I’m always a sucker for time travel stories and this one was short and sweet. One of my only complaints was that June never explored the future. It almost makes me wonder why it was time travel and not that she is locked in a room with no connections for five years. Idk. I know she is locked in that room, but five years is a long time!! I think she had books to keep her company, but I think I would go crazy being cooped up in one place that long.
I liked getting to explore Mikey and June as characters and I especially loved June’s self-reflection as she looks back on her life and reevaluates what matters to her.
Mikey was just an all-around nice guy. I loved getting to meet his neighbor lady, she was too nosy but such a sweetheart and I definitely got teary eyed when Mikey would go visit June’s mom.
I’m not always the biggest fan of the full audio books with all the background noises and such but most of it worked for me. The dog bark being the same EVERY time was hilarious though.
This was fun and I loved watching Mikey and June fall in love in two different timelines! I will definitely be looking out for this author in the future.

I didn’t mind the predictability, it was just that there wasn’t much substance to the book, it didn’t bring anything new. I know it’s YA romance but I felt like the story could have given just a bit more.
I picked it up because I had read many reviews saying that this was a comfort read and they had read it many times. And maybe if I was five years younger, I would have enjoyed this more. It was definitely a quick cute fluffy read and the characters were likable. If that’s what you are looking for, I would recommend this, but I found my self thinking of another Cinderella retelling that I liked a lot more (cough, cough) Cinder.

I just knew the comparisons, which I feel are pretty accurate. It gives the same feels as Spinning Silver and The Bear and the Nightingale. So if you want to read something similar, I think this one would be a good option.
**spoilers** This was a really fun atmospheric book. I really enjoyed seeing the world through Évike's eyes and how she navigated learning about her family history and where she fit in. I wish we got to see more of Évike learning to read.
A lot of the world building and politics felt too rushed but this being a stand-alone it was not bad. We did not get as much character depth as I wanted but that was due to the plot and it being a stand-alone. **end of spoilers**
Overall I enjoyed this book, I liked the characters, and I'm looking forward to reading more of this author's work in the future.

This book caught me by surprise, it was so magical. It was quiet and deliberate and it set out to say something. This book takes a while to get into but once you do, it is so good. This is a standalone-fantasy book with magic but it had more of the feel of a magical realism book. It is a fairytale retelling of the Goose Girl. I will say that you have to give it time to “cook”. The author is telling this amazing story and it takes a while to get to the interesting parts. But I found the journey delightful.
There are a lot of characters to keep track of but I really enjoyed Alyrra/Thon. I loved the journey she went through. She is still the same character at the end but she has gained more confidence in herself and her own actions. You see how strong she is--strong but silent. I liked seeing Thorn learn to be a goose girl and learning the language of Menaiya. I loved seeing the relationships develop between her and the hostlers and also the kids who work for Red Hawk. (so precious) I really liked the Horse Falada. Kestrin had complexity, we are constantly learning about him yet I feel like I know so little of him.
This book is pretty laser focused on Thorn. I haven’t read a single POV for a while so it was weird only being able to see into her head. I really felt the restraint of the single POV. I'm so used to seeing more of the story and getting different sides from different perspectives but by the end I found it really worked. This book covers some serious topics (sexual assault and abuse) and I feel the author handled them well.
I haven’t read a book that feels like this. It had a very unique feel and ambiance. It was long and slow but it was a whole experience. The book ends before the happily ever after but it works in this book. You have faith in these characters and in their decision to make their life into their own happily ever after.
I would definitely recommend this book!
