A slow burn that works really well as each half of the couple work through their relationship issues. This high school setting was great and reminded me a lot of my own (good) high school experiences and teachers (and the two teacher who everyone knew were dating [or should be dating], but they kept it on the super DL until they got married a few years after I graduated).
I like having a sexy, fat heroine, though it was a little difficult to tell if she was simply American average (a size 14-16) or actually fat (size 18 or up). I think I remember the author using the word fat a couple of times, but mostly descriptions of the heroine focused on her curves and form fitting clothes. ...more

And I think they handle the weight loss/fitness narrative in a way that keeps it from being fatphobic. Henry is really down on himself for most of the book, but I love the way Reed reassures Henry that he liked him before he started losing weight and encourages Henry to focus on how he feels and what he can accomplish rather than what his weight is.
Anyways, this was charming! I liked the characters! It was perfect to have playing in my one earbud while flying with a wriggly infant!...more

This is the second book I've read where one of the characters is face blind (see: Bone Gap), and it's very fascinating to me. I like the way it was handled here, and I appreciated that Jack doesn't spend a lot of time using Libby's fatness to recognize her. ...more

Every fat person's experiences are different, and I have never been as fat as Gay, but there are some things that are universal. There were many situations throughout this book that resonated with me, moments that I, too, have had as a fat woman in this world, and it was a relief to have another person voice those uniquely fat concerns and know that I am not alone. ...more

I didn't ever feel like Etta and Bianca glorified having an eating disorder, which is definitely something to look out for in books that deal with this topic, but I also don't know how much someone who has been there can relate.
Besides that note, which isn't a complaint, I really enjoyed this book. Etta is a great character, and I love the way Moskowitz deals frankly with her feelings of being bisexual and outside of both hetero- and homosexual spheres, as well as her feelings of alienation and racism due to being a black teen in white-bread America. She felt genuine, and she addressed these topics and concerns without being preachy or heavy-handed.
I will say her stream of consciousness narration was a little hard to follow sometimes, but I just slowed down a little, and read those parts as if I were saying them to myself, which helped. ...more

Add in that I'm pretty sure Willowdean is me at 16, and this was definitely going to be a sure-fire win for me. I love the love interest, I love the family stuff, I love the best friend stuff. I love that her dad is literally never mentioned.
