Interesting, but would have preferred more information on less women. This also should have been far more diverse than it is, there are plenty of books like this focusing solely on white women. The tone of the book is also a little chatty. ...more

Following the intriguing life of Rachel Charlotte Williams Briggs, this biography the story of a women involved with revolution and government. It was really interesting to find out about Charlotte, whom I had never heard of before. This focuses on the murder of Lord Darnley, Mary Queen of Scots 2nd husband and how this helped to secure her downfall. It's packed with information, but does not have any real flow to it. Some interesting points are made, but the authors opinion is forefront and no concession is made for this. ...more

Its an interesting insight into some of our VC heroes. The index with names at the back is helpful when looking for specific names. However it, despite its huge size, does not recount the story of every VC hero as it claims. The main reason I was interested in this book was to use it as a reference guide, if I came across a name I would be able to look it up and find out more about the person, rather than reading the whole thing. I came across a name in Coniston only to find that they had not been included in the book, this was not helpful at all, luckily I managed to find information on him online....more

This is a clever look into some unknown (and some well known) women who were alive in the regency era. The biographies are short, but give a good overview of each woman. The author started writing with a blog focused on regency history (http://www.regencyhistory.net/), this is fascinating, but writing needed to be adapted more to fit into a non-fiction book. Sometimes it feels like an overload information.

The setting for this P&P update is very clever, all of the main characters are at a boarding school together. The style of writing is engaging and very funny at times. The alternating pov's give an extra dimension to the story telling. I'm less impressed with how closely it sticks to the original, some of the events and language used don't really fit the modern setting. ...more

This is a fascinating book that looks at all of the hidden treasures around London. The author obviously knows the city well and takes you on a comprehensive tour. The book will delight those that do not know London and those that live their equally. I have visited London many times and have lived there, this book still gives me yet another insight into that beautiful city. The writing could have done with being cut down, this is going to be a book that people dip in and out of rather than read cover to cover. It also would have been nice if the pictures were in colour. ...more

A really interesting book, full of lots of useful tips. I would have liked it to be a bit more organised, with entries that are purely definitions separate from those that give places to look for information. Overall, an insightful book that I hope to use in the future to help me with research.

This was kind of a meh read, I liked the storyline but didn't feel completely connected to it. I love the prose of the author and she is brilliantly descriptive. This is a very interesting book that goes into different famous aircraft crashes over the years. It covers Amelia Earheart, Amy Johnson, the Duke of Kent, Glenn Miller and a section on the Bristol Beufants. The author has obviously spent a lot of time researching each disappearance and has an extensive knowledge of flight due to being a navigator in the RAF. Some of the information provided in the book is very specific and can be confusing as it's not fully explained. The author also focuses a lot on their own interests and does at times start talking about his own carer when it's not strictly on subject. However, I did learn a lot from this book and want to follow up what I have learned in other places.

This book covers all of the soldiers that were shot on the western front under the British Army Act (ie those that were serving with British units). The majority were shot for desertion or cowardice and this book goes into the details (where known) of their unfair trials. A lot of these soldiers were clearly showing signs of shell shock/PTSD.
The Armed Forces Act 2006 pardoned all of those who were shot for desertion or cowardice. A memorial has been built at the National Memorial Arboretum to commemorate them.
