Strider: Demon of Defeat
Butterfly: on his left hip
His curse: He has to win no matter the cost. If he does not win any kind of challenge, he will feel intense physical agony, extreme pain for days.

Kaia Skyhawk or Kaia the Disappointment: A Harpy
Supernatural ability: She is an immortal and very strong. Harpies are much stronger and much deadlier than Lords. Her extra personal strength comes from the control of fire.

Strider…. One word for him: WIN!
He is THE male with the biggest EGO. So proud of himself. Well, about everything he has accomplished.
He often congratulates himself for his supremacy:

He’d make an exception because of the extreme superiority of his talent. He was far better than “good.”

And he always wants to win:

Now, the pleasure that came with a win…sweet gods above. There was nothing like it, not even sex.

Or maybe this is just his demon talking who can never lose gracefully.

Win! Defeat giggled like a schoolgirl.

Win!
I know. I heard you the first time, asshole.

WIN!
Stupid Defeat.

Kaia is sister of Gwen, Taliyah and Bianka. They are the four badass harpy sisters whose lives have entwined with the lives of the Lords.

Kaia knows what she wants:

“No setups. I want Strider.”
“He’s no good for you.”
He’s perfect for me. “One, he doesn’t belong to another Harpy. Two, he isn’t psychotic. Well,” she added with a few seconds of afterthought, “he isn’t psychotic all of the time. And three, he’s…he’s my consort, I know it.”

Harpy Games are on the spot light. Many years ago when Kaia was young and naïve, she destroyed the reputation of her family at the games.
Now Kaia needs to show that she is not a Disappointment any more.
After he is challenged, Strider will help the Skyhawk team, will keep Kaia safe and will try to get an important artifact at the same time.

I loved Kaia and Strider together. Kaia is absolutely sure about her feelings and Strider resists his attraction to Kaia.

Another awesome addition to the series.Win!

Worth mentioning: This is the book where we met my favorite Lazarus for the first time.
He was handsome, she supposed. Each of his features appeared to be chiseled from stone. He had a blade of a nose, sharpened cheekbones, thin but red lips and a stubborn chin.
The cunning, The Cruel and Unusual, The Tampon Lazarus (the only son of Typhon and of a Gorgon) and his apparently future mate Cameo (although these two will not meet in the darkest surrender) will have their book as well: The Darkest Promise.

5 Harpy Games Stars

I was a little worried starting this read. In a past book Kaia slept with Paris and now wanted Strider as a Harpy version of a husband. I didn't like that Kaia had slept with one of Strider's friends. I didn't know how Gena Showalter was going to make me buy this relationship but I ended up loving Strider and Kaia. The harpy games were cool. I loved the harpy race. I laughed a lot reading this book. It was a fun change from the main story plot. I ended up loving Kaia and feeling sorry for all the times Strider hurt her feelings. I went into this read thinking I would be on Striders side of the whole you slept with my friend thing and ended up Team Kaia. I got annoyed that Strider didn't get over it already. I mean he was no saint.

The Harpies were crazy and kicked ass. I loved how they were so strong, sexy and sassy. I want more Harpy in these books. Kaia and Strider were a slow burn, but a good burn. When Strider finally pulled his head out of his ass he and Kaia were sweet couple. One of my favorites in the Lords series. Lazarus was intriguing. I was sad when I seen that he will get his own book. I don't know how that will work but I can't wait to see. Kaia's mom was a total bitch but I liked her in the end. Overall I really liked this read. I'm not looking forward to Paris' book. Of all the lords Paris is my least favorite.

The Darkest Surrender is the eighth installment of the Lords of the Underworld series, the story of Strider, Keeper of Defeat a.k.a. the Beautiful Moron and Kaia the Irritating Harpy Who Stole the Story of Strider.

I’m mad at Kaia because The Darkest Surrender is mainly about her. About her fatal, stupid mistake at the age of 14, about her lost reputation, her ostracism, her relationship with his mother, her struggle to gain respect of the Harpy society – by beating them bloody.

I hated the Harpy Games, even though I understand that they are for to release the steam, and to sate the Harpies’ incredible bloodlust. And for Kaia, to gain a new, cool name. But I didn’t expect this senseless, mindless carnage.

Anyway, the new characters were fun, the antagonists too, except Tabitha, whose volte-face was totally unbelievable and out of character.

I loved Strider, loved his honesty, straightforwardness, possessiveness, and protectiveness. He was cool and fun, strong and supportive. I loved to follow his slow realization of his own feelings.

Even though I didn't like Kaia very much, I have to admit the romance was nicely built. They fell in love with each other slowly but surely.

The secondary storylines and characters were amazing and intriguing, as always.

Paris…

William…

but

Kane…

… just hold on…

And Lazarus…

All in all
The characterization is great and the romance is engaging. The plot would have been much better if it is not only about those damn Harpy Games!

There is action and thrill, humor, and also some really beautiful moments. The erotica was pretty good too, though not the best of the series. (Oops, sorry, Strider… My heart belongs to Paris…)

But Strider is awesome, and because of him, The Darkest Surrender is really worth reading.

The Darkest Surrender is yet another book in the brilliant Lords of the Underworld series! Honestly, I devoured it and never wanted it to end.
Strider and Torin have always been my faves of the Lords so I’ve been so eager for Strider’s book for such a long time. I was ecstatic to get my hands on a copy and I am happy to say it didn’t disappoint. The storyline was awesome---the Harpy games fun and exciting and I was swept away into the tale and story just as I am with every book in this series.

I have to admit when I first learned that Kaia was to be paired with Strider I wasn’t at all sure about it. I mean, I love all the Skyhawks, but pairing another of them off with another Lord? Wasn’t sure it would work....and yet it did, brilliantly!
As the keeper of Defeat, Strider cannot loose a challenge and everything is a battle for him. With his golden boy looks and attitude, he’s sexy, and witty and hilarious. I love his nature and his attitude---I have from the very beginning. To quote him....he’s just made of awesome! He is by far one of the more possessive and demanding of the lords and he doesn’t share—at all, but I found I liked that about him. He wasn’t sure he wanted Kaia, but when I realised he did, he wanted her completely. He wanted to be her one and only as she was his. Insert dreamy sigh here......

Kaia! Oh, that girl! I’ve thought highly of higher ever since Aeron’s book where she was so good to Olivia, and by the end of Amun’s I was pretty excited for the chance to see her win Strider’s heart. And she certainly did. It was a battle that her feisty nature and strength allowed her to conquer. Kaia never failed to put a smile on my face with her flirty and funny nature. I loved the way she met Strider strike for strike, quip for quip and how she didn’t let his nature beat her. She let him win.....but she didn’t. One of the things I liked about her was that she wasn’t perfect. She’d made mistakes and she had a lot of issues with herself. She was a proud individual, but she had a lot of insecurities and it was nice seeing her overcome with Strider’s help and love.

The relationship between Strider and Kaia was brilliant—I loved it. Both such strong individuals who don’t like loosing, and in the beginning I worried that maybe this would be a problem. I was ecstatic to learn that it wouldn’t be the case. With Strider’s demon, I always assumed he’d need a calm woman, one that didn’t challenge him all that much—boy was I wrong! The thing that made him and Kaia so alike was that she understood his need and desire to win and knew what channelling him would do. And yet she wasn’t afraid to do that from time to time. With her nature she was the ultimate challenge for him. A battle he fought to win and when he did....awww, it was so sweet. She wanted him from the beginning and wanted him, but he still had to fight---mostly himself and even some of her nature to win her heart completely. Sparks flew when they were together and their sex scenes were very, very hot.

I’m so intrigued by the glimpse of Kane and Paris in this book and I know their turns are coming. Paris is next and I’m so excited that Sienna has changed her tune about him—it gives me hope that they’re get there HEA. I’m interested in finding out what it means for Kane with Williams creation and all now that he’s in hell. Soooo exciting. And. This may seem a bit random, but with Zacharel being in the series, I wonder....what about him.....and Cameo? With his angel abilities, perhaps he can see above her voice into the heart of her. It’d certainly be an interesting combination.

I can’t wait for the next book, The Darkest Seduction. It such a long wait and I have to know what’s going to happen next....like....NOW!!

3 Defeated Stars!
This is the eighth book in the Lords of the Underworld series. It was Strider and Kaia's story.
I knew going in that this was probably not going to be a favorite of mine. I never had warmed up to Strider for some reason. He just seemed a bit silly to me. You would think that someone that had to win every challenge ever issued would be a Mr no nonsense type of guy. He wasn't IMO. lol
Strider is the keeper of defeat. He HAS to win every challenge or he will be in serious pain. He's strong, funny and very vain.
Kaia is a harpy and she is also strong and very competitive. I loved her. She hated to lose but knew Strider would be in pain if he did and constantly was letting his demon win so he would be happy. When Kaia was younger she disobeyed her moms orders and something happened that caused her to be shunned by her race and be labeled Kaia the disappointment. All the harpies except her sisters hated Kaia for the destruction that took place when she was a child.
This year the Harpies have invited Kaia and her sisters to compete in the games that are played every year. The winning team will win the prize of all prizes. The prize is the fourth artifact that the Lords have been searching for.
Right away Strider wanted to steal it and forget the games. I loved that we got to see how his feelings slowly but surely started forming for Kaia. How protective he was. How he wanted to slaughter all the evil harpies for hurting her. I loved how he cared for her when she was injured. He was really sweet.
It was fun reading about how tough these harpies were. They were very brutal and we got many details of their fights. The teams all ganged up on Kaia. I felt bad for her. But she could handle it. She did have her Stridey Man to tend to her injuries when the games were over. If she could just figure out how to make him want to be with her. Be with her forever and not just until the games are over.

Why not a five star?
Well I didn't like that Kaia had slept with Paris in a previous book and how Strider kept bringing it up. I'm not sure why that even had to happen at all. I hated that when Strider and Kaia had sex for the first time Paris had to be brought up because of course Strider had to be better than Paris in bed. Ugh! Zip it up Strider!
I also didn't like that Strider kept going on and on about Amun's woman Haidee. I had to hear about that in the last book and I didn't like it then or in this book. Let it rest!!
Kaia attacked Haidee because her and Strider was talking. She didn't even apologize afterwards so that kind of made me dislike Kaia. It really pissed me off! I know the Harpies are very protective of their men but come on. Haidee had nothing to do with Striders feelings. An apology was needed!

It took Strider a long time to figure out his feelings for Kaia. Way too long! Then it seemed like boom he all of a sudden opened his eyes and finally figured out he loved her. But I was kind of over it by then.

Over all I just liked this book. I didn't love it.

I defiantly loved it when we got some of William and Kane though. William was on a mission in the last book and I can proudly say that he succeeded in disposing of that mission. I also had to look up the song he was jamming to while he was slicing and dicing. It cracked me up! I'm very curious to know what is happening with Kane (keeper of disaster) who is being dragged to hell. The book ended with Kane's POV.
I'm excited to finally get to Paris. He's been in and out of every book. His book is next. He's been on a mission to find his woman in Heaven. King Cronus has other plans for her and I don't think they include Paris. I'm rubbing my hands together! I'm ready!

"The Darkest Surrender" is the 8:th instalment in the "Lords of the Underworld"-series and rocked with its fast-paced plot that introduces The Harpy Games where the wild harpy Kaia Skyhawk strives to prove her worth to her people-while she challenges the sensuality of Strider, the demon warrior possessed by Defeat who have his greatest downfall in the wildness of Kaia. Gena Showalter yet again amazed me with this amazing couple that i didn`t expect to love this much.In the whole series so far the romance between Kaia and Strider was the most slow-burn,since the other Lords felt connected to their soulmates at first sight.Kaia and Strider had to truly get to know each other for them to fall in love. But it was a ride i entirely enjoyed since Strider and Kaia are such charismatic funny character, there was never a dull moment with these two!

Kaia Skyhawk surprised me.Well,i knew she was a badass and a temptress, but there was more to her than what she let us see in the former books. She have the greatest heart that earned a mothers love and was extremely protective and caring when it came to her sisters. The way she went about winning the heart of her consort Strider was whole lot of fun, since he is the only one who ever could accept her for who she truly is.That was beautiful for me,and the way she loved Strider without even knowing. She thought him her warrior already from the start, and that he was.

Strider the warrior possessed by the demon of Defeat is barbaric, egotistical, determined, wicked and has a warped sense of humor.I fell for him hard in this book and i loved how he so badly tried to resist Kaia but couldn`t bring himself to.He even joins as her consort in the Harpy Games and that was so sweet! With his demon he always has to win challenges to survive. He couldn’t lose a single challenge without suffering debilitating pain.Every person need a friend like Strider and i love the way he falls for Kaia, the way he protects her and the way he pleasures her.Damn he is a awesome lover in bed, which also shows the awesome way Gena writes steamy sex-scenes!Both Kaia and Strider are Warriors honed on the field of battle, sharp as a dagger, cynical, willing to do anything for their friends. Both of them fit together so well and i love how Strider marries them without telling her with her unconscious, lol the consort bond hadn`t been enough for him.

I also got to meet the very sexy Lazarus and i know he is future soulmate of the very sad warrior Cameo,so i am so looking forward until they meet.Kane and William are captured by the Hunters and that means Hell.Paris are in Heaven fighting for his Sienna and their book are next and i just can`t control myself of the intense anticipation i feel!!!

Its official, this is now my favourite book in the series and Strider my favourite Lord. Everything about this book surpassed all the others for me.

Strider is cooler than the other Lords, he is confident, egotistical, competitive, stubborn and hot, unlike the rest he doesn't feel guilty or thinks he deserved the punishment, he even loves the demon, except when he looses a challenge and is in pain, since he is possessed by the demon of defeat, he experience pain anytime he looses a bet or challenge, be it game, battle or a conversation, Strider just has to win, it doesn't help that he is competitive by nature either.

Kaia the love interest is a Harpy, She is just a female version of Strider, but not as egotistical as him, but she loves herself, confident, pretty, badass etc. She knows what she wants and goes for it, even when Strider was kind of an ass at first, I seriously don't blame hin though, he knows he will loose to her most time and that was what he couldn't handle at first. But that did not last.

Unlike the other books in the series, this one took place outside Budapest, apart from Strider the Lords were rarely in this, the book just revolve around the Harpy games which is so cool, the fight scenes were so well depicted, the drama is also cool, the angels were also here, we got more about Lysander and Zacheral, I gotta admit, I loved what I got.

Δεύτερη φορά που το διαβάζω και το λάτρεψα το ίδιο!!
(Η κριτική που ακολουθεί (στα αγγλικά) είναι από την πρώτη φορά που το διάβασα και δε θα την αλλάξω)

************************************

What can I say about “The Darkest Surrender” the eighth book in the Lords of the Underworld series by Gena Showalter??? It was AWESOME!!

Yeah, it’s true. After so many books in this series the book number eight is GREAT! My personal opinion is that is one of the BEST in the series and I mean it! The plot is very good and the main couple is one of my favorites in a paranormal romance series. I also like that this book has a lot of Harpies and their Games although they were scary!

Strider is the keeper of the demon of Defeat and he suffers when he can’t win. He’s sexy (of course!), funny (very!!) and stubborn as…hell! He wants Kaia and he has a lot of funny moments at the beginning of the book when he’s trying to convince himself (without success!) that he doesn’t want her! I really liked him from the previous books but in this one I loved him because there are moments that he’s super confident and other moments that he’s insecure and I think it’s kind of cute!

Kaia, a Harpy, is one of the strongest female characters in a paranormal romance series. But, although everyone thinks that she’s strong and she doesn’t need anyone, the truth lies elsewhere. After a big mistake that she made in the past, now she only seems confident. In truth, she is desperate to be loved and accepted by her mother. She loves Strider very much and she doesn’t want to hurt him. She only wants to be wanted for what she is and she doesn’t want to have him against his will.

These two are perfect for each other! They are both stubborn but strong and determined to have what they want. I love them!

And as for the other characters in the book….. Of course, there is Paris. He’s trying to find the woman he wants and a lot of things happening! I WANT HIS BOOK NOW!!!
William (my favorite!) and Kane are having an adventure and they’re in big trouble but we need to wait for the next book, also! Grrr!!!

So, I totally recommend it and I have to say that Gena Showalter wrote another awesome book!!

Yet another fun episode in the Lords of the Underworld series. I’ve noticed that word crops up almost every time I write a review for one of Showalter’s books—fun. The characters are always so funny, and even when they don’t get along, their dislike of each other always includes funny situations and verbal sparring.

I was a little uncertain of Kaia and Strider as a couple. I wasn’t exactly thrilled to have one of the protagonists have a sexual history with the other protagonist’s friend, but the author actually pulled it off pretty well. Strider was bothered by it, yes, but he eventually got over it and he never tried to “forgive” her, because he knew there was really nothing for him to forgive. I also thought the reason for a big part of his reluctance to be with her made a lot of sense. I never thought about what it would mean for a competitive guy like him to come after “the sexorcist.” I imagine anyone would have anxiety about that.

The setup for putting Strider and Kaia in close proximity was pretty weak, but once they were stuck in each other’s company it wasn’t too hard to ignore that and move on. The harpy games were exciting on their own, so throwing in a little extra heat with Kaia and Strider made it even better. The harpies were one of my favorite parts of the book! They were all so bloodthirsty and off the wall that any scene with them in it—which was most of them—really popped. The violence and heckling between them reminded me of the valkyries in Kresley Cole’s Immortals After Dark series and Shelly Laurenston’s characters in her Pride series. In other words, they were a riot.

I was surprised to hear the backstory on Kaia. I felt bad for her having such a rough life based on that one incident. Especially when they were blaming the wrong person! I was a little surprised she was so emo about her mom not being proud of her, though. How long has it been? Shouldn’t you be over this by now? Either way, her determination to be better was endearing and it was sad to see her be underestimated by those closest to her.

Kaia and Strider were great together. They were both cocky as hell and enjoyed their constant challenges, although Kaia had a tendency to use his inability to refuse a challenge against him when she wanted to get her way. Honestly, I have a sneaking suspicion that no one else out there would put up with their egos so it’s lucky they found each other. ;)

We get to see some of the side characters, but the author kept them from taking over, which has been a complaint of mine in the past. William and Kane get some page time and it seems like there will be an interesting storyline developing with them from the events we see here. We also got a peek at Legion and how she’s doing. I was really surprised with how she seemed in this book. Is it possible that I might actually one day like her now that she seems so different??? That would be pretty shocking. We also got to see more of Sabin and Gwen, which thrilled me because I really enjoyed their story. Plus, more Paris. His storyline really seems to be heating up. I haven’t had much interest in him in the past, but he seems to be getting a darker edge and a bitterness about his demon that quite intrigues me.

I enjoyed most of this book but it was not quite as action filled as most of the other ones, so I felt like I was spinning my wheels quite a few times. It slowed the pacing down and occasionally caused my attention to wander. Luckily the rest of the book pleased me enough that this was not a huge issue. I’m really looking forward to the next entry in the series.

Favorite Quote:
That damn kiss had ruined everything. Had he kept his tongue to himself, he could have continued thinking of Kaia as a friend and only a friend. Now, he just wanted to convince her that blow jobs were a mandatory part of their arrangement.

3.5 STARS

I did like it... It's just that thought I would like it so MUCH FREAKING MORE! I mean, I have been waiting to read a book about one of the Harpies since forever and I thought it would be much better than what it actually was. I still adore the plot and the characters so it's extremely hard to rate a book in this series with a lower rating than 4 stars, still I'm a bit disappointed...

I did like Strider, I know many just thought he was too egocentric and vane, but I think he was sweet and funny as hell. He just made me laugh so many times I couldn't help to love him and his Ego checks, LOL. Kaia was amazing as well, as all the Harpies are. They are just so weird,LOL, but in a good way. Sometimes they make me think about the Valkyries from the Immortals after Dark series.

Now I'll explain why this book wasn't as good as the rest for me :

1. I'm just plain-sick-bored of Paris. I'm sorry about it because he used to be my fav character, but I just can't seem to like him anymore. He just frustrates me and totally annoys me, and in this book we get Kaia's and Strider's story constantly interrupted to get glimpses from his POV, and we only read about him doing nothing but screwing the whole female and male population for information that got him nowhere (at least on this installment).
B.O.R.I.N.G.

2. I also felt like Strider kept pushing Kaia away for too long, to a point where I just wanted to smack him badly for being such an asshole. It's like it took him forever to see her, and then form nowhere she turns out to be the love of his life. It just seemed to pass from a why-is-it-taking-you-so-freaking-long-to-really-see-her to a I-will-dye-without-her to fast.

Besides those two points I had a nice time with the book and will be dying to read more about this series as always.

4 ½-5 stars – Paranormal Romance

GAWD this cover is gorgeous!

And Strider? He’s a sexy, snarky, narcissistic, surprisingly sweet, possessive, protective, and all around badass, fun-loving warrior. His constant need for challenge to assuage his demon of Defeat and egotistical inner dialogue is freaking hilarious. He’s one of my favorite Lords and Kaia the Kick-Ass (my chosen nickname for her) Harpy is just perfect for him. Darkest Surrender is a great addition to the LOTU series.

“You are not Kaia the Disappointment. Do you hear me? That’s what I was trying to tell you earlier. You are Kaia the Mighty. How many Harpies out there do you think could have brought down the most badass Lord of the Underworld? The same Lord who also happens to be the strongest, sexiest and smartest. And by the way, in case there’s any doubt, I’m describing me.”

Here’s my Strider casting:

It seems this author looked around and couldn't find a fmc to put up with Strider so she saddled poor Kaia with him

In every previous couple-up demon and warrior knew there was something special about the h from the moment they met. Strider the dick, lusted after Kaia as did Kane, Paris and William but at no time did it seem that she was anything special to him. As a matter of fact the s.o.b wanted Haidee more than he wanted Kaia but we're told here the reason he never pursued her is because she slept with Paris the Sexorcist so of course defeat couldn't out do the king of sex (,cough, bullshit, cough, cough) .So Strider the ultimate Jackass rejected her on the many occasions that she came to him admitting she cared for him.

"How many women had Strider been with over the years? How many after Kaia had declared herself to him? Any one of those women could have been a friend of hers."

☝that is Strider reasoning with himself why he shouldn't be upset that she had slept with Paris 🤦

So eventually Strider the manwhore extraordinaire overcame his aversion to being with Kaia (because she'd slept with Paris and she'd challenge him constantly)and decided he's in love with her and no woman before her compares, not even Haidee because what he felt for Haidee wasn't forever
like with K, yes he'd wanted Haidee but then he'd have walked away afterwards not like how he wanted to keep K- nope not buying the bullshit!

Then we come to Kaia who in previous books felt no regret at sleeping with Paris or being the bold confident, unrepentant Harpy that she is. Here?? we get a different Kaia, one who is vulnerable and constantly bypasses rejection to keep offering herself to dickwad I mean Strider.....it was embarrassing to read how she humiliated herself to get him to give her a chance.

Then lo and behold Strider is her consort- What?!! When???How?!!- so Strider goes along with her to the Harpy games as her consort- they go from enemies? to lovers to marriage 🤢

On the way to this hfn Haidee is attacked by Kaia for speaking to Strider as Kaia's Harpy was not able to deal with the woman that her consort had wanted being so close to him- wtf?!!?? Amun should've unleashed an asskicking on both Kaia and Strider!

Anyways I really enjoyed this story of the manwhore hero who never even wanted(except for sex) the h and was reluctant to be with her for most of the story and the previously badass h who submitted herself to a man who had to be convinced that they should be together. I really really enjoyed this Trainwreck..........f**k no I hated it and ABHORRED Strider!!!!!

I remember when I first heard Strider and Kaia were being paired together. It was a bad day for me. I pretty much freaked out. I was hoping for the Amun/Kaia and Strider/Haidee pairings. However, I learned with Amun and Haidee's book that I should have just trusted Gena in the first place. That lesson has been completely reinforced with this book. There is no way that Strider or Kaia could be with anyone other than each other. They are quite simply, perfect for each other. Looking back, I can't believe I ever thought that they didn't belong together. They are the perfect balance for each other. Kaia constantly challenges Strider to things he can definitely win, which helps him keep up his strength but it also endears her to him. Likewise, Strider is the perfect consort for Kaia because he's always there, ready and willing to care for and help her. These two are pretty damn explosive together.

I absolutely loved being able to see into the Harpy world with this book. In The Darkest Whisper and The Darkest Angel, you don't really get much insight into their world outside of what Gwen and Bianka reveal to Sabin and Lysander because the storylines revolve around their time with the Lords. But in The Darkest Surrender, Kaia and her sisters participate in the Harpy Games (think extremely violent Olympics). We get to see the interactions between other Harpies, not just amongst the Skyhawk sisters. And, let me tell you, it's pretty damn interesting.

Also in this book we see Paris' continued search for Sienna. While I applaud the man for going after his woman and all that, I just wished I didn't have to read his point of view. He's just so whiny. He makes me want to punch people. I honestly have no idea how I am going to make it through his book. Even though I was upset, I never totally hated the idea of Strider and Kaia or Amun and Haidee. Yet, I have absolutely no desire to read about Paris and Sienna. I say that every series has at least one character that I end up hating. Well, these two are two of the most prominent on my list for this series. And, really, it's not so much that I hate them. It's that I find them annoying. I kind of just want them to get it over with already. So, we'll see how I last when I read The Darkest Seduction.

I loved the parts from Kane's and William's points of view, though. I honestly cannot wait for Kane's book. The poor guy has been pretty much non-existent in the series until now. I cannot wait to see what's going to happen with him. And who his woman is going to be. Will it be the Keeper of Irresponsibility or the female Horseman? Or is the female Horseman the Keeper of Irresponsibility? Questions with no answers! And then there's William, my adorable William. He finally kills Gilly's family! It's about damn time, dude! And now I can't wait to see how his relationship with Gilly is going to develop as a result of this.

So, as I'm sure you can tell, I absolutely loved this book. It's now one of my favorites. And it's definitely my second favorite of the series. The Darkest Whisper remains my favorite. You just can't top my adorable Sabin. Who, by the way, was in this book a lot! I WAS SO EXCITED! I am absolutely and irrevocably in love with that man. Oh Sabin and his bullhorn...Silly man! Anyway! Yes, great book; I really enjoyed it.

Favorite Quote:
"I hate this Gladiator shit," Sabin muttered.

"Yes, well, where do you think the Romans learned from?"

Sabin sputtered for a minute. "You're trying to tell me
Harpies are responsible for this? That the Romans learned from them?"

"I must try only if you are lacking intelligence."

Don't bother to ask me why I give such a low rating for this. Because I'm still mourning.

Yeah, you hear me right, I never hate LOTU. I love LOTU with all my heart. Even I translated one of the book of this series, The Darkest Pleasure. And that's like a gift for me. But this book make me cry, in a bad way.

I despise Strider. I hate that his personality change so much. He seems funny and entertaining in the beginning. I love the scene at The Darkest Kiss, when he shoot Lucien at bed, after Lucien bondaged by Anya. He seems so kind to Gwen at The Darkest Whisper. But, after Amun's book at The Darkest Secret, he make me pissed of! His attitude toward Amun and, especially Haidee, his arrogancy, his... everything, make me want to throw something hard and heavy to him (not me of course). I have a bad feeling when I start reading this. Hope I will like it, or love it. Even I hate what Strider become to.

My hope is crushed down.

Not just I don't like Strider, I hate Kaia even more! I don't like harpies, except Gwen. Ever! I think Gena want make harpies like what Kresley Cole do to Valkyries at IAD series. But I'm sad to said this, she failed. The harpies just annoying and bothersome creatures that make me want to bitch-slap them. And don't get me started with Kaia's "I'm not worthy for Strider" attitude. Make me want to scream and pulled my hair.

I don't like what Gena do to Strider at here. He just become Kaia's sidekick. I don't find their bantering scene sexy. Both seems childish, and again their conversation annoyed me, a lot. I don't care Kaia had slept with Paris, cause I know its just friend to friend. But I found myself skipping Kaia and Strider's sex scenes. Just because, both are annoying as hell.

I think when Gena successfully make Haidee as Amun's mate and make me enjoy their story, she failed with Strider and Kaia. Heck, I don't want Kaia have her own story. Why she just can be forever a secondary character? I'll be happy then. Maybe if Strider's heroine is someone else, with better personalities, maybe I will love this one.

So many maybe *sigh*

I give this 2 stars, because I like the story. I like William's revenge part. I like the idea of Harpy Games, but then I dislike the harpies (still). I'm intrigued with what Gena have for Kane. I can't wait to know more about Paris, and lucky his book is the next.

I think I'm sound harsh, but The Darkest Surrender is the baddest book in LOTU series. Not the best, never for me. I know I'm such a minority here, because seems like almost all my GR friends give it high rating. Make me sad because I can't enjoy this book like others do.

I hope I will love Paris's story at The Darkest Seduction. Since I have waiting his story for eternity.

Strider's story... with Kaia. What? O__O!!
I know its old news, but I'm still shocked about this. The cover is the hottest, surpassed Reyes's and Lucien's which are my favorite.

Just hope, when Paul Marron will featured at LOTU cover. I really hope someday he does.. *g*

I want to steal 5 things from Kaia:

1. Her Sumo wrestler coffee table
2. Strider
3. Her hula lamp
4. Strider
5. Her sofa that has legs on the armrests.

Yes, as you can see I lovedboth Kaia's decorating style and her man. But then who can resist Strider the Keeper of Defeat? Face of an angel, body od a god and the sense of humour of a devil. I am panting just thinking about it! But Strider does have a weakness, he can't lose a single challange otherwise he suffers debilitating agony, and Kaia is extremely challenging. But he is Kaia's consort and she is determined to have him and does in fact need him if as she ig going to be competeing in the Harpy Games and without his blood and calming influence she may not survive.

I was so looking forward to this book! The build up to Kaia and Striders in the previous book was fantastic and they have great chemistry and the witty banter and wicked comments flow very naturally between them. However, although I did enjoy their relationship, I felt something was missing I didn't find myself lost to the book as I have been alot of the others. They made a great couple and as indivduals they were fantastic, I loved Kaia's combination of towering confidence and little girl vulnrability and Strider was well, AWESOME (ego check!)

I can't really put my finger on why I didn't enjoy this book as much as the others, the Harpy Games was an interesting idea and yes maybe quite similar to Kresley Cole's Talisman Hie in Immortals After Dark, but that didn't bother me. I also liked that this book introduced you to some more secondary characters which I have a feeling will be coming out to play in the future, such as Lazarus.

I did love the Kane & William parts and the Paris parts though, especially the Paris parts he has changed so much since thr first book and I am now dying for his to FINALLY get his HEA damn it Showalter, haven't you tortured him enough? LOL! And Kane, we haven't seen much of him in the previous books so I liked havinga peek inside his noggin'.

I think maybe after thinking about this since yesterday, what I didn't like about this book was that it didn't seem like a LOTU book, although the Hunters were in it as were some of the other Lords it just didn't have the LOTU vibe. It seemed like a 0.5 book as there didn't seem to be much focus on Pandora's Box,despite the presence ofa certain artifcat. Plus you know my snuggle bunny Maddox wasn't in it and that is an automatic star taken right there!

Finally got around to finishing this book--which really says a great deal about what I thought about it. Despite being extremely excited for Strider and Kaia's story I found this addition to the series to be anticlimactic.

Don't get me wrong; the romance story arc between Strider and Kaia was tons of fun as, one would expect, but the plot in this book does not connect well with the general plot of the series. In "The Darkest Surrender" Showalter sets aside the main antagonists thus far, the Hunters, so that the story can be set during the Harpy Olympics where an artifact is to be retrieved. Hunters do make a few appearances but none of them to really drive the plot. They were more like hurdles and served as a minor inconvenience.

That being said, the pace is pretty slow throughout the novel since there is no real urgency with the events taking place with gaps of days in between allotted for recovery.

All in all this is not the strongest book in the series but still a good read.

Original Update:

HOLY GODS ON OLYMPUS! D: PLEASE PUSH THE PUBLISHING DATE UP! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!

I can't wait to read Strider's story. I love how Showalter isn't bringing in another character but just working with one that has come into the fortress a little while back. I am soo excited! September seems like forever away.

Ναι!

5+ Stars I LOVED IT!!!!

Where to begin, where to begin.......

Is it just me, or is this series becoming better, hotter, and so addicting?! Holy Smokes! I've waiting so long for Strider's novel, little did I know it came with a bonus. Kaia! What other person could challenge Strider and mean it? Looks like Mr. King of the freaking world, now has his own personnel sidekick. Strider and Kaia are made for each other.AWESOME! Defeat and Harpy, no way denying them.

Let the games begin!

In all honesty, did Strider really think he could keep pushing Kaia away? NOT! What a fool! The heavy attraction is there. Kaia giving up on Strider is the best thing she ever did, although it her hurt immensely. Strider comes to his senses, eventually. For instance, he didn't have the heart and couldn't face Kaia getting hurt in any way. (harpies are dirty little fighters) So,Hmmm... Strider as Kaia's consort? You damn straight he is! I wouldn't have it any other way *wiggles eyebrows*

It all began with the Harpy Games!

Set up or no setup, I loved this part of the story. It was wickedly awesome! I didn't like as much to the "why?" of how Kaia and her harpy sisters were invited, just because I knew people I love in this story were bound to get hurt. BUT! They're  all strong in their own way.No one gives up without a good dirty fight! Suck on that sour lemon  Juliette! Juliette is just one of those in a bunch that thinks she's the shite and in control of everyone. NOT! She's a Stinky  Harpy and a total Byotch! She's the one who sets everything up to make sure Kaia doesn't win the prize and doesn't make it out alive.Well shite, they underestimated Kaia. Juliette has gotta a big badass harpy willing to give her a run for her money. Kaia is the bomb diggity with her  awesome skills. Well there's a whole story behind Juliette and Kaia's past,it ain't pretty but, the past is the past. And Kaia's not the total blame for it, well that's my opinion.

When Strider decides to become Kaia's consort, he didn't know what the prize was and now that he knows, he'll do whatever it takes to steal it. What's that prize? It's the fourth artifact. The one needed to help the Lords of the Underworld find and destroy Pandora's Box. If the Lords don't claim the Paring Rod, anyone would have the power to wipe the Lords out forever from existence. Now isn't that a load of WTH? Hells Yes! I couldn't believe  it myself. My only reaction was " the pressure is on". Kaia refuses to steal it, she wants to win it the right way by winning the competition and making a name for herself rather then the Harpies naming her "Kaia the dissapoiment" This badass Harpy makes all the Harpies lick the floor they walk on with her witty self. That even included Kaia's mother. I still can't stand the woman, no matter what her motives were  they were condescending! Bleh! She makes me sick, that is a disgrace to anyone who is a mother.

I loved the plot of the story, Strider and Kaia's HEA was phenomenal, sparks flew off the pages with this couple. Challenging one another was a given, it's who they are and I loved it! I didn't expect to get more intel on all her sisters and their relationships, so that was really nice to read on, it gave me more insight and I'm now a total Harpy Fantatic! I want wings and be a part of their clan :D

Now as for Kane, William and Paris's par take in this story is intriguing. I'm just wondering what could possibly come next? There's so much going on I can't see where Gena Showalter is taking this series. I'm just hoping for the best and crossing my fingers for Paris. The man is gonna be the death of me with his wallowing! All my answers will be answered soon enough and as usual I can not wait for the next novel!

Btw! Strider's "Ego Checking" was downright hilarious! It reminded me more and more why I love that man. Example: "Pants down" was a good look for him. A really good look.Ego check! ...... Lolz! Love it!

2 1/5 STARS.

I am &^%$$$##%^()(*&&^^RT$#@@#$ annoyed that the author ruined the ultimate cool Strider's book! It doesn't even deserve this score, but I can't bring myself to give a book about Strider a low mark. He is so great, she should've done him justice! It's Strider, and she ruined it!

I need to walk away and breathe before I give it a lower mark. Paris' book better be GOOD or I'm going to do this to the series...

I don't know how this book has the highest rating of the series but okay. In a word I would describe the couple as egocentric. And it was horrible being in their mind. Plus the Harpies as a whole are so immature. All the conversations were like children competing to see who had the biggest toy. Just horrible.

The two things that kept me going to finish this book was the fact that we are finally close to the 4th artifact and that Paris' book is next. Finally.

Gena is a champion. If I was stranded on a deserted island with her I would totally ‘tap that’.....well I’d ‘tap that’ occasionally......whenever I unchained her from the writing desk I would miraculously find so that she could continue to write these phenomenal stories.

The Darkest Surrender was another fan-fucking-tastic edition to one of my all time favourite series.

Strider is sooooo damn edible. I want to start at his sexy muscled stomach and work my way out, stopping at the extra hard parts until I am totally gorged on his sexiness. He is 100% my kind of man. Dominant as hell, masculine in every way shape and form – yet confident enough to wear a shirt that says “I heart William.” Ohhh how I crave a piece of this sexy Lord.

Kaia is also a heroine I TOTALLY dig. She was sassy, sexy and someone worthy of the man I now crave.

The heat between them was scorching and I loved reading their sarcasm filled story.

Only thing that stopped me from giving a perfect score was the ending of the story. It seemed rushed and not entirely consistent with the series. From initial impressions I thought the Lords of the Underworld were affected with immeasurable that sometimes had them passed out for days on end when they lost a battle with their demon, however when Strider lost a battle at one point in the book it didn’t seem to affect him as much as I thought it should. From a man that gets beaten and battered severely on a regular basis, the pain he received from his demon didn’t seem like all that worse in comparison. But anyway – that is just one inconsequential thing really.

All in all – FABULOUS BOOK.

My love for Kaia and Strider has grown so much since the first time I read them, it’s ridiculously amazing.

Kaia is so spectacular and Strider is so great and supporting, arg! They are, without a doubt, my favorite couple so far! They’re goals.

And let me tell you that holy damn, Harpies are so freaking cool in this narrative I just wish for a spin-off focusing solely on them.

Strider, one of my favorite Lords, finally found his match. Kaia, Harpy extraordinaire, has known for a while now that Strider was her Consort. Too bad he doesn’t want anything to do with her.
Strider’s book was awesome, almost as awesome as Strider himself, oh ego-check ;) You’ll catch Strider doing those ego-checks throughout just to remind himself that oh wait, it’s not ego if it’s true. He was a fun hero to have. The only thing that drove me nuts was the Harpy Games. While cool to see, I didn’t like the amount of time it took from the romance. The plot was super cool though, and so was the sabotage.

Someone is out to get Kaia, and while they think they know who it is, we also have that person letting Hunters know where Kaia and Strider, Gwen and Sabin, and Bianka and Lysander are. That’s fighting dirty. Seeing Kaia’s backstory and finding out that she is known amongst Harpies as Kaia the Disappointment was pretty heartwrenching. She screwed up at 14 and the only Harpies who know her awesomeness are her sisters. It was so frustrating because I wanted to reach through the book and strangle a few characters.

But the romance was fun, because Strider began to realize that Kaia challenged his demon in a good way, without using it against him like previous girlfriends had. He also finally sucked it up and decided to see if he would in fact be better than Paris in bed with her. That may not make sense, unless you realize that he has the demon of Defeat inside, and any time he loses, he suffers in extreme pain for days. And Paris has the demon of Promiscuity, so Strider has to be better than Paris, or he can’t be with Kaia. Little does he understand that he will be better just because Kaia loves him, not due to his skills.

But when they came together it made it all the sweeter (and hotter!) due to the wait. And I liked how they worked together as a team, even before they realized that they loved each other. The twist at the end with Kaia’s mom was unexpected. But I can’t wait for the Angels of Darkness spin-off series now, Zachaerel especially! Rawr!

There were two side-stories going on with William and Paris. Paris is still on the hunt for Sienna, and William finally took out his rage on Gilly’s parents. Both of those plots have me intrigued for their books, and I’m such a Showalter fan-girl now, it’s ridiculous. She has a way of pairing couples together who really don’t seem to fit well together, but they end up complimenting each other. Fantastic series, and a fantastic author.
