˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ First, I want to say that Brittany Pressley - what. Omg she did such an amazing job narrating -she carried much of this book for me!
The story picks up right where the first book left off and I was effortlessly pulled right back into this world. Nora Roberts does an exceptional job at world building and creating such realistic and well-rounded characters!
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ I did feel like this one moved a little slower in terms of pacing. I was also hoping to get more information regarding the plot, but this installment didn't move along much in terms of the main storyline, so I was a little disappointed with that.
This is a great series to pick up during the autumn months, if you're looking for something spooky but not actually scary with a haunted mansion and ghosts - spirits and magic.
This is a very vague review - Apologies... avoiding spoilers for an ongoing series can be a challenge. ...more

We follow our FMC, Bristol. Her and her sisters live in the small town of Bowskeep. They have lost both of their parents, and are struggling, but trying their best in life. Trying to make ends meet by selling their father's artwork and working minimum wage jobs.
A mysterious aunt surfaces out of the blue and the news of her father being alive sets Bristol on a new path that’s quite literally out of her world. Bristol starts receiving mysterious letters from an aunt that she’s never heard of before.
Against her better judgment, Bristol goes to meet with the aunt and soon discovers that significant parts of her life have been a lie, and her father may not even be dead. Bristol travels to a magical land, full of danger, fae, and monsters, and things get even more mysterious.
I've gotta be really honest - the audiobook narration by Brittany Pressley really gave me the nudge a few times which really helped get me through the book. She delivers great voice and pitch changes, with fun accents thrown in, that make the story pleasing to the ear.
This would have taken me much longer to get through if I didn't have the audio to pull me through. It's not that it was boring, but there were some areas that felt drawn out and I found myself not staying as engaged.
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ While there's really nothing new that an avid fantasy reader will find in this story - it's comforting and enjoyable. I love a good portal fantasy featuring a human girl tossed into a magical fae land.
˚₊· ͟͟͞͞➳❥ The writing and the world building are excellent - I think this is a very solid start to a new series.
This book is full of secrets and betrayal and fae and gods and shifters. It's got hidden identities and enemies to lovers that try so hard not to fall for each other.
It's a romantic fantasy, but it's also epic fantasy. Its full of magic and whimsy and it's got a morally gray shadow daddy who likes to make himself invisible and sneak around with our best girl.
I do recommend this to readers who are looking for a fantasy romance that isn't over the top with spice or romance since it's a subplot and a world that is easy to keep up with.

When I say struggle- I mean I literally sighed, bitched, complained and dreaded each time I picked up this book. I can't remember the last time I looked at my progress percentage so often in a book and damn did it move incredibly slow. I thought it was never going to end.
Had it been an epub copy and not an audio- I would have given up for sure.

I may or may not be reading this on the side of all of my other current reads. Goodreads unofficial- maybe?
I am so excited that the fourth and final book in this series will be out fall of this year! The wait won't be as excruciating as it was for book 3. This book is so formulaic that it made me cringe. Poor little human girl finds herself trapped in the Fae lands. She must compete in a trial in order to be set free.

I've had many issues with this series after book 1 and I had high hopes that book 3 would rectify some of them, but unfortunately for me it still just didn't work.
The positive note that I have is - the last 20% of this book was a great showcase of Thea - but I feel like it was too little too late.
I think the root of my issues all began in book 1- there's a lot of tension and build up to the FMC (Thea) and the MMC's (Wilder) relationship. In book 1 after all of the tension and tip toeing around there's an impulsive sudden sexual encounter, literally in the last 15-20ish%.
From there we jump into book two. I feel like the author never dives into the emotional connection between these two. Vows & Ruin is literally these two banging it out non stop, but I was personally left feeling lost as to why they feel this undying love for each other?
Because you just said so? Because the author told me so?
A huge part of why I love to read is the feeling I get, the emotions I experience. I can't get there if you just simply shove the two main characters bodies together and say 'they love each other so they fuck.' LOL. Wild.
Book 3 takes place a year after book two ends and I thought it was going rather well until it wasn't. Scheuerer managed to find a way to shove in more spice even while the two were separated.
Listen, I know I sound like I'm really just harping on the spice - and I LOVE SPICE. But not when there is SUPPOSED to be emotions there and I can't pick up on a single one of them. This is the author TELLING me but NOT SHOWING me.
Not only that, but this relationship gave me severe whiplash in this installment- more than I've experienced with them in the previous books.
There is too much that doesn't add up here with the story as a whole- I will just say that to avoid spoilers. Plot holes, let's just say plot holes.
Also, generally speaking - I feel like the story is getting dragged out at this point. I've lost interest, there is simply not enough lor, magic or battles going to for me to give a damn anymore.
Helen, this isn't Game of Thrones, there is not enough substance here to have pulled out 4 books. My interest in this story has actually declined with each page.
Highly doubt I'll read the last book - I already feel I can predict what will happen and I just don't care.
