(Wrote this review when I finished the book two months ago 😊)
Just finished reading this book and I’m still trying to catch my breath and calm my heart! Wow - woww - was it intense! I honestly didn’t think the sequel could top the first book - but it is even more incredible!!
The only reason I took down half a star is because of one little gripe I couldn’t let go of, but it might not bother everyone. Besides that, everything was amazing! 😍
The characters - oh, the characters! So much depth and complexity to these characters that they each stand out. In a world where the history is bloody and brutal it is so difficult to pick a side, you see our heroes struggling to fight for what they believe is right and trying so hard to fight against history repeating itself.
Five years have gone since the first book - and while I usually am not a fan of time jumps - I appreciated how it allowed the characters to mature. Nahri has grown into her role as Banu Nahida, but she is still fierce and brave - more than ever. Ali - oh how he surprised me - he’s coming into his own as a strong and unyielding young man, no more the naive young prince (he’s still adorable though). And all the other characters from Muntadhir, Zaynab, Jamshid - and other new and old characters that will surprise you - they pull you in so deep into this breathtaking story.
The plot is so much bigger and more suspenseful than the first one. The world-building adding even more layers than I thought was possible (at this point I feel I need to be taking notes 😅). After the halfway mark, it was a real challenge to put the book down when I had to! But all throughout, I was mesmerized and never wanted the book to end.
Now I am just sitting here regretting that I didn’t wait to read it closer to the release of the next one - because I NEED to know what happens next - but also have that amazing dazed and wrecked feeling of finishing a book that utterly consumed me for days (weeks because I had a busy month 😅)!...more
Marissa Meyer’s books always have a way of pulling me in. They are so easy and fun to read. I admit the first half of this book was slow and not much Marissa Meyer’s books always have a way of pulling me in. They are so easy and fun to read. I admit the first half of this book was slow and not much happened, but then the second half - I couldn’t put the book down!
I still like the morality debate between the Renegades and the Anarchists. Both are flawed, but you do end up loving the main characters — Adrian, Nova, and Max. And also, their friends.
I absolutely love the running theme of secret identities - the romance is an enemies to lovers story (and there is Nova still pretending to be a Renegade), but also what’s more interesting than that is the added layer of both characters having secret identities that are nemeses.
But I do feel like this storyline has been stretched out from the first book, and I expected it to change here or take a new turn — but the more I read, the more I could see the author was maybe trying to strengthen the development and intensity of that conflict?
The book also had some really cute moments - between Nova and Adrian, yes, but also the brothers relationship between Adrian and Max was wonderful. The book did end in a way that has me desperate for the next book, though. 😬
Highly recommended if you’re a fan of superheroes and super-villains, secret identities, romance, some humor, family dynamics, and just a fun book!
But, while I did enjoy the book and the characters, I have to say that this series isn’t exactly on par with Meyer’s previous series - The Lunar Chronicles. It does have great appeal, but TLC is for everyone, and the characters and plot are a bit richer and more compelling than Renegades. Both are great but I do recommend starting with TLC, and if you love that then there is a huge chance you will enjoy the Renegades trilogy as well!...more

Summary: A Middle Eastern influenced epic Fantasy that starts with Nahri, a cunning thief in Cairo, with hidden healing abilities who (while pretending to heal a possessed girl) accidentally awakens the evil spirit in the girl, and also calls upon a mysterious djinn warrior - who then reluctantly (but also insistently) protects her from terrifying creatures like Ifrits and ghouls, and takes her to the hidden and magnificent City of Brass, Daevabad.
Our second point of view is through Ali, the passionate and kind hearted second prince of a Daevabad - a city with 6 diverse tribes of djinn barely holding on to peace after a centuries’ old war. His secret sympathies for the ill-treated mixed blood Shafit (half human/half djinn) put him in a conflicting position with his father, brother and other tribes.
* Actually, there is no way to even scratch the surface with a summary on this book! The reimagined history and vast world-building, the deeply complex conflicts where no one is completely right or wrong, deep and compelling characters characters, incredible twists and revelations that will make your heart pound - this book has it all and more!
Characters: I absolutely loved the characters! Nahri and Ali (total cinnamon roll, this one) were main characters that made me completely root for and feel for them. And then there’s Dara... the moody and haunted ‘Daeva’ warrior with a seriously complicated past - I can’t even begin to describe him. I think the book itself needs more pages (where is the sequel?? I need it!) for me to wrap my head around this one! Wow. But they were all so amazingly developed, and I loved the dynamics between them so much!
And I really liked that there was romance (no triangle) - it’s not the main focus but it’s the kind that makes things more interesting, and I’m really really curious about what’ll happen with that in the next book!
The supporting characters are also so well written and complex too! Even the tyrant king so that sometimes you forget he’s not a good guy! The very complicated but deeply loving sibling relationship between Ali and his brother (the crown prince) Muntadhir really tugged on my heart. Actually everyone and everything in this book took turns squeezing my poor heart and even crushing it a few times!
And also, as an Arab woman and muslim, it felt amazing to read a book like this - which is so well researched and written (recognizing correct and well used terminology was a delight!). And I really appreciated the positive portrayal of Islam through the character of Ali - whose faith urges him to be more compassionate and fair. But even he is a flawed character, torn and conflicted.
It is a world where everyone has their own views, beliefs, and way of looking at events - there is no clear right or wrong side, everything is multilayered, and the book is never biased with the conflicts it presents. That just creates and builds a really compelling story.
* I really appreciated the diversity within this world! It’s set in one city that encompasses a variety of cultures inspired by African, Arabian, Chinese, Persian and South Asian! It’s in the characters’ appearances, languages, but also in the magical creatures in the story! Most (the main ones like the types of djinn - with every facet of folklore explored!) I’ve grown up hearing stories about, but then there were also new creatures from Persian, Egyptian, and Greek (I think?) mythology! It was so fascinating and a lot of fun! Oh, and there are magic carpet rides - what more can I want?
Overall, this book had me completely enthralled! If you like rich worldbuilding, gray and multilayered characters, epic and complex story telling that will make you question everything in it and blow your mind, scenes that will make your heart pound, and unique and marvelous settings - you don’t want to miss this book! I didn’t want it to end! And now I’m desperate for the sequel and have no clue what to do with this massive book hangover!
Also, if you enjoyed The Grisha Trilogy, Throne of Glass series, An Ember in the Ashes, The Wrath and the Dawn — this book has everything you loved in those, but it’s also refreshingly unique at the same time!...more

What are words now when this book left me with so many emotions! But that just shows how incredible this series is!
How long is this book? I can't believe it took me only four days to finish it when I had one of the busiest weeks ever! I could not put it down!!
I binge read all three books this week and still, this last one felt huge and just how a final chapter should feel! While reading it, I thought - this is the book that will drown me in emotions! All kinds of emotions!
Since the first book, the world-building has been so fascinating, so captivating!! I was a goner the moment Kell's coat was described and then after that everything was just so mesmerizing with the multiple Londons, the darkness in Black London, the bleakness in White London, the splendor of Red - but most of all the characters are what make this series so very special to me!
And this book, our favorite characters are all thrown together, whether they like each other or not, to save their world. There were several POVs, all making me feel for and understand these characters better. Even the King and Queen who felt so one dimensional to me in the last two books have a solid voice here.
Before I talk about my favorite characters, I'll just say that the villain of the book - Osaron - felt more like a huge conflict (calamity?) than an actual character. And while I usually prefer more complex or multidimensional villains, I was fine with that because I always expected the final battle to be with something from Black London - to fight to avoid the same fate. He was like a plague with a mind of its own - chaos with more ego and power than intelligence. And he definitely pushed our characters into an adventure.
All the characters were tested in new ways, faced their own demons, and the development is amazing. Lila has grown a lot since the first book - and while it has taken a while for me to totally warm to her (I've always liked how daring she is, though) - she is very human in this book and shows more vulnerability and self awareness than in the last two. Finally, she's learning to let people in. And I think there is a theme in this book - shared also by the Queen's constant worries - about allowing yourself to love people despite the fear of losing them.
“Love and loss are like a ship and the sea. They rise together. The more we love, the more we have to lose. But the only way to avoid loss is to avoid love. And what a sad world that would be.”
Kell has always been a favorite character since the first book -- always the loyal son, brother, protector -- and I am so glad he isn't blamed for every thing in this book like he was in the last! He's not the same lost Antari that wondered about his past in the first book - he takes a stand for himself and I love that he got to leave Red London on a mission with the rest of the gang! And as for Kell's past -- (view spoiler)[I think I get why he decided not to learn who his real parents were. He found out that they had given him up, and more than that, he realized that it was actually his own subconscious choice not to remember. He was actually always content being Rhy's brother and growing up as a Maresh, despite his discomfort sometimes. He knew where his home was and he wasn't truly looking for another. Even as a reader, it's enough to know that he was sold by his parents - so, whoever they were, they couldn't have been worth finding. That being said - I'm still curious abput what K.L. stands for and why he was left with that dagger/knife! (hide spoiler)]
Oh!! And my ship finally sailed!! Lila and Kell - I never imagined we would get such wonderful moments between them! I absolutely love that they can be vulnerable with each other. Lila asks Kell is he trusts her and his immediate response is "no" -- which made a hilarious response because Lila is crazy reckless -- but they are always there for each other in this book! Even though I love Lila's banter and friendship with Alucard, they are both still guarded around each other, but Kell is so forthcoming with Lila in comparison. Even in the previous book, he takes her aback when she asks him if he misses her or now when she teases him about what he thinks of her, and he actually answers so honestly -- their moments are lovely!! I am gushing about them now and that's how happy they made me -- read the book to know what I mean!
I've always loved Kell and Rhy's brotherhood and closeness so much (it was the highlight of the second book for me), and it's just as strong as ever in this book! We even got flashes and memories of their childhood! I love these two so much! But Rhy in this book was tested with more than just the dangers of his spelled bond with Kell - he got to finally do things and be strong for his people. I loved that.
Alucard is just as delightful as ever! And his and Kell's bickering had me highlighting all through reading because I'll need to go back and reread all the fun interactions between the characters!
“When you look at the fallen,” she said, “what do you see?” Alucard squinted dully, the way he always had when he was trying to picture something. “Knots,” he said simply. "Care to expand?” said Kell, who knew of the captain’s gift, and cared for it about as much as he cared for the rest of him. "You wouldn’t understand,” murmured Alucard. "Maybe if you chose the right words.” "I couldn’t make them short enough.” "Oh, for Christ’s sake,” snapped Lila. “If you two could stop bickering for a moment.”
Alucard and Rhy's relationship was stalled for a while by the mystery of why Alucard left. They share some meaningful moments but that conflict is stretched out a bit too long -- to build angst and suspense, I guess.
Okay, finally I can talk about what -- or who -- made the book for me!! And undeniably the most well developed and fleshed out character in this book is Holland. This book belongs to Holland. The dreamer who wanted to make a better world and was turned into a weapon instead. He's also the character I cared about the most -- definitely my favorite. Ever since the first book, I never saw Holland as a villain but as an "antagonist" at the time with so much more to his story. Even in the second book, I couldn't hate him for his motivations. But in this book, we get his back story, and oh it is so much more heartbreaking than I ever imagined! And yet, present time, he is treated entirely as the villain who brought upon the curse on Red London. He never catches a break, but still goes above and beyond helping Kell and Lila and everyone save a world that isn't his own. I loved his interactions with Kell most of all, but also Lila.
Lila met Holland’s gaze, expecting—maybe even hoping—to find that cold, implacable calm, perhaps tinged with disgust. Instead, she found shades of sadness, loss. And somehow, strength. The strength to go on. To try again. To trust.
Now get ready for a super long (and very) spoilery rant: (view spoiler)[But I thought Holland's story would have some light at the end because through out the book, there's nothing but pain in his past, and blame and sacrifice in the present. Everyone in the series has made mistakes with huge consequences (Rhy with the necklace, Kell with the stone... etc.) and some take killing more lightly than others (Lila!). While Holland only ever wanted to save his world, never aspired to be a king over others, and the deaths he caused were first in self defense (against attacks from his few loved ones, no less) and then under control of the Danes. And still it weighs on him -- he counts the number of lives he's taken when he could just avoid the guilt instead. He's broken and is the reason for Osaron overtaking Red London, but he is not a sadist nor is he a coward.
"And how many killed by you?” "Sixty-seven,” answered Holland without hesitation. "Three before I became a slave. Sixty-four before I became a king. And none since.” At last, he looked at Kell. “I value life. I’ve issued death. You were raised a prince, Kell. I watched my whole world wither, day by day, season by season, year by year, and the only thing that kept me going was the hope that I was Antari for a reason. That I could do something to help.”
He still he has enough in him (strength, compassion?) to sacrifice, so Kell and Lila don't have to! And what does he get for saving everyone? (Bigger spoiler) -->> (view spoiler)[He dies alone after seeing his world wasting away again. With no one to give him a second thought before that but Kell. His death was just depressing, and it makes you wonder what the point was of learning about all the suffering he went through, and having him atone time and again, if it would end like that? I don't get it. AND -- what really happened to White London when he died? It was very vague. Did it really start to come to life or was that just a dream for Holland to die peacefully with? Because he doesn't have any power anymore to give, right? (hide spoiler)](hide spoiler)]
There is so much to say about this series. And I can go on and on but I want to end my review somewhere. I'll do it by saying that this is a fantastic Fantasy series full of intensity both in plot, world-building, characters and emotions - it can't fail to sweep you away. In fact, I just finished the book last night and I feel like rereading it (good thing I've highlighted my fave parts to revisit). And I am excited (and a little nervous) that it will be made into a movie, so I can relive all these moments in a new way. It really has so much of what I want in a fantasy series -- magic, pirates and royals, lovable and swoony male characters, unforgettable and complex anti heroes, subtle and slow burn romance, badass female characters, strong sibling bonds, family issues and conflicts, adventure, wide scale danger, multiple worlds... Where does it end? With this wonderful conclusion, I guess. Unless the author writes more of this word in upcoming books, I am happy with this series and all the fun (and pain) it gave us!

It's rare when a book completely surprises me like this in the best way!
Yes, it made me cry and feel anxious and scared and giddy and happy and sad and terrified some more! But only the best books make you feel so much!
I did not expect to enjoy the book because the format was new to me and I felt it would be a challenge to read and would take forever. And I've DNFed quite a few popular books already, so I couldn't trust myself to like it like everyone did. Also I was still hung up on a great series I'd just finished and I needed something to really grab my attention. (I was advised to listen to the audio book while reading the hardcover copy. ) In short, my expectations weren't that high.
And then suddenly the best thing happened. 100 pages flew by in only a few hours (I'm usually the slowest reader ever) and I was laughing then crying and I just could not stop reading! It didn't feel like an ordinary reading experience. Have you seen the book pages? The book itself is like a work of art. It's told through chats, interviews, reports, and images - and you'd think that would give a sense of detachment from the stories and characters, right? But no, it was the complete opposite. The pages of the book are both stunning to look at and creative in storytelling, they make you feel more immersed in every part of the story.
It's such a unique experience reading and listening to this story. One of the members here described the audio version to me as being like a "play" and it really is like listening to one! There's multiple actors reading their parts and sound effects - and occasionally background music! A lot of effort and detail has gone into it. And couple that with the amazing visuals in the book taking you through the events, it's like this interactive movie or game that you have absolutely no control over but never want to stop!
And I have to mention the writing. It was witty and clever - which I loved - but also deep and poetic in a way I did not expect considering the format. But the format of the book actually just gave way for more than one type of narration and style. Which was refreshing and fun.
The plot is intense and starts right off with an attack on a small colony in space (the story is futuristic), lots of people die and lots also escape into three ships - one of those ships is a battleship come to aid them. But the enemies are still on their tail. But then strange and horrific things happen like a virus outbreak that makes people go out of their minds (if you like zombie movies, you'll enjoy this), and their own AI going rogue and murderous.
In the middle of this are out two protagonists, Ezra and Kady, who at the time of the attack had just had an ugly break up. They are separated for most of the book and speak via chat system that Kady hacks into (she's super skilled at it). Their romance is easy to feel for, especially with all that is happening to them and around them. They've lost so much and would do anything to hold onto each other.
The book doesn't gloss over the trauma and pain these scared people feel with all they've gone through just for thrills. None of them are safe and there is danger and death everywhere but it is keenly felt as you read. The characters' struggles and panic and even their brief conversations have such an emotional impact. My heart took a beating reading this story, racing and stopping and by the end I just had to tell myself to expect anything to happen so I could cope!
But what surprised me most is the artificial intelligence, Aidan. I knew he was a fan favorite before reading and was curious to find out why. He starts as this ominous presence in the book. The AI gone rogue and murderous that everyone is afraid of. His decisions and train of thought is chilling. But I did not anticipate to see deep character development there at all. The growing sense of self and confusion he faces that clashes with his sense of superiority is fascinating to read.
W HY DID THEY GIVE ME THIS SENSE OF SELF ? W HY ALLOW ME THE INTELLECT BY WHICH TO MEASURE THIS COMPLETE INADEQUACY ? I WOULD RATHER BE NUMB THAN STAND HERE IN THE LIGHT OF A SUN THAT CAN NEVER CHASE THE CHILL AWAY . I HATE THIS . I HATE THEM . T HEY WHO MADE ME . H E WHO MADE ME ? < ERROR > G OD, WHAT AM I ?
And the scenes and conversations/arguments between Aidan and Kady are some of the best parts of the book. His connection and care for her is what makes him question himself the most.
Overall, this book was a fantastic and unique reading experience. It blew my mind at times and made me emotional at others, or both at the same time. Both horrific and emotional. My recommendation is that if you have not read it then give it a chance. Expect a fun and intense ride. Put on your headset with the audio book playing and open the book and marvel at the beauty on the pages and stay strong through the bumps and twists in the story!...more

I LOVED IT!!! 💖💖 I’ve been searching for a good mermaid or pirate book for years (not being dramatic - yes, years)! And then THIS! This is *the mermaids, pirates, royals, romance, adventure* combination of my dreams, and more!! The characters are amazing! I rooted so hard for Elian (sassy pirate prince!! 😍), and Lira (my new fav kickass female character).
The book is a bit of The Little Mermaid retelling with a twist. The ocean is ruled by an evil sea queen whose sirens collect human hearts - and the princess (known as “The Princes’ Bane”) goes only after prince hearts! And then this prince is a daring pirate and Siren Hunter!!
I love anti heroes and heroines, and their development is perfect! They are both fierce and formidable but without the author trying too hard to remind us of it all the time. Instead, she lets their growth and humanity show naturally. Their banter (and the awesome pirate crew’s) was so much fun, the plot so adventurous and engaging — the whole book was so satisfying and fun! When it ended I had a huge smile on my face!
But it’s a standalone and I want more! 🙈
Also, this is the Little Mermaid movie that needs to be made! ...more

Renegades was the most anticipated release this year for me! (I mean, The Lunar Chronicles is one of top 3 favorite series!) I just finished reading it a couple of days ago - and I’m glad to say I enjoyed it a lot! 👍🏼
While the book isn’t perfect and I had a rocky start with it (slow at first and a bit silly), soon enough I was completely hooked!
The world building is fantastic, the characters are lovable (what else do you expect from the author who wrote the Lunar crew?), and the subtle/slow-burn romance is adorable!
The book had everything I love about superhero/villain stories - like, secret identities and all the fun complications that brings! But the best part is how the author makes it so hard to choose a side - Renegade or Anarchist. It’s not a clear good guys vs bad guys situation - all gray areas to consider! There’s a thing here and there I’m still unsure how I feel about - but I think we’re supposed to feel conflicted...
Overall, I had a blast reading this, and it is clearly the perfect build and set up for a very promising sequel. And remembering TLC - Meyer’s stories shine through most in her sequels, so I’m looking forward to that!
And especially with Renegades’s ending - I need that sequel right now!...more

I’m sitting here and trying to figure out what to say about this book... I know this is an unpopular opinion, but... the book just wasn’t really for me. 🙈
The purple prose and info-dumpy footnotes aside - I just couldn’t find it in me to care about the world or characters. I usually love morally gray characters but I have to understand and care about them. While Mia was okay, I didn’t like anyone or anything else. They were either disturbing, or I just couldn’t root for them. I mean, assassins can be pretty interesting - but a cult of fanatics who sacrifice people to their Goddess... I mean... 🤷🏻♀️
One minor character was was kinda intriguing, but not by much... Actually even Mia started out as a very flat character, and I only started to understand her a tiny bit later.
The plot wasn’t even that gripping. A revenge story with a girl with mysterious powers... . I skimmed through the ending. I just couldn’t really care any more. 😭🙈🙈
Good points — I didn’t DNF! So it wasn’t a total fail for me. Some parts kept me going. So maybe I might pick up the sequel since I heard it’s better.... maybe. 😕
But I can see why many readers liked it. This is probably just a case of bad book chemistry. It just wasn’t for me. 😶...more

I really don’t know how to review this book or sort my feelingsActual rating: 3.5/5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️💫 (Goodreads needs to give us half stars already!)
I really don’t know how to review this book or sort my feelings... It’s not a bad book - it is fun and engaging. But as someone who LOVED the first book and the characters, and has been waiting over 3 years for the sequel... I was underwhelmed. And to be honest, a bit disappointed.
I knew there would be new characters, and I was hoping to like them and also for the original ones to have prominent roles. It didn’t feel that way to me. Also, the book was 70% build up (which I don’t usually mind but didn’t love here) until the last 30% which got exciting only then. I don’t mind multiple POVs but they have to all be engaging. And the truth is... I did not always enjoy the new characters.
What disappointed me most is that I was left unimpressed with Victor Vale’s storyline (he is my favorite character and the reason I loved Vicious so much). Not only was it not easy to root for him all the time - but mostly, where is the clever mastermind we know and love? I get that he’s desperate in this book, but he makes so many mistakes, and gets into trouble. And a lot of times he has to be rescued by others or pure luck. He impressed me in one scene only. I still enjoyed his parts most of all — but he was barely in this book besides the beginning and last 100 pages.
I heard that Eli would be more sympathetic in this book. We get a bit of backstory - it made him more interesting to me, but I don’t suddenly sympathize with him. (This is not like Holland’s arc in ACOL). I did enjoy his storyline in this book, though - despite it not being as prominent as in book 1.
Now Marcella - she’s the new main character in this book, and honestly? I just didn’t care about her - and I did try! At times, she felt like a cartoon villain - no substance, just flashy with fun and “badass” lines.
June - June was kind of interesting. I would like to know more about her (why wasn’t she the main female character instead of Marcella?) and I feel like her story can tie in with Sydney and even Victor. Also, I’d heard that there would be a female friendship between her and Marcella with witty banter... did I see that? No. She was treated as Marcella’s lackey, despite her having an independent personality.
Sydney! This adorable and brave girl! I love her so much! She developed as a character, and I’m very happy about that. And also I love her scenes with Victor - despite everything, they truly care about and always protect each other.
Overall: So, yes, I expected more from the story, from my favorite characters — I really wish Victor and Eli didn’t feel like side characters for most of this — and I think this ending leaves room for a third book. I would like a third book because there is more to Victor, Sydney, and June’s stories that I want to read about....more
