This book is very reminiscent of the classics, and follows the traditional Greek tragedy storyline. I wasn't sure what to expect from this book at first. I thought it would be a rehash of King Minos and the Minotaur, but after starting this book I found that to be a small plotline to the overall journey of Ariadne and what happens after the events in Crete. I really liked the themes of sisterhood throughout, but did find myself asking, "where is the plot going?.." until the very end when the drama really amped up and I found myself racing to finish.
I do want to mention that I was getting very similar Circe vibes. I'm not familiar with Ariadne's story after she leaves Crete with Theseus, but I saw many of the same themes/plot points in this book that I did in Circe... Would love to see some more opinions about this book! I find that Greek mythology is problematic in itself, so I'm wondering if anyone else loved/hated this.
How can I even describe how good this book is in a cohesive review???
First of all, thank you so much for the ARC!
Beasts of Prey is everything we want How can I even describe how good this book is in a cohesive review???
First of all, thank you so much for the ARC!
Beasts of Prey is everything we want in a fantasy- whirlwind action, with loveable (non-royal) MCs, and a sprinkle of romance. My favorite piece of this book is that it's set in the jungle. It gave me major Jungle Cruise/ Jumanji vibes. I found the magic system easy to understand, and I really loved the lore that was spread throughout this book.
It's so easy to get sucked into the story & writing, I felt like I couldn't put this down for even a second. AND THE PLOT TWISTS!!! Omg. So freaking good. AND THAT ENDING!!!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I first picked this book up, but it's safe to say I was blown away (and I think I found my new book boyfriend). I had such a good time with this one, and can't wait to read the next in this series!!
Would highly recommend for my YA fantasy readers- especially if you're into true journey/ adventure books!!
It's a 5 ⭐️ for me! *read on audio, received the ARC from NetGalley*

I was originally drawn to this book because of how it was marketed- a Get Out x Gossip Girl mystery/thriller combination. I had no idea the scope of this book!!
Ace of Spades follows two POVs- Devon, a musical genius and soon to be Julliard student, and Chiamaka, the Queen of Niveus Private Academy, who's got a first class ticket to medical school. In their senior year, both students have risen to the top of the class and ultimately plan to stay there, until someone anonymously starts sending out cryptic texts and videos revealing secrets the two never thought would come to surface. To find out the origin of this anonymous voice, Devon and Chiamaka must learn to work together or lose everything.
I LOVED this book so much!! It's been a long time since I felt like I could gush about a YA book and confidently say it is a five star, but this book is a FIVE STAR BABY!!! Not only is this book thrilling, but also the mystery & plot twists were everything!! I was so engrossed experiencing it on audio, and absolutely loved the storytelling. Ace of Spades talks race/racism, and classism (among other topics which we won't spoil) in such a real way that I was convinced this was based on a true story. I also loved the LGBTQ rep and how damn normal it was just to love and be loved (though obviously this isn't a romance y'all I was still swooning)!!
This book opened the door to the question: could this actually happen in the world we live in today?
Faridah also has one of the best author's notes I've ever read. I cried hearing it from her own voice. I highly recommend sticking around in the audio to hear it. Overall this book is compelling, fast-paced, more mystery than thriller and hard to put down. Highly recommend!!

Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE needs to read this book. Whether you are considering asexuality or if you just want to learn more about 5 ⭐️ for me!!
Everyone, and I do mean EVERYONE needs to read this book. Whether you are considering asexuality or if you just want to learn more about it, this book nurtures learning and easy comprehension for most reading levels. Chen uses well thought out research/ discussions to peel back layers and touch on the complex topics of sexuality, romance, and relationships- and how our perspectives can and should change on these topics in time. As with most things, I thought I already had an idea in my head of what asexuality is, but after reading this book I feel so much more informed! This is exactly the kind of literature everyone needs to self-educate themselves.
I can't recommend ACE enough. Like I said, I think everyone needs to pick this up, and take time to read and comprehend the text. I took extensive notes, tabbed, underlined... and I still think I could pick it back up and learn more from another complete re-read.
I could rant and rave about it, but all in all- pick it up for yourself and see how much your perspective changes from the moment you pick up this book to the moment you hit the last page. I promise you won't regret it.
I think this may be my new favorite audiobook. No scratch that, I think this is my new favorite romance book of 2021.
What a f5⭐️ on audio- 1.25x speed
I think this may be my new favorite audiobook. No scratch that, I think this is my new favorite romance book of 2021.
What a freaking surprise! This book is everything I wanted in a romance- the cute moments, relatable characters, DRAMA, and an epilogue that actually makes sense. I liked The Kiss Quotient, but in this book, it seemed like Hoang’s writing was on a whole other level!! I was expecting to like it, but in all honestly I LOVED IT. Not a ton of steam, which I’m okay with, BUT THE STEAM WE DID GET WAS TOP DAMN NOTCH!!! I would love for someone to love me the way Khai loves Esme… it’s just ...more
