Washington helped unite a deeply divided country and move personally from a slave holder to one who freed his slaves. This growth didn’t happen without mistakes and blunders as the author shows the messiness of life, but overall Washington was a great leader and got a fledgling country off to a strong start.
The structure of the novel pays homage to Steinbeck’s Travels with Charley (I’ll have to read that one) and the first person narrative that alternates between Washington’s past and the author’s travels with his wife and new puppy make for a light and engaging story. The places they visit focus on local legends and history that are wildly fabricated or factual with tidbits sprinkled throughout to keep the readers interest. I liked the memoir/ historical blend that brings Washington to life....more
