Yes, you should imagine me yelling that last sentence. It is amazing. AMAZING! Don't miss out on the greatest thing you're going to read this year.
Seriously.
It is that good.
This book is incredibly underrated. I can't understand why it hasn't received more five-star reviews! I have nothing but PRAISE for Basran's marvelous debut novel.
"Everything Was Good-bye" is a work of pure postmodern genius with all the raw emotion and gravity of time that one hopes to find in a piece from this genre. Basran's novel is part coming-of-age story, part family drama all tied together by a haunting, natural prose that will have you flowing through the pages. The elegance of the writing coupled with the perfect pacing puts this book at the very top of my list of greats.
This novel follows Meena, an Indo-Canadian woman, as she struggles between the desire to forge an identity away from the strict traditions of her parents' homeland and her love for her family. It is the classic conflict of love and duty set in the contemporary stage--still as gripping and relevant as its early counterparts. It is a narrative about chances, choices, and the what-if's that plague all of us.

Interesting coming of age story that follows the relationship of Neil, a young middle-class man, and Brenda, a college-girl from the rich neighbourhood, as it develops and eventually loses momentum. It's a truly honest depiction of young relationships without exaggerated romance, simply genuine emotions.

It was a interesting take on the detective fiction genre with a strong female detective character at the forefront of all the action. The strength of this novel, in my opinion, is the excellent characterization. Every character in this novel felt real and the relationships between them are equally believable.
It's a fun read but nothing particularly ground-breaking. If you are a fan of the genre then you will absolutely love this addition. ...more

"The Dark Rose" by Erin Kelly is a page-turner of a wild ride. Told through two different perspectives and varying timelines, it is crafted with obvious care leaving just enough to keep your eyes glued to the page while giving plenty for you to lose yourself in the story. This novel definitely lives up to its promise of being a "brilliant new thriller". Not only are the events in "The Dark Rose" shrouded with palpable atmospheric mystery but within this fog are situated compelling characters from whom the readers will not be able to separate themselves. Try as you might, you can't help but to relate to Paul and Louisa as they submit to passionate, wild abandon in search for the kind of love that can be found only within the surreality of an Elizabethan garden.
The significance of the restoration of this garden in their story is so subtle yet roots it in a history of young lovers driven to insane acts in the throes of their desires. This is a novel about the feeling of invincibility that consumes us in our youths and the distortion it creates as it is projected onto the idea of romantic love as that which can conquer all. No deed is too despicable when one does it out of love--or, at least, that is what one can be led to believe.
This novel is a perfect thriller with all loose ends tied together in a satisfying conclusion. More than that, however, this novel is a shining example of wonderful storytelling with no detail insignificant and every sentence carrying the weight of purpose. I cannot praise it enough for that.
I will absolutely recommend this novel to anyone! Erin Kelly received critical acclaim with her first novel "The Poison Tree" and it is evident that she deserves it. I have not yet read her debut novel but after reading "The Dark Rose" I will certainly be adding it to my to-read list. ...more

It's pace is very slow with the narrator deviating from the main plot often to follow the story lines of the Deathless Man and the Tiger's Wife. However, the storytelling is rich and satisfying. This novel is a collection of stories fondly related by an adoring granddaughter in a close, private voice. The beauty of this novel doesn't lie entirely in the story but in the statement it makes about the role that folklore plays in culture even in the present. ...more

This novellaIn "Bartleby, the Scrivener" Melville's feelings toward the disjoint between his audience and his masterpiece "Moby Dick" comes to light.
This novella is told through the eyes of an average Wall Street lawyer who hires the titular Bartleby as a scrivener, or a copyist, as he attempts to describe the oddest of his employees. The story revolves around the nameless lawyer's inability to understand Bartleby as well as Bartleby's failure to communicate with those working in the tiny, cramped office in Wall Street.
Bartleby is a depressed man who, while being an efficient worker, refuses repeatedly to bend to social expectations in such a way that those around him are taken aback and baffled by his passive resistance. It is a result of this bafflement that the lawyer sought to comprehend the conundrum of Bartleby's character and motivations leading the story to take a dark turn.
Some recognize this work to be a response to the poor reception of Melville's dense tome "Moby Dick" in which he failed to get his point across to the audience of his time creating a sort of parable of miscommunication. The novella is a perfect example of a short story. The characters are wonderful and well-rounded despite the short length of time that the reader spends with them. They are colorful in ways they are engaging and memorable. The plot moves briskly and evenly throughout in the oppressive atmosphere set up by Melville as the readers themselves are incited to join in solving the mystery of Bartleby.
"Bartleby, the Scrivener" is a great work of literature that draws the reader in to take part in this story of loneliness, sadness, and doubt--and ultimately, the failure to understand these emotions in another human being. ...more
