Upon further reflection, the way Gwen was completely besotted with Gideon and they both fell in love so quickly and made such stupid choices was irritating, but then it IS YA and that's pretty much how it's supposed to be.

The entire series is pretty compact as the first and second books both take place in only about 2 weeks. The very quick love between the two characters is very YA and is kinda irritating. I despair of Gwen's common sense and really the common sense of so many of the characters. I don't understand what some of the characters are thinking! The muckety mucks of the cult don't even seem to realize she can talk to ghosts though she isn't really hiding it. The parents are hiding things from Gwen that she actually seems to need to know. There are lots of plot strings hanging from the first and second books that I'm hoping the third book pays off. I was entertained while reading and the mystery is good, if progressing a bit slowly. There is too much side information about Gwen's feelings, but it's a YA book and that is pretty much standard. :)

The protagonist is 16, but the story is appropriate for middle school, which is nice. The premise of genetically passed time travel abilities is one I haven't seen before. The weird cult that is in charge of the time travelers and the mystery behind Gwyneth's birth were the most interesting parts. I wouldn't read this one without the second one handy since it is rather cliff-hangery and not all of the events in this book are explained in it.

I thought that thereI read this book because it was on our state award list. The story has some good scary moments, but they are not gory or graphic. I thought that there were a bit too many people pressuring Rafa to forgive his abusive, addict mother. He obviously needs more time and it rankled that he would be forced to cohabitate with her so closely so quickly just feels wrong. And that plot point took way too much time in this book.
...the thing with scary stories is once you hear them, everything becomes creepy. Water dripping from a pipe becomes a tiny gargoyle buried alive under the house tapping its way out. Any slight scrape against the window becomes a killer clown who escaped from hell's prison. With just a little boost, the imagination can run wild like a pack of sled puppies and take us for a ride off a cliff.
The danger of horror! :) I have been there.

I felt like the series could have ended happily at the end of the second bookThis 3rd book of the series didn't feel very connected to the first two. I felt like the series could have ended happily at the end of the second book excluding the epilogue. This one felt rushed and introduced a whole lot of people, places, and issues while just dropping some of the old ones and never finishing plot lines. I was left with more questions than I'd like. I really didn't care for the beginning slave ship allegory as it is not a plot or time I enjoy reading about. The whole series seems to be an African Diaspora metaphor with South America and Africa and either North America or Europe represented. This last book focused heavily on the kidnapping and sacrifice of the African people and was very hard to read at times.

My second is that the book was a little angsty. The main character is all about this ghost girl and can't focus on anything else--to the point of being unable to be polite to peers while out with them. My third is that no one seems to understand how this athame thing works. It is apparently able to be co-opted by evil beings and used to enslave ghosts instead of free them. And though they solved that in the last book, who's to say it won't happen again? The Order is creepy and (I'm sorry, Cas is right that they are a cult) seems to be focused on the blade like it's their meaning for living. But no one has actually had contact with it for years and it seems to have nothing to do with them. What a pointless existence they live. :) I thought Jesmine (spelling unknown since I just heard it all) was an interesting character with shady beginnings and unknown motivations. She seems to be the only one in the cult with half a brain. I do believe that more thought should have been given to the others that the evil dude and the knife had killed since they all knew the knife had been used by the bad guy all that time. No one wondered about the innocent souls or even his Dad! I think I would have been okay stopping after the first book and saying "They all lived happily ever after" to myself. ...more

The first half was a bit difficult to get into, but he second half was more fast-paced and plotty. :) I liked the magic training and the fights. I disliked how much smarter, faster, and stronger the Titans were. It was ridiculous how many times they outfoxed the Magi. And how many of them are there?! One of the fights had a general just sacrificing her own people and they were all gladly running up to be the next to die. I get patriotic feelings, but this just felt cult-like. The Ryders were featured less in this one, which meant I spent less time wondering how they had enough food for them and where they kept them and such. Then ending is jarring and a total cliff-hanger, so I am glad I didn't get into this series until number 3 was out. The characters all seemed to do 180's (some several times). All the relationships are toast and the reader is glad about it since they are all just terrible to each other. I thought it was interesting how both Amari and Inan ended up exactly like their parents and messing things up royally. Don't they know that royalty is soooo old-fashioned? (view spoiler)[I honestly could have strangled Inan for being so stupid at the end. He goes through his angst and finally does the right thing, but just leaves his mom drugged on the floor? Doesn't chain her up or kill her or anything? Just expects her to not be trouble anymore? I completely think he is an idiot. Amari and her war crimes are no better. I guess Inan is right when he says the problem is the royal family. I concur. (hide spoiler)]...more

There were incredible amounts of detail for things I didn't care too much about and little detail about the things I did! For instance, I'm still unclear what happened to the boy in her past that made her such an outcast, though it was mentioned in almost every chapter. I kept putting the book down and coming back to it later as there was no urgency for me to find out anything.

I think it's because meals are an act of optimism. Only the dead don't eat.
I've heard this sentiment in several action movies. The heroes are always asked how they can eat at a time like this. In this book, the hero speaks of eating dinner as something that is life affirming. Maybe that's why we eat meals at events. ...more
