Though, I am now realizing that she probably would have been in the salon all day to get braids done, rather than just half a day, with time to go shopping.
At any rate, she's so awesome. Aditi is SO AWESOME. Michelle wasn't really in this one, Christina makes terrible life choices but is otherwise okay, and Elli is still super immature and mildly annoying.

We had a great discussion, and I am happy for the excuse to re-visit this book. The monster/old god did not bother me as much as it did the first time, and I am happily upping this to 5 stars.
I love that 99% of the characters are women, and we get to see so many different representations of good women, bad women, ambiguous women (which, let's be real, most of them fall into this category). I look forward to the second volume.
Previously read: 06/26/2016 First, the art is fucking gorgeous in this. It's amazing, and I love it, and I love the muted, sepia-ish colors used throughout.
I love all the different representations of people you get in this story. It's so rare to see a non-white main character or a main character missing a limb, and here you have BOTH. AT THE SAME TIME! And she's a total badass! It's wonderful.
I love the talking cats with lots of tails, and I enjoyed the history lessons in the back of each issue from the professor cat.
The story sucked me in, and I can't wait to find out the mystery surrounding the main character's mom. The only thing that kept this from being 5 stars is that the black, blobby, eye monster was just a touch too weird for me. I totally recommend this anyways, and I would like to re-read it in one go, now that I have all six issues of the comic, just to really get into the flow of the story.

I finally broke down and bought the digital versions for my tablet, and wow is it a nice reading experience, especially with the magazine issue, so I could zoom in on the text.

This is a slow burn, raising a baby together romance, and I really enjoyed reading it. The characters are all well written and interesting, and I'm really looking forward to reading more books in this series.
I do have a very minor nit to pick, though: the two main characters like to verbally spar and tease each other, but occasionally I had a hard time following their conversation and knowing what they were talking about.
(It took me forever to read because I was reading the physical book, and it's very difficult for me to find time with two hands free to sit down with an actual book and not my Kindle. Every time I picked it up, though, I was very sucked into the story.)...more

This one is especially timely as one of the main characters is working on criminal justice reform. Guillory handles that deftly, explaining the ways our justice system as it currently stands actively harms people, especially BIPOC, without ever coming off as preachy or heavy handed.
I really enjoyed watching Olivia's female friendships develop in her new home (female friendships always!), and Max's friendship with Wes was wonderfully portrayed. I'm looking forward to Wes's future book and Jamila's (*fingers crossed*)!

It was WONDERFUL to see two bisexual main characters who are open about their sexualities and their partner isn't threatened by it.
Weatherspoon writes a sexy book, and this one has a bit more flavor than vanilla, which is something to keep in mind if you prefer your romances a little less sizzling.
One thing that I have enjoyed about both of Weatherspoon's books is that the characters have really good communication. Generally, the main characters are open and honest with each about how they're feeling and what they want, and I love that. My least favorite romance trope is This Problem Could Be Solved With One Adult Conversation, and it's always so refreshing to see the opposite.

I have a couple of complaints, but they didn't take away from my enjoyment too much: 1. I hate the way the hero keep referring to the heroine as "sweetheart." That's a term of endearment that I have a hard time hearing as anything other than sarcastic or otherwise not sincere.
2. The heroine is supposed to be fat, I think, or possibly just "plus sized." She occasionally refers to her curves, but I think she's probably like a size 12, and the way she and other characters talk about it comes off as a weeeeeeeee bit fatphobic. It sort of feels like she's apologizing for not being a size 4 every time it's mentioned, and I don't like that.
Also, be warned that the very first chapter opens with sex. ...more
