Laughter as a response?

By halfway through, I was starting to laugh, which I don't think is the intended response. Oh, the melodrama! (And, yet, the characters were surprisingly flat.) I have no doubt that Ito is skilled (a lot of the artwork is gross and fitting for the body horror contained within the covers). I have fond memories of this book; I saw it at a friend's place and convinced them to lend it to me. I accidentally read the ending because I read it the wrong way lolol. I brought it to the office Book Club show and tell. I read it at bedtime but lost sleep because of the body horror theme.
