon did in the first 2 books but ehh i don't think i should forget because what he did was shitty. im glad he took accountability tho but i think he should've grovelled more because i mean.. he did try to kill them 😅. but you know what i did forget? my homework. my social life. why? because Nightfall.

SOAPBOX... I am seriously at a loss for words right now. I pride myself on always being honest in my reviews regardless of whether it is an ARC or a book I pay for. It is awfully hard to write an honest review if you can't tell people what things didn't work for you. I included two "small" spoilers in my review for this book. I say small because the first one the reader finds out at the very beginning of the book. <--- what makes this even MORE ridiculous. I JUST found out that you can download a FREE sample of this book that gives away one of the "spoilers" I posted. The mind boggles at the ridiculousness...sigh. The second I left purposely vague. Both I put in "spoiler" tags so anyone who didn't want to be spoiled wouldn't see the info, and anyone who prefers to know spoilers before purchasing could make an informed decision. Especially if they know ME and we share the same likes and dislikes in our books.

Imagine my surprise when I got tracked down on FB messenger, received a message here on Goodreads, AND got an email all within the same ten minute period telling me to remove my spoilers ASAP. Authors/PR companies should not be trying to manipulate reviews. ARCs stop being "in exchange for honest reviews" when a reviewer's hands are tied by stipulations. This type of thing needs to stop NOW.

So that is my say on the matter. I will no longer read or promote this author or work with the PR company she is using for promotion. If anyone would like to know what the spoilers were, feel free to message me. The funniest part about all this was I wasn't sure how I was going to rate this book. That is why I was taking 24 hours to think about it. As you can see, after this fiasco I have now 1-Starred it...sigh.

description
I am going to hold off a bit on placing a star rating on this book. I've got a bunch of mixed feelings about it. I liked book one, and Damon was always an intriguing character to me, but his character (and 70% of this book) didn't work for me for. Like...AT ALL. I wasn't expecting sunshine and rainbows by any means, but I pretty much felt ZERO connection between Winter and Damon until the last 30%. Coincidently, the last 30% of this book was the best part of it by far. If the first 70% had been as good, I would have given the book 4-Stars.

description

Alas, I felt like there was way too much filler with all the past chapters, and they bored me. I did love the twists that came at the end (again last 30% of this was awesome). I loved seeing the characters from the prior books as well.

So yea...I need to marinate a bit before I decide on a rating.

only penelope douglas could make me go from absolutely loathing a character to absolutely loving him in the span of 3 books.

this book is definitely not for the faint of heart. damon and winter both have tough pasts but there was so much beauty in their relationship. i think for me this book did a fantastic job at splicing in flashbacks with the present day to get me to care so much for these characters.

and i think the reason for their enemies to lovers relationship made the most sense out of all of the characters in this series. 10/10 would recommend to anyone who loves dark romances.

Kill Switch is my favorite book of 2019! Damon Torrance is a character that I went from absolutely loathing to loving with all my heart over the course of three books. The author deserves some kind of award for the way she changed my mind about his character and the depth of which she made me feel for him.

I'm telling you guys! Penelope Douglas knocked it out of the park with this one! It was everything! I have no words to fully express how much I adore this book, these characters, and this series. I will be so sad to see it all end after Will's book. This series has become one of my favorites of all time and made Penelope Douglas one of my favorite authors. The story is intricately woven, unique, gripping, angsty, steamy, dark, and just all around amazing! The characters are complex, and the relationships between all of them are interesting, intense, and at times, super fucked up. I'm not just talking about the romances either. The friendships and family relationships are some of my favorite aspects of these books.

I read over 100 romance novels every year and love plenty of them, but I rarely add a book boyfriend to my fictional harem. Not only did I add Damon this year, but I shoved his ass way to the top with my man, Vicious. If you know me, you know just how significant that is. I can't get enough of his character, so fingers crossed, we get to see a lot more of him in the 4th book of the Devil's Night series.

In short, Kill Switch is a fucking masterpiece. It's the book that I enjoyed the most in 2019, and Damon has a permanent spot in my harem and my heart. If you like dark new adult romance, do not miss this series! It's an absolute must read!

➳The dark side of Penelope Douglas has arising in this shocking "romance" of a novel, that will have you questioning your sanity...

➳Let me start this off by saying, I am a true fan of Penelope's writing and the beauty and magic she has with them by moving the mind of the reader to a whole new world. And that's why I always read her novels, I never back down from signing up for her novels or anything that she promotes. She has earned that respect from me and the admiration is there as well. I knew that if I got involved with this series, something dark would come out of it. The first novel, Corrupt was action packed, emotionally draining when it came down to the dark side of each character, and also sexy and steamy in the best of ways (steamy... **wink wink** y'all know what I am talking about). And the love I had for her first novel in the Devil's Night series was just the beginning of me getting emotionally involved with the horsemen. And then Khai's story was created in Hideaway, and I knew that my baby Khai was going to need all my hugs and kisses. The drama in both books is nothing in comparison to what we got in this novel, Damon's story. And I want to warn my followers, that if you are NOT into dark romances with menage a trois, or voyeurism then you need to skip this novel for sure. As some of you know, I am not big into sharing. I love possessive alpha males, and Damon was indeed very possessive of Winter... but he was also very possessive over other people that I was not expecting to make a twist and turn of. I won't mention who it may be so if you want to know then keep reading because I will have a spoiler section following this review.

➳Let's talk about the story! And just because Penelope is my number one favorite author does not mean I will back down from speaking the truth. It hurts me to write this aggressive review about an author whose words have changed my mindset in many ways, but it is indeed something that I cannot be backed down from writing about. For those who have read about Damon in the first and second novel, you know that he is the most emotionally dark individual out of all four horsemen. He had a childhood past that we learned about in the second novel, that has you wanting more of him and comfort him. And then of course we also know about the malicious side that is his father, Gabriel. After knowing about Damon's past, I was still intrigued to keep reading his novel. That's when we meet Winter. The strong individual who has made Damon's mindset change with a semi-positive attitude. His side of protectiveness towards her, is also one in which he wants to hurt her. Not for revenge, but for the sake of just wanting the dark to arise and engulf them both;
"The shit the came out of my mouth. All for Winter's sake, because she was my sole motivation in everything I did, and I was kind of fucking ashamed she had that power..."

➳There are a lot of twist and turns in this novel that sometimes, I felt like just stopping and DNF-ing the novel. But out of respect for Penelope, I continued reading. The drama that revolves Winter and Damon is one that I felt kept dragging (for my tastes), and yes. This is the longest book that Penelope has ever written and I am so proud of her for accomplishing such a task that not many can do. There were somethings that to me I felt were not necessary but maybe did make an importance to the story plot in general. There is no denying that if you skip a single page of this novel, you will be completely lost. There is mystery in every page, an angst and darkness of every turn that you cannot miss out on reading. And when finally Damon and Winter ever do make an appearance together and demonstrate their passion towards each other, the page burns because of said passion;
"I don't know if I felt responsible for the fact that she now only had four senses by which to experience the world, but it was a strange feeling to want to protect someone from others when I knew I'd be worse for her health than anyone..."

➳From the first book, you could always tell that every important character in this novel was connected in some way. Maybe in a genetic way, or an emotional type of way. But the connection was always there. Reading Damon's story, you soon realize that some people are legitimately connected genetically, and the shocking part of it all is what really makes the story worth to be read. Not many can be compelled to read such a malicious and dark novel, but others do have that tempting side to it that makes them want to read more. In my case, I like to read dark romances. This one in particular, was just not my cup of tea.

➳I think I have said enough about the quality of this novel. As previously mentioned, I am proud of Penelope for having all these dark yet beautiful words in mind and creating an indeed unique novel that had my skin crawling. Do not enter by reading this novel with a mindset of finding a cliche happily ever after. The prologue had to for sure be my only and favorite part of this novel because it was only Damon and Winter. That is the way that it should always be, and I am glad that Penelope was able to acquire such a beautiful yet simple ending. Now, the question remains: What is going on with Will? Honestly... Will is such a mess! Emotionally and physically. He was left off at the end of this book viewed as him having the time of his life. But I feel like there is more to him that we have not been able to identify. I will be hesitant to read his novel that's for sure, but I am determined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

“I wish we never had to leave the fountain. We never did.”

You know a book is a masterpiece when it made you fall in love with the character you hated for most of the series. I can't express in words how much I love this book and Damon and Winter. To be honest, I was so ready to hate him in his book but I only had the sliver of hope that maybe just maybe he's not the guy he really appeared to be and he literally proved me wrong. The best redemption arc because I'm the same girl who hated him with passion when I started reading this series and now I'm a Damon Torrance defender for all my life.

This book was a perfection and so messed up and I know I need therapy for loving this book and Damon but at this point I don't care. This is definitely my favourite book in this series and I couldn't help but feel the aderanaline rush while reading some scenes. It was so addictive that I wanted to inhale the words from the pages. Because how the hell I'm just sitting and reading a scene where Damon took Winter for a motorbike ride because he wanted her to see Black and the next minute I wanted to ride that bike with Damon. There wasn't one moment, one chapter, one sentence that I wasn't sucked into.

“You…” He trailed off, searching for words. “It was pure, and it was a dream. I didn’t want to change you. I just wanted to be a part of it all. Of everything beautiful you were going to do.”

This was the most emotional, beautiful and the heartbreaking book in this series. The horrible things both Winter and Damon went through broke my heart. The chemistry between them was everything and I felt an instant connection to them. The closet scene, the bike riding scene, when he took her for a drive in his car, everytime he whispered words and secrets in her ear, the fountain scene, the maze scene, hospital scene, the fountain dance scene when he was wishing while looking at her face 💘💓💕💘💖💘💗 (I cried reading that scene), everytime he watched her and she didn't knew he watched her, every scene in which Winter danced for Damon not knowing where he was and what he might do to her, the anticipation and excitement of not knowing what's going to happen to Winter had me hooked up. Damon and Will's friendship is also one of the major highlights of this book and I DID NOT expected them have um....more than just a friendship kind of friendship?? Not that I'm complaining because DamonWill duo is so much better than MichaelKai duo.

I have a hate-love relationship with this series but I always end up devouring each book because apparently this author puts straight up cocaine in this series. This was also in a dual timeline and I absolutely enjoyed both the timelines because Damon and Winter slayed. I am addicted to this series even though I hate most of the characters. This is a hit or a miss kind of series and I get why but I absolutely enjoyed the vibes, the addictive plotline, drama, romance, spicy smut because PD really writes the best spicy scenes 🤌🏻❤️‍🔥, her eerie and impressive writing and I like how it gets better with each book, characters even though they are really messed up in the head, and just everything.

“My woman doesn’t ask permission. She’s a force. Say it louder.”
Her chin started to tremble, but her voice burst out strong. “My place is at your side.” And I kissed her, making sure she fucking believed it. She was always wanted.

Live laugh love fuck Damon Torrance

➸ Winter Ashby

I always had a problem with the fmc written by Penelope but Winter took hold of my heart from the very first moment. Winter always was her own person and made no excuses to do what she needed to do and to get what she wanted. Winter wanted to be treated like a normal girl and I loved that no matter what and what life throws at her she always stands up for herself. She was no nonsense person and never craved any attention from anyone except her ghost boy Damon. I hated the way everyone treated her, belittle her like she was a little fragile girl who lost her eyesight because of her own stupidity. But she's so much more than that and only Damon made her feel all the emotions she thought she would never feel. She wanted to follow her dreams if being a ballerina and he let her do that without telling her that she can't have that or that she shouldn't. The way she understood Damon and gave him the love and care he needed but also brought him to his knees whenever he did something wrong 🤭 Everyone thought Winter is just a sweet docile little girl and I loved to see the way Damon brought out the wild and adventurous side of her.

“Being with him was like dancing. Dancing with death.”

➸ Damon Torrance

I want to give this man the biggest and the longest hug in the world. I know he'll probably kill me for it but who cares. His story broke my heart and I don't how but he shouldn't be living in a world where eleven year olds thinks of how to end their lives. Why I think Damon is the best man in this series? Because he never made any excuses for his actions and didn't blamed his life situations for it. He had a rough childhood and adulthood and never had any normal parental love and care but that never stopped this man from creating his own family. He knew he was toxic and psychotic and he owned every shit about himself and even worked on those issues on his own. He also had this soft, caring and possessive side underneath his wild and dangerous demeanour. Which surprised me because one minute he was tormenting Winter with his dangerous whispering voice and the next moment he was holding her in his arms in a closet and keeping her ears closed to keep her safe. It took him so long to come out of his nightmares and talk about them with someone and I was a mess of tears and sobbing the moment he confessed all his nightmares and secrets to Winter 😭❤️‍🩹

“Every moment with her, I was real. I would’ve been faithful, and I would’ve died protecting her.”

╰┈➤ Winter and Damon

They were always meant for each other even if they destroyed each other in the process of loving each other. Winter is who she is because of Damon and she hates him for it but she always knew that there is a part of her that would never forget that eleven year old boy in the fountain. He was so alone for all his life until Winter came and found him in the fountain. When Damon met her again as her ghost boy, took her on adventures, gave her all the time and care she needed, didn't coddle her like a kid who can't see or do anything, she fell for him again. He got a tattoo for her name origin "Winter" 🥺, wrote her a note with a braille typewriter, built her a fountain which he designed himself and kept the hair barratte she gave him when they were kids hidden somewhere because it was so precious to him. He is the same man who wanted to get revenge on her. And I get it why she must've felt violated and used after knowing his true identity but oh god that scene hurts so good. The way he was begging her to not let him go and I wish Winter gave him a chance to explain himself 😭

“You dance?” she said in my ear.
“No.”
“You are right now,” she pointed out. And I stopped, realizing we’d been turning in a slow circle.

When he doesn't like dancing but for her would do everything 🤌🏻💘😭

I loved that they both were their true selves with each other. He didn't ignored her or acted nervous around her and she always taunted him with her actions and words and called him out on his shit. He treated her like the woman she was, respected her choices and decisions. They are perfect for each other. Also there was an emotional aspect to their realtionship more than just the physical and mental attraction which I loved a lot because the previous couples lacked that in their relationship.

“I hate my house. It’s so dark there.” He paused, then continued. “It all fucking disappeared when you were dancing, though. It made the world prettier. I liked it.”

I was happy for them because somehow they both always found their way back to each other. When they kids, when they were teenagers, when they adults. It didn't matter if it was for some revenge, obsession or curiosity, Damon and Winter were made for each other. Their lives were entwined by their twisted fate from the very first moment they met.

“She and I… we’re alone in the universe. No one was us.”

The ending was perfect. The best if I must say because the drama and the action in the ending chapters was chef's kiss. I never saw that plot twist coming because how in the hell Damon is blood related to people in his own friends group. Glad his father is dead instead of making new siblings for Damon. I'm not lying when I say I absolutely devoured the last five chapters and I'm not even mad about reading another threesome in this series because chapter 30 was just so hot. Possessive Damon is just something else. I need another book about Winterdamon because these 600+ pages weren't enough.

“How much does this fun cost?” “Sticking with me for the rest of your life,” I replied, putting my arm around her waist. “That’ll suck.”

I know i need therapy for loving this book and DAMON FUCKING TORRANCE but who cares because red was always my favourite colour 🫢

Listen, I enjoy dark romance as much as the next girl, but this one was just beyond problematic y’all (+0.5 star bc I liked the writing). I didn’t read the trigger warnings before diving in (can only blame my own stupidity here)... and got hella triggered by some of the scenes.

description
My mental health went rapidly deteriorating after reading this shi ✨✨✨

I didn’t care about any of the characters at all, the only character I like here is Mikhail... Winter’s dog.

But let’s talk about our boy Damon, he’s the reason I’m giving this book one star after all...
I hate Damon w a passion bro come fight me, everything is wrong with him, if you want to make a problematic hero at least give me a real psychopath, a criminal or something

Yes he has a dark past and yada yada, but how can I put this nicely...? I simply don’t care. Just bc you’ve been traumatized doesn’t mean you get to traumatized others love 😍🥰

~Spoilers Ahead~
Everything he did just irritate the hell out of me. So he didn’t technically rape Winter rightt, but Damon did force himself on Rika (not all the way, but still) and it turns out she’s Damon’s half sister 🥴 talk about disgusting.
And what’s the deal with him and Banks? these siblings were a lil too close for comfort ngl, did they ever have any sexual encounter in the previous books? I wouldn’t be surprised if they did though, seeing how fucked up this book was.
And this one scene where he come inside the h without her consent is just 🤢

“You came inside me,” I told him.
He blew out smoke, not saying anything for a moment.
“And?” he finally answered, Damon’s voice strong and sure.”
“My stomach sank, anger and shame burning my face. Oh, God, if I got pregnant…”

All in all, I fucking hate him..
I’d rather date Ted Bundy than go anywhere near Damon 👋🏼

Don’t come at me guys 😗✌️and please take my opinion with a grain of salt since I didn’t even read the first two books. Thank you.

I gave first two books five stars but now I see it’s not fair for this book, because it’s so so sooooo much better than them.
Dear darkest lord Damon...He is the one and only character I completely adore on these series. He is damaged soul. He is devil and he is not in disguise.
The other gang members always made me irritated. Michael is cold hearted, narcissistic character, Kai is spineless and Will , does he even have a character?
I was never a fan of Rika, too.
But Banks was always my hero( not heroine, hero, because instead of Damon, other male characters have nothing similar with a real hero!)
And now Winter became my second favorite heroine. She looks like fragile, naive but wait for it till you see her claws.
And first time at the series, I saw real connection, emotional bondage between a couple. I loved Damon and Winter’s story, starting from their childhood, surviving after too many losses, jail-times, worse parents’ interventions.
I think after this book, the series reached at its peak point,so I’m not sure I want to read Will’s story. Maybe I’ll read it just to know more about Damon,Banks’ stories.
I really enjoyed this book! Damon is always gonna be one of favorite literary characters.

FINALLY DAMON’S STORY! MY ULTIMATE ANTI HERO!

LIVE! | AMZ US | AMZ UK |
Blurb:

Books in Devil’s Night series should be read in order:
Book 1: Corrupt - Michael Crist
Book 2: Hideaway - Kai Mori
Book 3: Kill Switch - Damon Torrance
Book 4: Nightfall - Will Grayson III

"He made himself the cure, which wouldn't have been necessary if he hadn't also created the disease."

Hi, I'm Alana, and I am hopelessly in love with Damon Torrance.
10/10 would let him ruin my life.

You know the feeling you get when one of your most anticipated reads of the year is even BETTER than you imagined, and now that you've finished the book you're just in this withdrawal period where you are trying to figure out what the hell you just read while simultaneously wishing you could reread it for the first time? Yep, that's where I'm at right now. Send help.

This book was just...oof... A LOT. If you thought Corrupt or Hideaway were messed up, oh sweet child, you haven't seen anything yet. Seriously. Damon, started out as my least favorite character in book one, I absolutely loathed him, but now? Knowing his back story I would absolutely lay my life down for him. That totally counts as enemies to lovers, right? Anyway, *slams fists on table* let's talk about this mindfuck of a book. The first thing you need to understand about this series if you are new, is that these characters are seriously flawed, and they show their love in rather interesting ways to say the least. This is a dark romance series, so it's not meant to be pretty in the beginning and the middle and honestly the end too. You won't find rainbows and butterflies in this, you'll find yourself questioning your morals, dark secrets, game changing plot twists, and a whole lot of pain...but honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. I personally love my favorite books to be served with a side of pain and suffering.

I have been eagerly awaiting Damon's story because Hideaway (book #2) basically felt like one giant set up for this book, so I knew this was going to be good. Honestly, I'm just gonna put this out there... Damon deserves his own series. That's how complex of a character he is. His back story absolutely wrecked my soul and I am so heart broken for him. Damon is fresh out of jail and ready to get revenge on the girl who put him there, Winter. Winter, is now stuck in her sworn enemies web that he so brilliantly created and knows she's about to play the biggest game of her life. The tension is literally so high y'all. This is Penelope Douglas' best enemies to lovers book so far. Plus, can I also just add that I absolutely LOVED that Damon never let Winter's disability slow her down or treat her like she was fragile and incapable of certain things like her family did to her.

One of the best things you can do for yourself upon starting this book is know nothing about the plot. You just need to experience this disturbing yet seriously hot mindfuck of a book. I don't want to spoil anything for anyone and since this book has so many plot twists my lips will stay sealed except for this... I am so IMPRESSED. Like, actually blown away by this book. I can't even remember the last time I gave a romance book 5 stars, but this honestly deserves more than that. It's so complex and the flashbacks added so much more depth to this story and just UGH PLEASE READ THIS BOOK. That's it, just read it and suffer with me.

Favorite Quotes

“Having Damon around was the only time I ever felt solid in my life,” he told me. “He’s powerful. But painful.”

“How I’d never hated anyone as much as I hated him, but how I loved what I felt with him more than I loved anything I felt with anyone else, either.”

"But for me, everything was harder. I couldn't detach from my brain, and I wasn't happy unless it was a mindfuck."

"Fear made us feel alive."

"I'd changed her forever. I'd bent and twisted and broken everything that made her the most beautiful thing that ever happened to me."

All in all, if you are looking for one SERIOUSLY messed up love story, with enemies to lovers like you have never seen before then don't pass up this series and more importantly this BOOK. Because hands down, this is the best one out of the series and I haven't even read Will's story yet, but I don't care nothing will top this. You heard it here first, friends.

P.S.- this is on Kindle Unlimited if you subscribe to it!
P.P.S. - we need more clarification on a certain M/M romance and who the fifth horsemen is, please and thank you.

A HUGE thank you to Penelope Douglas and Social Butterly PR for including me in the blog tour and providing me with an e-ARC of one of my most anticipated reads of 2019!

I savoured this one because I didn't want it to end. I've always admired Penelope Douglas' ability to make me root for an anti-hero, but I'm blown away by Damon. He's the ultimate anti-hero but somehow I found myself rooting for him after everything he's gone through. I never forgot his previous crimes, and I don't think Penelope Douglas expects the reader to. I imagine we're supposed to hope for his own version of an HEA in spite of them, and I certainly did. This is dark romance at its absolute best! Why isn't there a six star option on here? Devil's Night is one of my favourite series ever and Kill Switch just made it to the top of my favorite reads of 2019. It'll take something amazing this year to knock it off the top spot.

Reread rating: 4.5 ⭐️
Original rating: 4 ⭐️

I’m not surprised that I enjoyed this more the second time and I think that’s bcs I knew what to expect and I also read all the ‘past’ chapters first then resumed with the ‘present’ chapters—it prevented me from getting bored/drained with the suspenseful writing. So that’s a tip from mua .

Damon was my first ever dark hero I fell in love with. I really appreciated that PD made sure damon’s character was fully aware of how messed up he was and that he felt the guilt haunting him for what he did.
For me, as long as the hero acknowledges that he’s a skank sometimes, i’m all in.

It was so satisfying to finally understand Damon’s complex mind and twisted character and to learn that they were resulted from his childhood trauma. I can see now why he’s so obsessed with wanting to possess something pure, loyal and sweet in his life all for himself; to balance out the glaring darkness that was slowly eating him inside.
Winter was a solid heroine albeit some of her actions were quite questionable in here.

Overall, this was a fulfilling reread for me and I devoured it(again)-yum. I just pitty the newbies for having to endure Corrupt first to get here😂

at the moment;-
[ DAMON (king) > KAI (still my wise bby) > MICHAEL (ew fuck him) ]

**************

⛔️OK SPOILERS AHEAD WOOT (100% RANT)⛔️

❄️ Winter-kinda-whack-Ashbey(ily but yea..said what I said)❄️:

- Ok let’s just jump straight to how weird it was that Winter didn’t even suspect her mystery guy to be Damon?? Idk, man literally n0bodY dared or cared to make a move on you in school except Damon. so who else would have had the balls to come at u and scare you like that in your own house?

- The fact the she still didn’t consider it could be Damon even when her mystery guy disappeared the same time after Damon promised to not bother her anymore and left for college. Yea no, I didn’t buy any of that bs. Trust me, I’M SUPER DUMB but even I can put two and two together ok.

- Next, HOW TF was she able to just get onto Damon’s lap in 0.005 seconds and started grinding on him in the backseat car after 2 years of not seeing each other?? I mean, yea ok damon showed her the shining, shimmering, splendid world but still ?¿??— she didn’t even know who tf he was. they literally hung out for like THREE times back when they were sneaking around.
fine ok I get it, he’s the only one that gets u so you longed for and missed him those past 2 years but damnn, I swear I didn’t think ur shy ass would get all cowgirl on him so quick

- Isn’t it also weird that she wasn’t able to detect the taste of cigarette when they kissed? Damon didn’t even chew gum before kissing bro, he only showered to remove the scent that’s all.

🤡 Ri-bland-ka🤡:
Gotta be honest I’m glad to know that we can practically form a club just to diss Rika’s character bcs I honestly thought I was alone in this lol.

- ANYWAY, why did PD think it would be a great idea to make Rika run for Mayor? First, she’s like in her early 20s—didn’t make sense AT ALL. Second, it's not like she’s THAT wise or mature so why even bother. Idc if it’s just fiction, the least you could do as a writer is to make the plot and characters believable (says someone who’s never published a book)

- Also, what is it that’s got her thinking she knows better than everyone, huh? Like seriously, I was living for the moments when damon couldn’t stand her ass;-

‘“Stay back,” she ordered. “Just follow.”
“I know!” I fired back. Did she think I was fucking stupid?’

I-

🥺 Damon-You're-my-honeybunch-sugar-plum-Pumpy-umpy-umpkin-You're-my-sweetie-pie-Torrance🤤:

- I love you damon but your apology was NOT ENOUGH. Fine, you have an ego as big and high as the Everest so I get that you refused to grovel and beg for forgiveness from Michael and Kai BUT not when it comes to Will, man… He deserved more than just ‘Im sorry.’ You both were a unit and you could’ve seriously killed him okayyy🥺. not cool.

- I deadass wanted to see him at least shed a tear and hug Will to fix what he broke. Idc if it’s out of his character just do it in private or whatever, NOT GO AND HAVE A FREAKING THREESOME—now THAT was out of character for Damon but did it still happen?.....Of-fucking-course.
He couldn’t stand to to look at Will whispering in Winter’s ear but he sure can stand watching him kiss and suck her tits huh

whatever, still love u i guessss

Re-read #2 (10/31/2022) 4.5 stars

It must be exhausting always rooting for the anti-hero.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
4.5 stars
That was such a messed up scary book that made me question my sanity. It’s not like I expected anything less from Penelope Douglas, her books are so addictive and always mess up with my mind. Damon’s story was really exceptional, it might be my favorite in this series so far. It gave me a huge adrenaline rush.
"He made himself the cure, which wouldn't have been necessary if he hadn't also created the disease."
Damon is the most emotionally dark person in the whole series. He is the devil himself. He has the most damaged soul ever. He has been the villain in the first two books, so this is his redemption story, or not? Damon was such a confusing character and even after finishing the book, I still don’t know how I feel about him. Being inside Damon’s head was such a scary thing, and it really did mess with my mind. Winter was such an interesting character. She’s so strong, passionate, and fierce. I admired her a lot.
“Don’t let me go,” he whispered in my ear. “Don’t let go.”
“I’m gonna…” My mouth was so dry. “I’m gonna send you to jail.”
His lips rested against my cheek, and I thought I felt his body shake with a silent sob.
But as I fell into sleep and oblivion, his words were sharp and clear in my ear. “Then you better hope I never get out.”
This book was such a scary messed up thrilling ride. I enjoyed every part of it. The alternation between the past and present was so perfect. It gave the book the perfect balance. We watch them slowly falling and chasing the thrill in the past, while hating each other and messing with each other’s mind in the present. It was just so perfect. And thanks to Penelope Douglas’ books, I decided to never ever ever go out from my house on devil’s night. I’ve become traumatized for life. Now I can’t wait to read Will’s book.
Watch out people...."The Horsemen" are back !!
Ever since I've read the first book "Corrupt", I have been intrigued by Damon's character. I wanted to get a good look inside his head and see what the hell was going on. Out of all the Horsemen...he is definitely the most intriguing one, at least to me he is. For me...Michael is the stoic leader, Kai is the voice of reason and Will is fun and flirty one (though those are usually the most dangerous ones) and Damon...he was always the dark and insane one...isn't he ??
Now I will try and write this review without any spoilers, which is a bit of a challenge to be honest 9f01372377900d9203bc4efe48eb1659
Let me start this review by saying that you really have to read the first two books in this series, to understand what the hell is going on. I know Penelope stated that you have to at least read "Corrupt", but I think skipping "Hideaway" would be a big mistake. You would miss too much of the full picture, to really enjoy this one. So please go back and read all the previous books in this series, if you haven't yet fcc37b1805a49c13a3f7d3d50b64ed47
Animated GIF
Like I said, this book is all about Damon Torrance, and I finally got to have a little peek inside his head and let me tell you...he might be screwed up, but he knows exactly what he wants and what he is doing.
Damon Torrance Winter
And what he wants right now is Winter... Three years is a very long time and she needs to pay. He doesn't just want to hurt her though...he wants to take everything from her, including her sanity. Her betrayal was the worst and so she will have to pay the biggest price...
I absolutely loved Damon's story and Damon himself. The reason he is so hell-bent on revenge, is because he got his feelings hurt...feelings I don't think, even he knew he had...
That made me love him even more. What can I say... I love the assholes and the insane ones, they need to be loved the most ;)
So far this is definitely my favorite in the series so far. Probably because it was also a bit darker than the previous ones. That said, beware that this book does contain some triggers. There are also some scenes that not everyone is gonna like, even though I absolutely loved them 7e6c22cc4c29adb0f4a619d0806b71f1
Damon
I myself can't wait for Will's story. He has always been the fun one, the drunk and flirty one. This book, however, showed me a side of him, I didn't know he had, and now I want to read his book asap. I have this feeling that his story is gonna blow all the others away !!
I highly recommend this series !!
Damon was a good villain but he is a lot better as a hero. Both Damon and Winter had shitty parents. This book was filled with angst and it was good to see how Damon earned his place. The plot twist that Rika is actually Damon's half-sister was interesting but also gross as Rika and Banks made out in Hideaway.
I have many problems with this book. First the scene between Will, Winter, and Damon. I mean whats wrong with this author? The first book had a scene between Micheal, Rika, and Kai. it's like a pattern. The first book had a sex scene between three people, the second book didn't and the third book had it. Although Damon and Winter's scene was different, it just didn't make any sense.
The author also has the same pattern in her series. For example, her main female character is always blonde who is always right, enjoys sex (not a slut) and everyone loves her. In this series, it's Rika and in Fall Away series it was Tate. And why would Rika be elected for mayor at the age of 21? Banks is intelligent, why doesn't she run for mayor? Why everything constantly focuses on Rika? Why not Banks or Alex?
And why Winter constantly judged her sister for being easy while she sleeps with Damon without knowing his name in the first place? It was constantly implied her sister was easy but was Winter difficult? Winter is also disgusted when her sister had sex with a boy ( which Damon told them to do because he wanted to watch) and then she sleeps with Damon without knowing his name. She always implies her sister is easy but she isn't, she will fight Damon while she already slept with Damon previously and she didn't put many fights later either. Why this double standard?
Then the scene where a girl was making out with her boyfriend's best friend because Damon will give her money, Rika was also there and wondering why the girl was enjoying it. Meanwhile, Rika had a threesome with her boyfriend and his best friend.
Will and Damon have a strong bond, right? Will should have played a big role instead he just had a few scenes that didn't contribute to the plot at all.
This series is like everything I hate but still, I am captivated to know what happens to the characters.
I had several issues with this book, so let's begin.
Constant slut-shaming
-'He would certainly have his fun. My sister was gorgeous. And I wasn't an ideal choice, either, because I'd fight him. Ari was the easy choice.' - In case you were wondering Winter is talking about her own sister and how Winter would never have s*x with Damon (even though they had a previous sexual relationship) but her sister totally would because she's easy.
-Other examples being the girl from the club who is kissing her boyfriend's best friend while her boyfriend is watching (she's doing it so Damon would give her money), Rika (who also had a threesome with her boyfriend and his best friend is also present and wonders why is that girl enjoying herself, hm, I don't know Rika, why did you enjoy it?)
-The teacher from school, okay, I know this kind of things happen is school, but why make the teacher so gross and dirty and humiliated in the end? The message shouldn't be the teacher is gross and should be humiliated for it, but the teacher is having a sexual relationship with a minor and should be reported and fired.
-Again, Arion - She has a one-night stand with a guy at their house party, Winter is of course disgusted by this, but continues to have sex with a guy she hang out only three times and even almost tells him that she loves him? We need to stop with the double standards, especially in this day and age.
'The perfect blonde who does no wrong syndrome'
Penelope Douglas has this thing in which she writes about the perfect blonde girl, WHO ISN'T A SLUT (that's very important) yet enjoys sex, listens to cool music, everybody loves her and she is always the main character even though the book isn't about her. Tate from Bully, anyone? And in this book series her name is Rika. Let's get one thing straight - Rika and Damon are not friends. He tried to kill her. Yet Rika is the main girl for everything even in this book, even though Banks is Damon's sister. But who cares about Banks when Rika is involved, am I right? Also, why not give some attention to Alex? Oooo right, Alex is an escort which means she's not the 'perfect blonde who does no wrong', so why would anybody care about her?
Listen, I get it. Penelope Douglas writes fun, sexy, little books for entertainment purposes. But making Rika run for mayor at 21 while still in school? I mean how little research did she do for this book, if any? And I mean she lives in America, does she see a lot of 21 year old collage students run for mayor?
It just sends a really bad message to girls-If you're not a tall, blonde, hot girl you don't deserve a story. Or you do, you'll just be the sidekick to the attractive blonde while she runs for mayor and saves the world.
'Will and their whole relationship'
Will is always credited as Damon's best friend. But where do we see it? DO we have a backstory? I mean, this is Damon's book? Right? Where did they meet, how and why did they become so close?
Other issue being their sexual relationship. I mean, clearly they have some attraction towards each other giving the fact they had sex three times? But why ruin that with the fact that Will can only get off with Damon if he is thinking about a girl? Penelope Douglas just potrayed bisexual relationships in a very bad light and I think people should be offended. I mean, two guys have sex, they like or love each other, what's the big deal? Why make it wrong and make it seem like they can only have sex if they're thinking about girls?
Bad character developmen
I mean, where are Winters mom and sister during the whole book? You want to tell me they go out of the country and never return? Where is her dad, does he ever return, does he ever call Winter? Who are Winters friends Jade and Isabella? How long have these girls been her friends? Why are they never mentioned again? Does Winter only stay with Damon and his friends and forget about everybody she was once friends with?
Making the 'nice' guys seem bad so the anti-hero would look awesome even without any character development
Penelope, what did Ethan do to you? I mean, why do you have to make WInters only male friend a pervert? So Damon, the guy who raped her would seem good and would protect her? Lazy writing at its finest.
Statutory rape
Do I even have to explain this one?
I want to make it clear that Damon and Winter are 11 and 8 years old when they first meet. When Winter returns to school after a couple of years, she is 14 and that makes him 17. Right? That doesn's stop him from saying things like:
'I wonder how many guys have have kissed you since. But then, I guess I don't really care, because I was first, and that's all that matters.'
'But he grabed mu hand, pressing it back on the beads and his skin. 'Oh, why stop when you were doing so well?'
Which brings us to the biggest problem I had with this book.
Winter is 16 when she has sex with Damon the first time. Damon is 19. You see what I'm getting at?
Damon is convicted of statutory rape.
Winter even says it herself multiple times in the book - He raped her:
'I know why she'd do this, but you're supposed to protect me,' I told my mom.'He raped me!'
'I won't let you have anything else from me. You raped me. And it wasn't statutory rape. It was rape.'
Also, Damon knows he shouldn't be having sex with a minor
Example number one: 'Dude, girls your own age, right out here! What the fuck?'Damon responds:'I don't think I can wait for her to be legal, man.'
Example number two: 'Was that it then? Did I do to Winter in high school what my father did to my mother? Did i groom her?'
I want to make one thing clear - The year is 2019 and things like this should never be written by a female author, let alone be published and praised as an amazing, kinky love story. I mean, how many naive girls are going to read things like this and think 'ok, this book is published, people love it, so it is okay to be 16 and have sex with a 19 year old man? I mean, Winter and Damon end up together, so it must be okay.' -Girls, it's not okay. Trust me. And also, rape SHOULD NOT AND CANNOT BE ROMANTICIZED. EVER.
A person should not ejaculate in another person if the other person didn't consent to being ejalucated in in the first place
'You came inside me,' I told him. He blew out smoke, not saying anything for a moment. 'And?' he finally answered, Damon's voice strong and sure'
'My father wants his grandchildren, Winter.' My stomach sank, anger and shame burning my face. Oh, God, if I got pregnant...'
Does this sound as a girl who wants to have a baby with a man she just had sex with? A big, fat no. And that's why this book is messed up on so many levels.
Giving a blind person control of your car while in full speed
Does this one even need an explanation? OK, the road was empty. But what if it wasn't?
Penelope Douglas, you should do better, especially since the majority of your audience is female
Kill-Switch
The last book in the series is coming out soon, so I felt like listening to this audio again, because when I first heard it, I didn't appreciate it enough (hey hey, relax - I had my midterm exam's!!!! 😂)
This is the third book in the Devils Night Series - and although every book is about a different character, you have to read them in order... because the previous books felt like a grand introduction for this book! 💣💣💣
📚 “𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝑰’𝒅 𝒏𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒂𝒔 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒂𝒔 𝑰 𝒉𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒊𝒎, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝑰 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒘𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑰 𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒉𝒊𝒎 𝒎𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏 𝑰 𝒍𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑰 𝒇𝒆𝒍𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒆𝒍𝒔𝒆, 𝒆𝒊𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓.” 📚
This is Damon Torrace's story, one of the four horseman and the villain-fucked-up one. 😈
Boy, he was such an anti-hero that I couldn't believe Penelope would be able to redeem him... let alone make me LIKE him!!!
At first I really wanted to kick his ass, but he's a super complex character and as the plot progressed and I realized his fucked up past, DAMN, I fell hopelessly in love! (and the fact that Penelope managed to do that, is another proof for what a great author she is!) ❤👑👏
Damon never had an easy life and now he wants revenge on the girl who accused him of rape and sent him to prison.
He's always hiding, always watching - like a real predator. But he doesn't want his prey to wait for him on a plate... he has to hunt it down, and this is why Winter was the perfect girl for him!!! 💥💣
Winter Ashby lost her vision when she was 8. Since then, everyone has treated her with silk gloves, except for one person. She's strong, smart, brave and the best match for Damon and his madness - because when he tries to break her mind, she fights back! But mostly, I loved that she never tried to change him... ❤😭
This book was a fucking roller coaster! the plot was intense, unexpected, painful, dark (but also quite romantic, in a twisted way 😂) and oh, SO HOT!!! (Although, believe it or not, it was a slow-burn)
It's not an easy story, it even caused me quite a bit of discomfort... but that's what made it so special for me. 💥💥💥
📚 “𝑰 𝒏𝒆𝒆𝒅 𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒐 𝒉𝒖𝒓𝒕 𝒎𝒆, 𝒃𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒖𝒑 𝒑𝒂𝒊𝒏, 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒊𝒇 𝑰 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒐𝒏𝒆, 𝑰 𝒘𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒇𝒆𝒆𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓." 📚
There were some slow parts at first - when it was unclear what's going on - but in the second read I appreciated and understood them more. Also, the ending was too sweet, in a way that didn't quite fit the beginning of the book, but after everything I went through with the characters, for me, it was perfect. ❤
So if you like dark psychological suspense books about 'Enemies to Lover' (they hated each other so much that I was SURE their story would have a completely different ending! LOL 😂) - I highly recommend this series. 🔥
• I listened to the AUDIO version. 🎧
3.5⭐
If its something weird
And it don't look good
Who ya gonna call?
MY THERAPIST!! (I don't have one but I'll be glad to have one now)
Why did I enjoy this book, I was so ready to hate it.
I just wanted to read about 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻 and his psychopathic nature.
But I did. I enjoyed this 🤫🫢
I really really really genuinely hated him with all my heart.
Guess what?!
I don't hate him anymore.
I don't entirely love him.
But I at least like him now 😩.
Seeing him turn from a villain a hero, fixing his relationship with his sister and friends.
Having a decent conversation with 𝗥𝗶𝗸𝗮 without trying to murder her.
I hate the things that happened to him when he was kid.
His bitch mother and whore father. Oh my God I hope they rot in hell what are they even made of.
Knowing how he delt with the mental pain he was feeling by hurting himself physically killed him.
And knowing that 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 taught him that when she was 8 it means she was on his mind all those years 😩.
I loved 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 so much, so far the best female character in this series.
She is so strong despite her disability 😭,
Her character is well written, I just liked everything about her.
So this goes blind when she was 8 years old, by falling of a tree house while being with 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻 in there.
If I remember correctly they meet again only when she is 14, at a party in her house, so he recognise her and 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻 being 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻 he decides to scare, but they became friends and then when she turned 16 they became more than friends. And all of this happening and she doesn't know that this guy she is falling in love with is 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻.
Only when she slept with him and a video of them get published online she finds out who he is.
And that's how he was accused of rape and spent three years in prison, solitary confinement.
This book follows the story after when he gets out and now now he wants revenge. Promises of hurting her and distroying her life, and he kind of did a little at first but mostly he was just drooling more than her dog over her, I mean the dog stopped even coming to her after meeting 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻 , they kind of switched places, nah I kind like the sound of it, dog 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻😩 excuse my broken humour.
Anyways.
This monster has feelings after all, and that freaking scene when he slid down the wall and talked about his feelings 🤧❤️‍🩹
I loved loved the flashbacks in thiss, it was so good, more than the present ones even.
And the last 30% of the book was action packed.
That car chase scene was soo good.
And that plot twist. It wasn't jaw dropping or anything but it surprised me I didn't see it coming.
The only thing that Is making me not rate this book higher is because of some scenes in this book that made me cringe to death.
I'm not going to talk about them because they will ruin my mood.
Also 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 & 𝗗𝗮𝗺𝗼𝗻 >>> 𝗞𝗮𝗶 & 𝗺𝗶𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹.
Overall I'm happy I didn't hate this book and definitely going to keep reading the series under the hashtag #𝗨𝗻𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗱_𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀_𝗶_𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲_𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻_𝗶'𝗺_𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱_𝘁𝗼_𝗵𝗮𝘁𝗲.
But maybe I'll take a little break from the series though.
😘❤️
𝗣𝗿𝗲-𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱:Never back down, never give up.
Continuing this series despite hating the first two books.
welcome to the first episode of rant with vee! i'm your host vee, and we'll be discussing a topic that is near and dear to my heart - books. as an avid reader, i have come across my fair share of amazing books that have moved me to tears, made me laugh, and kept me up all night. today's topic is a book that was incredibly painful for me, and i mean painful for my eyes.
[ camera zooms in on the book in her hand. ]
the book in question is *dramatic pause* kill switch by penelope douglas.
[ camera zooms back out to show vee's disgusting expression. ]
⚠️ before i dive in, i want to give a spoiler warning. if you haven't read this book, i advise you to skip this rant. but if you're like me and enjoy spoiling things for yourself before reading, then go ahead and continue.
now, i know that the majority of people looooove this book in the series. i've seen people passionately defend damonwinter, but to be honest, i don't care.
*aggressively rubs hands together* let's get started with the rant.
*intro music plays* 🎺 🥁 📯
you see, after reading the first two books in the series, corrupt and hideaway had lost all hope for the series. but so many readers raved about this book, claiming it to be the best one yet. and being someone who hates leaving a series unfinished, i gave it a chance, hoping to love it. well it turned out how much i hated it.
tsk tsk tsk
i really had major hots for damon in first two books because haha villains can slut me out and whatever, but after reading this book, he has definitely made it onto my list of top ten most annoying male main characters (after michael, of course).
*sighs*
i don't usually cuss that much, but every character in this book made me want to say a lot of not-so-nice things about them.
*ominous music swells* 🥁 🎻🪇
here's the list of reasons why i hate this book:
➛ the forty percent of this book was just excessive drama. it was over the top and completely unnecessary.
➛ damon is a pedophile. need i say more?
winter is sixteen and damon is nineteen when they have sex for the first time.
─ ⌗ "Dude, girls your own age, right out here! What the fuck?
"I don't think i can wait for her to be legal, man."
─ ⌗ "Was it that then? Did I do to Winter in high school what my father did to my mother? Did I groom her?"
➛ he had the audacity to come inside winter without her consent 😍
─ ⌗ "You came inside me," I told him. He blew out smoke, not saying anything for a moment. "And?" he finally answered, Damon's voice strong and sure.
"My father wants his grandchildren, Winter." My stomach sank, anger and shame burning my face. Oh God, if I got pregnant...
winter slut shamed her own sister for having sex with a guy (damon asked her sister to do it because he wanted to watch) but then ends up sleeping with damon without even knowing his name. pick a side, my love.
➛ what is with all the threesome scenes in this series? damon, winter, and will had one? wasn't damon supposed to be possessive? 😭
➛ speaking of will, he is supposed to be damon's best friend, but we hardly see any of him in this book.
➛ you know many authors write a female blonde character who's everyone's favorite and can do no wrong? yeah in this case it's erika fane. her character just changes all of the sudden in this book and is a mayor material. now c'mon banks is way smarter than rika then why not her? why rika? and also damon started liking her? 😭
➛ and finally, the twist that damon and rika are actually half siblings was just too much. what was miss author thinking?
*rubs sweat from brows* pheww
okay, now for the few things i actually liked about this book. the last thirty percent was somewhat tolerable, and it slightly improved my overall rating. that's it. that's all i can say.
the excessive drama, problematic characters, and unnecessary plot twists made it almost unbearable to read. i tried so hard to give this book more rating but i just can't.
all things aside, i can tell this one was a little better than previous two books, but don't think i'll be able to continue this series because i've lost my brain cells after reading this book.
*claps one time*
ha! aaaaand now that's the end of the rant. thank you so much for listening guys! i'll be back with my rants incase i dispise a book. let me know in the comments below. and don't forget to like, share, and subscribe for more rants with me, vee.
DAMON👏 WAS👏MORE👏 POSSESSIVE👏AND👏CREEPY👏TOWARDS👏BANKS👏THAN👏WINTER👏
DAMON⛓️WAS⛓️A⛓️TON⛓️LOT⛓️MORE⛓️TOXIC⛓️TOWARDS⛓️BANKS⛓️AND⛓️SHE⛓️WAS⛓️HIS⛓️FUCKING⛓️SISTER⛓️!!!!!!
to say i am disappointed might be an understatement.
this isn't the damon i was promised in hideaway. the damon in hideaway was creepy, possessive on the extreme, completely psycopathic, lethal, vicious and the star of the fucking show. damon in his own book is annoying, lame, tamed down, all talk shit show, and a fucking clown. 🤡 It is such a shame the Damon from Corrupt and Hideaway had such potential, but the end result is an immature, entitled, arrogant ass, AND A BORE who thinks he is a lot scarier and tougher than he is!
so you're telling me, damon didn't even allow banks to be a woman but is completely fine with sharing winter with other people?
the damon i loved dragged banks all the way from hell and trapped her in a closet if a man as much as looked at her, he manhandled her, treated her like dirt, threw her around roughly, forbade her to wear women's clothes and fuck it- even went as far as to bandage her all up so that none of the men can even notice her— THAT WAS THE MAN I WANTED!! NOT A COWARD FREAK WHO SPENDS 500 PAGES JUST STARING AT HIS WOMAN FROM THE CORNER OF THE ROOM IN AN ATTEMPT TO "CREEP" HER OUT. dude you ain't no batman.
seriously, about 75% of this book is just winter doing some shit and damon watching her from a corner, the floor would be creaking, and we'll be hearing the thud of footsteps, the air will be heavy from his presence, and then his breath will be in her cheeks and then a whisper—"i'll fucking ruin you👹👺👻🦇😈⛓️"— and poof! the batman has disappeared. again.
bro pray tell me a single thing you did to ruin her life. all you did was ruin MY life by turning me into a yawn-i-philic.
winter is such a lame and boring character. her weakassery was amplified by how badass banks was in the previous book. on that note— WHY WAS BANKS SNUBBED IN DAMON'S BOOK!?!? it's like we completely forgot that banks is the woman damon turned a full psyco for...
rather than banks playing an important role... bcz ofc yk she is damon's sister... RIKA FUCKING YAWNCASE took so many pages of this goddamn book!!! bcz now all of a sudden, damon likes her so much. yeah, the same damon who spent the entirety of the past 2 books killing this bitch, is now smitten by her. like for fucks sake we don't need to know how damon finds rika attractive and how she must be fun in bed and how she's a female version of damon and it turns him on and how she's one of the woman who he'll kill for and how she's so smart and cunning and a masterplayer and she's so blah fucking blahly perfect— I DON'T CARE!!!
Damon and Winter had negative chemistry!! you can try hallucinating me to sell that they had an ounce of chemistry and i still wouldn't buy it. the angst wasn't angsting. i wanted damon to get on his fucking knees and beg and cry for her forgiveness and winter to still reject him and then him going all beserk and completely unhinged from all the love and hate and hurting her in the worst ways possible. i wanted it to be all consuming!! instead what do we get? empty threats, more yapping, fake drama, forced storyline. damon calling her a slut and her getting mad and then damon talking about his trauma and she throwing all the fake angst outta the window and jumping his bones and confessing her undying love while he's the one acting all moody and throwing tantrums as if he shouldn't be the one crawling the fucking floor to win her love. GROVEL AND EFFORTS? WE DON'T KNOW THAT SHIT.
to sum up my thoughts— i'm disappointed because of the lack of toxicity in this book. where is the madness i was promised? why did everything feel watered down? (pun intended) why did this feel like a dark romance from shein? and to say that this was supposed to be the best book in the series- 🤡
surprise surprise surprise! the infamous, thrilling, toe-curling and heart-racing series: Devil's Night, is mediocre at best. 💩
The Hero: Damon Torrence - Went to prison for three years for raping Winter. Though it wasn’t rape, she had been willing but underage while he was 19. Her father was the Mayor who hated Damon. Damon is one of The Four Horsemen (former kings of their high school).
The heroine: Winter Ashby - blind daughter of the mayor, she used to take dance lessons from Damon’s mother. Winter was sheltered as a child and
The Love Story: Damon met Winter at an event for his mother’s ballet classes when they were young that was the day she lost her sight. They met again later when Winter was enrolled in the same high school as Damon, who was senior at that point.
The Four Horsemen consist of Michael Crist, Kai Mori, Damon Torrence and Will Grayson. Damon was sent to prison for 33 months, while Kai and William were sentenced to 28 months each for beating up a cop who was abusive to his sister. William had been in love with the sister.
Michael wasn’t arrested but felt guilt the entire time his friends were away, thinking it was his fault. In Corrupt, the guys had recently gotten out of prison and were doing their best to get revenge. Only things went bad and Damon tried to kill them along with Michael’s brother Trevor. After that, in Hideaway, Damon hid from and taunted his former friends.
You feel for Damon in this one, in previous books, we found out that he was sexually abused by his crazy mother and a father who thinks women are things to be used by men and are good for nothing else. Damon dealt with it by becoming a monster who likes to use people for his own enjoyment, to keep his mind off his own pain.
Damon explains what went on in prison for him and for Will and Kai. Damon had it much worse and after hearing that, you can’t really blame him for wanting revenge. But you also see a bit of a softer side of Damon, when he was with Winter while they were still in high school.
Though Damon is one of those guys that just when you start to like him, he does or says something to show how much of a villain he can be when he wants, and he wants to far too often. And be warned, the scenes between Damon and his mother are more than disturbing. I was cheering when he finally stood up to her.
The narrators are the same as in the previous two books. I liked the male narrator a lot better for this book. He adopted a lower vocal range in this book as Damon than in the other two books and it went well with the character of Damon and I liked it quite a bit.
