Like, there's so much hate towards the main character's mother, she's called the C-Word constantly by characters that haven't met her, and, yeah, she abandoned her child when the kids was 15, which is terrible, but it's constant. I'm a book that's otherwise fairly light and fun anytime the Mother character is mentioned it's just hate and anger to such a degree that I'm not sure I want to read anything else by this author. Because the hate felt by the characters stops them from seeing clues and moving the plot forward because they have to spend a chapter being angry....more

There's a lot of Legend Of Zelda references. Just. A Lot. I really enjoyed this, it's very goofy. I really liked the two narrators and the two differing viewpoints of the characters. The story is a bit... simple, but that's comparing it to full Sci-Fi Epics, which: this is not trying to be. It's not trying to be Dune, it's trying to be a fun adventure. Which it is. It's really quick moving. The characters are interesting and smart. I liked it enough that I'll probably be getting the second one very soon....more

It starts as a sort of "Ready Player One" sort of thing, where a woman is so good at a video game that she gets her dream job. This leads her to learn that the "Diva Casting" used in the game was acting as a way for the players to learn how to use real magic. So, a "Last Star Fighter" thing, But then it builds to be a situation where reality itself is threatened and only the that can save the world are the "Battle Linguists" that learned magic in this way. And then there's a section where some of the characters explore an ancient city. And there's some Dungeon Crawl sections of big monster fights. And there's a weird thing about California becoming it's own country. And it all works. It's very strange. It's a really fun adventure that has good characters at the heart of the story and it's fun while also being just VERY weird....more

I didn't realize this wasn't by Sanderson until I looked into it afterward and I think that's a great sign that the authors are working together to create a consistant world. Strange mystery, interesting ideas and just a good story. ...more

This is a heist novel, and a book about artificial intelligence, and a bit of a Big Guy and Lady Cop adventure/mystery (except the lady isn't a cop, at all) and a book about revolution and, it's just everything. And it's good. It's about how slavery is bad and how people perpetrate it without thought because "well, it's just temporary, whoops it's been going on for decades/generations", and it's both sad and depressing and not heavy. This was great, in short. I really look forward to more of this series. And I feel like this is an author who, I've read a bunch of his books and they're all really good, and I don't hear anyone taking about them online. I'm sure they're all keeping quiet so as to not spoil things, but, man, we need to get it out that these books are so good....more

I really liked the stuff with While reading this I realized I'd read it before. I don't remember when, so I'm making it part of the books read in 2022. I really liked the stuff with the magic doors in the fortress, that was really clever and a neat concept well executed. I liked that the last bit was basically three to seven heists all being pulled at the same time. I forgot how fun this series is, and I look forward to getting back into it....more

I liked all the characters and I liked the fact that The White Rat was a Good that wasn't like what you usually find in a fantasy novel. And there were both clerks and clerics, as well as Holy Lawyers, which was a great touch to this fantasy world. I liked all the elements to the story, the characters are all well written. The heros are likeable, the villains are unlikable but logical, not just it to be bad guys simply because the heros need a foil. I liked the way the Rage took over the Paladins, especially when they all fall under the Rage together, that's a really interesting scene and very exciting. I will say the Parlor Room scene was a little hokey and felt very Deus Ex Machina and like suddenly the book became a stage play for a moment, but it worked as a good way to reveal what needs to be revealed. I think I'll probably read another book by this author, but maybe not immediately....more

This is a great fun and relatively light adventure that just flies by. It's god Godzilla type monsters and corporate jerks and is just a lot of fun. I really enjoyed this and then in the epilogue Scalzi said how he basically wrote it in one bright burst of writing after kind of giving up on another novel, just that this appeared in his head fully formed and ready to be written. And that was also great to hear. Not the part where he was worried he'd never write again, but that he had a spark of inspiration so strong that he still was able to meet the deadline he'd been given for a completely different book. It's just a fun adventure with monsters and bugs and exploding helicopters....more

It took awhile for me to get back into the story to understand what was happening when the last book ended, but it got moving pretty quickly, all things considered. I'm really excited to see where this goes next. There's so much going on here, I kind of forgot why there was a rebellion, until it was explained again, and then it was like "Oh, Right, all the evil!" This is so good. There's a good amount of character growth and there's a couple pretty devastating deaths. This is getting really interesting, and there's is going to get really interesting pretty soon if things keep going in the direction they're going. I'm definitely coming back for more....more

I forgot how much I liked the main character narrating for other characters against their will. It's a good joke that has been done in both books and which works really well. This is basically about Global Warming, but there are big chunks where you're following "Lox" a guy who is having a hard time finding his way in the world. Eventually Lox finds what he's meant to do, but part of his narrative is that even when he's in control of his life, he's not really. And that could be said of most of the characters in this book. Everyone is doing things and everyone is trying to get ahead of the climate disaster, but everyone is reacting to what is happening around them, rather than actively preventing things from happening to them. And that's understandable, it makes the characters understandable and realisitic. Whether it's the Queen of the Netherlands, or the guy who's hunting the Moby Dick of hogs, everyone seems real, in an surprisingly odd book. I really liked this, it's almost like the realistic version of Snow Crash. Where Snow Crash is intentionally goofy, this is serious. Where the central threat of Snow Crash is theoretical, this is very real. But there's still competitive fighting and billionaires trying to change the world without consulting people first. This is good, I just wish it was a little more joyous. ...more
