I guess that's all you need with a book sometimes!
I would especially recommend this to Chinese-Americans -- I'm Chinese but not (4.5 stars) Absolutely loved this. Quiet, poignant, beautifully written.
I would especially recommend this to Chinese-Americans -- I'm Chinese but not American, and everything about this book made me simultaneously want to cry and nod. And ultimately, is this not about how great a mother's love for her child can be?
(If Lisa Ko and Celeste Ng join forces, the world would be amaaazing. Just saying.)...more

If you didn't think anyone could write hilarious chick lit with a side of murder mystery and exploration of issues like domestic abuse and single parenthood, think again!
I can't believe I had no problem keeping track of all the characters. They're all so incredibly realistic and uniquely their own person, that it really isn't difficult going from one POV to the other. I couldn't recommend this enough if you're looking for something light but still thought-provoking - this kept me up past 4am. I'm definitely picking up more of Moriarty's books. (She is sooo worth the hype.)
Thought process of how to rate this: -Maybe I'll give this 4 stars? -But I liked this so much I can't think of anything I particularly didn't like?? -WhaThought process of how to rate this: -Maybe I'll give this 4 stars? -But I liked this so much I can't think of anything I particularly didn't like?? -What will Louisa2 or Louisa3 or Louisa398 think of this book? -Pretty sure it's worth 5 stars in every parallel universe!
It took me this long to finish only because uni has resumed kicking my butt. But this is 100% one of the best books I've read all year. And I've read a Brandon Sanderson series, so it must be good. :')...more

If you like psychological thrillers, this is the one for you. I'm not saying it wasn't slightly predictable, but the pacing and structure are so well done you'd be hard-pressed not to be impressed anyway, hence my 5-star rating. The twists in this could rival an F1 race track. And talk about an off-the-charts creep factor.
I AM STILL BUZZING FROM READING THIS!! What can I even read now?!...more

Like, pretty much the only quibble I have is that maybe the ending feels a little rushed, but overall I loved this to bits! A much better retelling than The Wrath and the Dawn, I can tell you that.
The writing is evocative and gorgeous, the main character strong and smart (her love for her sister was fiercely wonderful too), the story feministic and wonderfully subversive of the original One Thousand and One Nights tale. I've probably used too many adjectives in this short review already, so I'll just add this: The gorgeous cover is, by far, very much representative of the book's contents.
CAN I MARRY THIS PLEASE UGH.
If you haven't gathered by now, read this! Seriously. What are you waiting for???...more

Protagonist with a good head on her shoulders (and she does track and field *cries in joy*), male lead who is kind of trope-y at the beginning but turns out to be a great fit and bad boy turned good, and most importantly, a heartwarming relationship between the MC and her dad. Family is an important part of Annie's life, and most NAs don't emphasise that enough.
Do I want a novella with Annie's dad and Savannah? Or something with Lenny in it? Hell yes. I liked one of Julie Cross's earlier YAs, so you betcha I'm picking up more of her books too. I may have found a new favourite author....more
