Beastars #6

BEASTARS, Vol. 6

Rate this book
At this high school, instead of jocks and nerds, the students are divided into predators and prey.

At a high school where the students are literally divided into predators and prey, friendships maintain the fragile peace. Who among them will become a Beastar—a hero destined to lead in a society naturally rife with mistrust?

As gray wolf Legoshi and dwarf rabbit Haru’s relationship intensifies, gray wolf Juno’s jealousy grows. Red deer Louis’s mysterious absence from school has ramifications for both his friends and his enemies. And while the lion gang Shishi-gumi chooses a new leader, Cherryton Academy’s headmaster attends the Council of Living Beings to choose the school’s next Beastar. Plus, a flashback to Legoshi’s and Jack’s puppyhoods and the social engineering following the world war that led to the current fragile truce between carnivores and herbivores.

At a high school where the students are literally divided into predators and prey, it’s personal relationships that maintain the fragile peace. Who among them is a Beastar—an academic and social role model destined to become a leader in a society naturally rife with mistrust? Is it Legoshi, the scary looking but soft hearted wolf? And what is up with this murder?!

This volume was fascinating. Beastars is a series I keep trying to quit thinking that it’s just not my speed. I love fantasy, magic and romance. This doesn’t have any of that. BUT it does have human nature reordered to fit animal characters and races. It’s fascinating how different social issues are brought up under the veneer of this beast world.

This time we explore the urges a herbivore experiences trying to mate with a carnivore. It’s unique but also somehow speaks to you. We also look at two females, a herbivore and a carnivore, and how they interact over a male. What beats out the villainess is the hero’s honesty in looking at his feelings. It’s so refreshing!

The most fascinating though is the herbivore meant to become beastar. He’s gone totally off the rails and even though it should have been obvious to me I was shocked with where this went. Truly I love this character who feels they must do radical things to survive.

The only really dull part of the volume was the end to me. The city decides to act on the Beastar title. I’m not sure of their motivation or the significance. It’s very confusing. While I understand the concept of Beastar I don’t get the connection to a high school. This made me very underwhelmed with where the next volume could be going.

Beastars is a fascinating series where the world is remade in animal races. It’s a look at humanity that’s quite beastial. Don’t be deceived that this is for kids to read, this is totally for adult and older teen readers to delve into real worldly issues.

This feels very much a transitional episode in the Beastars story. It's between major episodes, between decisions, between terms.

The author does a great job with the "we're all the protagonist in our own stories" theme -- Legoshi and Haru just had a horrific, violent experience and almost died. But the school administration only cares that they broke curfew, and the other students only want to gossip about whether they had sex.

I'm not sure how I feel about the Louis/lion mob/Beast Council plot elements. I guess I'll see where they go next volume.

If you don't allow yourself to get caught up in the overheated emoting of all the characters, this series starts to seem pretty silly and stupid. This volume is simply an overwrought emotional check-in with every major character, and its only real plot development -- regarding Louis' fate after being last seen surrounded by lions last volume -- is a real groaner that nearly completely undercuts my confidence in the creator's storytelling abilities.

How many more of these do I have checked out of the library? Five?! Oh noooooooooo.

I'm out.

This had potential but has taken a very weird turn that I am not at all enjoying. Apparently dogs and cats are genetically engineered and a teenager is the head of the lion Yakuza...because reasons.

A very eventful night at the Meteor Festival as a tense love triangle forms for Legoshi, Haru and Juno. Prideful Juno shines the spotlight on him to one-up Haru, while flustered Haru is doubtful if she and him could have a romantic relationship because of his beastly instincts. Later, Louis makes a shocking return at school, only to make an announcement that no one expected and we see him in an even more shocking new position. A (100%/Outstanding)

Beastars Volume 6
5/5 stars

Legoshi is such a simp. He’s such a fucking simp. I adore him and will not tire of seeing this soft boi wolf and his love for a complicated bun. Also was really engrossed in all the plot points surrounding Louis and him leading the gang and Juno wanting to take his place as a Beastar.

It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a manga series to the point that I need to pre-order so I have the next volume as soon as it comes available—Beastars has become that for me. The 2 months between each release make me antsy to find out what happens next. And it's been even longer since one made me think past a surface level about world lore. I love the emotive artwork in this series, and even though it's imperfect, I love what it's trying to do. There are no truly Good or Evil characters; everyone is complex with layers to them. I feel it's unfair and a bit dismissive to draw a parallel to Disney's Zootopia—the only real thing they have in common is distrustful herbivores living with carnivores in a very human feeling world. Beastars is so much braver than Zootopia could hope to be.

The first part of Volume 6 covers the same part of the story as the last episode of season one of Netflix's anime adaptation of this series. But the manga delves a bit deeper into motivation behind words and actions, and now I have a better understanding of the Legoshi/Haru cliff scene.

The second part of this volume lets us know what happened to Louis immediately following the action in Volume 5, as well as contains a story about well lil' Jack and Legoshi and how they formally met and began their friendship. I had often wondered if this is a world without human involvement at all, where all of the domestic dog and cat breeds in the story came from, and a small tidbit of information is dropped in this volume. I hope we will learn more about the herbivore/carnivore war that happened ~100 years prior to the start of this series and still has repercussions in the modern day.

Now to wait 2 more months for volume seven. :P

Can be 2.5... but for now, 2.
I don't know what it is, but this story is getting really weird. legoshi is officially a nice guy trope, he has completely lost his appeal to me. That's sad cuz he's my favorite character so far... so we got to the point where Louis is just pathetic also. six volumes and still can't feel any truth in almost anything that hal says or does. I like Juno, she doesn't seem inconsistent like the others. but I'm tired of seeing all the female protagonists wanting to have sex with this wolf! Btw, Juno is right, legoshi just wants to be with the rabbit because he denies his identity as a wolf. nothing against the inter-species relationship, I don't want legoshi to be with Juno either... would like some junoXlouis tho, but now he's just lame. I just want these characters to stop making bad decisions for once!

Thank you to NetGalley, VIZ Media, and Paru Itagaki for the opportunity to read BEASTARS Volume 6 in exchange for an honest review.

So...speaking of honesty...I actually already have this book preordered, but with the whole COVID-19 thing, I have no idea when I will receive my copy, and when I saw it on NetGalley, I was like "Sure, why not read it early and enjoy a nice reread of the whole series when I do eventually get my physical copy?"

I utterly adore this series. It's kind of like Zootopia, but more violent, political, sexual, and all-around a bazillion times better. I do not follow much newer manga these days, but BEASTARS is an absolute auto-buy for me. I have seen the anime in both Japanese and English, love it, but the manga is just so much...more!

With this manga, I am always on the edge of my seat, eager to see how Legoshi and Haru's relationship will turn out, and eager for the drama among the other characters between them as well.

The middle of Volume 6 is where season one of the show ends, and I am excited to see the next part of the story. I am already a carnivore ready to devour the next volume. And the next. AND the next. As of January, BEASTARS is one of my most anticipated reads, and the patience of waiting for the next volume is a near-impossible feat. The end of this volume was...unexpected, but hey, I wonder who the next Beastar is going to be? ;p

If you have not read this series yet, please do yourself the greatest favor in the world and pick up BEASTARS Volume 1 now. That is all. :)

Legoshi swore to make Haru happy by making himself stronger. Louis became the new head of the Shishigumi, and he is now controlling the Black Market. I wasn't expecting that all, but given how deep the corruption has spread its roots in their society, it seemed like a logical choice. Meanwhile, Juno is trying to steal Legoshi from Haru. The writing style is very poetic, I love it!

Less action than the previous volume, that's for sure, but still so interesting and engaging.

I particularly enjoyed the deeper insight into this world and society structure, and how cats and dogs are genetically engineered creatures, or "fakes", here.

Louis is back with a surprising (or not so much?) twist of events, and Legoshi, Haru and Juno keep being stellar.

Jumping soon into volume 7, to possibly find out who is going to be the next Beastar! (Or probably not, but who cares, this series is awesome anyway).

An end to a pretty solid arc! The last half of this volume was a bit filler but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I’m excited to finally watch the anime now that I’m caught up to the English releases (even though we’re super behind the japanese ones).

Devo ancora capire se Juno mi piace o meno come personaggio, ma in generale la trama funziona bene anche grazie a lei, quindi nulla da ridire da questo punto di vista.
