4/5 ⭐ Pleasant surprise!

It is amazing to be able to met new authors, even more if their writing style is as exquisited as Lee Colgin's ♥️ She writes her novel and takes her pleasure in the process, she also cuddle her characters with pure affection and this tenderness stretches toward the readers. Hence, my four stars 🌟

Beneath the Opal Arc is the first instalment on Immortal Jewels' series and tells the love story ♥️ of Remy—a powerful spellcaster who tries to save the world by casting a powerful arc which works as a barrier to stop a war between werewolves 🐺 and witches 🧙—and Laurence—a lonely vampire who is fascinated by the courage of the vulnerable wizard. Vampires 🧛 are sided with werewolves due to tactical themes, but Laurence follows his heart and saves the young boy from a vicious werewolf, ensures he gets treatment and protects him from vengeful witches—headed by Emmeline—who want to destroy the arc to continue the war.

Positives:
✔️ Beatifuly written ♥️ What an amazing work of art! I could write the whole review adding wonderful quotes by Lee Colgin 💜 Such a talented writer!

“The vampire was a generous lover, playing with his body like an instrument, each note higher than the last” 🎵

This is so subtle and delicate ♥️ It flows like the music itself 🌬️

“Sweet like the scent of roses on the breeze and more addicting than the opium of a poppy flower, Remy's blood filled a need so primal Laurence burned for more”  🌹 🌺

✔️ Endearing characters 🥰 Not only the main characters, we also have the gorgeous vampire called Livia and the adorable bookseller Clara. Remy's granny, Evanora, is remarkable by her tender moments with her grandson.
Remy  🌝💛 What can I say about this little marshmallow? Better, let's allow Laurence to describe him:

“Petite and handsome with lovely, expressive features. Sultry, sweet voice pleading for help like honey dripping off the comb” 🍯

Remy is naïve and cute but totally reckless because off his straightforward nature. He also takes what he wants when he wants to do it 💅🏼—mainly on his relationship with our hotty vampire— and he hasn't hesitate to protect his loved ones 💜 Such a gentleman! Clara has something to tell about this, haha
Laurence 🌚🖤 At first, he is loathed to think about Remy as a potential lover because of his youth, but he could not deny his feelings and falls in love with the little witch. He does everything within his reach to achive Remy's goals: fighting a pack of angry werewolves or sexist townies. He is the perfect knight-errant!

Negatives:
Lack of depth on some characters 🤡 Best character development award is winned by the main characters, but I needed to know more about Livia, Clara, Emmeline or Valeri 😈 The latter has his own novelAcross the Sapphire Sea—and I can afford it because I understand that he will be developed later, but Emmeline is the main villain here and it is said nothing of her until the end 😒 I've not felt solid reasons for her to start a war 🥴

In short, this book has been a good read, filled by magic and fantastic beasts 👻 I can't wait to read more book written by this author ♥️

I stumbled upon this book and this "new to me" author on my "Discover" page in my Kindle app and I couldn't be happier that I gave this book a try. Don't you just love it when you try your luck with a book and it turns out to be good? I know I do!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this story about a war between fantasy creatures and one brave young witch who decided to do something to bring an end to it (even at the cost to his own life). I had originally planned to just peek in to read the first chapter but found myself stuck because of how well it was going. I simply could not put the book down till I was done with it; imperfections and all.

Fortunately for me, it is book one of a series so I can look forward to more books from this world and I for one, can't wait!

A Joyfully Jay review.

4 stars

Beneath the Opal Arc is an interesting mix of paranormal and fantasy. We have a world with vampires, werewolves, and witches, but the setting very much feels like a traditional historical fantasy. I found this made for some engaging world building and Colgin does a nice job showcasing these three different supernatural groups. The witches and vampires get the most focus and I found the witches, in particular, to be an interesting group. As the story develops, we get plenty of background on the conflict between the wolves and witches, as well as the larger world in general.

In addition, this book has a nice road trip feel, which is a favorite trope of mine. I enjoyed seeing Remy and Lawrence get to know one another and seeing Lawrence soften in the face of Remy’s sunny personality and constant questions. It gave a chance to really feel the men getting to know one another and made their ultimate connection feel believable at the end.

This book surprised me and definitely captured all the fantasy aspects that I love, have to admit to enjoying the world building and magic more then the romance.

I did adore Laurence and Remys relationship growth, as they learn about each other and find comfort together. They're both stunning characters on their own too, with their povs and thoughts.

While instant attraction, the love aspect seemed rather sudden in final part with realizations between them. Still really sweet though, only wish had been longer to have explored more of that outside of the main plot.

The magic is interesting from the start and discussion of war between the witches, wolves and vampires. Fun world building as comes to life on page while they journey together with stops along the way.

I loved the bookshop and finding friendships, also Remys grandmother who was stunning and just made me smile. There are some villains too of course, plenty of entertaining action scenes.

The last part picked up the pace to an extreme, seemed a little rushed and i would have loved too of seen more of a battle. Not sure on some choices in the final, although still leads to a happy ending for these two and towards the next books adventure.

Overall a great read and gave me all the fantasy feels that I appreciate so much 💕

I'm not sure if this is a "just ok" book or a good book, but even though I did enjoy reading it, it's not the kind of book I'd happily recommend to any passersby who asks me what they might like. The premise is interesting, if a bit vague in the worldbuilding details (like why the war, why the werewolves, what do the witches think, etc). I was also not that stoked by the conclusion. It's a convenient solution for many possible questions that could arise in "how the relationship would work", but the fact that it got to that point made me wonder if Remy was actually necessary for the witches or just convenient.
I'm interested enough to go for book two, though what little we saw of the coming protagonists doesn't paint them in any kind of flattering light.

EDIT: book 2 is not about the same couple. Though Remy and Laurence appear throughout the book. The main MCs are a different couple as I have recently been given a copy. You know what they say about those who assume I guess.

First off, I did not know this was going to be a series following the same couple. As I got closer to the end I realized there was no way all the loose ends were going to be tied up in 10% left. So if you're one to hold off until a series is finished just know there is still more to come.

I enjoyed the dynamic between Remy and Laurence. Remy was sweet and naïve, yet curious. Laurence was wary of this at first, yet he couldn't stop himself from starting to trust the young witch. There wasn't a lot of steam. The two spent the majority of this book on the run and getting to know one another. Witches and Vampires were at war after all. It wouldn't be so easy to trust the supposed enemy right off the bat.

Speaking of the war, the world building was interesting. It seems witches and werewolves had been engaged in war, and the vampires had made a decision to side with the werewolves. It proved to be a smart decision as Remy explained the plans the witches had for everyone. His caring heart just couldn't be apart of a sinister plan. Though Remy was one of the most powerful witches, strange enough being born male, he had no desire to lead or cause chaos. He just wanted to be left alone to live his life in peace. Unfortunately, that was never going to happen being in the clan of witches he belonged to.

Though the book culminates in an epic battle, there is still more left to do. The setting has been set for book 2 and there is also a blurb for it as well. It looks to be interesting as well. I enjoyed Remy and Laurence enough to want more of the couple, but I am also curious about their companions and the role they will play. 3.75 stars

Lee Colgin is a new author for me and I have to say that the writing was solid and the premise good but I'm sorry to say unrealised.

This is a series even though there's nothing to indicate it before starting the story. We are dropped into it with no world building nor a time frame.

When it came to time frame the only indication at what time period we are was at 17% when Remy and Laurence were in a graveyard: "...Remy peered at the ancient gravestones, the dates so faded he could barely read them. He made out 1036, nearly 400 hundred years prior..." and a bit from the prose that to me was more Georgian/Victorian than Middle Ages although at times in dialogue it was contemporary: "...Don't worry, it's larger than it looks," said Laurence, reading his mind. "That's what they all say." Remy smirked...". Seriously I won't be expecting to hear that in any era before 1900.

As far as world building goes anyone that hasn't read the book knows as much as I do. Is it a fictional world? A parallel world? Another planet? Narnia? Who knows. Where did vampires and werewolves came from? The only info was that usually magic goes from grandmother to granddaughter and rarely to a male and that was given because Remy is a male witch.

Now as far as the story goes I'm sorry but it was too generic and obscure. We spend chapters and chapters, pages and pages of Remy and Laurence being on the road with nothing really happening and the same things being repeated. Dry, almost not existing adventure with little excitement of a very common variety.

Very small sparks of chemistry between Remy and Laurence that fizzled out about half way through the book. And the battle at the end between the witches was lackluster.

It took me 5 days to finish this, a lot of willpower to get back to reading it and really I skimmed the last 2 chapters.

I received an ARC from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest review.

This was so good. I loved Remy & Laurence. There is a war between the witches & werewolves and the vampires have sided with the wolves. Remy doesn't agree with the war & when the witches planned on using him to wipe them off the face of the earth, Remy doesn't go along with it & effectively puts an end to the war. When he is hurt while erecting the arc, Laurence saves him and in doing so becomes enemy number one with the wolves. When they seek protection from the vampire counsel, the witches come looking for Remy to force him to do what he is against doing. The battle the ensures, is rather bloody & kept me on the edge of my seat. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

Dnf at 20% ... still no clue what or why in the storyline ... dialog is repetitive and very superficial...Remi apparently an extremely strong witch who wields his power with no problem, stronger than anyone he knows yet he is afraid of everything...
I had hopes for this one based on the blurb but not delivered for me ...

The good
+ Remy's honesty
+ Laurence's subconscious caretaking
+ Laurence carrying Remy

The neutral
o I know they weren't really friends yet back then, but Laurence basically told Remy that in order to stay safe, he should stop being himself. Harsh

The bad
- Laurence played with Remy's feelings. He knew Remy had very deep feelings for him, and Laurence treated their relationship like something casual with an end date. That was completely unfair to Remy
- When they were visiting Livia, Remy . Later, when Laurence spoke to him about it, Laurence blamed Remy for acting when nothing had happened. What the hell? Laurence's inner dialogue even said I would not hurt you like that, which is utter bullshit, because he did. Making Remy feel bad for Laurence's actions is a dick move
- Laurence had very strong feelings about free will due to past trauma. Everytime something came up that could impact his free will, he became incredibly wary and even scared. Yet when Laurence was at his most scared and vulnerable, Remy . Remy was forgiven without a thought, which made no sense at all
- Laurence's trauma was caused by . The way Remy treated this subject was appalling. Why would he ever agree to , when he knew about Laurence's past?
- The next book will be about , whose only appearance in this book consisted of . Needless to say, I won't read it

In the beginning of their companionship, Laurence was the one making a mess of things. Once they were more settled, Remy became callous and egotistical. I don't think these men are made to have a lasting relationship together. I also hated the introduction of the main character and the setup for the next book, so I won't be reading that either. I would not recommend this.

Think of a paranormal Indiana Jones film and you will have a good idea of what to expect from this book.

We have Vampires, witches, and werewolves. Witches and werewolves are at war.

Remmy is a young very powerful witch, that after finding out he was about to be used to wipe out All creatures by the leaders of the witches. He uses his magical powers to place an arc between the realms of the witches and earth.

Laurence is A Vampire messenger that witnesses Remy’s spell being placed. When the werewolves threaten to kill Remy, Laurence vows to protect the young witch, and they start a long journey full of mistrust of each other at first. But they begin to trust one another as they journey towards Laurence’s hometown.

The chemistry between them is strong and I loved the banter. But what I liked most is that although Laurence is protecting Remy. Remy is by no means a weakling as in so many stories like this one.

The characters come to life with the authors rich descriptions of their personalities. The secondary characters are also well defined and play important parts in the story and not just there to make up the numbers.

The story world is excellent, and I felt like I was on the journey through the woods and marshes with them.

Standing tall, arms reaching toward the stars, the witch left himself open to attack. Light sparked from his palms, illuminating the night sky. An enormous arc of energy formed from thin air, stretching over the forest’s dense canopy and beyond the horizon.

Now that is how a book needs to begin for me – hooked with the first paragraph!

After witch Remy created an arc to end the war between werewolves, vampires and witches, Lawrence rescues him from being attacked himself. Since the werewolves do not believe that Remy had good intentions with the arc, vampire Lawrence wants to take him to his own kind for protection.

Most of the story is traveling at night with a few battles, and Remy and Lawrence getting to know each other. Misunderstandings were resolved quickly, nobody did anything TSTL, the story flow felt good if not almost a bit slow in places.

The story ends nicely wrapped up with just enough setup to send the heroes on their next adventure in the next book of the series. Note: the next book is about a different couple.

I liked it enough to pick up book 2 for further adventures.

Humor: 3 stars
General writing style: 4 stars
Story line idea: 4 stars
Story line execution: 3 stars
Plot: 3 stars
Annoy factors: timeline was off (daytime/nighttime) 3 stars
R-rated content: a couple of descriptive scenes

Main protagonists: Remy, 25, witch; Lawrence, vampire (turned at ~40)

What a magical start to a series!
I have to say I almost passed this one up the blurb just does not do the story justice IMO

Remy (a witch) and Laurence (a vampire) are the main characters in this fast-paced action-packed adventure.
We open with Remy casting a spell that leaves him open for attack. Laurence who by all definitions is the enemy witnesses the wonder that Remy has created. Seeing something so rare and precious so vulnerable? Well, it needs to be protected, and who better than him?
And let the mayhem unfold!

This is a slow burn romance but only in the physical sense. The chemistry between these two is almost instantaneous, well once Remy regains his wits, but Laurence is a bit more pragmatic(?) about the approach. Remy's character is almost childlike in his awe at all the new things he is exposed to. There is a vulnerability to him that is endearing while at the same time he has a strength that isn't born of vanity (he is a rarity but you will have to read to find out why) but of a true need to protect and cause no harm.
I saw what Laurence saw in that magical moment, why he chose to save him.
Laurence was the practical of the two. His past (again something that you will find in the story, I know quite evil of me) has made him a bit overprotective of those he cares for, even if he isn't ready to admit his feelings. There is a scene where Remy calls him out for being a tad overprotective, it had me belly laughing.

This is full of great characters, not only the main but the secondary who play very significant roles. We meet a few who I think will play major roles in future episodes. Do I wish we had gotten more on them? Yes. But it is not a secret that I am very greedy that way. The world-building is vivid and creative with multiple regions - vamps, witches, wolves, and humans - some even integrate a bit (how this whole mess started). Again, you know it, I wish we had gotten some more background but maybe not. I know confusing either you want it or you don't. I had no trouble picturing the landscape or the people it felt to be a bit more like the old west a bit antiquated not quite modernized. This ends with a HEA for our couple and the plot for the next episode as well as a couple of possible twists to come.
I am looking forward to seeing how certain "hinted" at events unfold and how the characters develop.
Not overly angsty - Not too far fetched to fall into - Full of laughter, friendship, and feel-good moments - A believable romantic connection between the MC's - Lots of action - A great start

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and I have chosen to leave an hones review.

In this well developed world, The Witches and Werewolves are at War, The Vampires wanting the war to end, ally with the werewolves. Remy is a powerful male witch who can extend the range of any witch to anywhere in the world. The leading faction of the Witches wants him to extend one witches poison to kill everything in the werewolves territory. Refusing to do that Remy, casts a barrier (the opal arc of the title) to stop the witches advance until they can take down the barrier. As He casts the Barrier one wolf tries to prevent the casting thinking it an attack. Laurence the Ambassador of the vampires to this pack of Werewolves is just a little to slow to prevent the attack but deflects it enough so it isn't immediately lethal.

Laurence becomes Remy's protector/jailor and they hurry to Laurence's home to get Remy sanctuary from the witches who think he is a traitor. While getting the promise of sanctuary Remy agrees to help laurence's sire, Valeri on a Quest to save Mahu, the eldest vampire from the aging sickness. When the Witches attack during the day when the vampires can't defend themselves much less protect Remy. He goes out to help the local witches defend the castle. In defeating the main witch, Remy is gravely injured and Laurence has to turn him. Remy thinks he lost his magic but it now only works when Remy and Laurence work together. but because Laurence is too weak to finish the turn by himself, Mahu intervenes and lets Laurence feed from him strengthening both
Remy and Laurence.

Looking forward to the next book in the Series, detailing the quest of Valeri to save/heal Mahu of the aging sickness.

My first exposure to the author was during the festive season just past with a nicely sweet M-M paranormal novella A Bridge to Love. Based on that - I thought I'd give a longer paranormal a go. At best - this was a very lite action paranormal with just enough world building and socio-political background to keep me reading. And despite the threat of an avenging witch lynching contingent in hot pursuit of Remy raised very early on, the threat did not actually eventuate until almost near the end, with the focus remained firmly on the drawn out M-M romance between a young witch and a more seasoned older vampire throughout.

I was not all that thrilled with Given the promise of more books in the series - such existing 'tensions/disparity' between Lawrence and Remy would have better served to prolong my reading anticipation/wonder. As such - this was 2.5 star read (rounded up to 3 in the end largely due to the late introduction of much more interesting secondary characters from amongst the vampire collective).

This adventurous paranormal MM romance is somewhat different to the other paranormal MM romances that I have read but I promise you that it is definitely worth reading. The plot is well-written & interesting to read with vivid scene descriptions. The characters are fairly well-developed individuals that are portrayed as sympathetic, protective heroes with good chemistry between them & there is good support from the secondary characters.
There is: a powerful young male witch (Remy), a jaded male vampire (Laurence), werewolves, good witches, rogue witches, vampires, adventure, action, intrigue, suspense, drama, magic, attractions, war, enemies, danger, threats, magical battles, injuries, protectiveness, manipulations, confrontations, complications, decisions, unexpected assistance, comradery, some steam & a HFN. I look forward to the next book in this series with great anticipation.

Vampires with a twist

This is not your regular vampire book. It’s full of surprises, twists and loops that you won’t expect. It also features a fantastic cast of characters that I am craving to learn more about. Remy is truly amazing. He and his actions astonished and impressed me. Laurence is a lucky, lucky vampire and one who I would want next to me in a fight or to cuddle. “You are...interesting in a world I’ve found dull for a very long time.” One thing I know for sure: neither Laurence nor Remy will lack for excitement and they’re just getting started. Full of action, magic, and crafty characters, Remy and Laurence will be forever entangled in my heart.

I am sooooo glad I found this book (and this author!). I absolutely adored all the characters, especially Remy, he's so much fun and I loved how much of a sunshine character he is. Laurence is his grumpy, vampire counterpart, who is also wonderful. I fell in love with both of them almost immediately, but I also thoroughly enjoyed all the side characters. They are all well-drawn, 3-d characters in their own right. This book started in exactly the right place and the pacing flowed on well from there with both a sense of urgency but it also took time during Remy and Laurence's journey for slower and softer moments. The slow burn is delicious and I completely believe in the love between Remy and Laurence and I was thrilled with how the story reached its conclusion, it really worked for me. I know these two have a wonderful future in front of them. The writing is excellent, the storytelling great, and I can't recommend this book enough. I'm very much looking forward to reading more by this amazing author!

Well, I finished reading it, so it was interesting enough, though I did skim that last scene because I knew how it'd go, which is boring. I think in a few more years of practice, this author might become good.

Issues:
The novel is a bit thin in worldbuilding. The bad guys are flat caricatures, part of why the big battle lacks tension. The resolution is... Well. If the author's not new at writing, then she isn't getting the feedback she needs to excel at writing great fantasy. New authors have trouble doing terrible things to their main characters, which diminishes and even obliterates tension. She managed some relationship tension, but not much more.

Quibbles:
I hated the grandmother's affectionate term for Remy every time I saw it, because it felt so out of place in this world. As is often the case these days, the last third of the book got less editing attention. The sex scenes were uninspiringly standard.

In a world where the Witches are steeped in a genocidal war against the Werewolves, a powerful male witch Remy puts up a poweful magical barrier, the Opal Arc, in an attempt to halt the madness. A witness, the roguish vampire Lawrence is touched by Remy's bravery and sets about protecting him from both Witch and Wolf. Their journey to seek safe haven with the Vampires is filled with peril and romance. As Remy and Lawrence overcome their preconceived notions of each other, they find trust, love and companionship instead. A good read.

Lee Colgin is a new to me author, this is the first book of hers that I've read, and it won't be the last! It was an exciting fantasy book, filled with witches, werewolves and vampires, epic battles, a road trip and it felt like a historical, almost medieval in execution. The romance was nice enough, but the plot and worldbuilding were more impressive. This is the first book in a series, so I will for sure check out the rest of the series.

4 adventurous and steamy stars. ***(Mild spoilers!)***

A young, powerful male witch is saved by a young-ish male vampire...and begins the journey of their lives that will alter the world of werewolveus, vampires, witches and humans alike.

Remegius (Remy), near death after using his powerful magic to create a protective shield between the four groups to prevent an all out war, is rescued by Laurence, a vampire with hidden desires for Remy.

What follows in a heartwarming and danger-filled adventure with multiple plotlines, each one flowing smoothly between the other. With help from all groups, Remy and Laurence outmaneuver multiple attempts on their lives as they travel many miles to seek the protection of The Twelve, a group of high ranking vampires, for Remy. By forming the Arch, he has become an enemy of his Elders, who seek to kill him for his betrayal.

The world-building is remarkably visual, the dialogue befitting the time period in which the story occurs (much to my delight!) and the heat level rises with a smooth progression that ties in wonderfully with the flow of the tale. (An added bonus: NO editing errors!!)

This book begins a series of four books with a magnificent flourish. I intend on reading the entire series.

What a fun and fast-paced read!

From beginning to end, you'll enjoy the witch and vampire MCs. Both Remy and Laurence, are an adorable couple with the perfect amount of chemistry between them.

The world building was creative and easy to follow.

In Beneath the Opal Arc, Colgin has created a vibrant world in which werewolves, power-hungry witches, and a vampire castle filled with Byzantine intrigues form the backdrop for the adventures of our protagonists, Remy and Laurence. Remy is a young witch with incredible power, and, at least from his leaders’ perspective, an inconvenient conscience. Laurence is a vampire, jaded by his own tragic past and years of service to the vampire ruling class. When Remy defects in order to prevent genocide, Laurence saves him, and their mad dash toward saftey and eventually peace begins.

There’s so much to like about this novel. The supernatural factions are interesting, their world immersively drawn. There are some fantastic supporting characters (I’m looking at you, Lady Clara). And of course Remy and Laurence are complex, deeply sympathetic heroes who wind up being perfect for each other. Laurence is kind and protective underneath his veneer of abstraction. Remy is intelligent, sweetly sarcastic, and more than a match for everything from rogue witches to a vampire who doesn’t think he’s quite worthy of someone like Remy. Their relationship builds beautifully, with deep emotional as well as physical connection. The plot is engrossing, and the ending sets us up for the next adventure, this one dealing with a monster from Laurence’s past. I personally cannot wait.

I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I liked the premise and the 'good' characters but the magic system, at least as I 'understood' it, didn't make any sense, the writing style felt really awkward to me (maybe more rounds of copy-/ editing would have helped?) and the pacing had some serious hang ups. There were some nice emotional beats here but many got a bit lost because I struggled to orient myself within the temporal structure of this story and some events that seemed important to me were brushed over by abrupt switches in perspective. Aside from that, I really wish that the villains would have had more depth but they seem like cardboard cutouts that are evil 'just because.'

Still, all in all not a terrible book but also not one I'll be rereading, and from what I learned about Valeri in this book, I doubt I'll be reading the sequel that is told from Valeri and Elias's perspectives...
