It pisses me off, to no end. The whole time, I had the feeling that this book was suffering from the "middle book" syndrome, as it had multiple sub-plots develop, intertwine and resolve, but near the end, around the 80% mark, everything seemed nice and wrapped up, but wait, don't get your hopes up, Taylor shakes everything up and then ends it! She did put a nice little bandaid on it at the end, but still, it hurts that I now have to wait for the next one to resolve all my feelings.
All that said, I loved it. From start to finish, it was a great ride, with lots of dry humor and plenty of excitement. 5 stars!...more
What an absolute blast this was! I was hooked from the very first page and it didn't let up.

World-building
The world has gone to shit, as it so often does, however, for once, it's not humanity's fault. It seems that some weird phenomenom has migrated to our solar system and it's wrecking havoc on our beloved planet. Solid world-building all around, told with great details and empathy.
Characters
There aren't all that many in this book, reminiscent of The Martian. There's our main protagonist, a science bloke once again and there's some people back on earth.
Most of the attention goes to our protagonist however, through whose eyes we get to experience everything, and I really liked him. There was something in his personality that resonated with me, a curiosity to discover, that really drew me in.
Let's not forget our adorable multi-talented eight-legged friend, who made this story all the more memorable. The bond they created felt so real that I actually choked up when they said their goodbyes.
Story
The story isn't very complicated, it's quite straightforward with the occasional bump in the road to keep it going, but it's the characters that drive the emotional attachment.
Writing
Very scientific, just like The Martian, which was greatly appreciated, and always coated with a dry sarcasm that I can very much appreciate.
Conclusion
A simple story, really, but told so very well and narrated excellently by Ray Porter.

The way he thinks and analyzes EVERYTHING resonates with me, as well as his clipped, matter-of-fact way of talking and thinking.
This is the 3rd installment of the Butler-machine and I'm not getting bored of it. Reading this is like falling back in a comfortable rut and I loved every minute of it....more

"Wow" pretty much sums this up for me. After about 50 pages or so, I couldn't put it back down again (and was annoyed whenever I 'had' to)
The Awesome "Wow" pretty much sums this up for me. After about 50 pages or so, I couldn't put it back down again (and was annoyed whenever I 'had' to)
The Awesome bits - Almost all main characters & character building - Almost all of them are instant-lovable. They all feel real and exzibit a specific trait that sets them apart from other novels I've read.
- Amazing world & lore that really comes alive through the writing. A world where the sun is ALWAYS red and ash rains from the sky most of the time is just intriguing.
- Ingenious and outstanding magic system - How do you even come up with something like this?
Mistborn delves into political intrigue, into religion, into the masks people use to hide who they truly are, into superstition and into everyday human emotions. In many ways Mistborn addresses very deep philosophical issues while also being very entertaining. And that in my eyes is the mark of a great writer: a man or woman capable of creating an enjoyable story full of hidden depth. - borrowed from "Jonathan"
- Multiple unexpected plot twists left me wondering how things could ever work out - I actually verbalized a wtf?? at a couple of occasions
The could-have-done-better bits - Pacing makes some crazy jumps, sometimes the story feels like a high speed train and then at times more like a "stroll in the park" with strange bits that don't really make sense to me ((view spoiler)[Vin trying to figure out what to wear to the ball e.g (hide spoiler)])
- Focusing the entire story on 2 main characters (however awesome they may be) seemed like it is only half an effort for each of them. Sanderson could have focussed more on either one of the 2 characters to have a better character in the end. I really feel that we could have gone so much deeper with Kelsier and his twisted emotions and 'sunny' world view, or with Vin and her mental traumas from her times on the street.
Conclusion I thoroughly enjoyed this book, the characters and the world feel real, the writing style is very enjoyable and the whole lore is so intriguing that I just want to continue to delve into it. On to "The Well of Ascension"!...more
