A wel 3.5 stars I still haven’t decided what to think about this book. The writing is gorgeous. Numerous quotes you can get from this book. Solid idea. A well architected world. Also a book that is truly about books, how exhilarating is that. But The pace was off. I didn’t mind the slow pace during the middle part unlike many but I’m contrast to the end, the revelations could’ve been better styled. It’s like I was running at the end from a reality to another and not in a very smooth way. The characters were decent but the romance wasn’t good. It would’ve been so much better if the link was friendship and then later on a romance developed. I won’t say much about this because it’s linked to major spoilers but the idea remains that it wasn’t well executed. Or even needed. ...more |

There’s st 2.5 stars This book was fun to read and I couldn’t put it down. I don’t know if it’s a standalone but the last chapter wrapped up the story. There’s still much to explore in the world Rueckert created. I can easily imagine another story told from a different character’s pov. Rounded up my rating to 3 stars because this seems to be a debut. Needs lots of work but not the worst start. After her sister was murdered, princess Jiara decides to do anything to catch her killer. Because you see, ghosts who don’t get a closure, walk earth and haunt their loved ones until they do what’s necessary for their souls to rest. In this case, it’s catching Scilla’s killer. Except Scilla was engaged to the king, Raffar, of a foreign land and spent her life preparing for that role. Now Jiara is forced to fill her role and marry the king who speaks a language she doesn’t understand. But you see, the evidence leads to an assassin from the country she’s destined to be their queen. What follows is Jiara trying to solve the murder of her sister while trying to learn a new language, be a queen for her new people, and uncovering hidden schemes along the way. Also, ghosts here are really vengeful, it’s not just some superstitions. The characters were easy to like. The book is old from Jiara’s point of view, first-person. What I liked the most that this book features a dyslexic character. They didn’t know what’s dyslexia in her days and Jiara knew she wasn’t stupid. Yet, no matter how hard she tried, she never could study or read like her sister. Another interesting aspect was the language barrier. I have only read a couple of books where the language was a real barrier between love interests from different countries. The book was also fast-paced and entertaining. The world-building was developed well enough for such a book and the author can easily write a sequel but maybe about someone from a different country. The story is pretty much wrapped for our characters here. Now to the cons, while the secondary characters were okay, Raffar had as much personality as a leaf. He wasn’t interesting, he was nice if anything. But not being able to communicate with Jiara worked against them. I saw the chemistry at first but I quickly lost interest in him. His perspective wasn’t needed but maybe he would’ve had more character development? He was overly simplistic. Again, language didn't help here. Also I wish Jiara had some hobby because she wasn't much developed herself either. What did she spend her days doing at the palace in her homeland? Sure, she loved nature but she was also meh. Also, since both are ruling families, we didn't know much about the people's situation in their country. Another thing I didn’t particularly appreciate is that this book featured something I don’t like. I don’t think it counts as a spoiler but I’ll refrain to mention it until the book is out. Let’s say it played an important part in this book and had some significance. It wasn’t used as a mere plot device but had its meaning and role in the story. Which is very rare. Still, I’m no fan especially since it happened more than once.(view spoiler)[ I like the dead to stay.. dead. No reincarnation. And while in this book it was an essential part of the plot, it’s still a huge pet peeve of mine regardless how’s it’s usex. (hide spoiler)] Briefly said, I recommend this book if you’re looking for a light YA fantasy read without intending to make new commitments to any series. The story is fun but nothing extraordinary. It can be easily read in one sitting. I found it overly simplistic sometimes (especially the events leading towards the end) and not very surprising. The plot was predictable but I wish the characters were better developed. It wasn't a book that left anything with me and nothing memorable in this genre. Thanks to NetGalley and publishers for the arc in exchange for an honest review. ...more |

The first chapter opens up with “They found the3.5 stars I was excited to read this book after seeing the positive reviews and it didn’t disappoint! The first chapter opens up with “They found the bodies on a Tuesday.and the story doesn’t slow down. Matt Pines is surprised when an FBI agent, Sarah Keller, stops by and the last thing he imagines learning is that his family was found dead in Mexico. Although the Mexican authorities claim it was a gas leak, evidence suggests otherwise. What follows is Keller to find more about what happened and Matt trying to catch up with his new reality, until his discovers that his family might have been murdered. The book is told from several perspectives. In the present, we have Matt and agent Keller. But we also read about the past (the days before the accident) from Evan, Olivia (the parents), and Maggie (the daughter) perspectives. But you might wonder, what’s different about them? You see, the eldest son, Danny, has been charged with murder seven years ago. And if that wasn’t enough, a hit documentary was made claiming Danny is innocent and in fact, he didn’t kill Charlotte, his girlfriend who was killed horrifically. So the Pines’ case received more spotlight because of their fame. I won’t discuss the plot much further and I’ll leave it to you to discover and try to guess what happened. While I didn’t see the plot twists coming, I did guess a suspicious.. let’s call it “element”. I’m getting better at this :D I love how Alex Finlay constructed the family. Evan the passionate. Maggie, the smart and mature kid (I loved her, she didn’t deserve this fate at all L not that anyone does.. but you get what I mean), and Olivia, the mother with her own inner demons. Danny was the promising child and Matt always lived in his shadow. Even after his incarceration, Evan was all too focused on proving his son’s innocence. It was Tommy’s birth that saved the family after Danny’s case. My only complaint is that I did not connect with them as much as I would've liked to. I’m not a big fan of the “before” and “after” stories because they usually are a cheap way in my opinion to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. And the before part rarely interest me. Not here. It was necessary to give color to the dead family members. To understand what Matt was going through. How this news hit Danny. And simply, to feel the story. Also, the before part wasn’t a mere filler. You see, Maggie got a tip and her dad had an unbelievable call from Mexico, hence the “vacation”. Overall, this was a good mystery/thriller and I couldn’t stop reading it. It's not a perfect mystery. Not even a great one and yes would not happen irl but I enjoyed it. I'm not 100% satisfied with the ending but Every Last Fear was a page-turner that kept me anxious and worried. Although I knew the Pines will die in Mexico, I kept hoping they don’t. Somehow. Especially Maggie. Thanks to Head of Zeus and Netgalley for sending me an e-arc of this book. ...more |

3.5 stars When I first read the premise of The Descent of the Drowned, I was immediately intrigued. A book set in a colonized Indo-Persian world and in 3.5 stars When I first read the premise of The Descent of the Drowned, I was immediately intrigued. A book set in a colonized Indo-Persian world and inspired by pre-Islamic Arabian mythology? Please give it to me now. It is not every day that I come across a book inspired by a mix of different Asian cultures. Before I start my review, I want to mention that this book contains many events that might upset certain readers. TW/CW (including but not limited to): rape (not explicit), self-harm (in the past), suicide, death of a parent, explicit violence, gore, drugs addiction (forced in a way), (child) sex and human trafficking, transphobia, and prostitution is one of the main plotlines. The Descent of the Drowned tells the story of Roma who was dedicated to goddess Lamia since childhood and raised in the temple. In a world divided to zaat or castes, when the time comes, she’ll be auctioned to a patron – of the high zaat- to service him. But Roma always has hated how women had no voice, especially the sacred slaves of the goddess. Deserters are hunt down and killed. But she isn’t so ready to accept this fate. On the other hand, we have Leviathan, the bastard son of the Firawn. Trained since childhood, he becomes one of the deadliest soldiers under the Firawn’s command -who by the way, is obsessed with harvesting magic. Roma and Levi’s fate will interwind and shatter everything they know and change they know about themselves and their world.
“What I wanted was to spread awareness about the sacred prostitution, caste system, and half-creature perception and abuse of transgenders in South Asia; the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya People; the exploitation of once-resourceful places like the Middle East and Afghanistan; the occupation of and war crimes against Palestine; and the human trafficking of adults and children across the globe.” These are all important problems that I believe authors should use to raise awareness of them in their novels. I wish to see more books based on these issues because they deserve more attention. And honestly, it’s what I loved the most about this book. And the fact it’s written by a Muslim woman who wears hijab.

Some stories need a saga but more often than not, authors drag their books to become trilogies at the very least. This book easily managed to deliver an enjoyable story with likable characters in less than 350 pages. The story is set in a world with magic, which was stolen from its rightful holders around 100 years ago. The Thungraves hold now the corrupted magic and rule the kingdom who has suffered ever since they usurped the crown. Mara, vintner’s daughter, discovered that she has magical abilities and was secretly using it not knowing that she’s the heir to a stolen throne. When one of the lords finds out about her, he manipulates her to get back the throne. On the other side of the story, we have Alac, the prince who doesn’t approve of his father’s policies. He was never interested in his position if anything, he’d like to have his own vineyard. This book would appeal in particular to all wine lovers, who aren’t interested just in drinking wine, but also in the whole process of making it. It’s the first book I read that featured such sideline focus and I liked it. The characters were likable and cute. This book in my opinion works best for young readers new to this genre but can also be enjoyed by any YA fan. Mara was level-headed, loyal, and smart. She didn’t back down but is also full of compassion. Alac is a good match for her. I couldn’t connect with the characters and their romance didn’t make me feel much, sadly. The plot was fast, I finished it rather quickly. It’s been a while since I’ve had one of the “one more chapter” cases and suddenly it was 4 am and my eyes were watering... I finished the book first thing in the morning. The downside of having this book short is that the world wasn’t developed well enough and the religion part was unnecessary because it wasn’t handled in depth. There was also talk of wars and other nations but it was only mentioned briefly, I would’ve liked it if they were more explored. This is what you might call generic YA with romance but at least the author had the characters admit several times that they didn’t know each other for long how they can feel that much for the other person (admit to other people I mean). The plot was also simplistic, again it’s less than 350 pages, but maybe more pages to develop the story and the romance, would’ve benefited this book. It was nothing new sadly (except for the wine part for me but still not worth it). The story wasn’t what I’d call memorable but a fun book that can be read in one sitting without worrying about committing to yet another series. Thanks to NetGalley for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review. ...more |

One of the reasons I wait before writing my reviews (other than free time) is that usually, when a few days pass after reading the book, I can process it better especially the impression the book left on me. Many times I enjoy a book but upon reflection, it either didn’t leave anything with me or I notice some faults I didn’t care about before. I originally rated this book 4 stars but I’m dropping my rating to 3 stars because while reading, this is a sci-fi and I rarely read sci-fi, I assumed I might not be appreciating this because I don’t understand everything that’s going (one of the things I hate about not being a native English speaker is that I don’t know sometimes if the lack of comprehension on certain things is my fault or the author’s).

Since this is a new series by John Gwynne, The Shadow of the Gods was one of my most anticipated book releases this year. I’ve been eyeing Malice since 2016 but didn’t get the chance to read it. Considering the hype and praise surrounding Gwynne in the fantasy community, I was ecstatic that I got approved for an arc. I’m not a fast reader but books rarely take me over a week to finish. Especially arcs. The Shadow of the Gods took me 10 days even though it wasn’t particularly long. I wanted to love this book wholeheartedly. I was however just not interested enough.

I got the arc of this book but it was completely messed up and I couldn't read it. I had to wait until release date to get the ebook and read it, in a way it was better than I expected but still not great. Since there are many reviews of this book already, I will keep this one short. I enjoyed reading the Silent Patient last year, it was a real page-turner and I couldn't put the book down. Although the start was close in the Maidens, I found myself engrossed in the story and finished it in a single sitting once things were in motion. That was the most fun about this book, its addicting quality. The characters weren't memorable nor that interesting. I questioned many of their decisions and I didn't find them relatable. While Marianne isn't a bad main character, I couldn't fathom a logical reason for involvement in the case, where's the police?? She has no training in this department and being a group therapist on its own isn't enough reason for me. The way she dealt with her grief was at least well-handled (apart from those *inserts supposedly relevant psychology fact*) As for the mystery itself, the motives were BS. They weren't believable at all nor there were any hints about them. While I didn't guess the culprit and I can see why it's them, the whole mystery reveal was very farfetched and underwhelming. It might sound like a negative review but when I read this book, I needed something quick and fun to read and this book was exactly that. Don't expect an innovative story nor very developed characters or even a satisfying resolution. Yet, if you want an entertaining & fast mystery read (the short chapters definitely helped), you can give this book a try. Two years ago, Jenna went to a retreat in Malta organized by Tom Wade, the man behind SoulShrink. But she didn’t come home. She disappeared and the local authorities judged that she had committed suicide jumping from a cliff. Two other accidents took place on that retreat leaving Tom in prison for manslaughter. However, he will be released soon. Jenna’s mother is set on blaming Tom for her daughter’s death. She sends her daughter, Fran, to the retreat that Tom organized (or rather his wife, Kate). The book is told from 3 perspectives, Jenna in the past, Fran in the present, and Kate’s. The book was easy to read and I finished it rather quickly. I found the first half more interesting, we were learning more about Fran’s family, Tom, and what happened two years ago. However, I couldn’t understand how the mother would force her daughter to go to a retreat that she believes killed Jenna. Isn’t she worried about her daughter’s life? While sister’s dynamics usually interest me, having a sister myself, I simply couldn’t like it here. There was an astonishing lack of communication and Fran was very selfish not trying to connect with Jenna growing up. I also found the story difficult to believe especially with that plot twist at the end. The thrill of mystery for me is the possibility that these events might happen in real life. These simply, wouldn’t. Another thing I didn’t like is that the second half kind of got repetitive, especially with Kate. I didn’t find her perspective very useful to the story. But it’s not like I particularly liked any of the characters either. I was mostly indifferent about them. This is my first book by C.L. Taylor and while this book didn’t impress me, it won’t be my last book of hers. Thanks to NetGalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review. ...more |

19 years old Lo is alone. After her aunt died, she has no one left in this world except for the sister she hasn’t seen in years. Shortly after the accident that killed their parents, Bea left and joined the Unity Project. She hasn’t contacted Lo since. The Project claims that Bea doesn’t want to contact Lo no matter how much she tries. Working at a renowned magazine, Lo is set to uncover the secrets of the Project and reach her sister. But the Project has a very good image and, on the surface, doesn’t appear as a cult. But surely the man called Lev claiming he’s God’s messenger sent to save souls, can’t actually talk to Him and guarantee paradise to his followers, right? I’m not a fan of contemporary YA but in this book, the main character isn’t a minor nor is her sister. It also doesn’t focus on a romance just like Summer’s other books that I have read. You see, I loved Sadie. It was truly brilliant. All the Rage wasn’t bad at all either. Although books that revolve around cults and the like don’t particularly interest me, I wanted to give this book a try because of my previous positive with Summers. Only this book wasn’t good enough. The book is told following two timelines throughout this book. One is from Bea’s pov (third person) and the other from Lo’s (first person). I didn’t mind going back and forth between povs but I admit, some were abrupt. Before I explain my main issues, I want to say how solid Courtney Summers's writing style is. It’s very addictive. It’s easy to read and follow all while not being “simple”. I flew through it especially since I was reading a heavy fantasy book too. The Project was a breath of fresh air. But don’t get me wrong, it certainly didn’t deal with light topics. Yet, I can’t name anything else that I liked. It was just very meh and forgettable. I also didn’t dislike it save for two things that I couldn’t stand. 1) Lo’s character was interesting… until she started complaining about being a secretary at a well-known magazine. She wants a higher position, she wants to write, but she doesn’t have any previous experience (other than this job) nor a diploma. And I’m here, working a job I’m very overqualified for with a diploma and I’m pretty sure I earn less than her. To say this attitude annoyed me to no end is an understatement. She should be grateful. She should be working to build her skills, taking courses and certifications, trying to build her portfolio, instead of waiting for a promotion after a year at the company. 2) Something she shouldn’t have done, no matter how much Bea hurt her by not reaching out. Even though she didn’t do it for revenge nor hate, Lo did something inexcusable, sisters should never do. I can’t believe someone, with a character like Lo, would’ve done it. I felt like it was out of character in a way. (view spoiler)[You don't sleep with someone your sister has slept with, goes without saying.. (hide spoiler)] Other than that, I simply didn’t enjoy the book, particularly the second half. The first half was engaging. Lo’s devotion to finding her sister even though she cut all contact with her was fascinating but again, the incident that takes place in the second half ruined it for me in a way. I have a sister myself and that’s something sisters who care and love each other would never do. As for the Project, I was interested in how they attracted new members but I really wonder if it’s so widespread how can it manage to still be so secretive? Sure, we see how Lev attracts new members, who they attract, but if there was actually something bad happening, how did it never get out? By the end and even with that ending, I was completely indifferent about The Project. Luckily, it was a quick read, and thanks to the writing style, I didn’t struggle to finish it. I debated whether I should give this book 2 or 3 stars, I settled on 2. Even though I didn’t hate it, I certainly did hate a couple of things about it. On the other hand, the only thing I liked was the writing style. 3 stars books have more than that. Briefly, I didn’t feel much reading this book. The first half was interesting but then the book took a turn I disapprove of (ha ha I feel like an uptight reader now). But the characters were the highlight of this book and I couldn’t connect to them although I have a younger sister too. I only recommend this book if you’re looking for a book revolving around cults. Or if the description interested you. arc provided via NetGalley ...more |

I was excited to read this one. It's a Vikings inspired fantasy set in a world where gods rule and directly influence their followers. The book was well written and relies more on religion and gods and less on the usual fantasy tropes which was nice. I also found the world very vivid and easy to picture. Also, don't miss the glossary and the map at the end of the book! (The map was at the end too but it might be moved later) This book tells the story of Hessa, an Eangi priestess, banished from her community for not following the orders of the high priestess and subsequently, her goddess Eang. However, soon her people are killed and she’s left alone in the world with one mission: kill the traveler and earn the forgiveness of the goddess. Heartbroken but determined, Hessa starts her journey around her known world, to uncover the secrets behind the massacre and finding the traveler to secure her place in the afterlife.

These boo From Blood and Ash: ★★★★ A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire: ★★★ 2 1/2 stars The Crown of Gilded Bones was one of my most anticipated books this year. These books are like junk food for me. High quality? No. But very enjoyable. And sometimes that’s all we need. The first book was tons of fun. I had a few issues with the second book but I still enjoyed it anyway. However, this installment simply wasn’t as good as the first two. This book continues directly from the cliffhanger of AKOFAF and the first chapters (which were released as a sample) made me very excited to read this book. Well, suffice to say it started with a BAM. Then from 15% to 55% (approx.) almost nothing happens…

This book was fun, to say the least. It could be easily read in one sitting. Competition –at least for me- is always entertaining to read about and I don’t think I’ll ever get bored of this trope. However, fun isn’t enough.

I only requested this arc because Ann Brashares is the author of the famous The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. I never read the book, only watched the movie over 8 years ago back when I used to think every movie/tv show with teens was awesome. I remember that it was fun. Now I know I'm not reading it. Excuse me if my review is all over the place. I had so many issues with The Whole Thing Together that I don't even know where to start from. The summary alone was confusing and I don't think it's worth wasting my time to try to explain it, the family relationships are very complicated.. I won't even write a detailed review, it's tiring to even think about it. This book is a mess. In any novel, having multiple POVs is not an easy job for the author. It can be confusing, annoying, useless, and so much more. Especially, in contemporary. This book was not an exception. Everything that can go wrong while using multiple POVs was found here. I think I need to explain. You see, at first, I thought Ray and Sasha are the main characters. I was wrong, we read from their sisters pov too. 5 people! And I didn't care about any. I was confused who was telling the story each time especially with the 1st person usage and in the same chapter, we can find multiple POVs... The characters were so richly annoying. Let's start with the sisters. The author tried to make them 3-dimentional but terribly failed. Quinn was oh my so perfect, so We all know Ray and Sasha will end up together but God, the cringe. So these two fellows practically fell in love with each other because they shared a room and stuff (never at the same time) and before they ever met. Well, the author never said it, but it was pretty obvious. I didn't root for them. Maybe it's because the story didn't only focus on them but also about the sisters' lives. Maybe because of the cringe-worthy letters. But in any case, I was indifferent. I think introducing the sisters was kinda necessary since their story wasn't worth a book, anyway... The Asian rich father (of course, he works with techs. That's what all Asians do) and the irritating mother were so childish. (view spoiler)[I hated that the author used this cheap way to bring them together, killing the girl with no romance interest (hide spoiler)]. Sasha didn't appreciate her mother and she even knew it but it didn't help, I still hated her for it, her mother was nice. I even had a headache while reading this book. I never have headaches. If you still want to read this book, go for it. Sometimes "it's me not you" kind of book but this one is definitely the book's problem. ***ARC provided via NetGalley*** ...more |

One of my favorite tear-jerking anime is Angel Beats! It's about kids who go to a school after death. There, they have to accept their deaths to be reborn (you know, Hinduism). Anyway, they don't remember much about their previous life, at first. But eventually, they do. And this book was a rotten carbon copy of Angel Beats! Now, of course, there are some differences. I won't list all the similarities because they're countless but executed in a very bad way. Echo, the main character, wasn't exactly a good girl like Otonashi in Angel Beats who is a decent person and a boy. I prayed it won't end in a similar way but of course, it did. Angel Beats was also about healing and accepting but not here. At least not in that sense. Echo wakes up in a dark room in what is called the Middle house. She learns later that she is there because she was murdered. All the children of the house are there for the same reason. Everyone has a superpower. They want to revenge their deaths so they can reborn. You know Karma. They're ghosts who do abnormal stuff to a point of killing their murders to rest and move on. As you can see, this is Angel Beats! mixed with Miss Peregrine's house for Peculiar children and Ghostbusters. Wow mixing three different cultures. It was bad. Echo (I hate her name, stupid reason to give her this nickname) is so annoying and self-centered. The point of this book is that she doesn't stay the same person by the end and she learns from her mistakes. Well, she didn't but I didn't like her nonetheless. I actually wanted to use some quotations from this book to show you exactly why I didn't like the book. But since it's an arc and it might be edited, I might add them when the final copy is released but still, that doesn't explain the use of over 320 exclamation marks in a 250 pages book. Before her death, she used to love this person called Andy (he called her rabbit and she called him wolfie and oh my God the cringe). After her death, she starts falling for a guy named Cole. He's super hot *eye roll*. It was too much of insta-love for me. Because you see, she starts thinking a lot about him only a day or two after her death. And she's loved Andy, she doesn't want him to be with anyone else. She gets super jealous from this girl who has a crush on her boyfriend and after 2 minutes, she starts kissing Cole. Seriously? So yeah this love-triangle was total non-sense. I do not approve of what the kids are doing. I liked that in Angel Beats they tried to deal with their situation and accept it but here? It was a mess. The characters lacked a real personality. When she first arrived, you get the idea that there were so many people there but then she made friends and we know nothing about the rest. Also, Echo's power helped the plot too much. Where's the mystery here if she can just enter any person's thoughts?! (view spoiler)[This book is not for YA, in my opinion. I mean, the girl's language is so vulgar. The father of Andy lusts over her, another psycho too. And the murderer took pictures of naked..? (hide spoiler)] I didn't like this book, at least, I finished in less than 2.5 hours so it wasn't a real waste of time. I really wanted to give it a chance but no, sorry. arc provided via netgalley ...more |

| "It is important, when killing a nun, to ensure that you bring an army of sufficient size." I went to a Catholic school for 14 "It is important, when killing a nun, to ensure that you bring an army of sufficient size." I went to a Catholic school for 14 years, nuns were the ones responsible there. Naturally, we disliked them, they were mean, heartless, and too strict. However, after this book, all I can say is wow, I wish that was my kind of school! Because you see, these are no ordinary nuns. I mean who would train the students to poison, kill, and destroy? Of course, in self-defense ;) Meet Nona Grey, the female version of Kvothe [image] [image] After she tried to kill the son of the wealthiest family in the empire, Abbess Glass saves Nona from an inescapable death and recruits her to join the convent of Sweet Mercy. Even though they are taught about faith and the Ancestor, the nuns of Sweet Mercy are not ordinary. They train deadly assassins and helps those with special talents to flourish. There, Nona makes new friends and develop her abilities. However, her past won't stop hunting her and her powers can't be kept a secret anymore... One of my favorite things about this book is the friendship between the girls. Usually, in books, we see solid male friendships but so rarely females. Sometimes, it starts strong but they drift apart for some reason. Not in this book. I know it's natural since they live in a dorm and go to the same classes, but it was well done nonetheless. I liked how Nona developed a special bond with Hessa, how she held Ara precious and was ready to do anything to protect her. Nona's definition of friendship equaled trust. She'd never betray her friends and expected them to do the same in return. They'll be hell of a squad when they grow up. I also liked the nuns, especially sister Apple and sister Kettle. I loved how they treat the children, at least Nona, not as kids but as people who will understand and think for themselves. The story started strong, addicting, and fascinating. It's told in the 3rd person from Nona's pov. While our girl is more mature than most of our YA heroines nowadays, she's no reliable narrator. She told her friends lies and I believed her until she told another lie and I learned to never do. She's always keeping something to herself or alternating past events. She played with the truth and reformed it. Yet, you can't help but admire her. Nona is brave, vicious, smart, and deadly. I just love her. Even though the cliffhanger in Red Sister is no major one, I want to read the next book so bad. She was already amazing at 10 and 12, so what will she become at 18? The worldbuilding in this book is quite creative Why not 5 stars? (minor spoilers sorry) Everything was perfect until we reached the second half. As Nona learned about her world, we learned with her too. But eventually, it got boring. Even introducing Zole (hope they'll become friends) didn't help. From 50% to 80% of the book, I felt like I was barely making any progress. Luckily, the events picked up eventually, and I couldn't put the book down. This book isn't an exception from one of the most annoying cliches in books. Remember Harry when he never told Dumbledore what's happening even though it could've saved lots of trouble? I know things turned out okay and he learned his lesson but I'm not even sure things will be fine here! When kids know something, they should tell the grown ups. Sometimes they are bad but not here. Sister Abbess didn't show Nona but good intentions. I hated how they didn't tell the sisters what they discovered. It cost them dearly. Other than that, this book was simply amazing. It's easily the best book released in 2017 I read so far. I highly recommend it even if you didn't enjoy Prince of Thorns. I haven't read it (yet) but heard enough about it to know it's nothing like this book at all. Mark Lawrence did a splendid job, the writing style was gripping and the characters definitely memorable. It was my first book by this author but certainly not the last. Go read this book as soon as it comes out! You won't regret it! arc provided via NetGalley. All opinions are my own. ...more |

actual rating: 2.5 stars If you're not familiar with Aphra's story, you should read Litany of Earth novella (read it here). I enjoyed this short story actual rating: 2.5 stars If you're not familiar with Aphra's story, you should read Litany of Earth novella (read it here). I enjoyed this short story way more than Winer Tide. I really liked it but this book was so slow. I read it almost directly after starting this book. I expected Winter Tide to be as enjoyable but sadly, it wasn't. Even though this book didn't meet my expectations, it certainly made me curious enough to check out Lovecraft work in the future. I had no idea it held such influence before starting this book. The only knowledge about this topic was Cthulhu, and only by name. My friend even told me that the Drowned God (and the Greyjoys’ religion in general) in ASOIAF is inspired by H. P. Lovecraft work so naturally, I'll definitely read some of his books. I think, no, I know that a person with more experience in this field, would've liked this book more since he'd understand all the references. I didn't know what was Ruthanna Emrys' creations and what wasn't and we had lots of new words. So "it's me not you" kind of book. While I appreciated the descriptions of the world and traditions, it was a bit too much because it made the book slow-paced. The characters were likable enough. Their character development was obvious by the end of the book. But I still couldn't relate to any of them or even get attached to them. I'd recommend this book for the fans of Lovecraft world but if it's your first try, like me, you might want to learn more about his work to fully enjoy Winter Tide. arc provided via netgalley ...more |
