UPDATE (3 months later) I've decided to increase my rating given how much I still think about the uniqueness of this book. And in context of all the doo doo I've read this year, this is MUCH better than a 3 star.

UPDATE The author reached out to me via IG (shameless plug @girlwiththepinkskimask) to discuss the plot holes I mentioned. LOVE when authors are open to feedback. He answered my questions thoroughly and helped me better understand the scope of Jodie's powers. Thanks so much, Rudys! Looking forward to his next book :)

Writing: 4/5 | Plot: 4/5 | Ending: idk 3.5/5

THE PLOT

Ethan Page seems like the luckiest man on earth, but when learns his wife has been using her time travel powers to make his life so carefree, it sends him into a tailspin.

MY OPINION

I had a sneaking suspicion this book would have paranormal elements, but I couldn't find any reviews outright stating this. I decided YOLO, even though I don't really like the paranormal, and... I think I'm glad I did? I certainly enjoyed the themes explored in this book, and the questions it made me ask myself: what would I actually do if I could turn back time? Is pain inevitable no matter what path you take? It was a thinker.

I liked the writing enough. You know I stay vibing with my European authors. It was well-paced. Not to be pretentious but, you can tell this is written by a European... the humor is very particular. It may seem odd, but it's on brand.

I found it difficult to make sense of Jodie's power—perhaps this is just my own dummy behavior? Like how old was this chick if she kept going back again and again and again? And sometimes when she could've used her power, she didn't? But she seemed to know everything? Idk... The plot holes were widening at the end.

Lastly, Ethan is a big ole bish. I did NOT like him, nor did I understand his emotions. I sympathized with Jodie, especially given her childhood. She was going to bat for a mans who couldn't pull out of a driveway. Sorry Ethan, but I'm Team Jodie.

All in all, and interesting read. It reminded me of the movie About Time, but more of a psychological deep dive. The author does a good job at answering any doubts, like, why wasn't Jodie saving the whole damn world with this power??? I appreciated him addressing those "challenges" to the story. And my parting thought is this would make a FIRE FLAME movie.

PROS AND CONS

Pros: thought-provoking plot, well-paced, funny at times

Cons: Ethan... total ungrateful bum. Some plot holes at the end.

When you try to take the pain away from the people you want to protect, to spare them from harm, are you really saving them? But what about your pain? Your guilt?

An extraordinary read. I’d have to agree with all the positive reviews because this book literally floored me. At first, I didn’t know what was going on. The relationship between the characters was weird and there were a LOT of secrets that will be revealed in the most unconventional way.

Can’t say much about the premise because I wanna keep you guessing. I can only tell you that this is an out of the ordinary tale of desperate love, friendship and loss.

Waiting for this author’s next book.

4 ✨ One of a kind and absolutely amazing, but I had to read it with an open mindset to fully appreciate the story.

1 ⭐️ for that cover photo! I was drawn in by the cover but stayed for the story.

I suggest you Go into this one blind! 😅

A couple of hours later, I still feel sad that C’s life was derailed because they entertained the wrong love interest. Such a gem! 💔 Fave character!!

I really do not know how to adequately describe this novel in detail without adding spoilers - and I won't do that.

The novel opens with the married life of Jodie and Ethan, a couple living in domestic and professional bliss, that seems to have it all, with an envied idyllic, story-book life and a circle of wonderful friends - then things take a turn south.

After a domestic argument, Jodie flees and in hiding from Ethan reveals all is not perfect in paradise, and in Ethan's search for Jodie, secrets start to be revealed indicating perceptions are not always reality.

Beyond this, the less known about the novel the better, with a strong suggestion potential readers avoid in-depth reviews.

The last thing I will add is this has been one of the most creative and surprising novels I have read in some time.

Highly recommended.

Undecided if I liked this book or not. The story turned around 1/3 way through and totally changed the trajectory. I think because it was so fantastical a theme and not true to life is why I struggled but I did find it interesting to see where it ended. Not a thriller but definitely a magical mystery tour of fiction.

I wish I could give this fantastic book more than five stars as it was so brilliant. When I started it I was a little confused by the first chapter but, after I’d read more I realised what was happening and then from that point I just couldn’t stop reading it. This book grabbed me with its different type of story. It had all the twists and turns that I enjoy in a book and the ending was brilliant. I really hope that this author writes more as I’ll definitely read more if they are anything like this one.

Not enough people are talking about this book. Forget the freaky cover, this narrative is phenomenal and is up there in my top reads for this year. Easy decision. A debut novel from Lithuanian writer, Rudys, I am really excited to see what comes next.

I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of this book, and even though I was a little sceptical at first - this is the Lithuanian author's first book - I was blown away.

This is not an ordinary thriller, where someone is trying to uncover some sort of mystery. This is so much more. With two main characters, it's about a husband who tries to understand who his wife truly is; about the nature of their relationship, and whether control is healthy or desirable at all. Both are flawed, and as I read the character I supported changed - all the way to the epilogue.

I was left staring at the wall for a good 20 minutes, trying to understand who Jodie really is. Let me tell you, this book really challenges your morality. I can only hope more people would read this, so I could talk it over with them!

What a page turner!! I admit I was a bit sceptical when I picked this book, but I ended up reading it all in a few days (and I am a slow reader). I only had this eagerness to see where the story was going when I first read the Da Vinci Code. 😊 I kept on guessing where the story would go, and I always guessed wrong, which kept me hooked right until the end! I highly recommend this book!

If you ever fancy a read with a weird relationship between a couple - here's a book for you!

It's got passionate scenes, sweet dialogues, naivety, 'what the hell just happened' moments and much more.

I loved it, and you will love it too! And this curse is often called 'a great read'. ENJOY!

I'm probably the only person who really didn't like this book.

I don't want to say much about the story because anything I would say would involve spoilers. I read many reviews and the majority remarked how it was a thrilling page turner and readers couldn't put it down. I was just the opposite, I couldn't wait for it to end. Maybe I'm too much of a realist but this book was too far fetched for me. I also spent my career in mental health and I'm telling anyone who is reading this right now, even if you have a great imagination, it is still somewhat ridiculous. I also didn't particularly like the characters in the book, they felt very made up and not real at all. And then the ending, or maybe I should say “ what ending? “ Oh well, on to another much better book and I can't wait!!!

A thought-provoking sci-fi/weird thriller.

Dark, twisty and philosophical.

Going by the atypical cover, I didn't really expect much going into it. By the same token, it also made me interested in reading it.

It kept my attention during the days I read it. After a shocking incident, Ethan Page attempts to locate his wife. His perfect wife has a disturbing power over him. So begins his journey to figure out who she truly was. There are some supernatural elements.

To say anymore would reveal spoilers.

The author is a great story-teller who creates a dreary, unpredictable atmosphere which more mainstream thrillers struggle with. In the London/Edinburgh centric world of the novel, nothing is certain any more as soon as the incident in the kitchen occurs. As a reader, I was invested enough in the characters to want to find out what would happen next.

Some of the characters interactions were a bit same-y though. But in general, there was a sense of realism to most of the scenes which didn't spoil immersion.

I enjoyed reading about most of the characters. I felt like some had a worse deal (Dr Charlotte Leigh and Theo) than others. Also, enjoyed the humour in this novel too.

This novel explores the consequences of individuals actions and how it affects the people around them. Everything has a ripple effect. You can't change people unless they want to change themselves. So, choose the right people in your life.

If you enjoy thrillers that have a supernatural/weird angle or explore complicated relationship dynamics, My Wife Jodie should satisfy.

Now, this was a surprise read!
I was a beta reader for this book.

In the beginning, the author mentioned he has visual dyslexia so I didn't expect much.

Progue was a bit random and I was like ok...
Chapter 1 was quite strange/slow, not much happening and at one point I even laughed because I thought Author made a huge continuity mistake (regarding Ethan's skiing accident) but I keep on reading. (my rule is to read at least 3 chapters)

And then chapter 2 hit me and I was like WHHAAT? And then I wasn't been able to stop. There were no continuity mistakes, and so cleverly written too!

This really reminded me of Behind her eyes type of vibe expect the plot twist actually make more sense and I couldn't find any plot holes.

Such a satisfying read!

My Review

Ethan and Jodie have been married a long time, no kids but everything in their life is great. When Jodie has a breakdown and rushes off, telling their friends lies Ethan is puzzled, what happened? As Ethan tries to track down his wife he starts to uncover things that makes him question what he really knows about Jodie and their life. Then another bombshells drops, Jodie has a power and once Ethan learns of it he starts to question even more. When you open the closet and skeletons fall out you cannot reclose that door and now life as Ethan and Jodie know it will never be the same.

Oooh guys, the cover pulled me in, with the blurb, it looks good/freaky/eerie and I wasn't sure where the book was going to go. Once, along with Ethan, you discover Jodie's secrets/power everything changes, like Ethan you question what you would do, what has been done, what could be done.

The book actually gives a really good look at what can happen if you have everything you want, how being good or good intentions do/can indeed pave the pathway to hell,. It cleverly weaves in moral questions whilst looking at relationships, friendships, infidelity, love, lies, death, loss and the old actions and consequences.

It is a very different kind of book, not what I was expecting at all and it took me a wee bit to settle to. The chapters jumped a wee bit and at one point I was like what how in the? Is this a printing error but as you read on things become clear.

It is actually pretty clever in parts and well done, domestic, relationships with a stab of what if with a sprinkle of chaos/power/ability. If you are looking for something a bit different, look no further, I will be keeping a wee eye out for Rudy's next offering, 4/5 for me this time.

The author gave me an advance reader copy for an honest review.

4.5! Everything was brilliant, the only thing which took me by surprise was the supernatural twist in chapter 10. I normally don't read supernatural thriller so I felt at the moment a bit betrayed by the author, however, because the twist came early in the book I had time to get back to it and really care about the characters.

There was a lot to think about at the end of the book.

Just to clarify, the twist wasn't bad and made a lot of sense when it was revealed. I just wished I would have known there is a supernaturalism in this book before I started to read it.

There is a very short synopsis for this book, but combined with the cover image, it provides a very intriguing glimpse into the story. It caught my attention and took me on a route that I really never expected to be on.

Ethan and Jodie Page, a great couple, good life, a nice house, plenty of money and get along wonderfully. That is until the smallest and least significant thing happens.

This is going to be such a hard one to review as I am not able to give the main crux or twist of this story away. It is however a brilliant one. I did initially have my misgivings about it when it came up in the story, but I went with it and my goodness did the author do a great job with this.

The synopsis does suggest that there is some sort of control over the life the Page's lives. It isn't until further on in the story that you begin to fully realise the full extent and also how it impacts their marriage. The author explores how a marriage can be controlled and in this one, it is not the usual way. Bringing in a sense of mistrust and cajoling you can see why things start to deteriorate.

In some ways, this is an exploration into marriages, relationships, manipulation, trying to do the right thing, believing in people but eventually, it does come down to the level of trust. It definitely has a psychological edge to it giving it a thriller and suspense feel.

This is a domestic thriller that has a huge twist, not the usual one and it took me by surprise. Vague review I know, but if you get the chance grab a copy of this if you are a fan of this type of genre. I adored this book and I would definitely recommend it.

Wow! Wow! Wow! Don't start reading this if you have anything else to do because once you pick it up, you won't be able to put it down! We startvwith the story of Ethan and Jodie - they have it all... or so it seems. They love each other, are financially secure, have a great group of friends... but one night Jodie gets upset. Really upset. Out of nowhere and it makes no sense. As Ethan tries to support her and find out what's wrong he starts finding things that suggest more is going on here than meets the eye. As the mystery unravels, it is a compelling and dark twist of events. Just how far would you go to protect the one you love?

This book is based on such a thought provoking and original idea. Its really well executed and short chapters from different perspectives make it really difficult to put down. This book is different, dark but grabs you and pulls you in. I couldn't put it down. The cover art is so creepy but really captures the essence of the book. This is brilliant!

I was one of the Beta Readers of this book!

Maybe my opinion is a bit biased because I had a rare opportunity to talk it through with the author, but damn, there are so many details I haven't picked up which was only pointed out by the author himself. It made this book even better. However, at the same time, I felt sad that the majority of readers are probably not going to pick up on those small little things! :(

I didn't see the ending coming and it completely took me by surprise (in a good way) :)

Anyway, I read it on Google Docs, but I will be purshesing physical as I know there are few small surprises included which is not going to be available on kindle or audio books. :o

I was one of the lucky advance copy readers for this new Author.

Oh man. after chapter 10 I had no idea was this book was going. The way it gradually escalated was terrific. I really felt Ethan's pain throughout the book even though the ending made me second doubt myself.

After I finished reading I read the blurb again and concluded it doesn't give this book the justice it deserves, but at the same time, I know why an author might have done it. Not knowing what the book is about is in a way more exciting.

RECOMMEND RECOMMEND!

4.5 Stars!!!!
Wish goodreads did a half!!
This was such a different unique story that I’ve not read before. It’s fast paced, great writing and easy to read. I could read pages in this book so easily.
I was gripped through but mostly by half way, I didn’t want to put it down. The ending and wrap up let it down in my opinion, and it was predictable.
Would highly recommend!!

Loved this book, barely put it down once I started. It has mystery suspense and a really unique storyline that's so refreshing compared to the usual thriller story that gets old after a while.

A really unique first person view and some satisfying reveals early on to keep you invested.

The story follows Ethan Page. A man living his best life, Ethan is a successful lawyer, married to a beautiful artist, living in a hip area of London, surrounded by friends. Ethan and wife Jodie take regular skiing holidays, and live with a certain amount of luxury, having won the lottery a few years back. Although a bad investment caused the pair to lose most of their money, the couple are happy and very lucky in their lives.

But the veneer of their charmed existence starts to crack when Ethan realises just how little of his life is actually his own, and how much he really owes to his wife.

An astonishing debut. I tore through this book in less than two days and I suspect I’ll be thinking about it for a very long time to come. The narrative is well-written and, although the writer mentions his dyslexia in his Author Biography, the writing is clear and free. One or two small errors just added to the author’s voice and startling individuality.

I especially enjoyed the dynamic between Ethan and Jodie, particularly in the early chapters. The good humoured mocking and bantering that come with long-term relationships can be very hard to convey without either party seeming mean, but V. A. Rudys has an extraordinary eye for detail and, even though neither of the main characters is really a hero, theyre written with such heart and understanding, I loved them anyway.

You must read this book.

Okay, so, I read tons of domestic thrillers. This is some next level sh*t.

I read this because I saw a top reviewer who IMO chronically underrates things was impressed by it. So they gave this (I think) 4 stars AND I hadn’t heard of it…woah. I think it also made me understand how others rate things. While I give it 4(.5) stars, I’ll never stop recommending it. This book is some next level sh*t. If you have interest in any 5 books that I liked then I recommend this for you.

^^this tells you literally nothing, but everything you need to know.

Where was the big surprise?

Reading the other reviews for this book made me anticipate a huge twist in the story. The storyline was made clear at the beginning and I can’t understand what the twist was.

Was the twist as simple as Ethan realising he’d overthought Jodie’s book writings..? And that he’d not understood properly what Jodie had previously said about TRYING to save Laura, but having to make a decision between that and saving Theo. That was made clear early on, so I don’t understand how this felt like a twist to other readers?

I felt like the writer kept going over the same points and made this book really long winded… I won’t be coming back to this book, nor will I be recommending it.
