Difficult to say it was really worth the 6-year wait. You'd think that after all that time writing and re-writing this book, it would feel like every Difficult to say it was really worth the 6-year wait. You'd think that after all that time writing and re-writing this book, it would feel like every single word mattered. That's not the case. Too often it feels like it's treading water, not too dissimilar to Feast in that respect. Some sections really should have been cut short to speed up proceedings. As it is I get the feeling he's going to struggle to finish the series in 2 more books. That is unless something changes drastically in his approach. What elevates it are the characters involved in this half of the story, which feature some of my favourites.
In terms of immersive reading experiences, there's been few better this year among my completed books. This is the flipside of the overly descriptive passages he has. On the one hand it means proceedings slow to a crawl but on the other I almost feel as if I'm there taking in the sights, the sounds and the smells. It's one of the reasons I love to get involved in Big Fat Fantasy books, when done right there's almost nothing like that sort of experience.
The other problem is where the book ends. It's somewhat of an abrupt stop and there's some big cliffhangers involved. Given that we won't know how long he'll take with the next book, it could be another 5-6 years before we see what happens next.
Better than Feast but not as good as the other 3 books. Coupled with the problems I had, I found it difficult to give the book any more than 4 stars....more
