Though, I am now realizing that she probably would have been in the salon all day to get braids done, rather than just half a day, with time to go shopping.
At any rate, she's so awesome. Aditi is SO AWESOME. Michelle wasn't really in this one, Christina makes terrible life choices but is otherwise okay, and Elli is still super immature and mildly annoying.

I could feel the hot, sweaty LA air through Disabato's writing. I don't know that I would say I "really liked" any of the characters; they're all too cool for me, but the dynamics between them were really believable and relatable.
I do have to say that depictions of the kind of casual drug use that is on display here make me really uncomfortable (all the time, not just here), and while it's clear that Eve is a hot mess, the drugs and alcohol are never condemned as perhaps exacerbating her issues. ...more

He's super relatable, and the whole book reminded me of the uncertainty of love and dating in high school and how everyone feels hella awkward and weird and is just looking for connection. I also played flute in band and was in theater in high school, and I really enjoyed seeing a character with those same hobbies (and feelings towards both, lbh). I'm so glad we got to see her form strong friendships with other girls and figure out how to maintain her friendship with Dre.
My only complaint is that because she spends so much time fighting or otherwise not talking to Eli, I didn't feel like we got to know him as well as Dre or even Kai, and it was a little hard to see why she liked him so much when she had two other VERY EXCELLENT choices available to her. ...more

I like that we got a section focused on each of the main characters, and it was fun to see them all at the end as adults. I LOVED that this was mostly about the team being friends and witches and any romance is fairly secondary to the main story of them working together to become a winning field hockey team. I loved the way these characters supported each other, even if they had their Mean Girl, cliquey tendencies occasionally.
And it was great that we got this story set in the '80s through a modern lens, looking back - there are a few instances of this, but one that sticks out the most clearly is when the team is talking about their first times having sex, and one of the girls says he boyfriend pressured her into it. The narrator comments that at the time it was just considered "bad sex" but now it would rape.

I read this to decide between putting this in to Children's vs YA graphic novel section, and it really could go either way.
