Leftover like scraps on a table, uneaten food, both a sacrilege and wasteful, something that should have nourished our country squandered and turned into rubbish: unwanted, purposeless, of no use to anyone.”
I picked this up on a whim because I'd been drawn to the haunting cover! I loved it! A perfect duo-perspective domestic thriller that lays out the complexities of womanhood and motherhood. Plenty of twists and suspense! By the climax I was at the edge of my seat! If you enjoyed books like Celeste Ng's Little Fires Everywhere but prefer a story with faster pacing, higher stakes, and/or are drawn to books with narratives that deal with marriage, sacrifice, and international adoption, you'll love this! ...more

The Whispers follows four women--Whitney, Blair, Rebecca, and Mara-- living seemingly breezy lives in a well-to-do neighborhood. But in spite of being housewives, mothers, and/or working women, our characters are riddled with guilt, envy, and insecurities. This is a book about the complexities of motherhood and marriage, and when a tragic accident connects the complicated lives of these four women, they gradually discover that the grass is not greener on any of their sides.
This was yet another psychological domestic thriller by Ashley Audrain that was devourable and compelling. I knew I'd like this book after loving Audrain's last release, The Push! We're given brief chapters, multi-perspective storytelling, drama, and dark secrets. The struggles of womanhood were felt heavily amongst these women. I felt their desires to want it all, the wish to be everywhere at once, the yearning to feel needed by their husbands, by their children, by the people who count on them at work.
I had the privilege of reading the ARC for this book over Mother's Day weekend which felt fitting! But if you enjoy books like Good Neighbors by Sarah Langan, Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty or TV shows like Desperate Housewives, you can look forward to picking up and enjoying this book when it releases in June!...more
