I don't think I've been this excited from a blurb since Th1rt3en! If you know of any crazy ones please let me know!!
Pick this up if you enjoy/don’t mind:
- Drama with a side of mystery (does get a tad soapy but not too bad)
Thoughts:
Overall it was ok. Its not a bad book but nothing ground breaking. My low rating is because I went in with different expectations so I was pretty disappointed.
I enjoyed the first third more because I was curious about the premise and tagline until I realised it wasn’t what I thought...If you’re on the fence about reading this and don’t mind a spoiler in that you’ll know what not to expect then read the spoiler below. It would take the surprise out of finding out what Bridget is doing (or not doing haha). If I had known I wouldn’t have read this book.
What I didn’t enjoy: (view spoiler)[ Was anyone else somewhat annoyed about the blurb? Or maybe it's my fault for jumping to conclusions. I did read the blurb again and I guess I misread it to have hidden agendas. I had fully expected some sort of revenge plot, or at least a hidden motive for Bridget to marry Tom. Being in Bridget’s head we learn that that's not the case and she was actually happy, in love and was trying to get approval from everyone. I completely lost interest because it was just too ridiculous. Or maybe that's meant to be the twist...there was no revenge plot lol!!! (hide spoiler)]
I’m all about crazy books but this was too unbelievable and far-fetched! The relationships really weirded me out. Bridget married her son’s murderer, Tom. She even introduced him to her daughter in law and grandson, killer of their husband and father?! (view spoiler)[ I feel the book needed to explore Bridget’s and Tom’s time together more so that it could be more believable (if that's even possible). (hide spoiler)]
There were multiple points of views and timelines. However they weren’t really delved into deep enough to reveal much or to learn something. The most I learned was that people were keeping secrets haha....more

What's your favourite cosy mystery? Not sure if it's just this series or the genre that's not for me
What I enjoyed
• Compared to the first one, the pace was faster and there was more happening. The first 30% kept me interested as there were gradual reveals.
• I liked how the different subplots intertwined in the end.
What I didn't enjoy
• There wasn’t enough setting around the Coopers Chase retirement home and the Thursday Murder Club gathering like there was in book 1. The characters Ron, Ibrahim, Elizabeth and Joyce sounded similar, if their dialogue was mixed up I wouldn’t notice.
• Why does it switch between third person to first person Joyce’s diary? A shift in writing style makes me expect some sort of development or reveal. However her chapters were incredibly boring and there wasn’t anything new to learn. But for people who enjoy the charm of these characters then Joyce’s chapters would be entertaining.
• There was a lot of meandering and tangents that I kept on losing focus. Beyond the 30% mark or so, the investigation and reveals were light and didn’t hook me in.
Recommendation Overall I would recommend this if you enjoy light mysteries with humour, don’t take themselves too seriously and don’t mind some tangents. If you liked book 1 then I think you'll likely enjoy this too! :)

You will like this if you want:
• A very light read
• Some humour
• Fun characters with a side of mystery
What I didn’t like:
• Overall it was boring, snail pace and not much actually happened in between the few major events. In fact 90% of the novel felt like meandering fillers.
• I was never immersed, had zero interest in the case which was hard to follow and had to re-read passages because I lost focus.
• There were too many characters and I lost track. This alternated between first person point view of Joyce and in third person point of view with airtime for the 4 members of the Thursday Murder Club, the 2 detectives, suspects and other side characters. There wasn’t any deep dive into any of them so I didn’t connect with anyone.
• I enjoyed part 1 as the book dived straight into it so I was hooked and interested from the get go.
• The characters were li3.5 Stars
What I enjoyed:
• I enjoyed part 1 as the book dived straight into it so I was hooked and interested from the get go.
• The characters were likeable and realistic, especially Hannah. I enjoyed the story from her point of view because I was able to connect with her. She's a normal person in an unlikely situation and was so out of her depth. Her thoughts, reactions and actions felt realistic and she didn’t do anything that was so far-fetched or crazy.
• The relationship development between Hannah and her step daughter Bailey was wholesome. At the start, Bailey was an annoying and bratty teenager, however I enjoyed how they began to lean on and support each other. And in the end Bailey called her mum.
What I didn't enjoy:
• After part 1 I felt pretty neutral for the rest of the book. The investigation was boring, it felt like they were trying to find a needle in a haystack. The discoveries felt so forced because they were so random, grasping at the distant past hoping to spark memories and recalling everyday conversations.
• There was no real tension or urgency to find Owen. For example, there was no indication that anyone was in immediate trouble, the detectives made an appearance at the start only and were nonexistent for the rest so they didn’t add more pressure. Essentially nothing felt time critical.
• The reveal about Owen’s true past was anticlimactic as there was no mystery built around it. There were little to no clues so it could have been anything and I would have felt the same - Neutral rather than surprised.
Not what I expected:
• The genre. This is not so much a thriller or suspense but more of a slow paced domestic mystery. I was never at the edge of my seat and after part 1 I wasn’t dying to know what happens next. The dual timeline focused more on the relationships and didn’t build up any mystery. I was expecting to see more bread crumbs and clues.
Eyebrow raising moments: (view spoiler)[ • Tobias Cookman talked about why Owen was the worst student he had ever had and I found it hilarious and ridiculous when he said that Owen had been failing because of a popular girl in class. I thought WHAT?! When I look back at my own university days, I would be surprised if professors could name all the students in their class, let alone know who was popular with the boys? Owen had also told/emailed him that he was failing because he was in love. I just thought...wow...there was a time in my life where I almost failed all 4 subjects (P’s get degrees haha), maybe I should’ve emailed my professors my life problems and seen if they’d have any sympathy for me. I can’t imagine any student doing that! I felt that they had a student - teacher relationship so I found this whole part really weird.
• If Grady wanted to get Hannah and Bailey into witness protection why couldn't he have told Hannah the truth from the start?
• The vague notes left behind. Surely he had an extra 1 minute to write a bit more.
• When Hannah hung up on Evelyn. I found that extremely rude considering she had bent the rules to help them lol! Talk about being used and thrown away! (hide spoiler)]
You will like this if: You love stories that are more focused on family drama and relationships rather than the thrills or mystery build up.
Apparently I read this years ago and gave it a 2 star rating. I do not remember doing that haha but I can see why because it is very long Rating ⭐⭐⭐.5
Apparently I read this years ago and gave it a 2 star rating. I do not remember doing that haha but I can see why because it is very long and slow paced. I decided to read this because I saw the tv show and loved it, in fact this is one of the rare occasions where I liked the tv adaptation more than the book. It was hard to rate because I was comparing it to the tv show so I couldn’t help but to compare the shortcomings to it.
Having watched the TV show, bumping this up to 4 stars.
