This was very much a compelling, action-packed Rick Riordan and a series I had very much warmed to over time, it’s just I felt this ending was a bit rushed and everything worked out so perfectly for everyone, I mean there was a lot of danger, but it just seemed a bit like the author just wanted everything done with and I didn’t feel like there was enough of a build up to the ending especially considering what happened and what was at stake.
Don’t get me wrong this was still a very well written and exciting read with well developed characters and it was really fun watching the dynamics unfold between everyone and the adventures they went on in the end were still great fun to read about. I kind of felt as this was a series ender that things should have had a lot of build up towards the final goal and when the final goal was achieved there should have been more of an aftermath with the world and all of the characters and while the author didn’t exactly abruptly end things, it was still rather a quick ending that kind of left me thinking, well that’s it?
As I have said the scope in this whole series was quite big and in the previous books we got a lot of anticipation for the final battle with Gaia as well as a lot of character development revolving around the prophecy of seven. I’m not saying this wasn’t realised just that I don’t think all the potential was used in this ending because as mentioned it just seemed at the end like the author rushed things too much and just wanted to get things over and done with. The final battle did feel more than a little too easy and I won’t lie when I say I was expecting more of an epic finale with Octavian considering what he did and what he became, though I suppose in its own ways the way the author dealt with things was satisfying in its own rights. I also wish there had been chapters told from Percy’s point of view too, that was a bit of a bummer and I don’t quite understand even now why the author did that…
Despite my disappointment in the way the author decided to handle things in this ending, I have only deducted half a star because I still very much enjoyed my time with all these characters and all the mythological wonders the author wove in so effortlessly. All the characters in these books are so well thought of and being on their journey with them makes them genuinely feel like close friends so it is a little sad to be finally saying goodbye to them, but it has been great fun all in all ...more
Another fantastic mythological adventure by Rick Riordan! I can also see that this book has the highest general rating in all this series on Goodreads which is something I’m not sure I get entirely as I enjoyed the previous book just as much as I enjoyed this one as there are plenty of epic action filled scenes in all these books as well as good humour and fun characters.
If I had to choose my favourite characters from this series they would have to be Percy (of course) and Leo as both of them know how to make light of any situation even when the odds are stacked against them. The relationships between all the characters are also well done as the author manages to catch all the feelings and emotions they go through on their journeys although the reason I’m not giving this five stars has a little to do with this also.
In this book towards the middle, I found it a bit repetitive and a little far fetched (well their whole adventure is far fetched) that the characters faced mortal danger and then they took it lightly all the time that they could be killed horribly at any moment and then they overcame each obstacle. I can see other reviewers have written about this in reviews of the previous book where the characters face obstacles and then they all overcome them and are on their way again like nothing happened almost.
Despite these aspects making it a little harder to connect with everything, I will still say that Riordan is a damned good writer and he continues to be able to surprise me with more mythological wonders and brilliant action scenes. I mean, I will also add that in these books it is obvious they are intended for a slightly younger audience because while there are fights, the stories’ and outcomes are not gruesome which does work well in most senses as the author is really talented at writing in this fashion, but sometimes I feel that with everything these characters are facing there should be more heartbreak and despair and darker themes. Mind you, the last book is probably going to be an epic explosion of awesome action as I have seen a few reviews on it and lots were blown away by how things ended. Oh exciting!
I will continue to say that this is an exciting series with many well developed mythological aspects and good characters. Despite me sometimes wanting more darker themes, I must also admit that this author has a way of writing that makes the story and everything appeal to all ages! So while these books have their flaws, they are still much recommended reads for anyone who loves a good adventure ...more
