"El Aleph" también es muy bueno y el de Tadeo Isidoro Cruz tiene un final que solo a los argentinos nos emocionará.

En esta ocasión solo me tocó la parte de ortotipografía y no de estilo, por tratarse de un producto ya publicado.
Sin dudas que a nivel estilo y voz propia quedaba espacio para mejorar, que ya lo hizo en su otra novela Sitres, pero me quedo maravillada con el manejo de personajes y dinámica entre ellos. Para mí la historia fue predecible, aunque eso no es algo negativo, sino que quiere decir que todas las pistas estaban puestas en el lugar correcto. La caracterización de Hugo es demasiado real y conocida para todos aquellos que hemos vivido en el círculo de alguien como él. Tanto él como Nora son muy creíbles y verosímiles. La onda pueblo chico, infierno grande de Toledo también fue bien transmitida.
La serie de eventos desafortunados puede parecer demasiado hacia el final, pero creo que era la intención.

Por un lado puedo empatizar fácilmente con los autores en relación a sus bibliotecas abandonadas en casas de sus padres tras una mudanza o separación (estoy viviendo lo de la mudanza a otra ciudad y extraño mis libros). Por otro, es evidente que invitaron a cada uno de los autores a responder un cuestionario como para organizar un ensayo sobre eso y en muchas partes, honestamente, no me interesaba conocer la opinión ni las experiencias personales de cada uno. Lo bueno es que todos piensan de manera distinta y es divertido ver cómo lo que en uno era un dogma para otro era una aberración, y así. Pero siento que no me reveló nada ni me aportó información nueva ni aprendí demasiado de cada autor, porque además de ser varios, es muy fácil confundir un texto con otro y ya olvidarse quién dijo qué. Me gusta mucho cómo está escrito y la mezcla de narración, autobiografía, expedientes judiciales, entrevista y crónica periodística me hizo acordar al Por qué volvías cada verano, de Belén López Peiró, otro libro imprescindible para mí.
Mi única queja radicaría en que a veces se iba por las ramas en ciertos eventos que en nada aportaban a los casos de las tres chicas, como cuando intentó localizar al hermano de una para que le concediera una entrevista en el caluroso Chaco. También al principio y hasta casi la mitad del libro me costó ubicar a cada una de las tres chicas de los casos porque la autora iba y venía en sus relatos en cada página más o menos y no fue hasta bastante después que por fin pude darles una cara en mi mente a cada una y me aprendí bien sus nombres. Francesca "partió sus labios" unas mil veces en menos de 300 páginas, pero se lo perdonamos por ser la prota mujer más diferenciada de la saga. Fue interesante leer, por primera vez en seis libros, una mujer que no es virgen. Lo único verdaderamente malo es que ninguno de los protas varones zafa ningún test de misoginia, aunque dentro de todo Michael parece el más light.
Este libro también es muy monótono, lineal. No hay mucho contenido. Lo único que -ocurre-, ocurre al principio, y luego es Francesca tratando de decidir si se casa con Michael o no. Pero no hay misterio, no hay drama, no hay un problema, es como que carece de inicio, nudo, desenlace y es todo así una línea ------------------- que va del punto A... al punto A.
Me pregunto cómo manejarán esto en la serie. Me consta que los actores crecen y que expanden hasta en cosas que ni existen en los libros, pero honestamente Francesca no tiene suficiente material para una temporada, te diría que solo tiene material para dos capítulos. El Casebook fue más decepcionante. A nivel trama y misterio, los cuentos dejaron que desear. Algunos incluso ni siquiera contenían un crimen, sino que se trataba de accidentes o casos fortuitos. Se trata de un retelling de la Bella y la Bestia con el toque de los hombres lobos de Mel. Me maravillé con el Valle Hundido y quise vivir en sus castillos. Acompañé a Lady Fay en esta titánica tarea de casarse con un lobo-hombre. La escritura es inmersiva, suficientemente descriptiva y fresca. El romance es un slowburn de matrimonio arreglado. El respeto y la igualdad son los pilares de esta pareja tan dispar, que lentamente se van acercando mientras se descubren mutuamente.
Esperaba encontrarme solo romance, pero la historia me aportó mucho lore muy cuidado, acción, violencia y plot twists. Se nota que hay mucho preparado para lo que viene y me entusiasma saber cómo seguirá todo.
Las voces narradoras de los dos protagonistas están bien diferenciadas, cada uno cuenta y ve las cosas de diferente manera y esa distinción se aprecia mucho. Así como los diálogos variados y creíbles.
En resumen, fue una experiencia muy enriquecedora que me dejó con ganas de más. No puedo esperar a que salga Proyecto Promesa. Y me honra que Mel me haya dejado ser parte de esto con mis ilustraciones. ...more

La edición me venía gustando un montón (banco este proyecto de más traducciones al castellano rioplatense, quiero más libros así) hasta que noté que en realidad no estaba tan cuidada, con falta de tildes, tildes de más (lo cual es raro, porque en general te olvidás de poner tildes, no ponés de más...) y luego hacia el final, mezcla de algunas cositas españolas con argentinas en la gramática que detecté al pasar y que no le presté tanta atención para mantener mi cordura. Pero sí. No me gusta que la traducción sea inconsistente, cuanto menos.

Fue disfrutable y me gustó ver los problemas de adulto de la prota con los que me sentí muy identificada. Lo único que no me cerró para nada fue la diferencia de edad entre la prota (26) y el interés amoroso (19), sobretodo porque en Corea la mayoría de edad se alcanza a los 21, así que esencialmente estaría saliendo con un adolescente, lo cual hizo que toda mi experiencia con la lectura fuera bastante mermada. ...more

Es un shoujo viejo y se nota a la legua, pero lo disfruté un montón y me lo devoré. Entre que amo la época histórica (el Renacimiento), el lugar (Florencia y otras partes de Italia) y los personajes históricos que aparecen (entre ellos, Da Vinci y los Borgia), fue una delicia el argumento, los dibujos y el romance. Lo único que me hizo ruido fue la innecesaria escena de (view spoiler)[violación/abuso sexual de parte de César Borgia contra la prota (hide spoiler)], pero no me sorprende del personaje, la verdad.
En conclusión, si se puede saltear el hecho de que es un producto de su época, es un shoujo muy disfrutable. Y Chiho ilustra muy lindo. ...more

Vengo de leer a Steven Saylor y buscaba más de eso acá: Antigua Roma + detective + misterio policial. Me tenía que gustar.
Sin embargo lo encontré decepcionante. Me costó acostumbrarme a la narración: hay cortes entre párrafos que en teoría indicarían que se termina un tema y empieza otro, pero en realidad en este caso continúa el mismo tema anterior, con lo cual los cortes no tenían mucho sentido. La forma de escribir de Davis no me volvió loca. Había veces que se extendía largo y tendido en descripciones o cuestiones históricas y otras en las que simplemente y cito decía "No me voy a detener a describir Atenas" o "Por supuesto que fuimos al Acrópolis". El tono del narrador cambiaba todo el tiempo, entre crónica seria y anécdota cómica a amigos. No encontré que esto funcionara del todo.
Por otra parte, el misterio dejó bastante que desear. Siento que al libro le sobraron unas 100 o 200 páginas. Se estanca en el medio y no se avanza en nada. Se re entrevista a la misma gente una y otra vez sin obtener información nueva. Me recuerda un poco al primer libro policial que escribió J. K. Rowling y que no me gustó mucho por esto, pues no hay pistas visibles para el lector, no nos podemos adelantar al final ni descubrir por nosotros mismos al culpable. Es como que te van contando todo sin darte lugar a sacar conclusiones.
A su vez, sentí a esta novela muy moderna. No solo en diálogos sino en su encuadre de Roma del Siglo I. No pude encontrar por ningún lado que las Agencias de viajes turísticos ya existieran en la antigüedad, pero incluso si existían, está presentada muy como lo son ahora, con un coordinador que te consigue hoteles y excursiones y comida y con viajeros quejosos de que el plato elegido no era el deseado. El turismo existía en la Antigua Roma, sí, pero dudo que haya sido como lo es hoy en día. Simplemente me chocó mucho y me costó creerme la mitad de las cosas que ocurrían por esto. El protagonista detective percibía todas las cuestiones místicas sobre dioses y oráculos con el escepticismo de un hombre promedio occidental del Siglo XXI, cuando la realidad es que los antiguos eran muy respetuosos y honraban a los dioses con devoción. Me pareció una mirada muy moderna también. Si esta historia se ubicaba en la actualidad, solo habría necesidad de cambiarle los nombres a algunos personajes y lugares, y ya está.
A pesar de ello me enganchó mucho y me devoré las últimas cien páginas. No me cambió la vida y no creo leer más de esta autora. Cumplió su función de entretenerme y mantenerme enganchada, eso es todo....more

No fue lo que esperaba, ni lo que promete la saga - esta saga de libros, Sub Rosa, se supone que es una saga de misterio ambientado en la Roma Republicana. Obviamente tintes de novela histórica va a tener, toda historia que decida poner sus raíces en una época histórica determinada vivida por la humanidad algo de novela histórica va a tener sin duda, aunque sea mínimo... Los dos primeros libros de esta saga lograron balancear estos dos géneros (histórica y policial) muy bien, por eso mi estado de maravilla para con el autor. Sin embargo, en esta tercer entrega no puedo ni decir que es novela policial, ni tampoco... histórica.
O sea, histórica es: se ambienta en la revuelta e intento de golpe de Estado de Catilina, el mayor enemigo de la historia romana, el Hitler de la Antigüedad. Pero el enfoque no está tan puesto en la vida romana antigua o su política, sino más bien en... el día a día de Gordiano y su familia en su nueva granja. Es más parecido a un slife of life que a cualquiera de los dos géneros que la novela se jacta de ser.
A su vez, sí contiene elementos de misterio, pero son tan superficiales y mueven tan poco la trama, que una se olvida de que, en efecto, esta novela está catalogada de policial. Además, me vi venir la resolución desde casi el principio, y me dije, si termina siendo así, va a ser medio flojo... y fue así, y fue flojo. No hay un asesino culpable y no se recolectan pistas, ni se interroga, ni se hace trabajo de campo de detective, no: tres cuerpos sin cabeza aparecen en la granja de Gordiano en diferentes momentos del año, y nada se hace al respecto. Gordiano piensa que son una amenaza y eso es todo. No hay búsqueda, no hay misterio, no hay trabajo de detective, como en los dos libros anteriores. Al final, se devela quién fue quien puso esos cuerpos ahí, y sus motivos, pero... como dije, fue flojo.
Hay mucha política, pero esta está plasmada de manera que no parezca tanta política... quiero decir que se habla mucho de las elecciones y de Cícero como cónsul y sus enemigos políticos, pero lo único que vemos de esta política son discursos. Solo son personajes hablando en el foro. Entiendo que es parte de la política, pero me habría gustado más estar... ¿más dentro, si se quiere? ¿Ver de cerca las cosas que al final nos develan que pasaron tras bambalinas? A la gente le gustó Juego de Tronos no solo por las muertes sino porque veíamos elucubrar y complotar a sus personajes y traicionarse mutuamente, esos juegos políticos peligrosos. Bueno, esos juegos "estuvieron" acá presentes, solo que no se narraban, y lo único que obtuvimos de política romana fue un día de votación caótico y discursos pomposos por doquier, que más bien decían las cosas en vez de mostrarlas.
Con lo cual, de misterio poco, y de histórico dejó que desear... ¿qué fue esta novela?
Podría decirse que es como una oda a Catilina. Este aspecto me parece interesante, cuanto menos, pues los únicos registros históricos y "verídicos" que existen de tal personaje son de sus enemigos, más que nada de Cícero, quien quería aniquilarlo social y políticamente. Por supuesto, entonces, que lo que sepamos de Catilina unos dos mil años después sea bastante deplorable de él. Esta novela intentó desligarse de esos preconceptos que se tiene de este personaje y mostrar una faceta más humana, no tan villana. En cambio, se villaniza mucho a Cícero, (me acabo de dar cuenta que estuve escribiendo su nombre mezcla de inglés y latín, perdón, Cicerón) y muestra otra perspectiva de lo que pudo haber vivido el ciudadano romano corriente en esos momentos tan tumultuosos.
Sin embargo, en cuanto Catilina estaba en escena, una podría haberse esperado que la novela tomara ese tinte político que yo tanto buscaba... pero Catilina se la pasó dando sermones y filosofando sobre diferentes conceptos, como lo sería la familia, los pecados, la lujuria, lo que significa ser hombre. Me gustaría aclarar acá que todo esto de lo que Catilina se expresó largo y tendido durante la novela se corresponde muy bien con el pensamiento romano del momento. Seguro hay alguna que otra cosa anacrónica, pero toda la concepción de ser penetrado, que eso te volvía automáticamente inferior, y que el hombre romano podía penetrar siempre y cuando no lo fuera él... habla de cosas que hoy quizás parecerían muy progres pero entonces eran muy normales. El concepto de penetración toma especial importancia en la muerte de César (que no ocurre en esta novela, pero está bueno mencionarlo).
A pesar de que las charlas de Catilina podrían haber sido algo interesantes - aunque tediosas - la novela seguía sin un rumbo muy claro. ¿Es una novela histórica? Y un poco sí. ¿Es una novela de misterio? No tanto. ¿Es un ensayo filosófico? Ehh... ¿Es un manual sobre cómo ser padre? Casi, y lo peor es que este sería el casillero que más le conviene a esta historia.
La mayor parte de la novela no se trata ni de Catilina siendo Catilina, ni del misterio Sub Rosa, ni de la política romana... se trata de Gordiano aprendiendo a criar a Metón, el esclavo que adoptó al final del libro anterior, y un poquito a Diana, su hijita, pero más que nada Metón. Y boy oh boy que Gordiano se pasa hojas y hojas rumeando sobre el tema de la paternidad. Supongo que el autor habrá vivido alguna experiencia similar en el momento en que escribió esto (me enteré que es homosexual, con lo cual no sé muy bien cómo habrán estado las leyes de adopción al momento de publicación de este libro) o quizás estaba proyectando cosas de su propio padre, porque si no, no me explico el cambio radical de tono de una novela a otra.
Como vengo diciendo, una esperaba misterio, detectives, interrogatorios, búsqueda de pistas, todo embebido en una sociedad romana muy orgánica y real, pero lo que obtenemos es vida de granja, los deberes cotidianos sobre cómo cortar el pasto o conseguir agua del pozo, criar a un adolescente, y la furia de tener que ir un día a la ciudad a votar a las autoridades, sumado a un personaje históricamente excéntrico cuya versión en este libro intenta redimir un poco la versión que obtuvimos en nuestra Historia.
Es... raro. Esa fue mi percepción durante toda la novela. Es raro, ¿hacia dónde va? ¿Cuál es el núcleo de esta historia? ¿Qué quería contar Saylor? Me intriga. No son quejas, son genuinas dudas, porque me gustaron mucho sus dos libros anteriores, y en este me hallo en un completo estado de confusión.
Esto no quiere decir que el libro sea malo. Como siempre, su ambientación es su fuerte, sus descripciones son muy buenas, y la forma que tiene de llevar a personajes históricos y diferenciarlos muy bien incluso en sus patrones de habla dice mucho de su capacidad como escritor. Eso sí, quizás sea porque es la primera novela de él que leo en inglés original, pero esta vez noté muchas más muletillas y mucha más exposición en diálogos que en las traducciones que leí no me topé, sobretodo al comienzo del libro.
Sigue siendo una saga que recomiendo, pero me abstengo de recomendar este libro en particular. El primer libro sigue siendo una de las mejores cosas que leí. Espero que el cuarto no siga los mismos pasos de este, o que al menos me avisen de antemano con qué clase de historia me voy a topar... ...more
