The Devil I Don't Know

Rate this book
Jacob

My father is dying, and I’ve been called back to Brooklyn to take my place as the head of the Italian syndicate. After a seven year absence, my first test of loyalty is to marry the granddaughter of the Irish mob’s leader. I may not want a wife, but I’ll kill anyone who tries to harm her.

I only hope she doesn’t expect love in our marriage. I can’t—won’t—love her. Not ever. I don’t have it in me.

Brenna

My life has always been about duty. When my grandfather signs a marriage contract, I become a pawn in an alliance between the Irish and the Italians. Once again, I’m bound by duty.

I’ve always been invisible—the person who fades into the background—except soon my new husband begins to see me.

He’s a Brooklyn king, but will our enemies destroy my chance to become his queen?

An intriguing mafia arranged-marriage romance read.
Likeable and easy to connect with characters, well written and nicely paced, yet there were enough plot holes that had me wondering if I had skipped a couple of paragraphs.

Three stars might actually be a somewhat bloated rated for this...it felt very rushed and unfinished in a lot of ways while also seeming too slow in others (bedroom *cough* bedroom); however, it had decent bones and I am just such a complete sucker for all things mafia smut.

So keep that in mind.

The Devil I Don't Know is the first book in the "Brooklyn Kings" series but this is also a very new to me author. I just saw some readers chatting about this one on Instagram and I was intrigued. I was immediately drawn into this one here and I will admit that the trope surrounding this one is what originally drew me into this here. I just have such a weakness for arranged marriages and in this one it just has such a traditional feel to the relationship. So if you are fans of Cora Reilly, Katee Robert or Neva AltaJ, then I actually recommend this one to you.

Now the writing isn't super polished or as drawn out as some readers might be used to, it did take me a bit to get used to it. But once I got used to it, I was completely hooked into this one here. I had such a wonderful time with this one. I just adored the characters here. It was so refreshing to have a hero that was so patient and understanding and not lashing out at the heroine. Sometimes we see this in arranged marriages, but in this one, they really worked as a team and he was so protective. I adored the heroine as well, she was such a good match. She was strong but also kind and empathatic . I found her to be so refreshing within this story.

Overall I had a blast of a time with this one and can't wait to see what is delivered in the next one, its enemies to lovers, so definitely will bide my time maybe on it.

08/08/21 - not on KU. $3.99. I read sample, but will wait for sale. I am not a fan of dual POVs and the frequent switch took away from the story.

Plus you can’t compete with a dead wife. Period.

The Devil I Don’t Know is a gritty, intense, steamy, and sometimes violent story about the Mob. Jacob is the heir to the Italian Mob, and returns after his self-imposed exile to take the reigns from his dying father. Brenna is the granddaughter of the head of the Irish Mob, and her life is so different as she’s been isolated from the mob’s violence by her mother. In order to fight the Russian mob, Jacob’s father and Brenna’s grandfather have arranged for them to marry in order to combine the forces of the Italians and Irish to fight the Russians. Both Brenna and Jacob are against the marriage, but know their duty to the families and go through with the marriage in hopes they can a least be civil to each other and perhaps even become friends.

This book is grittier than most books I read, however, the love story is very good, and the characters of Jacob and Brenna are well developed and likable, despite their roles in the families. This was very fast-paced, and I just flew through the book.

I recommend this book to readers who like tough, strong gritty characters and a steamy romance.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Loved it! Sweet & Hot! The H is caring and humble, yet still Alpha hot!

This was an easy read and still surprisingly good and moving. We know from the synopsis this is an arranged marriage. The Irish and Italian mobs have formed an alliance for the purpose of defeating the Russians who are trying to encroach in their areas. The h, who has been sheltered most of her life from the family business is told by her grandfather, the head of the Irish mob, that she will marry the heir to the Italian mafia in 10 days to secure this alliance.

The emotions she goes through between the time she is told and the wedding day are realistic and moving. You will feel her anger, frustration and fear during this period. You'll feel sorry for her and some of you may even cry with her. The H, is not too happy about the marriage either, but he agrees knowing that in order to take his dying father's place as head of the Italian mafia, he would have to prove his loyalty to the other families. This marriage, to secure the alliance with the Irish, is how he will be required to do it.

After the ceremony her grandfather takes them into his office to sign the wedding license. She hesitates, fearing to turn her life over to a total stranger she just met. She knows nothing about him. Will he be cold, brutal and violent like her grandfather? At her hesitation, her grandfather displays that violent brutality towards her and the H comes to her rescue. After threatening her grandfather, if he ever lays hands on his wife again, he turns to her and says.

.....“Our marriage is a business arrangement, so I understand your being opposed to it. Neither of us wants this, but one thing I can promise is that I will never lay hands on you in anger.”

A true hero! The gentleness in his eyes after the rage she'd seen when he dealt with her grandfather gives her hope and she signs her life away to him.

From that point on, it's a slow burn as they get to know each other, learn what each expects from the other, from the marriage. He begins to realize she is stronger than her family gave her credit for, but that she has a kind and caring heart. The fact that he "sees" her when she's always felt unseen by her family, and that he cares about what she wants and expects from the marriage as well, gives her courage to make her own demands. As they discover each other, their expectations and desires grow.

I love her transition from sheltered, introverted girl who kept to herself, to the young woman who was tired of being lonely, refused to be sheltered and unseen anymore and demands her husband's attention. I also love that when he doesn't touch her on their wedding night (he has a past and has issues about moving forward) she attempts to seduce him and eventually succeeds! You wonder how an innocent virgin can seduce?.... Well, she's an avid reader (romance novels included). And lets face it, if she reads the romance novels I read....she's definitely not ignorant about sex in all it's aspects! Her attempts at seduction are entertaining as is her boldness. Their encounters are actually sweet AND hot!

A dangerous situation with the h towards the end, adds excitement and a little angst and ultimately, after the rescue, leads to admissions of love. The transition from strangers to love is handled well and is believable. Both characters are multidimensional and very likeable. I truly enjoyed this and read it in one day! Because I also cried with the h in the beginning and chuckled a few time at some of their interactions later on, 5 stars! This will definitely go on my re-read list when I need something light, yet still hot and exciting! And I will definitely read others in the series; each is stand-alone with different characters from this book.

Beauty and the Beast with a mafia slant…so much xxx tension!
Love the cover! Love the Prologue! Love this trope! I’ve always been a sucker for a man who tries so hard to be mean in order to keep his feelings from attaching to the woman. Jacob/Emilio tries so hard to not want this relationship with Brenna to work. But why? We do find out and it is heartbreaking. There are warnings to mention: references to rape but not on page, brutality because it’s mafia-related and physical abuse.
After seven years of self-imposed exile, Jacob has been called back home by his dying father to take over the reigns of the “Brooklyn Kings.” Not everybody is happy about his return and that’s counting himself. He knew this day would come. In a bid to overpower the Russian mob, an arranged marriage between the Irish mob’s leader’s 24yo granddaughter, Brenna and Jacob who is in his mid-thirties is planned. Both Jacob and Brenna are unhappy but can they become friends if not lovers? The evolution of this marriage is superb with all the feels and steam a reader could want. Although you may sense what is on the horizon for Brenna, when it comes, it is still tragic.
This was one of those books where having to go to work got in the way. I read at break, at lunch and of course when I got home. This well-written page-turner comes highly recommended to readers of mafia stories, Beauty and the Beast stories or even enemies to lovers stories. I volunteered to read an ARC of this book. I already need to read Pierce’s story next!

The Devil I Don't Know is a mafia original story by L.K. Shaw. She takes two characters Jacob and Brenna and forces them together in a marriage made in hell. Jacob is to take over the mafia family his father is leaving him. Jacob had left his family to heal due to a family issue. To come back he must marry Brenna to keep the peace.

Brenna is a wonderfully sweet character that you will grow to love. Over the course of the book, she will grow up and learn to fight for what she wants, which will include Jacob. These two have a lot to learn about each other and about whom they can trust. But it will all be worth it when they find their HEA!

The Devil I Don't Know is a wonderful beginning to a new series by L.K. Shaw! I am so excited to see where it goes and who is up next.

So listen, every single book you read isn't going to resonate with you. I certainly know that since I devour books. But I feel the need to support my Indie Authors so I will continue to read them. Always. I've been reading this author since she first started, met her before she was an author. IMHO is this her best story, I don't think so, but it's put together well, the next in the series is out in July, and there is a third planned. There isn't a cliff hanger ending, you get all the hearts and sexy times expected in a gritty dark"er" romance, and you get the suspense you were hoping for.

I liked these characters, I like the genre of forced marriage for the sake of the family, and I like the holes in the story that leaves open other stories for the series. Solid 3.5 on this story because I truly wanted more gritty. I am SUPER excited for the story of Pierce because I feel he is going to be even grittier, and I am all about it.

I absolutely loved this book! Once I started this book I could not help but binge read it! The chemistry between Jacob and Brenna is beyond hot. On the one hand, you have Brenna who is an introvert that is sheltered and loves to read. She is a very relatable character with just the right amount of sass. Jacob is an extreme syndicate king hottie who is troubled by his past. Their marriage was thrust upon them in the name of duty, but can they make it into something more? Or will the same world that put them together tear them apart?

This is my first book by this author, and I was definitely not disappointed! I cannot wait for the rest of the books in the series! (Note: this is a standalone. All the books in the series feature a different couple, each of which we meet in this first book. There is no cliffhanger for Jacob and Brenna’s story.)

A review of this book in 2 words - snooze fest

This book was so boring I should have DNFed it instead of struggling through. There was barely a plot, characters who are caricatures, no character arc one day the girl is shy and timid the next day she is demanding the H to fuck her, her exact words....I mean.... what???? The prose was passable at best. If anyone is looking for a mindless read with a bunch of plot holes and nothing interesting happening then this is the book for you

First time reading this author and I am definitely down to read more. The writing flowed really smoothly and it was easy reading. The MCs were very likable, with Jacob not being an asshole and Brenna making the best of the situation she was put in. The secondary characters made a great impression and I look forward to reading their stories as well. Overall a quick and enjoyable arranged marriage read that wasn't too dark.

I LOVED THIS BOOK
this was my first mafia romance, and my first book by this author, and let me tell you the way this shit did not disappoint. This had me on the edge of my seat. I’ll literally finished it in a day. I understand that it is fairly short, but this book made it so hard to stop reading. Every single chapter was important. Nothing was wasted.

I loved this arranged marriage, forced proximity theme. The MMC was AMAZING MACHO HANDSOME POWERFUL AND STRONG ALL IN ONE hot Italian man with Cognac colored eyes. I googled that. Beautiful. I loved watching them fall in love. Honestly at first I really thought this book was going to be just that. Just a romance but the suspense and the danger??? Chefs kiss. I highlighted the crap out of this ebook he literally says touch her and die and ********swooooonnnnnnnnn*******

I had a great image of all the characters but Gio was the bodyguard assigned to Brenna and I couldn’t help but picture Sergei from Lizzie McGuire movie lol cuz that truly was the vibe he was giving me idk why.

I cannot WAIT to read the next book. This book wraps up really nicely but I’m excited to read the next book as the epilogue sets you up to really anticipate it. Highly recommend. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was fine.

I screamed through the first two thirds (slow burn! getting to know each other!) and then in the last third it got too violent for me.

👑 Bravery buried deep

Brenna is introduced as a meek quiet young lady. Forced to marry a man she's never met. But there's more to her than meets the eye. Jacob too is forced to marry to prove his loyalty. Both need to dig deep within to uncover the rat in their midst to be brave to survive. Violence. Some steamy intimacy scenes, no cheating or cliffhanger and their story ends on a happy note. Enjoy 🤓

The H still kept a vial of his ex wife's perfume til the end of the book. Like why? Not a huge probs since the h was okay with it but still.. it's like.. idk.. maybe I'm way too possessive but if I was her, I would not be okay with it. Called me insensitive but she's been dead for 7 years and the H claimed to be in love with the h so what's with the perfume? It felt disloyal tbh. Would love an epilogue about the MCs with kids but instead we got a preview for the next book. Meh.

I truly enjoyed this. The writing and storyline were engaging and I loved the H and the h:) The relationship seemed to move fast which is fine but I had wished for "more" at the end instead of the ending leading up to the next book:/ I wanted a bit more with my couple but yes, I am planning to continue with the series so we will see where they are at as the series moves along!

4.75* I absolutely loved this book! It was a nice quick easy read with enjoyable and easy to connect to characters, and an interesting plot. And don’t even get me started on the relationship between Jacob and Brenna, I loved how even though it was an arranged marriage there was still so much trust and honesty between them straight from the beginning! It was just really beautiful to read.

I did however notice a few plot holes. I’m not sure if that was by design to keep you sucked in and interested, or not but either way it worked because I couldn’t put this book down. Now that I’ve finished the book I really want to know what’s going to happen next. I’m definitely going to be giving the rest of the series a shot, and hopefully by the end of the series much of those plot holes will be resolved.

This new series is my newest favorite addiction. Mafia arranged marriage, check. Possible mole in the organization, check. Secret attraction to my new spouse, check. Action packed, check. This book checks all the boxes. I love how protective Jacob was, even at the beginning. But Alpha male to the nth degree. Brenna isn't completely oblivious to the mafia life, however she is definitely more sheltered. These two fall in love and together become the king and queen of all they survey. Their love story is divine and this series is one I'm looking forward to seeing more of.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I am a big Shaw fan, but, I have to say, this may currently be my favorite!

Brenna has been sheltered by her Irish mafia family!

Jacob has not had an easy life in his Italian mafia family. But, he's called back to begin to lead the syndicate.

An arranged marriage is meant to strengthen them against the Russians. It's a contract, only! Right?

I don't want to spoil anything but, I tingled, I smiled, I wanted to cry!

I absolutely loved this story and can't wait for Pierce's story.

I'm hoping Francesca and Gio get a story too!

I received an advanced reader copy, and this is my honest and voluntary review.

I've been waiting for Jacob's story since he had a part in another book of Ms. Shaw's. It was everything I hoped it would be. I love Jacob and have since I first met him. Yeah, he's mafia and does bad things but there is just something about him that I loved. Brenna is a perfect match for him as his "Queen" but there is a betrayal coming that no one expects. Ms. Shaw is kind of known as the Queen of twists in her stories and this is one I didn't see coming. Especially who betrayed them!!! I never guessed that!! The story kept me turning pages. Now I can't wait for Pierce and Mila's story. I need to know about her!!!!
