Witness Protection Widow follows Ali who is in witness protection because in a few days she has to testify against her dangerous father-in-law. Jax is the new marshal assigned to protect her during the last five days before the trial.
When I started Witness Protection Widow, I was expecting something different which influenced my reading experience throughout. I was expecting more (steamy) romance, especially since Ali and Jax had a history together, but overall, there wasn't a lot of romance. When there was romance, for me, it fell flat. I was not really into it or felt like it was too rushed. Now, I am unsure whether this is the case of all Harlequin Intrigue or just this book since this is the first Harlequin Intrigue book I have read.
I found the most interesting part when it was uncovered what really happened to Ali. She went through a lot. However, the ending was so rushed. (view spoiler)[I was surprised the trial was mostly glossed over. And the proposal was also so rushed and I did not like it. I got the feeling it was mostly justified by their previous relationship 10 years ago and I personally just did not like it. (hide spoiler)]

It was great to read the first 25 chapters/190 pages of this book just after finishing reading Bloodwitch. The sampler ended at a perfect moment for me to want to immediately pick up the book so I can continue reading!
I had a very mixed experience reading this fourth instalment of the Witchlands series. Mostly because I like some characters more than others (view spoiler)[but also because I really did not like that Aeduan's body was hijacked... (hide spoiler)]
I still don't know how I feel about this series. I'll have to see if I'm still interested in picking up the next book next year.

They are undoubtedly crucial for the freedom and rights of women and other people with uteruses!
Furthermore, the history of pregnancy tests is entertainingly weird. From mice, and rabbits to frogs, knowing whether you were pregnant included some interesting tests... (and sad)
It was very insightful and very empowering! I really recommend it if you want to learn more about pregnancy tests and how they are more important than just being convenient....more

I really loved this quote: "There is no need to choose between a family life and a life of the mind. Those who think there is probably don't have much of the second."
This resonated with me as a young woman at the start of her career. It is one of the inspiring lessons young children can take from Ada's life....more

Madam C.J. Walker Builds a Business tells the story of Sarah Breedlove and how she became America's first female self-made millionaire. The illustrations and how her story is told are great for children around middle-grade age. I learnt a lot about Sarah and this also made me watch Netflix's Selfmade, inspired by Madam C.J. Walker's life (also a great show!). It is nice to see her celebrated like this.
At the end of the book are also activities that will inspire young children to build their own business, too!...more

Cleric Chic wanders into the riverlands to record tales of the notorious near-immortal martial artists who haunt the region. On the road to Betony Docks, they fall in with a pair of young women far from home, and an older couple who are more than they seem. As Chih runs headlong into an ancient feud, they find themselves far more entangled in the history of the riverlands than they ever expected to be.
I have enjoyed this book in the Singing Hills Cycle the best so far. The companions Chic meets in this book are very interesting as well as the notorious martial artists. I listened to the first two as audiobook but I think I should read the fourth the fifth books because I feel like the audiobook goes too quickly to fully enjoy this series since they are so short....more

Unfortunately, I was not sucked into this book as much as the first one. I enjoyed The Atlas Six enough to be interested in the second one. I also thought this was the last one so that expectation might also have influenced my feelings towards this sequel. Because I was expecting an ending of a series and not of a second installment in a trilogy. So, unfortunately I only thought this was an okay book....more

Dr Joe Schwarcz focuses on the deluge of anecdotes, cherry-picked data, pseudoscientific nonsense, and seductive baseless health claims that undermine efforts to educate the public about evidence-based science. The wide scope of the topics drawn from past and present aims to cast a life preserver to people drowning in a sea of misinformation.
Quack Quack is a very interesting read. It is an anthology debunking pseudoscientific health claims that can lead to serious harm. I can recommend this book to anyone who loves a scientific-based approach....more

Ejaculate Responsibly has some interesting arguments about how we can refocus the way we think about abortion and birth control. Right now, (cis) women are held responsible for birth control, unwanted pregnancies and abortions. This book argues that men should not be off the hook so easily. The unwanted pregnancies could have been prevented if they ejaculated more responsibly, for example, by using a condom or having a vasectomy.
The short book is refreshing and sometimes even radical in its arguments. The author explains them clearly. Even if you might not agree with all the arguments, they are a good thought experiment at the very least about how we can refocus the way we think about who is responsible for unwanted pregnancies.
I would recommend this book to everyone, especially those in heterosexual relationships. ...more

Rainbow Fish and the Storyteller is a great story for children with the underlying message how to trust sources. In today's world there is a great amount of misinformation and children will have to learn how to navigate tall tales, lies and the truth. This picture is a great start for this conversation with children.
In the book, Rainbow Fish meets a new friend, Humbert, who tells a lot of stories. There was, for example, a big plug that would drain the ocean! But is this plug really there? Did someone really pull it? Humbert tells other tall stories and Rainbow Fish and his friends are not sure if they should believe him anymore....more

The Rainbow Fish and His Friends is a collection of five stories and some fun and games at the end as well as a short interview with the author. The stories included are The Rainbow Fish, Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale, Rainbow Fish Discovers the Deep Sea, You Can't Win Them All, Rainbow Fish and Good Night, Little Rainbow Fish. Upfront: I read Foul Lady Fortune before having read Gong's These Violent Delights duology. There are some spoilers of TVD but since it is a Romeo & Juliet retelling some spoilers were not as surprising. I did not mind it.
In Foul Lady Fortune, Rosalind is put on an espionage mission. Only for this mission she has to work together with Orion. They are to infiltrate a Japanese newspaper. Oh, and they have to get married so that their cover as newlyweds works. (Fun!) There are killings all over Shanghai and it is up to Rosalind and Orion to figure out the mystery.
I enjoyed Foul Lady Fortune and especially the character dynamics of Rosalind and Orion as well as the espionage elements. Unfortunately, I was not as intrigued as I thought I would be. But luckily, listening to the audiobook while reading along made for a good reading experience. The setting of 1930s Shanghai was very interesting for me as I know very little of Shanghai during that time period. I really enjoyed the setting. I enjoyed Bitch: On the Female of the Species so much. I learnt a lot about biology. Lucy Cooke discusses how the Victorian view on zoology is outdated. The chapters discuss mate choice, monogamy myth, eating your lover, good and bad mothers, aggressive female animals, matriarchs and menopause, homosexual animal couples and animals that exist beyond the gender binary. Cooke does this with humour and great expertise. She discusses a great variety of species, many of which she has met before or while doing research for this book.
I loved learning all these things and I would love to reread and annotate a physical book. I would recommend Bitch if you are into feminism and love to learn about animals....more
