I love Sanji and can tell I'm going to keep loving him. :) I love how he says he's a cook and his job is to feed hungry people, not judge them. And the way Luffy keeps counting him as part of his crew made me laugh. Though no one can say no to Luffy for long. The Nami situation is upsetting. :(

It had a happy ending so the creepiness is fun and won't linger. Kids will enjoy the delightfully naughty mention of underpants all through the book. I enjoyed all the ways the little bunny--excuse me, big bunny--tried to get rid of the creepy underwear. The illustrations are all dark and colorless except for the glowing underwear and it really works for the book. ...more

There was enough foreshadowing to make me mistrust everyone, but it wasn't so obvious that the plot twists were expected. I love Violet and seeing her fight through all the obstacles using her brain and her friends was so nice. She accepts the way her body is made and makes others accept her, too. The society seems a bit weird. Fighting a war for 400 years and not getting anywhere while killing off half of the cadets who want to fight for you seemed a bit odd to me. But I let that go and just enjoyed the writing. ...more

The feminist message was stately strongly, but the girls didn't really do much to make the reader think they were worthy of spear-heading that movement. They kept making silly decisions that got other people killed. The series should have ended with her honoring her promises in the second book....more

The chapters alternate POV from the beauty to the beast and the story moved forward at a really good pace. I liked the representation of a character with Cerebral Palsy. She didn't let it stop her from doing everything she needed to.
My father once said we are all dealt a hand at birth. A good hand can ultimately lose--just as a poor hand can win-- but we must all play the cards fate deals. The choices we face may not be the choices we want, but they are choices nonetheless.
I love this because one of the characters was dealt a great hand and the other one a not so great hand and look how both lives have turned out. I liked the end as well. (view spoiler)[It was nice that it could have been Grey or Harper that ended the curse. It's too trite to say that she suddenly fell in love. (hide spoiler)]...more

I enjoyed reading the book quite a bit, so I was able to forgive some logical inconsistencies and plot problems. The author of the book is from Nigeria and place names and language elements from there are included. I was not a fan of the way the animals were named. It was jarring.
I teach you to be warriors in the garden so you will never be gardeners in the war.
I loved Mama Agba and her way of preparing the Diviners for their futures. At this time, there is no hope of magic and the oppression is bleak, but she keeps her students working for a future that she can only pray for.
Content notes: mentions of rape, lots of violence, leading to death, slavery, torture, passionate kissing, a sex scene off-screen, drinking, witchcraft

The identification of the antagonist is somewhat obvious, but there is plenty of suspense. I spent most of the book wondering why Gemma would keep making such horrible decisions, but she is a very sheltered 16-year-old, so I guess she can be forgiven. She does grow and by the end of the book, I'm not shaking my head at her so much. :) ...more

The last 150 pages or so were just great and it was like the first few books. The first 80 percent of the book is all about mental health and training montages mixed with a bunch of sex scenes. These are a bit more graphic and in-depth than the first few books, I think. This volume is more cerebral and mental than the others. There wasn't much action, which is my favorite part of the other books. If I remember, that was my complaint about the second book--it had too much focus on recovering from trauma. I guess I am more into action than introspection. It is written well and feels realistic, though. I liked the friendships growing between the Valkyries and their final battle! Girls kick butt! I didn't really like the way they sidelined Feyre and co. since I loved that character and her kicking butt was the best part of the first 3 books. But I guess if you want to focus on two other characters, you have to do something to get them out of the way. And watching Nesta kick butt was very nice, too. :)
Though she had fought bac against Tomas, against the Cauldron, against the King of Hybern, they had all happened to her. She had survived, but she had been helpless and afraid. Not today. Today, she would happen to him.
