I listened to the audiobook version of this title, read by Samuel James.
This is a thoroughly engrossing and enjoyable story. Really interesting and hard to put down. A small, underestimated Ethics team are asked to investigate the accounts of a large company, looking for anomalies. Simple, right? Oh no, not by a long way…
Initially, you believe that this will be a straightforward police procedural tale and be pretty pedestrian, but it really isn’t! It’s a kind of white collar spy craft with personality. I thoroughly enjoyed this tale and now have to go back and buy book 1 before progressing to books 3 and 4!
Based in Bath and Oxford, this is an enjoyable Whodunnit, although not a straightforward one.
I enjoyed the narrator, even though I’m sure that he may not have nailed all of the dialects. It certainly didn’t distract me from following the story.
I highly recommend this story, but start from book 1! (Different narrator)....more

I am definitely not the demographic for this and neither do I have any members of my family who are, so this review is based quite frankly on what a prosaic adult, who’s not a Harry Potter fan, but can and did enjoy the Hunger Games series, got out of it.
I think that this tale is trying to be too mystical, without actually being too engaging and therefore not credible. But, what child wants credibility? They want magic and adventure and this story has it! In my opinion, it doesn’t cross over to be thoroughly engaging as some YA titles, but I don’t think that it aspires to that. For its targeted audience, I’m sure that it’s a fun adventure.
My thoughts on the narrator (Simon Aitchison), are mixed. I don’t think that he nailed all of the characters well, but I’m not sure how easy it is for a grown man to portray a handful of children…...more

This is a clever, weird and oddly compelling story. I’m not sure what genre it is, because it’s not one that I’m familiar with, but having listened to this, I would certainly investigate other titles by this author.
It’s a slow burn narrative about life in prison, from the pov of an inmate who is sentenced to 10 years with the chance of parole after 5. That’s as normal as it gets!
I can’t think how to say anymore without giving spoilers, so I can’t think of the words to encourage you to Just. Read. It!
I listened to the audiobook version of this title, which I was given for free, for an honest review by the narrator, Glynn Holmes Snr who, by the way is just Perfect for this tale. I am glad to have received it because I doubt that I would have come across this title ordinarily and I would have missed out on a really interesting and intriguing story.
Despite it being a slow burn, it was over far too quickly for me. I highly recommend this “Shawshank” tale. (That’s all that you’re getting from me. The title is aptly named). ...more

Probably because of the narrator more so than the easy pace of the story, but I would liken this tale to a Nero Wolfe or Ellery Queen novel. I love those genres, so I really enjoyed this tale. I guessed the bullet immediately, although I didn’t ever remotely guess the perpetrator. Cleverly done.
The narrator, Glynn Holmes Snr, suited the narrative (although surprisingly, he cannot say the word “cupboard”), he had a measured pace which, despite the short chapters (which I loved), kept the story moving, without being dull.
I shall move onto book 3 in due course (if there is one),. I have high hopes for this series. ...more

This was a long, sometimes rambling taleI listened to the audiobook version of this title which I was given for free, in return for an honest review.
This was a long, sometimes rambling tale, with perhaps too much detail. I felt that it took too long to get to the meat of the matter and then, when it did, it was skirted over pretty quickly! Then it dragged on for several chapters in a long drawn out aftermath.
The B story was interesting, but incidental. There was no apparent connection to the main story, so I didn’t really see the relevance of it all…
As for the narrator - I think that he wasn’t best suited for this story, on occasion I couldn’t tell who was narrating! Perhaps someone with more range would have been preferable. Better at a faster narration speed, but still not great!
Notwithstanding the above, the storyline was interesting, very novel and full of little guessed predictions of the future… I really enjoyed those. Even though I couldn’t see the relevance, the whole outer space storyline was interesting, although lacking in direction and depth. It would make an interesting separate novel.
I do, ordinarily, enjoy Science Fiction tales and this one was not too far off from now to make it all highly credible, with the exception of the B Story, this has the potential to be very engrossing, however, both the narrator and the long journey to “The Point”, make this very heavy going. ...more

Her brother did a foolish thing and SHE spent the entire time trying to rectify it - instead of him! Which, of course, she couldn’t with gentility achieve without seeming fast!

I listened to the audiobook version of this title, ably narrated by Karl Jenkinson. I want to say that this is a pedestrian tale of a lost, lonely, broken and unhappy man. But that sounds negative and critical. It isn’t however, it’s descriptive and biographical. (I imagined Neville Watkins character as a little hangdog, in the way that Nicholas Lyndhurst portrays Rodney Trotter in Only Fools and Horses).
Neville really isn’t in a good place when we first encounter him; his wife has just left him for another man (having spent the past countless years cheating on him) and then subsequently getting “laid off” from his banking job on April Fool’s Day, culminating with a “Road Traffic Accident” in a supermarket car park!
Things can only get better, right? Well, not straight away… this is the story of how - dragging and screaming - Neville turns his life around, with a little place from his RTA Nemesis!
This is a Great Story and SO relatable to me. I doubt that I’m as reticent in my interactions as Nigel but I am very keen to not give offence or upset the status quo. This is the story of him navigating life, following his car accident, with the “victim” of the RTA! (Kicking and screaming, kinda).
A more reluctant makeover, is hard to find and that’s what makes this an enjoyable, easy going “coming of age” tale.
I would highly recommend this book. The narration is good and admirably supports this timing, self-effacing character. ...more

This is Book 4 in this series and in my opinion, a far better book (story and narration) than book 3!
Surprisingly (to me), the narration was far superior for the characters in this story, even though the narrators were both the same!
The characters were all great and believable, the protagonists were engaging and likeable. The storyline original and delivered nicely.
I’m beginning to think that the trope for this series is not “just” a Billionaire one, it also seems to be coupled with ex-step siblings… however, I’m not that enamoured with the style of writing to try others in this series - I’ve read better “Billionaire” titles and with far better (consistent) narrators. ...more

I listened to the audiobook version of this title I was given a free copy of this in exchange for my review.
I haven’t read the previous titles in this series (& I don’t know if that makes a difference), but this trope is not really interesting or engaging.
The male lead comes across as arrogant, egocentric and unlikeable, even when you persevere through it. I honestly didn’t see how the relationship (purely sexual) developed into a romantic loving one, because that aspect was never brought out in the telling. All of their encounters were one sex scene after another!
As for the narration. These were not my favourite paring, I didn’t feel as if any (or enough) emotion was put into the narrative. To begin with, the man sounded as if he was doing the voice over for a documentary!! It got better as the tale moved on, but I felt that neither of them helped to drive the story.
This hasn’t been my favourite Billionaire trope. ...more

This is a new genre for me so I leapt at the opportunity to try it out.
Unfortunately, I just couldn’t finish it, it really didn’t grab me. On so many levels the story just didn’t grab me: - The friendships are either edgy or toxic (depending on your take). - Too much foul language (I get that it’s for realism, but I don’t feel comfortable with it). - Excessive detail on the materialistic (interior design, America’s Next Top Model, Top Gear et al). - No depth to the characters.
Perhaps the story picks up and gains traction, but I just couldn’t relate to any aspect of it. Perhaps I’m just too English to get it!
The narrator did a good job, hitting all of the characters, male and female, well. But I just didn’t engage with the story. This is definitely not my genre. ...more

I don’t know if this is the end of the series, the two sisters and 2 brothers of the Allen Abbey are all now accounted for and for Thomas, he has come full circle from the villain to the vicar. The Author’s note at the conclusion seems to indicate that this is it.
Once again, this is an interesting narrative full of great characters, however it is more sedate than the previous two (which, given how we were initially introduced to Thomas in book one, is ironic).
I do like this author’s style of Regency writing and will definitely look for more titles by her. I’m a Georgette Heyer fan and would definitely recommend this series to other Heyerites. I can’t say better than that!

A very well rounded, well written tale. Once again agreeable characters and none gone to waste, don’t overlook the butler!
With so much happening, it was good to see that the protagonist’s actually made time for each other and talked. It was good to see that the insecure one, wasn’t the female, equally good to see people listening to advice given.

I must say that the narrator, Dustin Konrad, did not do this story any justice. The story didn’t fail because of him, but his lack of English (or American), didn’t help. Words like “Greenwich” or “Quay” were beyond him and detracted from the telling. Also, his delivery was slow, plodding even.
The story of itself was good, but not great. I can see why it was aligned with Le Carré, it has the same pace and the same diversity in characters but, because it is a short story, the characters all seem squashed together to quickly play their part so that they could be dispatched to make room for the next character. Therefore, in parts, the story seemed rushed and unfinished.
