Would be really interesting in conjunction with books about photography/photographers or other women who loved nature. The childlike illustrations are joyful and a good match for the story. Eager to further their friendship, Eddy leaps from his fishbowl only to find that his friend is a cat and he can't live outside his bowl. Will this be the end for Eddy? The author avoids the dark ending and creates a wonderful story of dramatic irony in a visually compelling picture book. I love this book....more

The text is pretty accessible and follows the images in a way that is good for readers less comfortable with reading comics. A little boy named Bruin goes on a walk with his mom and his baby on a path called Bear Creek. Bruin is desperate to see a bear -- but sees lots of other things instead. Readers will love that there is a family of bears there the whole time, just following at a safe distance. The illustrations are a lot of fun and really sell the story. But I will say the style doesn't quite speak to me. Still, it is undeniable that crowds young and old will love this story which really sells a childhood experience....more

I really like the novel The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, and I think that the premise of pack horse librarians is always going to be fascinating -- but this book misses the mark for me. The illustrations are nice, showing the land, the people, and the animals in the Kentucky hills. The story itself is even charming, but there is so much text in this book it feels almost exclusively for adults who already know about the Pack Horse Library project and want to share it with their children -- which is not necessarily bad. I just was hoping for a picture book that could be shared with young readers more easily and this I don't think can. ...more

Really and truly, I did. Maybe I'm just too old, but I really hated how the information in this book was presented. I didn't like the alliterative nicknames for everything, and I think it made the book seem like it was for a much younger audience than it should be given the length. The information is interesting, and the comic panels are fun, and the gross facts are really gross (that's a good thing). But wow I did not like the way this information was presented....more
