I’ve yet to read a book by Renee Ahdieh that I didn’t enjoy! This was a really good sequel! It’s different from the first book, and takes place in the city and royal palace — where Mariko works her way into the court as the prince’s fiancee, while secretly working to free Okami and undermine the emperor.
Mariko definitely showed what a brave and intelligent character she is. I also liked the moments of friendship between Yumi and Mariko, and the sibling dynamics in the book between brothers/sisters. The romantic moments between Mariko and Okami were brief, but I love their interactions, their banter, the chemistry.
But overall ...for a final book, I do wish there was more. Besides the fact that the ending was a bit rushed, and there were quite a few things that were - not all of them “unresolved” - but left to the imagination... I also wanted more grand moments for the characters (especially Okami, and even more from Mariko) to really shine, more action in the final parts that is shown rather than we are told has happened, more development for the side characters like Kenshin and Yumi and Amaya (who served no real purpose at all). Raiden, though, did get interesting development leading up to the end...
Actually, the more I think about it, there’s enough things left unanswered (to me, at least) or missed opportunities that could have fit in another 50-100 pages 🤔
So, yes, it wasn’t perfect, but I enjoyed it, and I will always adore these characters. And I can’t wait to know what Renee Ahdieh will write next!
(After thinking more about it) All that said, I think I just went into this with really high expectations! It really does have its share of great moments for the characters. I’m probably just greedy! So, if you liked Flame in the Mist, I definitely recommend you read the sequel!...more
