I’m definitely going read more from her....more

This This snapshot of life in the apartment in Bab el-Louk was a good way to kick off my exploration of Egypt for #InvisibleCitiesProject this month. This is described as a ‘noir poem’ but it felt more informed by zine-culture to me. I like how some of the imagery and words came together, and some of the playful typesetting was fun and engaging....more

Even though the story takes place in the Ivory Coast in the 70s and there are lots of obvious differences, it feels familiar and it reminds me of my childhood in The Bahamas in the 90s. There's something, I suppose, to be said about the global links of black culture. I especially loved the illustrations, which were the perfect match for the story. All the little extras in the back with the glossary of local terms and recipes and so on were a lovely addition. This was just such a fun volume and I'll definitely be continuing with the series.

I love the art syle and their way of talking feels believably tween without lots of clunky slang or 'of the time' phrases. I feel a little like I could play Brian K Vaughan bingo with some of the motifs in here that I recognise from Saga.. I'm not sure if that will start to feel played out after a while or not(view spoiler)[ and the aliens element feels a little cheesy (though, for me, aliens feel pretty cheesy in general), but it's probably done in the most acceptable way that cheesy aliens could be done (hide spoiler)]. For the moment it's all working for me as a whole. 3.5 stars...more

Pretty good start to the continuation of the series in comic format. It definitely has a lot of the spirit of the show and will make the best possible substitute for a TV series cut short far too soon. I'd certainly be interested in continuing my mourning of the show by getting further into this comic series, but I'm not sure anything will ever heal that wound.. I liked all the extra bits at the end of the book. The script to page part was particularly interesting – especially if you're interested in the process of making comics....more

--- There's a slight nagging feeling of this not quite being completely satisfying and I think it has to do with Eudes and Claudine's storylines feeling suddenly wrapped up and diverging a bit too much from the main story as well as Morue suddenly becoming more mature in her thinking without us getting to really see how that growth happened. I wouldn't say the latter was unbelievable necessarily...just...that it happened really suddenly. I suppose there are ideas (that I disagree with) that motherhood does that to you......more
