This is definitely one of Gena Showalter’s darker series where pain, torture and suffering seems to be regular. I wouldn’t recommend this to the faint of heart, especially since there’s a lot of angst thrown in as well.
However, if you’re like me and like a good, engaging read, then I think you’ll enjoy this book. It wasn’t my favorite of the series, but there’s no question that there was a lot of details in this book. Showalter is a natural storyteller, so no story ever seems too farfetched or unrealistic. She breathes life into her characters by exploring various emotions, usually dealing with their pasts before giving them a passionate romance worth remembering.
I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys darker Paranormal Romances that focuses on the characters. ...more
It’s time for readers to get excited again because Gena Showalter has returned to the Rise of the Warlords series!
With this installment, she pairs up an unlikely couple together. Halo is a cold and merciless assassin whereas Ophelia is a fierce and spunky harpy warrior. However, the two make up a wonderful couple as they repeat the same fierce battle again and again. Normally, I’m not a fan of stories that involve infinite loops. With these types of stories, it can feel repetitive or boring. However, Showalter does a good job of creating new differences that keep it exciting.
My favorite aspect of this story was the characters though. It’s been a long time since I’ve fallen in love with a hero and heroine like this. Despite their differences, I thought that both were very interesting characters. So as they started to fall in love, it created a lot of wonderful tension and chemistry.
I had a blast reading this book and I have no question that readers will enjoy this action-packed book. Showalter is an amazing storyteller and I can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve next!...more

Gena Showalter returns with a brand new Paranormal Romance series called Immortal Enemies. This time this series features the fae and they aren’t like the fairytale like creatures that many of us believe them to me. Showalter’s style is much darker in this book than it is in her usual books. Tragic events with tragic characters are very much what this book is about, so if you’re into violence, trauma and drama, then I think you’ll enjoy this book.
There’s a lot of attention to detail in this book and especially the writing. I was impressed with the way Showalter was able to change her style to create a totally different book from her others. However, I felt like I couldn’t connect with some of the characters, the hero, in particular. Since the concept is of revenge, I just found that I couldn’t quite relate to what he was going through. He felt too cold and ruthless that the romance didn’t burn as brightly as I would have liked. However, I kept reading and I’m glad that I did because there was some thawing of his character once the romance bloomed.
Showalter does a great job with the worldbuilding in this book, so if you’re looking for a new world to dive into and lose yourself, HEARTLESS is a perfect summer read to help you escape reality....more
THE WARLORD is the first book in Gena Showalter’s brand new Paranormal Romance series, Rise of the Warlords. If you’re a fan of her Lords of the Underworld series, then you may be familiar with this story’s heroine, Taliyah Skyhawk.
There is no doubt that I fell hard for Taliyah in this book. I love her fierce attitude and loyalty to her people. I love that she wanted to take responsibility for her actions and that she wasn’t afraid to do what was necessary of her. Her fun personality wasn’t too over the top and I thought that she paired really nicely with Roc.
In terms of the romance, it blooms slowly but fiercely. But there’s also a great focus on the worldbuilding and the harpies in this book obviously. I am definitely looking forward this new series. THE WARLORD completely surpassed my expectations and I cannot wait to see how the rest of the series unfolds. Gena Showalter really hit this one out of the park. Rise of the Warlords is definitely a series that you do not want to miss!...more

THE GLASS QUEEN is the second installment in Gena Showalter’s The Forest of Good and Evil. If you don’t know already, this entire series is based on fairy tales, so I was quite interested to see how this new book would pan out.
As you can expect with this title, it’s all about Cinderella. I feel like this fairy tale is quite popular amongst Young Adult Fantasy readers, so it’s no surprise to see Showalter putting her own twist on things. I enjoyed this book more than the first in the series. It reminded me a lot of Marissa Meyer’s Lunar Chronicles series, which is one of my all-time favorite YA series. So if you enjoyed that series, I have no doubt that you’ll enjoy this one too.
Although this is a YA book, I enjoyed the fact that Showalter doesn’t change her writing style very much. It’s eloquent and quite complex, which actually makes me really happy. Sometimes, I find that her writing can be a little choppy, but this one worked for me. I didn’t love all points of this plot, however. But of course, you can’t love everything. All in all, I think it was something fun and different. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series....more
I’m going to cut to the chase with this book. First off, I was looking forward to diving back into this world because I really enjoyed the first book of the series. However, I have discovered something about the writing in this book. As a fan of Showalter for many years, I can safely say that I have read quite a bit of her books so I am familiar with her writing style. However, it seems that she is changing up her style quite a lot in this series and to be honest, I’m not really sure how I feel about it.
The narration felt really choppy to me, making it a little difficult to get into. I also found the book to be extremely predictable this time around, which is strange because Showalter usually keeps readers on their toes. But I knew a character was going to die almost immediately after they were introduced, so I don’t know if it was just me or if the book really did feel too foreseeable.
However, I am going to keep trying the other books in the series because I like the premise of the series. It has an Immortals After Dark feel to it, so if you like Kresley Cole’s paranormal writing, then I think you will enjoy this. But the writing style of this book felt more like Cole’s YA series, the Arcana Chronicles, which I actually wasn’t a fan of. So I guess I will have to learn how to deal with the chopping style.
So while this book wasn’t a total hit for me, I am still looking forward to seeing what Gena has in store for her readers next.
Gena Showalter has a brand new Young Adult series called "The Forest of Good and Evil". The first book in the series is called THE EVIL QUEEN. If you Gena Showalter has a brand new Young Adult series called "The Forest of Good and Evil". The first book in the series is called THE EVIL QUEEN. If you can't tell already, it's a fairy tale retelling of Snow White, but the twist is that it's all about the villain. As a fairy tale lover myself, I was very excited about this new series. I also think that this series is a good introduction to Showalter's writing style if you haven't tried her books before. This story captures her fun, light-hearted writing style but also explores the darker themes that she often writes about in her other books.
Unfortunately, I had a little bit of trouble getting into this book because of the protagonist. I wasn't fully invested in the character, which was why I felt like this book was a little slow at times. However, I guess it makes sense that it would take me a while because it's a story about a character readers wouldn't normally get a point of view from otherwise. Nevertheless, I will still try reading the next book in the series, just to see if my opinion will change.
If you're a fan of Marissa Meyer's HEARTLESS, then I think you would definitely enjoy this book! THE EVIL QUEEN will definitely make you rethink the classic fairy tale!

There’s a new PNR series in town and it’s a hot one by Gena Showalter! If you’re like me and have been reading books when PNR was a hot topic, then you’ve probably noticed that good PNR series are rare these days. That was why I was very excited to see Gena Showalter coming out with a new PNR series.
The concept of this series is unique. It has a bit of an IAD feel to it because it involves these war gods competing against each other. So you can expect a lot of alpha males and females duking it out in a free for all. There’s a lot of trash talking, both within the competitors and actually even between the hero and heroine.
I thoroughly enjoyed the hero and the paranormal aspect of this series. It brought back those feelings that I have missed dearly in the recent years. And I am hoping that the series continues to stick to the PNR route and become better.
Showalter’s trademark humor is very much present within these pages. I like how much personality she brings to her characters, especially the heroine. However, I do think that it can be a double-edged sword at times. What makes these books so fun can also bog down the pacing and that was a little of the case here. But since I was just so excited about a new PNR series, I felt like I could excuse it. Keeping this in mind though, I wonder how my opinion will shift as the series goes on.
If you’ve been on the lookout for a new PNR to sink your teeth into, Gena Showalter’s SHADOW AND ICE will certainly appeal to you. She’s got a great new bunch of heroes and heroines and I can’t wait to read about them all!...more

LIFEBLOOD is the second book in the Everlife series by Gena Showalter. I would highly suggest reading this series in order as the first book kind of ends on a bit of a cliffie. Some answers are present in this book but mostly, Showalter raises more questions and puts Ten, our heroine, in some very disastrous situations. One of my favorite parts of the first book was Ten. She’s very independent and fun, but in this book, I think there was a bit of a change in her character. I’m not sure that she’s as fiery as she was in the first book, but that might just be because now she knows she’s in and over her head and must act a bit more rationally.
In terms of romance, there’s an interesting one here. I wondered what was going to come from it because really, the first book only introduced them and didn’t explore it as much as I wanted. I still don’t know where Showalter is going with it, but I am intrigued by Ten and Killian’s dynamic. I really like him. There’s a complexity to his character that I find intriguing. We never really know where his thoughts are or what he’s going to do next and I think that keeps the readers on their toes when he’s around.
Again, Showalter continues to build her world from the ground up and I really like the way she’s done it. She doesn’t reveal everything all at once and that’s a good sign. If she did, I think it would bore readers and it probably wouldn’t be as good as it is now. LIFEBLOOD is another wonderful installment to the series....more
Gena Showalter shows exactly why she is one of the premier authors of Paranormal Romance with THE DARKEST TORMENT. This is book twelve in the4.5 stars
Gena Showalter shows exactly why she is one of the premier authors of Paranormal Romance with THE DARKEST TORMENT. This is book twelve in the Lords of the Underworld series and this book might also come as a surprise to readers when they learn that this is actually Baden's book.
Baden is a character that we don't know too much about. I know plenty of readers were hoping that this would be Cameo's or even William's book but Showalter takes a different route with the series in this one. The heroine of the story, Katarina Joelle, is even a dog trainer who gets taken by Baden from her own wedding to act as leverage against her powerful husband.
The two main leads couldn't be more different. While Baden is dark and temperamental, Katarina has the spunk and tenacity that a lot of Showalter heroines have. The unlikely pairing, and the even more unpredictable storyline, creates for a riveting read that is sure to entice readers. There are so many amazing moments that it's hard to choose one.
True to Showalter's writing style, there's plenty of laugh out loud moments and action. In fact, I found myself giggling throughout this book so much that I had to start reading this book in private. The rest of the randy Lords are present and but for me, William nearly stole the show. He has so many hilarious moments that stand out in my mind. I am literally on the edge of my seat as I await his book.
But perhaps the best thing about this book, better than the humor and the action, is Showalter's writing. Everything is working in perfect unison from the pacing to the descriptions and the twists and turns. I'm surprised that Showalter can pack so much excitement into a single book!
If you haven't started the Lords of the Underworld series yet, then you are in for a treat! Be prepared for some laughs, some heartbreak and a hot Lord or two!
