Since I was not myself a child, or the mother of young children, or even yet a young elementary art teacher looking for books to share with kids, it didn't come to my attention. So almost 50 years later, I am now a much older art teacher AND a grandma, so discovering children's books for both purposes is just something that I do.
And this is a charming book that I can use both for teaching art and for sharing with my five grandchildren under 6. I recognize the style of illustration as being from the 60's, but it will also communicate to today's generation of kids. The story of mistaken identity is very funny and reminds me somewhat of another picture book favorite, Eric Kimmel's "The Chanakuh Guest", but will connect to younger listeners.
On a cold winter day, Herman puts on his furry brown coat and hat to go visit his Aunt Gert, but before he arrives he is mistaken by a family of brown bears for their cousin Julius. The more Herman tries to convince them he is a little boy, the more the bears insist he is Julius.
