People who are familiar with manga, especially shoujo manga, will find this to be especially funny. This seems to just exist to turn shoujo stereotypes and cliches on their heads. It is self-aware and genre savvy, and you can tell that Tsubaki-sensei had a good time with it.

"Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun" is a 4-koma style comic. For those not in the know, this means a 4-panel comic that is typically humorous, kind of like those found in American newspapers. Other popular series that are 4-koma include Azumanga Daioh, which this manga reminds me of.

The first volume can be summed up as "girl confesses her love, guy is oblivious, girl ends up being his manga assistant, comedy ensues." There's not much else to this series, and there doesn't need to be. Just sit back and laugh.

For those who have seen the anime, it's worth reading to laugh at all the same jokes again, but don't expect any new content. Each "issue" was essentially turned into an episode of the anime, so this covers the first half of the anime, give or take. For those who haven't seen the anime, read or watch whichever you want first. You won't be missing anything. :)

I read the first two volumes from my library. Clean art style -- the eponymous hero is a high school lad who draws (professional) girl's manga, hijinks ensue. Nozaki looks very much like Domeki from xxxHolic, and is amusingly focused on his work, to the frustration of the girl who fancies him.

Interesting format -- each entry or unit of the story is a single page divided into four rectangles placed vertically, read from top to bottom, like a Japanese version of a four-panel daily comic read left to right. So the sense of story arc takes a while to build.

I believe there is an anime, which I may try to hunt up.

Exactly like the anime but in manga form. Amusing, not particularly deep or complex, but it delivers on the laughs and promises a smidgen of romance somewhere down the line (about 20 volumes later, no doubt).

I watched the anime for this back when it aired, and I loved it! It had great characters, hilarious story, lots of references, and so much more! Then I heard about the manga being translated to English and I knew I just had to have it.

Now, it is finally here, and I really liked the manga. Though I have had the same problem I had with other manga that I read after I watched their anime and where the anime followed the manga closely. I just knew most of the jokes, and they fell flat now. They were still fun, but they just missed the impact they had when I first saw them.

Still I was delighted to see the characters again, to see Mikorin, Sae-chan, Sakura, our Prince and her murderous escort, and most important Nozaki-kun! Because even though Sakura is the main character, Nozaki takes a huge role. And thankfully so, as he is fantastic, silly, hilarious, brilliant, but also a huge idiot. He doesn't see it when people don't like him, he is at times rude, but doesn't see it, and when he makes up situations for his manga they are often just silly things that get scrapped quite soon.
His manga is brilliant (I love how he just uses his main guy character's head for everyone else, which causes quite a bit of confusion).

The manga is 4-koma, and I must say that it fits this series perfectly. Not always will it work, but with this one? I think if it was one long story, or chapters of stories, that the puns, the jokes, and the silly stuff would not work. That the characters wouldn't come out right. So I am really happy with this. Though it is a bit different from normal 4-koma stuff, instead of 2 times 4 panels, this one is just 1 time 4 panels.

I really loved to read about the manga process (and we even have a part about how stuff works), and I can't wait to read the rest of the manga to read more about how manga is made. :)

I also have to say that I feel sorry for Sakura, she loves Nozaki so much, and he? He doesn't even notice. Just thinks she is a fan. I do hope that the later books will show some progress about this.

All in all, this is one manga I would recommend if you are looking for a hilarious series with an oblivious character.

One of my major goals for 2024 when it comes to reading is to read what I want without exception. Part of that for me is continuing to read a lot of manga without feeling weird about it or like I'm suddenly less of a reader because this is one of my preferred mediums/genres of books.

Another one of my goals is to read more manga from women authors and manga with intersectional/feminist themes.

This series fell into my lap while I was beginning to craft a mini book club (mainly for me and my gf) dedicated to these very goals.

And at risk of divulging too much here, I really needed a story like this at this moment in my life. It feels like being in your 20s is a constant battle between doing too much and not doing nearly enough, failing and succeeding seemingly simultaneously, and having the best and worst times. It's exhausting and I'm always busy (and sleep-deprived), but it can also be ridiculously fun and fulfilling to be at this age. 2024 is, for me, all about positively managing that messy balance and living in a way that feels good and healthy for me. My reading and writing is a huge part of that (and an unexplainably massive part of my day to day life in general).

So, it's nice to get back to my roots with something like this. Super character driven, balls to the walls chaotic plot, and frenetic pacing that doesn't let up. It's kind of a collection of interconnected shorts in the way the action plays out, which makes for an interesting read. The characters are extremely goofy but compelling, and I'm a sucker for shojo men who defy gender roles. Stories about friendship also always get me in my feels, and volume one is already beginning to set up those strong platonic bonds that I love to see.

I also really like the discussion of the craft of art and writing here. It's pleasant to see a manga focus on people in the same craft with different strengths coming together to create something as a community.

I also laughed A LOT.

I'm rambling but my bottom line is I loved this and can't wait to see where it goes. It's silly. It's light. It's fun. I'm a fan!

I've already watched the anime, so none of this is new to me. However, it's still very funny and enjoyable. The characters are so stupid and endearing. I was surprised to find out this is 4-koma, but it's not like the story needs a more elaborate format.

Re-read 2 October 2023

There's not much relationship development, and with the recent addition of new characters, it seems like it's going to drag on for much longer than I would've liked. It also felt like the gags were becoming more desperate. What a shame...

I revised my rating from 4 to 3 stars.

---

Romance shoujo + (usually) 4-panel gag manga? My initial thought was that I wasn't going to enjoy it; it'd be too stupid; it'd be strange having jokes left, right and centre.

And for the most part, that held true. What was unexpected weren't just the weird final-panel gags (some of which were hilarious, and others were... a tad weird), as well as the genuine romantic interest this manga stirred in me. I wanted to know what happened to each of the pairs and whether they'll find romance with each other (especially Sakura Chiyo & Nozaki Umetarou, but we know that's not going to happen anytime soon!).

Ultimately though, the manga's play on gap moé - that is, where a character presents one way, but then has an unexpected side, such as in Nozaki's case, where he presents himself as a typical high school student, tall and quite athletic, but he also has another side to himself where he is also a mangaka (but also a mangaka who has had no experience in love!) - was initially fun and amusing, but gradually wore me down with the constant look out for sudden shifts in character interests or skills.

Still, I'll probably end up reading more of it, coz it is so weird, and I also want to find out what ultimately happens with the romantic pairings.

Koplak.

Description:
To the eyes of classmate Chiyo Sakura, high school student Umetarou Nozaki--brawny of build and brusque of tongue--is a dreamboat! When Chiyo finally works up the courage to tell Nozaki how she feels about him, she knows rejection is on the table...but getting recruited as a mangaka's assistant?! Never in a million years! As Chiyo quickly discovers, Nozaki-kun, the boy of Chiyo's dreams, is a manga artist...a hugely popular shoujo manga artist, that is! But for someone who makes a living drawing sweet girly romances, Nozaki-kun is a little slow on the uptake when it comes to matters of the heart in reality. And so Chiyo's daily life of manga making and heartache begins!

My Thoughts:
This was good. I love all the characters and the story is fun. I guess the only thing that throws me off is the pacing. It's too quick but that's to be expected. I excited to read the rest of these soon. :)

Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun came to bring me happiness in these stressful days. It's been a while since I laughed this much -Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun is a funny, sweet and heart lighted story tinted with romance, without much plot but definitely much nuance. The style is simple and cute, working perfectly with the comedy aspect of the story.

I first watched the anime and, while the manga is still pretty good, the anime is so well done it leaves the manga a little behind. Even if I want to read the manga from the very beginning, the anime adaptation is so nicely done that I’d recommend it better. I think I could enjoy the manga this much because I watched the anime first, actually!

The things I loved the most in this volume were the little Todoma story and just Kashima’s face in general. I loved Kashima in the anime and the manga certainly makes justice to her princely face!

I loved this so much please watch the anime if you want to feel happiness again!!!

This is a manga series set in the high school years of a famous shoujo mangaka, who in reality is a tall, almost intimating guy called Nozaki. Sakura likes him and somehow they start hanging out ‘cause she helps him with his manga, as well as other classmates.

There is no big drama, since this is a comedy with bits of romance in it. To me, it’s hilarious and wholesome at the same time! There is not one single character that doesn’t make me smile.

Of course, Mikorin is my absolute favorite but Nozaki, Sakura and Kashima are just right there at the top too!

I’m re-reading the series with a friend and it’s truly the best! Oh, how I wish there was a 2nd season for the animated adaptation.

Read it for the #JPLitReadathon.

I’ve always been a fan of Izumi Tsubaki, ever since her series Oresama Teacher, and for the most part I really enjoy Monthly Girls’s Nozaki-kun. The humour can be hit or miss, the hits are absolutely hilarious and have me laughing so hard I can’t breathe, while the misses, what can I say? I find there is often word play in manga that gets lost in translation, it’s something the scanlators do well and the official translators seem to fall short on. But where Monthly Girls’s Nozaki-kun really shines is with its characters, they’re all so dynamic and fun. This series hosts some of my favourite manga characters ever and I love them all.

This was a fun story, with lots of laugh out loud moments. It reads like a list of mini scenarios, so there aren't any of the slower moments of transition between scenes. Because of this, even though its mostly talking heads throughout, it reads fast and with a lot of energy. Sometimes this speed made it a little difficult to tell who was saying what on panels where the speakers weren't in the image. It also took some time getting used to the shift between real life and the manga imaginings of the characters, as there were no obvious clues (such as change in style or shading), but after a little while I was able to pick up on the subtle clues.

Reading Progress : 7 Volumes / 79 Chapters

So entertaining and thoroughly funny! This is one shoujo manga that doesn't rely on romance or cheap humour to keep the pace going. In fact, most of the humour relies on its sense of meta. The gang's attempts to 'reconstruct' all the manga tropes in real life are so darn hilarious.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki kun is dependent on its ensemble cast of characters; and at 7 volumes, the secrets are just coming out one -by- one from the woodworks.

When I first opened the book, I didn't realize I was reading a collection of 4-koma. It gave me some initial whip-lash. I did proceed to enjoy many of the gags, though I always find translations of comedy extremely awkward. There are some "explanations" as to what the jokes mean -- but as Dilbert says, "It's not funny if you have to explain it". It was ok. I might enjoy it better on a re-read.

Monthly Girls' Nozaki-kun, Vol. 1 is one of those books where I wasn’t the right audience. I’m trying to read more manga and graphic novels, but this is one of those stories where it is best understood if you’re already a fan of manga. None of the jokes worked for me, as I’m without the knowledge needed to understand them fully. Plus, the style wasn’t really for me.

Put simply, this is very much a case where I’m the issue, not the story.
