first off, why is “enemies to lovers” in the title? this really wasn’t that imo.
starting off with this book I immediately noticed the writing, it wasfirst off, why is “enemies to lovers” in the title? this really wasn’t that imo.
starting off with this book I immediately noticed the writing, it was overall very repetitive. I think the same phrase was repeated like five times in one singular paragraph. another thing I noticed was the abrupt pov switches that would occur mid scene which just confused me. not off to a great start.
after that is when the main characters meet! they are in the same room, find out they are mates, and the fmc immediately starts thinking about their future together and just sounds quite desperate (mind you, they are complete strangers, they’ve never even spoken before, maybe a mere shared glance at most) while the mmc doesn’t want her, which is understandable as he has a lover. when his lover kisses him, the fmc has a breakdown and runs off.
she asks the mmc why he is with his lover… yeah. this just made no sense to me and I found it quite embarrassing for her, I’m pretty sure she knew he had a lover. anyways the mmc rejects her! this is all happening in one chapter, not looking great so far.
after rejecting her, he makes out with her! yeah you read that right. she gets her hopes up and then he rejects her again.
omg I completely forgot to mention something so I’m adding it here really quick: the fmc wants to change herself so that the mmc will like her which made me so mad because he is not worth it!
you can probably guess how the rest of the book went but here are some more things that irked me:
the mmc has made it very clear he does not want her right? yet he wants to control what she’s wearing and who she’s seeing. yeah.
here’s a quote: “Your ‘assistance’ is best appreciated in the kitchen. Leave the room, woman.”
???
since a rejected bond could lead to death, the fmc is getting weaker and she needs to find someone else to live, so she does! the mmc calls her a whore, here are more quotes:
“What you are doing is disgusting, disgraceful, in poor taste, and demeaning even for you.” “What the hell is that supposed to mean?” “I won’t have any more crass behavior with my men. Do you understand?” “Or else what?” “Or else I’ll toss you into the gutter from whence you crawled with only those rags on your back.”
then proceeds to tell her not to cry. yeah…what the fuck.
oh guess what! he wants her now! here’s what he had to say:
“It is me you get and you’d best prepare yourself to accept that for the rest of your miserable fucking life.”
“I am leaving my kingdom, my home, my position and everything I have ever fucking known to be with you, you ungrateful wench!”
the villain of this story ended up being nicer to the fmc than any other male characters to be honest, like?
overall, the characters fell flat, the story fell flat, and I did not enjoy this at all. this book wasn’t for me and these are all my opinions. I have seen other readers enjoy this book based on reviews so maybe this book is for you! sadly I can’t say the same.

“Hope is a strange thing, don’t you think? It can pull you out of your darkest thoughts, but also leave you destroyed if that hope turns into nothing greater. That’s when we must lean on the people who care for us the most. They hold us steady and do the hoping for us when we no longer can.”

“But we’re two songs joined. And there’s a word for that. A harmony.”
— thank you to netgalley, harpercollins and the author for the arc in exchange for an honest review!
— before i start off this review, i’d like to give a warning to the younger readers out there, one of the generes in this book is said to be young adult. however, with the mature themes discussed in this book i would say this is better suited for reader 18 and above.
in this world there are people with telepathic gifts called songlight; but this world is an unforgiving one. a world ruled my men, filled with misogyny, homophobia, violence at every corner and in an ongoing war. people with songlight are forced to hide it, they’re seen as unhuman.
this book had me completely immersed since the very beginning, with five different povs, we see how each one views the world they live in. i found myself constantly rooting for our fmc, i felt infuriated for her, angry for her, for having to live in such a cruel world.
“Her love is the most precious thing in this whole sorry universe.”
“If I die now, I have loved her, and that has to be enough.”
“My whole body aches for everything we could have been.”
one thing i can’t wait to see more of is elsa and rye. their story was cut too short and i can’t wait to see how it continues in the upcoming books! i’ll patiently be waiting for book two and it’s definitely becoming one of my anticipated releases!
“It’s hard to talk, without condemning myself as a traitor because I’ve been taught my whole life that you’re my enemies.”
there was so much at stake, so much violence was constantly happening which still has me processing everything even now. everyone is taught these horrible things from day one, they see the wrong things as right which makes change difficult.
“I’m in a whirlwind of confusion because, for the first time in my life. I feel like I belong.”
the “enemies” in this book are painted as these horrible and cruel people but in reality they are the good ones. I can’t wait to see how this story progresses and i will be rooting for them and a free world every step of the way.
“Something extraordinary is happening. We are no longer powerless.”...more
