Alistair Oliphant has devoted his entire life to his clan’s well-being. As one of the laird’s bastard sons, he’s determined to prove his worth by managing the Oliphants’ correspondence, alliances, land stewardship, trading schedules, and about a million other (boring) aspects of keeping a busy Highland clan going.
When his father declares that whichever of his sons marries and produces a son first will become the next laird, Alistair figures his destiny has finally arrived. The only problem is that he just doesn’t have the time to find a wife…
Luckily, he doesn’t have to. Because right under his oblivious nose is a woman who is ready and willing and just waiting to hit him over the head with her long-time crush. Lara Oliphant has grown up with the Oliphant bastards, but as their best friend’s younger sister, none of them have given her a second look. Which is a shame, because she’s done quite a lot of looking when it comes to Alistair. And as a result of Lara’s embarrassingly voyeuristic lifestyle, she’d decided she’s the only one who can set the poor man straight.
Or rather…not straight. If Alistair got any straighter, she could shove a wick up his rear and call him a candle. What he needs is someone to show him how to bend, how to relax…how to have a little fun. And Lara is just the woman to do it. Assuming she can convince him to see her as a woman!
Warning: Full of naughty shenanigans and ridiculous jokes, and more than a few eye-rollingly bad puns. Come for the spicy bits, stay for the humor; welcome to another installment of the hilarious Hots for Scots series!
But it does have a overabundance of anachronisms… so much so that is almost like reading a contemporary romance book instead of a historical romance.
Kind of a historical romantic comedy rather than a historical romance…. With emphasis on the romance and comedy parts …. and almost No emphasis on the historical part.
The author is forthright about the books containing anachronisms so that was to be expected…. But I did not think it would be in such an abundant way.
The main characters lacked some depth… but they were still interesting.
The heroine was not a naive and too innocent character but knew what she liked and went for it.
Another good read from Caroline Lee. I found the book had humor. The witty banter is terrific. The funny antics between the characters ( the brothers) helped me as the reader, to enjoy the book even more. The book reads with a fast pace. The momentum, doesn’t waiver from the romance between Alistair and Lara’s blooming romance and a little erotic love play. The plot followed by the drama will attract the readers even more to reading this book. Having a big family Tis sometimes can be a handful to handle. Until next time my fellow readers... read on. I voluntary reviewed this ARC after receiving a free gifted copy.
Fast-paced, bawdy fun. I enjoyed this light-hearted, funny read about Lara and the Laird's son Allistair.
The Laird has three sets of bastard twin boys, born ruffly at the same time. Struggling to choose one to leave the clan to, he offers the first who produces a son will be a Laird and the game is on... Lara has loved Allistair for as long as she can remember and does not mind a little spying from secret passageway. The twosome has to work together to create the Laird's fiftieth birthday celebration, making a lot of mischief along the way.
Loved loved loved this story! I loved the characters and storyline so much. So many laugh out loud moments. Great great story. Lara and Alistair were just so sweet! On to the next story. 🥰🥰💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜🥰🥰
There was never a single moment in DROP IT LIKE IT’S SCOT that I was not somehow affected by the cleverly conceived scenes which were packed with humor and emotion. I do not remember the last time a story had me laughing so much, even to the point of tears during one memorable situation. Caroline Lee dreams up with some of the silliest setups, yet each one comes across as an incident that could happen because the person instigating the prank is a jokester. In this book, there are also several events which are filled with earnest comments, and I actually felt for the person speaking from their hearts. If real life is getting you down, escaping for a few hours with DROP IT LIKE IT’S SCOT will definitely brighten your mood. Some of the more noteworthy happenings in the fifth book of The Hots for Scots series will have me grinning again when these occurrences are recalled.
Though the Oliphant laird has six illegitimate sons, Alistair feels he should be the one who rules when the older man passes in the future because of his vast knowledge concerning all aspects of the clan. But with the recent stipulation of whichever son has a male child first will be the next laird, he knows his chances are slipping away as more of the men marry. Alistair thinks looking for a woman to wed will take away from his many duties, and now he has less time because he has to work with Lara Oliphant on a special project. While he may know the woman well as she is his younger sister’s good friend, he is shocked to realize Lara is not the person whom he remembers from his past interactions.
From the creatively imagined beginning scene to remarks made around little children to impassioned lessons, I was constantly entertained and fell in love with Alistair and Lara. While I have enjoyed all the couples in this original series, I believe these two are my favorite. They are spirited yet thoughtful, and lots of their banter is hilarious while other remarks are completely heartfelt. As I got to know each one better, I felt a real bond with them and wanted them to find a way to be together if at all possible.
In my review of book 4 of the Hot for Scots series I mentioned the brother wanting to be Laird, so I was a tad nervous going in to Alistair’s story. I should absolutely not have been nervous as there was no way Mrs. Lee wouldn’t do that man justice. Pretty much right out the gate, I knew things were going to be good!
Alistair is the stoic one who has given so much of himself to the clan. I am pretty sure most of his brothers have always assumed he’d be the next Laird, but has anyone (including Alistair) ever considered that maybe Alistair would like to be free to enjoy life a little more?!?!
Enter Lara who recognizes a man that needs to live a little and she is more than up for the task of getting him to relax again. There is plenty of tension-releasing moments in this fun addition to the series.
This book has a sweet friends to lovers vibe since these two have known each other pretty much their entire lives.
Alistair’s story surprised me because we see some sweet in both he and his Father. This series balances humor and human emotion so well. I remain fascinated at how the ultimatum has played out in ways I would never have expected.
Holy shite... did NOT see that craziness coming. For real. An in control woman demanding her man learn to give up control to her (wink wink nudge nudge) this author continues to make me laugh and want to come back for the next installment
Another enjoyable read in this series. Many surprises come to light in this one ... some we suspected and some that are brand new. I like the vibe of the whole family.
Listened as Audiobook. Alistair and Lara’s story, which was a sweet “girl next door” story. Alistair is in charge of much of the day to day clan details and responsibilities, and Lara has loved him from afar (or not so afar from the secret passageways). They’re paired to plan the Laird’s 50th birthday party. Lara finally convinces him to let loose a little, and in doing so, he realizes he would not choose to live without her. The typical nonsense and shenanigans between the brothers is present, with lots of silly jokes. A minor but important (and helpful!) character, Treenis, is introduced also. Rating based on this HistRomCom subgenre.
Mostly SFCP (safe for childless people) as the main characters aren’t focused on achieving pregnancy but overall the major plot point of this series, to marry off the brothers and see who can have a son first, is NSFC (clearly).
I can hardly believe how fast I am burning through this series. I’m listening to them as audiobooks performed by William Macleod and I absolutely love his voice. His performance of this book (and all 6 of them that I’ve listened to) is fantastic. He does distinctive voices for each character and his timing for the funny bits is perfect.
I love the way that Lara pursued Alistair and wooed him until he finally woke up and saw the attraction she had for him. She used the secret passages in the castle to spy on him doing naughty things by himself. She knows what’s under his kilt and she wants it for herself!
I’m writing this review after a marathon session of listening to books 4, 5, and 6 within the same 24 hour period (thank goodness I’m retired) so my reviews for these three books will probably sound very similar. I am incredibly sad that the remaining books are not yet available in audio format but I see that they are available for pre-order and will be out in early August -YAY
Drop It Like It’s Scot, Book 5 of The Hots for Scots series, was about Alistair Oliphant, one of the six illegitimate sons of Laird William Oliphant, and Lara Oliphant, the daughter of the Oliphant Castle's housekeeper, and best friend to Nessa Oliphant, the Laird's daughter. When Alistair's father gave his six sons an ultimatum to marry and produce an heir within a year, and that whichever one provided him with a grandson first would be declared the next laird, Alistair believed his dreams were finally answered. Except, with all of his responsibilities for the Clan, he simply does not have the time to find a wife. So he determined to get one of his brothers to choose a suitable wife for him and he'd marry her. Lara, having been raised with the brothers and their sister, Nessa, had always had a crush on Alistair. Unfortunately, he never noticed she had grown up into a beautiful, young, eligible woman. Since Lara knew of some secret passages in the Oliphant castle that, perhaps, most people may have forgotten about (or never learned of), she managed to sneak in unawares and watch Alistair working out, naked, in his solar when he needed a diversion from work. At Malcolm and Evelinde's wedding celebration, Alistair and his twin brother, Kiergan, were talking when Lara approached. Watching the interplay between the two, something in Alistair protested and he blurted out that the two of them should just give in and marry each other. When his twin said she was just his friend, Lara had looked at Alistair and told him her heart belonged elsewhere, then the two walked away. For the first time since he had known her, Alistair noticed that Lara was no longer a little girl, but a full-grown woman...and that made him uneasy. As the Oliphant Laird's 50th birthday was fast approaching, Alistair had been chosen from all of his siblings to assist Lara in preparing for a grand celebration. Although most of his work was caught up with, Alistair had been looking forward to a week or two to do something other than...well...work. He had hoped to be able to at least have some downtime to look for a bride. But as he realized he'd be spending that time with Lara instead, he didn't feel quite so bad...or did he? Lara decided she was the only person who could break through the walls Alistair had built up around himself and help him learn to relax for a change. In her opinion, he was overworked, stressed out, and too uptight. Encouraged by Nessa's profession that Lara should help Alistair shoulder some of his responsibilities and teach him how to take more time for himself, she set out to do just that. Once again the characters were well fleshed out and fun to read about. Seeing their relationships develop as their attitudes and outlook on life adjusted with each new chapter was a pleasure, even when one or more acted the "clot-heid" and did or said something stupid. Twists and turns were prevalent in this story, oh were they fun! The innuendoes ran rampant and the humor was off the charts as usual for this author. Secrets were revealed, passion was scalding hot, and love was found by all...well, not all but it was definitely a fun novel and one that earned a five-star rating and a place with the Keeper for the Shelves collection.
quick short stories; each story around 1 of 6 brothers and their sister.
if your a stickler for historical accuracy, don’t read these books.
There is a ‘modernism’ in the humour and dialogue (nothing that vexed me).
I love series around family members or a group of friends. I love the series even more when the author intertwines those characters throughout the book series (it’s a pet peeve when authors don’t do that because what’s the point of the series and introducing the characters if they are not going to interact throughout the series). You get past book characters in this story.
I loved the writing around the women empowerment (it wasn’t over the top for me). Badass women rock.
Movement of the book flowed for the most part. Book writing/conversation engaging. The Scottish dialogue wasn’t difficult to follow.
Laugh out loud humorous moments. There’s a modern slang to the jokes in each of the books which I found to be hilarious when reading. example ‘that’s what she said’
Romantic /sexual content (kissing, oral and love making scenes) was throughout the book. Nothing over the top, some ‘dirty’ words intertwined rightly in the story telling. Short story 3/5 hotness and steam.
Wow! With every book, I fall more in love with these Oliphant brothers. Their banter and antics will have you grinning. Caroline Lee has the amazing ability to insert humor that is witty, outrageously good, and laugh out loud. I like how she brings modern ideas and lingo into the past in such a fun way. Laura is a woman that knows what she wants and how she wants it. She's taken great care in her "research". Alistair is so uptight in the beginning that he's blinded to what really matters. Love. As you watch Alistair give up control you are on the ride with him. You can feel his life-changing and it's delightful. I could not get enough of Laura. She is tenacious and thoughtful. The steam in this book is very hot and naughty. I highly recommend this book... This whole series dear readers. You will have a blast.
Lara has been watching Alistair for years and knows every inch of his body thanks to secret passages! Alistair is uptight and weighed down by clan duties! A mandate comes to plan his dads birthday party with Lara and he starts to see her more than the best cook in the castle but as a lovely young women. Lara had despaired of Alistair ever noticing her!! When he does well she couldn't be happier! Alistair might have a great vocabulary and negotiate well but he doesn't have a clue in wooing a lass!! Lara already has some experience with bedsport thanks to Treeins lol and Alistair is jealous and doesn't know what to do with all of this pent up frustration! Another hilarious romp with the Oliphant family!
If you think Malcolm’s plan was harebrained just wait until you read how Alistair managed to muck it up in Drop It Like It’s Scot!
Alistair and Lara are the couple you always knew belonged together, but it took them awhile to get their act together…well, at least it took Alistair awhile. Their adventures in falling in love were hilarious, though I did catch myself wanting to shake some sense into Alistair a time or two.
I think they may be tied for favorite Oliphant couple. I’m looking forward to reading about Kiergan falling hard after hearing the drummer!
I devoured this in a day, maybe it was listening to the Scottish narrator but I’m pretty sure it was the hilarious spicy content. I loved Lara and her lifelong love for workaholic Alistair. Watching the eye opening of a best friends sister love interest is always fun. A delightful surprise for Alistair when he finds himself developing feelings for Lara. She is strong, independent and able to pull him out of his shell. Her self-empowered sexualism was a wonderful surprise. Once again I love the involvement of secondary characters. The small children learning all the naughty words in the women’s private conversations was hilarious. A truly memorable great read.
This is a laugh out loud sexy romp between Alastair the acting laird and Lara one of the Keeps cooks. They have known each other forever but not as a man and woman until the past couple of years. Alistair is always too busy to relax and have some fun. When he is told to plan a party with Lara he is secretly pleased. Lara sets out to teach him how to relax and have some fun. Fun turns into so much more and Alistair and Lara just need some urging to admit their love for one another. I received a complimentary copy and I am voluntarily reviewing.
Drop It Like It’s Scot, book five of Caroline Lee’s hot for Scots series continues this riotously comical series. Alistair Oliphant is the devoted son, doing everything in his power to take care of the clan and castle, but that doesn’t leave much time for himself. Lara, the housekeeper’s daughter has grown up in the castle loving Alistair, and spying on him, and she knows just what he needs - he needs her! I love the introduction of the secret passages in the castle, the humor and the love between all of the Oliphant!
This story made me laugh a good bit…Treenis. I thought it was irreverent and clever. I love a hero who is way too uptight and you couldn’t get a pencil up Alistair’s rear end. Who enters the picture, a lady who has loved him and with the machinations of others, helps Alistair learn to relax and give up control. A great story that I wanted to keep going.
This series just keeps getting better and better! Caroline Lee knocked it out of the park with this one. I was so looking forward to this book and I did not expect Lara! She was so well written and feisty!! A perfect foil for Alistair. The book was light, funny, heartwarming, and romantic with a little 🔥. Everything you could ask for from this series. Well worth the read!
I was provided an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.
I discover more with each book in this series that I just love me some naughty Scots! Lara was a woman who knew without a doubt what she wanted, and I loved how she went about getting our poor hero Alistair to acquiesce. He definitely was a quick study at how to not be quite so uptight! Bawdy, funny, and definitely irreverent, I am just so taken with these fun stories! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author, and was under no obligation to write a review.
I was looking forward to Alistairs story and was so excited to see him and Lara get together. He was seen in previous books never having fun or doing anything but working for the clan. Lara is here to show him that he is allowed to take the time for himself too. This series keeps me engaged from cover to cover and as soon as I finish one book I'm mad I have to wait for the next, it was no different with this one. I desperately want an Oliphant bastard for myself
I needed these books. They had me laughing till my sides ached and my face hurt. Oh and hubs kept looking at me like I'd lost my mind.
I can't wait for Keirgans book and what about poor Nessa? Can't she get out of the curse of the Henry's? I'll have to find out.
Oh and I'm going to have to go back and read them all again because I'm curious about taking a count of the saint's body parts that are mentioned throughout each book. Had me rolling off my chair with the parts Alistair mentioned.
This has to be one of the best series of books I’ve read. I can’t believe how bloody hard I laughed thru each and every book. Every character is so fully developed, down to the children..it’s as if you are there… and the individual love stories are so sweet. These books sure have reminded me of my husband when I married him 33 years ago…. The laughter… we should all have that!
This review covers all eight books. This series is about a riot of brothers who tell ancient jokes and rib each other unmercifully and would defend each other into death. I love how each brother has their own saint to swear by, as well as Father Ambrose's unique take on Scripture. They made me laugh, and these days, it's tough to find things that can do that. Enjoy!
I am really enjoying this series. I've enjoyed reading each brother's story.
Alistair is the one who didn't have time to find a wife since he was always busy with clan business. Lara has been in love with Alistair for years but he doesn't realize it. The two are thrown together to plan the laird's birthday party. I enjoyed watching Alistair start to relax.
I enjoyed this romance but it felt very rushed. Lara immediately starts to seduce Alistair, like from chapter 1. And the best friend’s sister trope isn’t a thing if the best friend is barely even mentioned in the book. Also, it’s really annoying that only one of the books in this series takes place off Oliphant lands. Where’s the adventure?
Alistar and Lara. Lara has loved Alistar since she was a girl. He has always looked at her as just his sister's best friend. I loved that Lara took the initiative and showed Alistar how to relax and what he was missing. I enjoyed this book. Miss Lee had me laughing out loud several times.
