I didn't really connected with either main characters, and I didn't really felt the attraction between them as a couple... it's not enough for me to read that there is a connection / chemistry between the main couple... I need to feel it too... and this story was missing this... the writing style was ok, but it did not make me curious about picking up her other books... and to be honest, I have too much other stuff going on in my life, not to mention a whole lot of amazing books just waiting on my tbr #BookMountain for me to waste my time finishing a book that I don't really care how it ends... I'm sure that some of you will love it, but it just wasn't my cup of tea #SorryNotSorry :) we can't all love the same books :) XOXO A Merged review: ARC received from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review :) unfortunately I had to DNF this book at 46%... don't get me wrong, there wasn't anything spectacularly wrong with it, but I just... *sighs* I was going back and forth with this book... how should I even rate it? because it wasn't that awful... it's just... I got the ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review :) it was my second book ever from this author that I had the pleasure of reading... and the pleasure was definitely all mine ;) I adore her writing style and I'm definitely looking forward to checking out her other work... ;) but maybe for today, let us concentrate on the topic of this particular review, which is the sequel in her new series :) but don't worry, even if you haven't read the first book, this one works perfectly well as a standalone :) you get all the informations and explanations necessary to understand the world and to follow the story, so if this one interests you more, you can start here... although I highly recommend you to start at the beginning, because that first story was amazing as well ;) ok, now that we have this little explanation out of the way, let me tell you a bit more about the world and our main character :) This is an alternate version of our world... it's set in the past, around the time of war with Napoleon... but it's not your average historical story... oh no... it has some very cool paranormal elements :) how cool? oh I'll tell ya ;) some people have Talents :) and even fewer people have Extraordinary Talents, which means they are even better and more unique :) each book in this series, and there are going to be eight in total, will revolve around a different woman with an Extraordinary Talent :) I don't want to say too much, but I will give you a few glimpses / examples :) you can be a Scorcher, like Elinor, the heroine from the first story, which means you can start, and extinguish if you're an Extraordinary Scorcher like her, fire :) you can be a Seer, like Sophia, which gives you an ability to Dream about the past and the future, or have Visions connected to certain objects :) or you can be a Bounder, which long story short, means you are a teleporter :) these are just a few examples, and trust me, I am simplifying the hell out of every Talent, because I am not qualified to explain it as lovely and thoroughly as the wonderful Melissa does in her books :) so trust me, you'll understand everything while you read the books :) now that you know a bit more about the world, how about I will tell you something about Sophia, our heroine :) and a few other important people in this story :) Sophia... it's really hard to describe her in just a few sentences, and we don't have a whole day for an in depth analysis ;) she's an Extraordinary Seer and, well... she can be very stubborn ;) she has an analytical mind and the whole book revolves around her wanting justice and revenge for someone who wronged her... I know it's a bit vague, and I know that there's a bit more about this whole situation in the synopsis, but I feel like that's all you need to know about that situation ;) she's a very complex character, and even though I didn't agree with some things she did or said, ultimately I couldn't help but like her... she's flawed and human in the best possible way... I don't know how and when exactly, but I grew to really adore her over the course of the book :) so again, I don't want to say too much about her, because I think it's better if you guys just go with an open mind into the story and make up your own mind about her :) Before I go into my overall thoughts and feelings about this book, I want to mention to you guys a few people that I adored :) and I will leave my fave person for last ;) we have Cecy and her husband Lewis, Cecy is Sophia'a best friend and I adored how much they care for each other... they forgive the mistakes and support each other in hardships and it was just so nice to see a friendship like that :) there is also a certain gentleman, I won't share his name, but trust me... you'll know him when you see him ;) that warmed my heart... although the romance part of this story was waaaayyy in the background, I adored every little scene between him and Sophia... :) and of course Daphne, my favourite person in this story ;) she's an Extraordinary Bounder and such a fun character ;) you have no idea how happy I am that she will be the heroine of the next story... I cannot wait to learn more about her and see what awaits her in the future :) I was thinking hard after finishing this book how exactly to rate it, but ultimately I decided on full 5 stars... even though I enjoyed the first book a bit more, I realized this one also deserves 5 stars :) I mean... the world building is absolutely amazing, I loved getting to know more details about different Talents... meeting new people, and absolutely falling in love with them ;) not to mention that Melissa's writing style is... just... *sighs* so beautiful :) people, descriptions and all dialogues... *sighs again because once is not enough* ;) her writing style pulls you in and let's you immerse into the book... and before you know it, you're reading the very last chapter ;) and don't even get me started on the story... don't even try to predict what will happen next, because there were quite a few surprising turns and twists that made me gasp so hard I almost hyperventilated ;) #NoJoke ;) I highly recommend you guys this book, and this whole series in general, because it's a fantastically written world with a unique and interesting premise and complex characters, that will pull you in immediately ;) XOXO A Merged review: I got the ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review :) it was my second book ever from this author that I had the pleasure of reading... and the pleasure was definitely all mine ;) I adore her writing style and I'm definitely looking forward to checking out her other work... ;) but maybe for today, let us concentrate on the topic of this particular review, which is the sequel in her new series :) but don't worry, even if you haven't read the first book, this one works perfectly well as a standalone :) you get all the informations and explanations necessary to understand the world and to follow the story, so if this one interests you more, you can start here... although I highly recommend you to start at the beginning, because that first story was amazing as well ;) ok, now that we have this little explanation out of the way, let me tell you a bit more about the world and our main character :) This is an alternate version of our world... it's set in the past, around the time of war with Napoleon... but it's not your average historical story... oh no... it has some very cool paranormal elements :) how cool? oh I'll tell ya ;) some people have Talents :) and even fewer people have Extraordinary Talents, which means they are even better and more unique :) each book in this series, and there are going to be eight in total, will revolve around a different woman with an Extraordinary Talent :) I don't want to say too much, but I will give you a few glimpses / examples :) you can be a Scorcher, like Elinor, the heroine from the first story, which means you can start, and extinguish if you're an Extraordinary Scorcher like her, fire :) you can be a Seer, like Sophia, which gives you an ability to Dream about the past and the future, or have Visions connected to certain objects :) or you can be a Bounder, which long story short, means you are a teleporter :) these are just a few examples, and trust me, I am simplifying the hell out of every Talent, because I am not qualified to explain it as lovely and thoroughly as the wonderful Melissa does in her books :) so trust me, you'll understand everything while you read the books :) now that you know a bit more about the world, how about I will tell you something about Sophia, our heroine :) and a few other important people in this story :) Sophia... it's really hard to describe her in just a few sentences, and we don't have a whole day for an in depth analysis ;) she's an Extraordinary Seer and, well... she can be very stubborn ;) she has an analytical mind and the whole book revolves around her wanting justice and revenge for someone who wronged her... I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this is the third and final installment in the Lynch brothers series and you really should read the first two books before going into this one… it’s all very connected and even though there is a very handy guide at the beginning of this story reminding you about the most important characters and events I think you would benefit more having that previous knowledge… since this is the final book in a series, I can’t really talk about what exactly it’s all about, so let me say this… it’s a novella about a small town with paranormal vibes happening all around… it involves a unique group of friends and as always a phenomenal writing style by Heather Novak… I really wish the stories in this series were longer than novellas, cause there’s just sooo much potential in it, and I am always left wanting more… but it was a very good ending to the series, so what better time to inhale it in one sitting when all of the stories are available? :) happy reading XOXO A Merged review: I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this is the third and final installment in the Lynch brothers series and you really should read the first two books before going into this one… it’s all very connected and even though there is a very handy guide at the beginning of this story reminding you about the most important characters and events I think you would benefit more having that previous knowledge… since this is the final book in a series, I can’t really talk about what exactly it’s all about, so let me say this… it’s a novella about a small town with paranormal vibes happening all around… it involves a unique group of friends and as always a phenomenal writing style by Heather Novak… I really wish the stories in this series were longer than novellas, cause there’s just sooo much potential in it, and I am always left wanting more… but it was a very good ending to the series, so what better time to inhale it in one sitting when all of the stories are available? :) happy reading XOXO A ...more |

I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, and I have to say that I really loved it :) I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed it, cause I did not expect to fall in love with these characters and their story as much as I did :) don't worry if you are new to this author or this series, because I was :) it's the first book written by her that I read, but definitely NOT the last ;) and my lack of knowledge about previous stories absolutely did not diminish my pleasure of reading this book :) so don't worry about it and just pick it up, because it was absolutely fantastic :) but let me tell you more about it :) So let me start with our main couple :) Hunter is a cop... a very sexy cop with sarcastic sense of humor so I was totally in love with him in the first few chapters... ;) what can I say? I'm a sucker for that ;) he joined the force at a very young age for very personal reasons connected to his past... I don't want to get into too many details, but let me just say that his father used to beat up his mother and him...and then we have Evangeline... she was married to an abusive husband for six years before finally escaping from him, six months prior to the beginning of this story :) and it was actually Hunter who found her that night and escorted her to the women's shelter... since I haven't read previous books, I have no idea if that situation was mentioned or described in them, but just a few sentences here is enough as an introduction to the story :) so as I said before, we start the book six months later and he still can't stop thinking about her... so imagine his surprise when she turns out to be his new neighbour ;) I absolutely loved the build up of a relationship between them :) it's kind of slow, but very sweet :) and even though the story is not very long, I definitely did not felt like their journey was rushed or anything :) but I do feel the need to mention that I am partially biased to these types of stories... :) don't get me wrong, it's not because something like that happened to me or anything, but books where the heroine is overcoming this type of situation always gets to me more somehow... maybe it's because it's usually a journey when they become strong again, when they are re-building their life... it's just... I have a soft spot for those stories :) but, on the other hand, it definitely makes it harder for me to really love those books, because I have certain expectations about them :) and I am pleased to say that this book was absolutely spectacular... :) I love how it showed that the journey for Evangeline is far from over, but she's getting there closer and closer every single day... I loved the slow build up between her and Hunter... that there is this... attraction and sparks, but she doesn't just jump right into bed with him... :) I enjoyed their relationship immensly... :) and this book has such a beautiful ending... just... :) and now I am definitely waiting for the next one ;) why, you ask? oh I'll tell you ;) I have just one word for you... Saylor :) she's this awesome, quirky neighbour and a new friend of Evangeline and I know that she will get her own book... well, I don't necessarily KNOW that, but I have a pretty big hopes for it... ;) and it would be just perfect if it'd be the next one, cause I need her happy ending :) she was such a fun character to read about and I want more of her :) I need to know more... :) so fingers crossed ;) there were of course more secondary characters, but the main couple took the most space in this story, as they should ;) and from all the rest, I loved Saylor so much, that all other sort of faded in the background... :) although I need to mention, that there are dogs in this book :) another bonus points for me cause I am a huge dog person ;) It was such a fast read for me :) I fell in love with the writing style from the very beginning, and the fact that we have two perspectives in this story is a huge bonus for me :) I love to be able to get inside the heads of both main characters, especially if its done as well as in this book :) and even though the book wasn't very long, it told an absolutely lovely story of love and getting back your strenght and just... :) I adored the character development that Evangeline went through :) from the beginning you could see the glimpses of the woman she used to be before... but the further we got into the book the more this sassy side of her came to light... :) so seeing her get her happy ending with Hunter was a true delight... and yes, I am perfectly aware that she's a fictional character, but reading would be sooo boring if we would not get invested into the stories and characters that we read about :) so I am totally recommending for you guys to pick it out :) you can start from this book, even if you are new to this author :) I did it this way and it was amazing :) but I will say that her writing style was so fantastic that I am definitely picking up some of her previous stories :) I want to see if she will enchant me once again :) I have a few quotes for you because I really wanted to show you the writing style and interactions that awaits you in this story :) but since they come from an ARC version, they might be slightly different in the finished one :) but it will show you what awesomeness is waiting for you if you pick it up ;) happy reading :) One of the first interactions between Hunter and Evangeline :) Evangeline first :) "'Look, I wasn't breaking the law.' 'You were trespassing on Paula Case's yard.' My jaw drops. 'You saw that?' 'Yes.' 'I'm pretty sure it's against the law to spy on people.' 'You were in plain sight.' He crosses his arms over his broad chest, muscles rippling. I can't help but stare. Tattoos on his biceps and at the top of his hips don't help things. 'My eyes are up here, gorgeous.' My mouth opens and closes a couple of times even as my gaze snaps to his face. 'I wasn't...' 'You were.' Yeah, I totally was." A little something when Evangeline met Saylor, by finding her cat with an R2-D2 shaped tag ;) Saylor first :) "'There you are.' Scooping up her cat, she scolds her gently before turning her attention to me. 'She used the force to escape and I've been looking for her for the past ten minutes.' 'Pretty sure she was leading the rebel army away from the stormtroopers. So, go easy on her.' The brunette regards me for a minute as if she's not sure if I'm making fun of her. 'Possibly she thinks I'm Vader since I tricked her into taking a bath this morning.' I nod solemnly. 'You're a dead ringer for him, for sure.'" A little bit of Hunter :) "After a shitastic day at work, I am eager as hell for a beer and a juicy steak on the grill, but before I can grab a bottle from the fridge, my phone rings and I groan. It's my partner, Dwight. Today he was promoted to detective, and, while I'm proud of him, I don't want a new partner. Shit, I'm half afraid they'll put me with Roberts and I'll end up killing the guy on the first day we're together. While that might do the world a favor, it won't help me when I'm up for promotion." And a little bit of Evangeline ;) "Adulting sucks when you're a single woman without a... crew, entourage? Squad? I can't keep up with the latest term for I don't even have enough friends to form a triangle. Gah. I'm lame." And the last one, part of a conversation between Saylor and Evangeline about Hunter ;) Evangeline first :) "'Then you do think he's attractive?' 'Uh, yeah. I'm not blind. Hunter is Thor hot.' She cants her head side to side. 'But without the blond hair, Nordic background, or hammer.' 'I wouldn't go that far.' She rolls her eyes. 'You're such a liar.'" XOXO A Merged review: I received an ARC of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, and I have to say that I really loved it :) I was actually surprised how much I enjoyed it, cause I did not expect to fall in love with these characters and their story as much as I did :) don't worry if you are new to this author or this series, because I was :) it's the first book written by her that I read, but definitely NOT the last ;) and my lack of knowledge about previous stories absolutely did not diminish my pleasure of reading this book :) so don't worry about it and just pick it up, because it was absolutely fantastic :) but let me tell you more about it :) So let me start with our main couple :) Hunter is a cop... a very sexy cop with sarcastic sense of humor so I was totally in love with him in the first few chapters... ;) what can I say? Scooping up her cat, she scolds her gently before turning her attention to me. 'You're such a liar.'" XOXO A ...more |

I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) I've been a fan of Carrie Aarons's writing style for a while now... she just has this unique ability to write about flawed characters that feel so real it's like I'm reading about people I actually know in real life... :) and each of her story is different... so I don't always love them equally, but that's actually a good sign :) we all have different personal preferences as readers and because she writes all types of novels, all of us are gonna be able to find a favourite among them :) and this particular one is definitely now high on my list of her books... but before I get into all the reasons why I loved it, let me tell you a bit more about the actual plot and our main couple :) So what can I say about Reese and Erin without actually spoiling too much of their story... :) they've been friends... best friends really, for almost twenty years... and they couldn't be more different... Reese is this very optimistic but also resilient person... he has to be, especially since he's working as a NICU nurse... Erin works as a journalist, but what she really wants to do is switch to only run her blog... she's... not exactly pesimistic but definitely not romantic... and Reese is just the opposite... :) they made a pact when they were teenagers that if they are both single when they will be thirty, then they will marry each other... and as you can guess, that date is coming closer and closer... and now that Reese moved back to their hometown... yeah... :) he brings it up and... well... I can't really say anything else, mostly because I expected a bit of a different story and I don't want to ruin your experience by spoiling certain details... so instead of that, let me tell you about all the reasons why I gave this book 4,5 stars :) The main reason why I love Carrie's books is her writing style... :) she creates these flawed characters that feel so real... I may not always like them... at least not in the beginning, but they are always complex, layered people that I'm interested to know more about... this exact thing happened with this book... Reese was such an easy character to fall in love with... charming and easy going :) Erin on the other hand... it took me a moment to warm up to her... she's a much more guarded person... and I needed time to get to know her and understand why she acts the way she does... but in the end it was all worth it :) when it comes to their relationship... to be honest, based on the synopsis, I expected a bit of a different book... I thought it would be this light and funny rom-com about a pact between best friends now falling in love... you now, an easy summer read... but what I got was so much more... I got a complex story with complicated people... a romantic hero and a heroine that don't believe in love... a relationship between them with so many layers and meanings... and a few turns I did not expect... with adult characters that yeah, have misunderstandings and arguments, but through them and after them they still act like adults... they take their time to cool down and then talk to each other and work things through... I love that in books... I don't need unnecessary drama and angst... :) I highly recommend you guys this absolutely beautiful story... it will grip your heart and won't let go until the very end... it's filled with complex characters, and I'm talking not only about the main couple, the secondary ones are very interesting as well... Morgan, Erin's sister is my personal favourite :) by the way, shout-out to a great sisterly relationship :) they are so rare in books :) and I always love to read about them, because me and my sister J are also very close ;) this is a book that will hit you in all the feels, and those are the best ones... when you can laugh, and sigh and tear up a little... when you shout at the characters and want to smack them on occasions, but in the end it's such a worthy journey... :) so definitely pick this gem up :) XOXO A Merged review: I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) I've been a fan of Carrie Aarons's writing style for a while now... she just has this unique ability to write about flawed characters that feel so real it's like I'm reading about people I actually know in real life... I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this is a standalone story but... if you are familiar with Carrie's books, you may see a familiar face or two... but don't worry, you can read this novel without any previous knowledge whatsoever :) but if you want to know more, you can meet Eloise in "Priviliged", another book by Carrie Aarons :) she's a secondary character in that one and the main couple from that book makes a brief appearance here :) now that we have this little explanation out of the way, let's jump into some more details about our main couple and the plot of this story :) Eloise is british, but after studying for two years in college in Paris, she decides to take a semester abroad, in one of the american universities... that's where she meets Colton, a basketball star and the big man on campus... they have this hot attraction between them from the start, even if they don't make a move about it straight away... there is a bit of dancing around each other before they finally ignite ;) I'm not really sure how to express my feelings about both of them... it wasn't that I hated them, but I didn't love them either... yes, there were times when their behaviour annoyed me, but also moments when they were so sweet and lovely... *sighs* I have very mixed feelings about all of that, and let me tell you why... :) This review may be summed up with my rating: 4 it's-not-you-it's-me stars ;) as in... these type of stories are not really my cup of tea... and that's ok, cause we all have our own personal preferences :) and even though I haven't fallen in love with it, it doesn't mean I can't appreciate a good book when I see one :) because this story will be perfect for a lot of you :) if you're a fan of "Gossip girl" and adore stories with drama, scandals, angst, intrigue and so on... you will inhale this one in record time :) I'm just not the biggest fan of them :) so there might have been an eye roll or two while I was reading the book :) again, please, don't get me wrong... I have nothing against it, and I am more than happy for all of you who will adore it :) but for me it was just too... a lot of things... :) too much too fast happening between our main couple... I would love to see their relationship progress more slowly... some things were resolved a little bit too quickly... others were glossed over... but on the other hand, there were some resolutions that surprised me, in a very positive way :) not to mention that I am always a fan of an epilogue at the end of the story that allows us a little glimpse into the future of the characters ;) and as always, Carrie's writing style was entertaining and a pleasure to read :) so if you are looking for a scandalous and delicious read full of intrigues, definitely pick this one up ;) you'll love it ;) XOXO A Merged review: I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this is a standalone story but... if you are familiar with Carrie's books, you may see a familiar face or two... but don't worry, you can read this novel without any previous knowledge whatsoever :) but if you want to know more, you can meet Eloise in "Priviliged", another book by Carrie Aarons :) she's a secondary character in that one and the main couple from that book makes a brief appearance here :) now that we have this little explanation out of the way, let's jump into some more details about our main couple and the plot of this story :) Eloise is british, but after studying for two years in college in Paris, she decides to take a semester abroad, in one of the american universities... that's where she meets Colton, a basketball star and the big man on campus... they have this hot attraction between them from the start, even if they don't make a move about it straight away... there is a bit of dancing around each other before they finally ignite ;) I'm not really sure how to express my feelings about both of them... it wasn't that I hated them, but I didn't love them either... yes, there were times when their behaviour annoyed me, but also moments when they were so sweet and lovely... I got an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review :) I was a bit apprehensive before reading this one... don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but the thing is... I wasn't the biggest fan of her previous story, but I AM a huge fan of her writing style, so I had some mixed feelings going into this book... but man oh man... I loved it soooo much :) this one definitely clicked for me :) it's a standalone contemporary romance set in New York, as you can probably guessed from the title ;) but it will definitely be hard to achieve that fragile balance of telling you just enough to make you curious and convince you to read this book, without giving away too much and avoiding all spoilers ;) because trust me, it's one of those storis when the less you know going into it, the better for your reading experiance... :) but I will do my best :) So let me start with our main couple... oh how I adored them :) Gemma is a beauty editor in one of those chic fashion magazines :) she's in her twenties, looking for love... ;) and not finding it... ;) but she doesn't lose hope ;) she may sound like a romantic to you, but trust me... she has the most amazing sassy / sarcastic side that I adored soooo much :) she's actually full of contradictions, and I can really relate to her... I mean, who says that we have to be just one type of person... :) the more I read about her, the more I loved her... flaws and mistakes and all... :) Oliver on the other hand... he's the owner of a very successful tech company and a self made millionaire... he can be awkward but he's also confident and very honest... sometimes brutally so, but I take that over keeping secrets and being deceitful every day... ;) theirs is definitely NOT your usual romance... again, I don't want to tell you guys too much about it, because I truly believe that too many details would ruin your experience, so let's just say that they start as friends with benefits sort of thing... while she still tries to find love :) because he's not interested in a relationship at all... being too busy with work... but at least he's honest about it :) so they have an understanding... where does it go from there and how exactly things change... I won't tell you, but I absolutely loved it :) This story was written in 2 POVs, which means we got chapters from Gemma's perspective, as well as Oliver's... and you may know by now that it's my favourite type of writing style... ;) but the biggest compliment I can give about this book is how honest it felt... the characters, the story... it was flawed... not in an annoying, but in a real way, that made you feel that much closer to the people you were reading about... *sighs happily* :) it was hilarious and sweet, but also vulnerable, awkward and sometimes brutally honest... and I can't remember the last time I connected so much with the characters I read about... Gemma in particular... and the more I think about it, the more I'm falling in love with her and her story all over again... to be honest... I think I may have my new favourite Carrie Aarons's book... so I definitely highly recommend you guys one-click this amazing story :) yes, it may be hard to read at times, because people don't always want to read such honest words... not all of us like to see ourselves on the pages of a book, but for me... the fact that I could connect sooo much to Gemma and her journey, made the experience of reading this book that much better :) XOXO A Merged review: I got an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review :) I was a bit apprehensive before reading this one... don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but the thing is... I got the ARC of this book from the lovely author herself in exchange for an honest review :) and to be honest, I have some mixed feelings about it... let me try to explain :) I gave this book 3,75 stars, although I had some real trouble when it came to give it a rating... don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Carrie's writing style, and it was still really good in this book as it was in her previous ones... my general problems were about this particular story... or to be more exact, the heroine... but before I get into all my feelings and thoughts about the book, let me tell you a bit more about it in general :) This is a standalone story of Camille and Nate... she is an only heiress of a very wealthy family, after her parents are murdered... dun dun duuuunnnn... sorry for that music interruption, but the moment needed a dramatic music theme... ;) back to the topic :) now her life is in danger as well, so she decides to hide in one of the mansions her family owns, that not a lot of people know about... it's right next to a very lovely and small town... :) Nathan grew up and lived there his whole life... he is now a groundskeeper at that very mansion, taking place of his father after he passed away... theirs is a very slow-building romance... and I liked that about them very much... anything else would seem... inappropriate... especially since she arrives at that mansion about a week after the tragedy... so romance is definitely not on her mind... especially since the person who hurt her family is after her as well... ok, so that's as much as I can tell you about the premise of the book without some major spoilers, so now let me get into all my feelings about it :) This review will be definitely shorter than my other ones, but I realized that every time I had some problems with the story and / or characters I tend to write short posts... mainly because I don't like to go on and on about things I disliked about a book... there is no need to prolong things I can express in a few sentences as well... and I prefer to focus on all the good stuff :) so let me start with my problems, so we can finish on a more positive note ;) so my main problem was with Camille... I had troubles connecting to her as a heroine in general... but it wasn't until the second half of the book... especially the ending, when she really frustrated me... because I can't go into details, let's just say, that some of her decisions were simply stupid and naive... I was really angry with how she acted in certain moments... and let's just leave it at that... *sighs* now to some good things :) on the other hand, I absolutely loved Nate :) he was genuinly this nice and good guy... and they do not appear as often in books as you might think... ;) I loved how protective he was of Camille, and how he gave her the time to get better... he was just a very good hero of a story :) I also enjoyed the secondary characters in this book, as well as just the whole theme of this little town... the atmosphere was just... so different and lovely there... every time I read a book set in one of them, I tend to get an urge to move there ;) all in all I enjoyed the majority of this story :) yes, Camille was driving me crazy from time to time, but Carrie's writing style was great as always... :) and just because I didn't like her, it doesn't mean you will fell the same :) so I definitely encourage you to read some other opinions besides mine and then make your own decision about whether you want to try this book out ;) XOXO A Merged review: I got the ARC of this book from the lovely author herself in exchange for an honest review :) and to be honest, I have some mixed feelings about it... let me try to explain :) I gave this book 3,75 stars, although I had some real trouble when it came to give it a rating... don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Carrie's writing style, and it was still really good in this book as it was in her previous ones... my general problems were about this particular story... or to be more exact, the heroine... but before I get into all my feelings and thoughts about the book, let me tell you a bit more about it in general :) This is a standalone story of Camille and Nate... she is an only heiress of a very wealthy family, after her parents are murdered... dun dun duuuunnnn... sorry for that music interruption, but the moment needed a dramatic music theme... ;) back to the topic :) now her life is in danger as well, so she decides to hide in one of the mansions her family owns, that not a lot of people know about... it's right next to a very lovely and small town... I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this is the fourth and final book in this epic fantasy series :) because of that, I can't possibly write my review completely spoiler free for all of you, so here's what we're gonna do: the next paragraph will be safe to read by everyone, even if you are new to this series and know nothing about it :) in it, I will tell you a bit more about our main group of characters and what the whole series is all about, without spoiling you certain surprising turns of events :) then the third and last paragraph will be my review of this last installment, where I will be mentioning people and events that may be counted as spoilers from the first three novels... I won't be explaining who the characters are and how they got involved into everything, because I am assuming that the people who read that last paragraph are people who are caught up on the previous books :) ok, now that we have this little explanation out of the way, let me tell you a bit about Helena :) She's the main character of the whole series, although besides her, we have quite a group of people around her, but I will get to them in a moment :) there was a prophecy that claimed Helena will be the strongest ruler of her people, the Vessel with magic so potent, she will have the potential to save or destroy everyone... to ensure that her magic won't be tainted with the corruption of the court, she is sent away and raised in secrecy... we meet her at the beginning of the first book, when her childhood friend Darrin comes back from his training to explain the situation to her, and takes her back to court, cause it's time for her to form her Circle and take her rightful place on the throne :) Helena is a great main character, strong but flawed, making mistakes and dealing with the consequences of her actions, I loved to see her grow and change as a person throughout the whole series :) her Circle, people who will be closest to her, will be made from five men, each of them put there for a specific reason: the Advisor, the Master, the Shield, the Sword and the Mate :) I won't go into any additional details who does what, because it's described very well in the books ;) through all four novels in the series, we have one big story arch, so you definitely have to read them in order :) this whole series is filled with betrayal, adventures, surprising twists and turns, cliffhangers, love, friendship, tears and laughter... it's a complete and beautiful mix that will leave your heart full of feelings... Meg Anne created a very rich and diverse world, and even though that big story arch is concluded in this final installment, there are more than a few teasers along the way that will lead us to a spin-off series that the author herself mentioned she will be working on in the future :) and I am more than happy to hear about that, because there is so much potential, not only with certain characters that I really want to know more about, but with the world itself... I feel like we only just scratched the surface of the places we could see :) so I am very excited to come back to this world at some point in the future :) if you didn't get it by now, let me tell it straight: I highly recomend you guys to check out this series :) the writing style is great and very entertaining... it takes a special talent to make me cry during my re-read of a story, when I already know what's gonna happen... and yet I am still affected so much by Meg's words that I can't help myself... if you haven't checked her out yet, definitely remedy that situation ASAP :) ok, now that I told you more about Helena and the whole series let's jump into my review of this final installment :) LAST WARNING people :) SPOILERS from the first three books are coming.... BIG SPOILERS are coming next, avert your eyes if you don't want to have big surprises ruined... ok, let's talk about the finale of this epic fantasy series... I recently re-read the first three books in preparation, because I realized I forgot a lot of details... and it was a great idea, because then I was able to really catch a lot of little things along the way... although I swear, I did not expect to cry again when Darrin was killed... I mean, I knew it was coming, and yet that scene in the third book once again wrecked me... since the fourth one picks up right after the ending of the third one, that death still lingers heavily on our characters... Helena and her closest allies are preparing for the final battle with Rowena and her army of Shadows... we have a brief break from all the drama with a celebration of the mating bond between Serena and Niall, and that whole part was just so sweet to read about :) to see all these characters experience such a joyful moment... *sighs happily* ;) mostly because soon after that, we are going straight back into the middle of things... Helena and her Circle, the official and unofficial one, are trying to find a way to defeat Rowena... and everything is leading to this epic battle that will finally determine the outcome of everyone... even though I tried to anticipate what might happen and how everything will end, I shouldn't have wasted my time... ;) Meg definitely managed to surprise me more than once during this story :) I loved the conclusion to the big story arch and the teasers we got about the future books set in this world... I adored that we kept seeing quite a few secondary characters I already fell in love with, and I hope that we will get to know even more about them... *coughs* Ronan and Reyna *coughs* ;) I think it was a great conclusion to the story and charcters I got so close to, and I'm looking forward to read not only more books set in this world, but also all others this lovely author will write :) I really enjoyed her writing style and can't wait to see what she has in store for us next :) XOXO A Merged review: I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this is the fourth and final book in this epic fantasy series :) because of that, I can't possibly write my review completely spoiler free for all of you, so here's what we're gonna do: the next paragraph will be safe to read by everyone, even if you are new to this series and know nothing about it :) in it, I will tell you a bit more about our main group of characters and what the whole series is all about, without spoiling you certain surprising turns of events :) then the third and last paragraph will be my review of this last installment, where I will be mentioning people and events that may be counted as spoilers from the first three novels... I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this is technically the fourth book in the Green Valley library series, which is part of a much bigger Pennyverse, that I will explain in a moment, but it works perfectly well as a standalone, so even if you are brand new to this author or world, you can easily pick it up and enjoy :) you get all the necessary informations about the main couple in this story, and even though there are definitely interesting appearances from other people who already got their own books, it just makes you curious to pick up their novels ;) when I said this is part of the bigger Pennyverse, what I meant is that Penny Reid originally created the town of Green Valley in Tennessee when she wrote her Winston brothers series, but now with cooperation from other authors, they can write stories set in that world and / or with some characters that we might know… it’s of course much more complex when it comes to the legal matters of everything, but you get the point :) I’m definitely happy this is a thing, because thanks to that I can be entertained with stories like this one :) Finley changes her whole life after she catches her husband cheating on her… yeah, not the best day of her life… she decides to quit her job as a journalist in Atlanta and move in with her grandmother and her two friends in the small town of Green Valley :) this is where she starts a new job in the town’s public library… it’s also where she meets Zeke, who is also new in town and working as an IT specialist in said library… and while there is a little spark between them, the actual romance part is my favourite type… as in slow burn over some amount of time :) and I really liked that… I liked that they got to know each other more and formed a bit of a friendship before falling more for one another… I adored the writing style, and the best compliment I can give for that, is that I did not plan to read it as fast as I did… I just sort of started it with intention of reading like a few chapters and then I was in the middle of the book… then I blinked and was finishing it :) the story itself was very entertaining and hilarious, although it had a few things that prevented me from giving it full 5 stars… so I landed on 4,5 instead :) they weren’t big things, for example, Finley isn’t really my favourite type of heroine, so some of her choices and decisions just weren’t to my liking… sometimes she was just a bit too over the top for me… another thing that bugged me, and I wasn’t always looking out or those, but I am trying to be a better and more conscious reader, is when in I think two places there was a sentence like “I am so OCD about this” when they don’t have that disorder and what they mean is that they are perfectionists or something similar… it was a small thing but it grated on my nerves, cause it could have been written in soooo many different ways… when it comes to thing I absolutely loved, the biggest one is Zeke :) he was just such a nice and kind person and I adored that about him :) we don’t know a lot about him in the beginning, so I don’t want to spoil any details but he was just absolutely lovely :) the story itself was very entertaining and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to you all ;) XOXO A ...more |

I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) wow... I mean... just... wow :) my mind is blown away by the awesomeness of this story :) I have troubles putting all my feelings into actual words and coherent sentences, but I will do my best :) it will not be easy, especially since this is a conclusion to a spin off series so I really want to write it all without any spoilers... so if I will be vague, you're just gonna have to forgive me :) cause I want this review to be able to be read by everyone, so I can convince them to give this author a try :) so first, let me give you some basic informations about this world and the order of the books :) This series, as well as the original one, is set in the world of Chosen :) it's a fantasy world, with magic and some mythical creatures, but I don't want to get into too many details, cause all of them are wonderfully explained in the books... plus, we don't know all of the things straight from the beginning, so I want to leave those surprises for you to discover along the way :) ok, so the original series is called The chosen and consists of four books (Mother of shadows, Reign of ash, Crown of embers, Queen of light) and it tells a story about Helena... she discovers her powers at the beginning of the first book and her destiny to rule the kingdom... she creates her Circle of most trusted advisors and warriors and throughout the four books she learns more things about herself and what she's capable of, all during a war with a mysterious and powerful person who wants to reign death and destruction on her kingdom... it's amazing :) fair warning, most of those books end on a cliffhanger, so you are definitely in a better position while reading them now when they are all available, cause I had to wait for each story and it was agony... ok, moving on ;) that first series ends in a satisfying way when it comes to the main story, but it also sets up perfectly this spin off / companion series, called The keeper's with three books :) this one revolves around yet another fantastic heroine, Effie... we met her in the original series, cause she was a secondary character there... she went through quite a lot of things then and I really liked her... so imagine my surprise when I read this trilogy all about her and I fell in love even more... she's in a new place, still a part of the Chosen world, but separate from her friends... she has to deal with new circumstances... and I'm sorry, but that's all I can share because any additional details would be too spoilerific if you haven't read the books :) so instead, let me get into all my thoughts and feelings about this last installment :) When I finished the second book in this series I wanted to hurl my Kindle out of the window... #TrueStory ;) I mean, knowing Meg Anne I knew I should have expected a cliffhanger... and I knew it would probably be a painful one... but man oh man... she almost killed me with that one :) so as soon as this little gem landed on my Kindle I knew I had to dive into it immediately ;) and it was soooooo worth the wait :) Meg not only gave me a fantastic resolution for the giant problem she left me with at the end of the second book, but also... just... *sighs happily* look, this was already a vast and diverse world full of potential... but now? I mean... :) we opened up even more very interesting possibilities... so I am here eagerly awaiting for the next series... cause trust me, there will be more, it's just a matter of time :) and as soon as it's possible I am gonna pre-order them :) I thought I could predict at least some of the things that might happen in this last installment about Effie, but Meg Anne just laughed at my plans and threw so many surprising twists and turns my way... ;) and I loved them all :) I swear, I fell in love with her writing style way back in the first The chosen book, and she just keeps getting better and better with each additional story... :) now that this phenomenal conclusion to Effie's story is available, you really have no excuses not to read them one right after another... trust me, that's the best solution to all the cliffhangers she's writing ;) just... go and read all of them cause they are absolutely fantastic:) full of strong and complex characters, romance and friendships, action and adveture with a big dose of magic... not to mention all the surprises along the way... it's entertainment in the best possible way, and if you haven't read her work yet you are missing out :) go remedy that situation right away ;) XOXO A ...more |

first reread (may 2020) I decided to reread this book before diving into the new one about Wyatt's brother... and it was just as sweet and adorable as first reread (may 2020) I decided to reread this book before diving into the new one about Wyatt's brother... and it was just as sweet and adorable as I remembered it from my first time reading... maybe even a bit better, cause this time I listened to the audiobook version *sighs and swoons* not gonna lie, Chris Brinkley murmuring the word "darlin" straight into my ear made me swoon every fucking time :) for more coherent thoughts keep on reading to find my original review, but I still wholeheartedly recommend this book :) original review (october 2019) I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) I can't you guys... this book was just so stinking cute that I can't even... :) I am sitting here with the biggest grin on my face and I'm wondering how am I supposed to find words that will explain in the best way all the warm and fuzzy feelings this story gave me :) so let's start with some basic informations :) this is the second book in Green Valley library series but totally works as a standalone :) it's also part of a bigger Pennyverse / Smartypants Romance thing :) as in books written by different authors that revolve around some secondary characters we already knew or brand new ones, but they are taking place in the world we already know from Penny Reid's books and include some cameo appearances of some very familiar couples ;) but even if you are not at all familiar with Penny's work, I highly recommend you to read this gem :) now let me get into all the messy reasons why I loved it in a totally random order :) #1 writing style :) I absolutely have to start with this one... I mean... I honestly cannot remember the last time I laugh out loud so hard as I did during this one ;) I had the best time reading this story :) it was hilariously funny, heartwarming and just... *sighs happily* I read it basically in one sitting cause I didn't want to put it down and I can promise you it will be a book that I will definitely reread on a regular basis :) #2 Sabrina :) our heroine is... just... I adored her :) she's shy... and I mean very shy, with some serious anxiety issues... also, a huge yay for mentioning many times throughout this book how therapy helped her deal with those issues ;) and while she's very shy, she's not a pushover... especially when standing up for her family... and her inner monologues... they were one of my favourite parts of the book... I mean, how could I not fall in love with a woman who curses using Harry Potter... "Holy Hufflepuffs" is just one of the examples ;) she had to deal with some tragedies in her life and that pushed her even more into her little bubble, shying away from basically everyone in her little town of Green Valley... she's content working as a library assistant and taking care of her sister's kids after her death some years back... with her evenings spent with books... I have to say, I relate, especially to that last part... ;) things start to slowly change when she meets Wyatt... but it also happens that her friend comes back to the town at the same time and other stuff happens that help her get a bit out of her comfort zone... but what I love most about her is that she doesn't have like a dramatic change of personality in this story... don't get me wrong, I love to pieces kickass women who are confident and take on every day and all that, but... when this type of heroine is written as good as Sabrina is in this story, well... they have a special place in my heart... :) she's still shy at the end of the book... she doesn't like crowded places and have troubles with eye contact :) but she's more brave when taking new chances and risks in her life :) #3 Wyatt :) *sighs happily* I feel like when it comes to him I have the same reaction like Sabrina did when she first met him... complete lack of words ;) but I will try my best to shake it off and describe him :) he's... kind, compasionate and patient... yes, he's also very handsome but honestly for me it's low on the list of reasons why he's awesome ;) I love how he is with his daughters, cuase he's a single father... I adore how he treats Sabrina... how he gives her time and not push her... he's not an alpha arrogant type, that's for sure... he's a gentleman... with a little bit of a dirty streak ;) *sighs and swoons* I'm sorry, that's all the words my muddled brain is capable of forming about him at the moment ;) see? this is what he reduced me to ;) and I am here for it :) #4 secondary characters :) besides the absoluely lovable main couple, we absolutely cannot forget about the secondary characters in this story... from Wyatt's daughters, to the freaking awesome trio of Sabrina's nephews and niece... from the parents to the siblings of our main duo... and let's not forget about all the appearances and mentioning of all the Winston family... *sighs happily* I can see sooooo much potential for future stories and am certainly hoping to see some more couples happening in future books :) there were cute moments... emotional ones... moments full of support and love that made me tear up... and of course absolutely hilarious ones that made me basically fall from my chair from laughter ;) I would give you some quotes but I would have to highlight like 80% of the book so you're just gonna have to read this gem and pick out your own favourites ;) oh, and I almost forgot to mention, that Harry, Sabrina's younger nephew is on the autism spectrum, so additional points for representation done in a really good way :) #5 small town setting :) there's just something about a story set in a small town that I adore... where people know each other... even if that means that everyone is interested in everyone's business ;) but more often than not it results in a sense of community that supports one another when it's needed :) plus, who doesn't love a little bit of meddling when it comes from a good place of love and concern ;) #6 just all around awesomeness :) I cannot find words good enough to express how much I loved this absolutely precious little gem :) you have to add it to your trb piles... as in like a top priority :) this story was hilariously funny, absolutely heartwarming, written in a way that will keep you glued to the pages... reading chapter after chapter of absolutely wholesome book that will steal your heart ;) please, please go and check it out, you won't regret it :) I cannot recommend it enough for you guys... it's easily one of my favourite reads of this year, and one of my all time faves as well ;) I think I'm gonna have to reread it soon to really absorb all the awesomeness of it ;) you know, just to make sure all of the points I mentioned above are correct ;) XOXO A ...more |

I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) based on some other reviews I’ve been seeing so far, I’m in minority when I say I wasn’t the biggest fan of this story… but that’s ok, because we are all entitled to our own personal opinions and I’m happy so many of you loved it :) but in case there may be others who might feel similarly to me, let me share my thoughts and feelings in a bit of a random order, cause I want to write this review while the story is still fresh in my mind ;) #1 this definitely works as a standalone story, and you don’t need any previous knowledge to enjoy it, you get all the necessary informations when it comes to background and even though there are some small appearances of familiar faces, it’s more of a nod to the fans of the original series ;) #2 Jay, our hero, is a half american and half japanese ranger who prefers to keep to himself, stays away from most people and just enjoys the silence… I definitely liked him more than our heroine, mostly because he reminded me of myself a lot of times ;) #3 Olive, our heroine, is not my cup of tea… because of personal preferences, I saw her as a bit childish and immature, acting irrationally and running away from her real life and responsibilities, pretending they don’t exist as long as possible… she was loud and a bit all over the place and that got really tiring really fast for me... #4 the romance between our main couple was at the same time too slow and too fast for my liking… they spend only a few days together and not enough happens between them in that time to justify the enormity of the feelings on both sides… I mean, I could understand that Olive thinks she loves him so fast, cause it clicks with her personality of diving head first into things without thinking too much about them... but it definitely didn’t strike me as something Jay would do… not to mention that after those few days something happens and we have a time jump… more about that a bit below in my spoilery section ;) #5 there were some pretty serious themes and subjects touched upon in this story and I really wished we would concentrate a bit more on them, cause I think it could really help me not only connect more with both Jay and Olive as characters, but they are important to talk about: Olive’s struggles with weight since she was a kid, her being part of the family she belongs to (it’s revealed later in the book, so I won’t spoil anything right now) and Jay’s struggles with his identity and the fact he feels like he doesn’t belong anywhere… #6 I was interested in this book in huge part because of the author… and the writing style was as good as I expected, it’s just that this particular story wasn’t for me… but there were a lot of funny moments and a few swoonworthy ones as well :) I am definitely gonna give another one of her books a try in the future… I already own some of them :) ok, now we are heading into spoiler territory, including things that happen and / or are revealed towards the end of the book so you are reading the rest of my review at your own risk ;) (view spoiler)[ #7 what really bugged me is that after spending a few days with Jay, Olive gets the information that her grandfather’s health is getting worse and she has to go back to him as soon as possible… and of course I understand that she immediately abandons everything and goes to him, that part is understandable… what irritated me is that then we have about a six months time jump, during which we learn that her grandfather passed away… and the only way she sort of keeps in touch with Jay is with postcards… yep, postcards… without any sort of way for him to respond to her… and with her being the granddaughter of one of the former presidents of the whole country, it’s not like he can easily find any sort of way to contact her… especially since she deletes her social media accounts… this one really irritated me… she appears out of nowhere about six months later and he welcomes her with open arms and bam, the story ends in a happily ever after :/ they never really talk about some big issues and everything is wrapped up really neatly and nicely within the few last chapters… which seems soooo unbelievable to me… I mean, they spent only a few days together and not only that doesn’t really showed me how they could have both fall in love so fast, then we have these long months basically without any contact whatsoever and then what… they pick up right where they left off and everything is good and well… *sighs* I just couldn’t get behind that... (hide spoiler)] all in all I decided to give this book 3 stars… it was closer to 2,5 or maybe 2,75 stars but I decided to round it up because I feel like a lot of issues I have with a story is because of my personal preferences and a lot of you might enjoy this story… as always, I encourage you to give some other reviews a read before you make up your own decision about picking up this book :) who knows, it might be your next favourite story :) I really wish that for you :) but it just wasn’t for me XOXO A ...more |

I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) ok, first things first... I struggled for a while with how exactly I want to rate this book, and in the end I decided on 4,5 stars... it's not that there's something wrong with this book that made me lower my rating... I can't quite put my finger on why I can't just give in and mark those 5 full stars, so it's probably a "me" thing... to be honest, I have been struggling lately with reading in general, so yeah... there's that... now that we have this weird explanation out of the way, let's just dive into the actual review so I can tell you about all the amazing qualities that this story has and why I loved it :) Ok, so technically this can be read as a complete standalone but since it's a sort of spin-off / companion story to Penny Reid's Knitting in the city series, we have appearances of a lot of couples from those books... plus, we met both main heroes from this one at one point or another in that original series... but again, you get all the necessary informations here, so you can enjoy this story without reading anything else before it ;) but from the perspective of someone who already read that original series, it was absolutely delightful to see certain characters in a scene here and there... also, if you're curious this story takes place a bit before and during "Marriage of incovenience" which is the seventh and last book in Knitting in the city series :) ok, now I feel like we can dive into my actual review :) I have to admit, I heard about the story between Steven and Ken for a while now... I believe it started as a bit of a fanfic on Wattpad but then it developed into this gem within what I like to call a Pennyverse, where different authors wrote stories set in places Penny created or about some of the secondary characters from her novels... don't worry, it's all being done with her knowledge and approval so no violation of copyrights or stuff like that is happening... ok, back to the story :) I remember that I loved Steven as a secondary character when I met him before, but it was Ken who actually surprised me... I mean, Steven is this openly gay man, who seems comfortable in his own skin and always knows what to say to difuse a situation... he was charming and funny and easily likeable... Ken on the other hand... well, if you've read some of the original books, he doesn't make a great first impression... but once I was able to get inside his head and see things from his perspective... *sighs* I really connected with him... I could relate to a lot of his struggles and thoughts and it really moved me... he keeps people at a certain distance but not for the reasons most of them think... he can be so funny and open with people he feels safe with and just... that's one of many reasons why I felt very close to him and wanted to see his happy ending... another great reason why this book was amazing is how many themes it touched upon... besides the romance part, we see how Ken and people close to him handle the fact that he identifies as bisexual... how sexual assault affects men, which I think is such an important thing to write about... and that's just a few :) another phenomenal thing is how complex our both main characters are... there's no easy way to describe them because the more we read the more we get to know about them... let's just say that I adored how wonderfully flawed they were... both of them made decisions and did things that annoyed me at the moment, and yet at the same time I could understad why they did it... and of course there were times when I was charmed by them and couldn't stop smiling :) all in all I can highly recommend you guys to check out this story ;) it's a lovely mix of funny and emotional that will keep you glued to the pages because you will just have to know how it will end ;) don't start reading it too late in the day, or you will lose sleep... just saying, you've been warned ;) XOXO A ...more |

I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) if we're being completely honest, I have no clue how to start my review of this novel... so maybe let's begin with some basic informations... this is part of the Winston brothers series and each story in it revolves around a different Winston sibling and their significant other :) they are a bunch of really fantastic contemporary romances and I highly recommend you them :) even though technically all of the can be read as standalones, I would advise you to read them in order... as in publication order... and here's why that's important... this particular novel, even though chronologically speaking it should be the first one, cause it happens when all of them are still kids, I think should be read like it was published, as in after book #5... I believe it will be a better experience for you if you already know these people as adults, especially because this one does not end well... let me explain... This is a prequel story to the conclusion of the series that goes live in less than two months... you know, the one about Billy Winston and Scarlet (or Claire, depends how you want to call her)... if you are a fan of the series, you already know that they both have feelings for each other, but they are not together... throughout the previous books there were glimpses and little teasers that all of that can be traced to something that happened in school... and I was very curious to finally get to know that story... and... well... I expected something more... or different... they don't spend that much time together... it's basically about one week... and it's hard for me to believe that just from that little time these strong feelings started that will overshadow both of their lives for so many years... I mean... they are both young (Scarlet is 14,5 and Billy about two years older than her) and I do remember that a lot of stuff feels monumental and like the end of the world at that age, so I don't blame them for the intensity of everything at the time... but I already know where it leads... and it feels like too much based on what happened... it feels like more of an obsessive sort of feelings and not real love... it's hard to explain without spoilers but I will do my best... both of them, even at that young age dealt with some mature and very hard stuff... we're talking a lot of pressure and responsibilities as well as different sort of abuse... so they are both more mature than you might think just based on their age... but at the same time, they are still young and sometimes react in a way that teenagers react to things... it's very difficult for me to rate this novel because it's not the end of their story, and I feel like once I read the last book in this series and see how their journey will end, then I might change my mind about this installment... because even though I have some issues about it, depending on how it will be handled in the next book, it might either be a great prequel showing flawed characters who later on finally learn to deal with all of this... or it will be a not-really-necessary addition to the series, because they will keep repeating the same mistakes... you can see my dilemma... *sighs heavily* so I decided to give this story a neutral 4 stars as I am waiting for the last novel to come out... once I read that one I have a feeling I will go back and edit this review, mabe even changing my rating along the way... it's hard to say what will happen, but I am doing my best to manage my expectations... because on the one had these types of second-chance romances are not my thing, but on the other hand, I have a lot of respect and trust for Penny Reid as an author, so I am patiently waiting to see how she will tell their story... there is a lot of potential for some really amazing things here and I hope we get to see that... that's all I can give you right now... besides this last warning: be prepared to cry and have your heart broken while reading this book, because as much as I had some issues with it, Penny's writing style is phenomenal and it made me very emotional while I was reading it... I couldn't handle reading too much in one sitting because it was too hard... it's a very sad story, so I am looking forward to see their happy ending soon... XOXO A ...more |

I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) I sincerely hope you have a moment of free time cause I certainly have quite a few thoughts and feelings to share about this book... after all, it's an end of a certain era with a conclusion to the Winston brothers series, which is definitely one of my all time favourites :) although if we're being perfectly honest, I was more than a bit hesitant going into this novel... not only it is the big conclusion, but it has a second chance romance trope which I am not the biggest fan of... why read the book then, you ask? that IS a great question, and I will answer it straight away :) I have two main reasons :) #1 it's Penny's book, and I will always give her a chance, because she already surprised me in the past in the best possible way with another trope I am not a fan of :) #2 it's the last book about I think the brother we know the least about and I was sooooo curious to see how his story will go... so I picked it up and couldn't be more happier that I gave it that chance cause man oh man... *sighs happily* it was such a wonderful book... my thoughts are still a bit scattered so I hope you will be understanding if this review will be a bit chaotic... plus, this is the conclusion of a series, but I am still determined to make it spoiler free and safe to read even if you are completely new to the series, so I might have to be a bit vague in certain places... ok, let's get into the review :) Winston brothers series takes place in fictional town of Green Valley in Tennessee and each novel (with one exception that I will mention in a minute) concentrates on a different sibling in a family of seven :) Ashley's story, which can be considered a sort of prequel, cause it's a part of Penny's other series, is the first one, and then we have all of her six brothers :) and as much as most of them can be read as standalones, I highly recommend you to read them in order to see how certain relationships change over time... when it comes to this last installment, you really should at least read some of the other books before diving into this one... preferably all of them :) but you absolutely have to read "Dr. strange beard" (Roscoe's book) and "Beard with me" (a sort of origin story about Billy and Scarlet and how they initially fell for one another while still in school) :) ok, now that we have some basic informations out of the way, let me try to explain all the reasons why I adored this novel :) This book is a happy ending twenty years in the making... as I mentioned before, I am not a fan of these types of stories... it is entirely connected to my own life experiences and personal preferences when it comes to books... I have no problem with authors who write these kind of stories and readers who love them... I just feel the need to express that this sort of novel needs to be truly exceptional for me to fall in love with it... and this one was... for oh so many reasons... so let's start with our main couple... since I couldn't decide who to talk about first I flipped a coin and Scarlet it is :) I know that the majority of you know her as Claire, but after reding that origin story book and this one, I can't think about her in any other way but only Scarlet :) she had such a horrible life... such a hard one... starting straight away with being raised in a motorcycle gang headquarters as the daughter of the president... becuase I promised you a spoiler free review, I will only say that after that, a lot of other hard things hppened to her and around her and it all lead her to life full of guilt and shame... fortunately, and I am always trying to mention it when I read about it in stories, she finally sought out professional help and is seeing a therapist to help her deal with all of the unhealthy coping mechanisms she had in her life... and even though she's a fictional character I was so proud of her for seeking that help and working towards getting better... then we have Billy... *sighs* ever since I started this series I knew that his story will be the one that will not only break, but completely shatter my heart before putting it all back together again... and I was soooo right... for me he's the epitome of the saying "still waters run deep" because there's just sooo many things beneath the surface with him... the second oldest in the family, for the longest time he was the man of the house... taking all that responsibility took its toll on him... again, because I don't want to spoil you things if you haven't read the rest of the series, I can't get into more details... so let's jump into my feelings about their relationship... After reading "Beard with me" I have to say I just couldn't understand it... seeing what exactly happened between Billy and Scarlet all those years ago I just couldn't see how that would justify all those years of complicated feelings, yearning and resentment... but in this book we learn that quite a few other things happend between that book and the first one in this series... and all I can say, I get it know... not only I get it, I absolutely understand it... in fact, my heart went out to both of them so many times during this novel... what life threw at them, how they handled it... there is just so much past... so much baggage... so many issues... just soooo much everything they need to handle and unpack to find their happy ending... I was seriously worried how it will happen in a healthy way so I can root for their happy ending... I'm very happy to report I loved the way Penny Reid told their story... the way she showed two flawed and complex people... who made decisions in the past, some of them bad and unhealthy that had so many consequences... how they were able to find their way to a happy ending and to each other... with a little help but more about that in a moment ;) mostly I was absolutely impressed by the way Penny portrayed them... and not only them but also some other people... how important it is to remember that no one is perfect and even the best of us can make mistakes, even when they believe they are doing what's right... how our perception of certain people is connected to the way we remember them and how time can change our perspective on things... how sometimes we need a lot of time to truly see and admit to ourselves that people weren't as good as we remember them... I know I'm being vague, but I really don't want to spoil you stuff so be patient with me ;) Because there is so much history and stuff between them and the more time passes the harder it is to deal with, the family decides it's time to intervene... and by family I mean Cletus decides it's time to help them :) he summons the rest of the family and shares his plan to finally speed things along :) what comes after is a whole lot of shenanigans, some of them more and some definitely less subtle... ;) but all of them so much fun :) so don't worry... yes, this book touches upon some very serious topics, but it's also full of absolutely hilarious scenes :) the sole reason why I am not diving into more informations about all of the siblings and their significant others is because if I would start we all would be here for days... yes, days... as in plural, cause I wouldn't be able to stop :) I already feel like I've been rambling for a while, so let's try to wrap this thing, shall we? :) If it would be another installment in the series, the story about Billy and Scarlett would probably be 4,5 stars one for me... but because it's the very last one and has so many scenes with other family members I just had to bump it to full 5 stars... and even if I had some doubts before the end, then the epilogue came... and it was such a beautiful cherry on top of an absolutely wonderful cake of a story that I just couldn't stop smiling when I was reading it... now that I know what happened in the past and how everything ends...how all of the siblings find their happy ending I am for sure gonna reread all of those books in the future... and by future I mean probably the second half of next year... with the knowledge I have know I would love to read all those stories and see them with a bit of new eyes... Penny Reid is an incredible author and I have to bow down to the way she told this particular story... and to the way she tells all of her stories... they are always different from one another, with characters that are complex and flawed... and I honestly think that now that I am a bit older I think I might feel differently about some of them... as in I might appreciate them more with a bit of a new perspective I have now... she's one of the very few authors I love to reread and I can't wait to experience the wonderful world of Winston family again in the future... have no worries, this conclusion was absolutely worth the wait... all those books, all the anticipation building over the years... this was the perfect conclusion to the series and an absolutely wonderful happy ending for Billy and Scarlet... *happily bows down* :) XOXO A ...more |

Usually when I write a review, I just write one version and copy it to other sites, but this time I had to add some spoilery thoughts :) so what you will see below is my review, spoiler free for everyone to read even if you are new to the series, and then only here on Goodreads I added a spoilery section at the bottom that will be initially hidden so you don't read anything by accident :) I hope you will enjoy it :) I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this is the fifth installment in Ella's Confessions series, and even though technically you can read it first, I would actually recommend you to read the previous four books, to get a better background about Henri's situation and his past... but, that being said, the first four books revolve around a relationship between three men, and I do understand that it might not be your cup of tea, soooo... the decision is yours :) what I will say is that I was hesitant before reading them as well, it wasn't until my sister read them first and highly recommended them to me that I actually gave them a try... and I really enjoyed them, so have that in mind as well ;) This is the first out of two books all about Henri and Bailey, so not everything is resolved in here, but worry not, the conclusion to this duet is going to be published in october, so there's not that much time to wait for it :) since nothing actually happens in it, well, there are some things, but it's mostly a contemporary romance sort of story about how they met and got together, so instead of focusing on events that I can't talk about, I will talk about the main characters and my thoughts and feelings about them... and there are a few, but I'm gonna have to be vague in some cases because I don't want to spoil you about stuff... We have two very interesting main characters... on the one hand we have Henri, a very mysterious man with an even more mysterious past... he's definitely a loner type, with ties to one of the guys from the trio I mentioned before... in case you are new to the series, I won't say anything else... for a guy that is mostly alone and keeps people at a distance, he's very charming when he wants to be ;) on the other hand we have Bailey, a police officer who I adored to pieces... he was so sweet and precious and I just... *sighs happily* theirs is definitely an opposites attract sort of romance, cause when they meet, we have some immediate sizzlingly hot sparks flying between them and it only grows from there :) I quite enjoyed this book, especially at the beginning... the more I read though, the more... I don't wanna say there were some problematic issues, but there were definitely things that bothered me... I can't talk about all of them in details, because that would involve some major spoilers, but I will say this... Henri keeps to himself for a reason, he doesn't have a normal past behind him... he did some stuff that are gonna come and bite him on the... you know where I'm going with it :) I don't know how certain things will resolve between him and Bailey, especially since Bailey is a cop... I guess we just have to wait and see how Ella Frank will explain everything in that second installment... another thing that I struggled with is how quickly they grew closer... especially when it comes to Henri... cause Bailey is a relationship kind of a person, so it felt natural for him to want that connection to grow... but Henri is a guy who for a very long time was hung up on someone else... as in even at the beginning of this book, soooo.... while I could understand the attraction he felt to Bailey, I couldn't really get behind of the idea how fast he started to fall for him... and then he did some things that I wasn't a fan of... like, I get the idea behind them, but they felt like a bit too much... sorry for being vague but that's all I can say without spoilers... all in all I really liked the book, the writing style was great as always and I flew through all the chapters, although I will admit that I wanted the story to be a bit longer, because it felt rushed in some places and I think it would benefit a bit from taking the time to build certain connections... I decided to give it 4 stars, although in truth it's more like 3,5 for me but I rounded it up because of the writing style and my faith that we will have a good conclusion to their story in october :) Like I mentioned at the very beginning of this review, here are all the spoilery thoughts I have about some stuff from the book, but again, be warned, I talk about spoilers from the whole novel and include informations from all previous books :) I usually don't do stuff like that, but maybe I will start doing it now, or maybe in some cases, because I have quite a few thoughts about this story that I couldn't express without spoilers :) so here they are: (view spoiler)[ #1 Henri and Bailey have great chemistry together... they decide to spend one night together to sort of get each other from their systems... yeah... that doesn't really work as well as they thought, but my first issue was about a week after that... they both decide to just not contact each other after that night, and even though they both think about one another it's Henri who makes the first move... and he shows up unannounced at Bailey's house and when he realizes that Bailey has some guests over, he decides to sneak around and look inside... I mean, he does call him soon enough, but this whole situation gave mo some stalker-ish vibes and made me feel iffy... like, I get that his intentions were good and not on the dangerous side, but still... and the fact that Bailey doesn't find it weird at all is beyond me... I mean, come on... you are a cop and should know better... #2 Henri as a charatcer is charming af and that makes it harder to realize that he has some serious issues... I mean, even at the beginning of this book he is still hung up on Priest... he sees how happy he is with Julien and Robbie, especially since the book starts with their wedding ceremony, but it still hurts him... which means he's not over him... and that's a pretty huge obstacle in the way of a new relationship... or so you would think... yeah... not really the case here... I mean, we see him struggling with those feelings a bit, but Bailey pretty quickly and surprisingly easily sneaks under his skin... which was a bit too much too fast for me... it was one of those things that would benefit from getting more time to built so it can be more believable... #3 Bailey is a very trusting cop... a bit too trusting if you ask me... especially when it comes to a guy he barely knows anything about... the further I got into the book the more it rubbed me the wrong way... like, come on, you don't even know what his job is... *sighs* #4 I have no clue how Ella Frank will resolve the fact that Henri killed Priest's father recently... I mean, I get that Jimmy was a horrible person... really bad one, but it was done in cold blood and not really in self defense... at least if I read that scene correctly, Jimmy was running away after kidnapping Julien and shooting Priest and Henri caught up to him and they talked for a moment and then he shot him... I just... I... I have no idea how in the world Bailey will be okay with him doing that... even if you take into consideration fact that Bailey is not a cop because it's his life's mission, he sort of fell into that job because both his father and older brother do it, but still... come on... I just don't see how this can have a happy ending for them... not to mention that what Henri did was just wrong... like, I know that he's supposed to be that guy from the shadows, doing some illegal stuff, balancing on the line between right and wrong, but this might be too much... I guess we'll just have to wait and see what I will think about the next book #5 there are a lot of things that are just teased in this installment and we basically don't get any more informations about them... like the fact that Henri has some werid connection to Bailey's older brother who is a detective... does he owe him something, did he saw him killing Jimmy and now he uses him with his investigations? does he just work with him? like, what's the deal? we learn very little about thier pasts... and based on how short this book was, I'm sort of afraid that the conclusion to their story will be short as well and there's just no way for us to get all the resolutions in a satisfying way if that will be the case... (hide spoiler)] Ok, those were all my spoilery thoughts :) I hope you enjoyed them and that they helped you decide if this is a book for you :) if you have any additional questions or thoughts, PM me :) XOXO A ...more |

I voluntarily reviewed an early copy of this book :) this was my very first book written by this author, and what a win from the start :) I originally decided to pick it up, because it has of one of my favourite tropes ever: fake relationship / marriage of convenience :) what I did not expect was such entertaining writing style and a main couple that will make me swoon :) so let's get into more details why you need to pick up this historical romance as soon as possible :) Georgiana "Georgie" Caversteed is in a dangerous position... an extremely wealthy heiress to a shipping empire, she chased away her fair share of fortune hunters over the years... and unfortunately her own cousin is getting more and more determined to put her in a situation where she will be forced to marry him... so what a girl can do to make the best of this? well, if you're Georgie, you come up with a plan... and what a plan it is :) she decides to marry a convict from Newgate prison who will be executed shortly after, so she can become a widow and live more freely in exchange for her helping his family and / or friends financially... what she did not expect is that she will encounter a man from the ton working there undercover... yeah, talk about surprises :) Benedict "Ben" Wylde is the second son of one of the earls, and since he can't blow his cover, and by the way, who would believe him even if he would admit to such thing while in prison ;) so he marries Georgie :) you can imagine her utter shock when she encounters him a few weeks later during one of the balls... ;) and because there is no easy way for them to stop being married without causing a scandal, and Georgie desperately wants to avoid that so she won't ruin her younger sister's reputation, they decide that the best course of action would be for Ben to court her publicly and propose at the end of the season, when they can have an official wedding and then go their separate ways ;) because we all know how that sort of plans go in stories like that... ;) This was such a delightful novel :) I did not expect how much I would fall in love with these characters and their story... Georgie was my favourite type of heroine to read about: smart and capable of doing things by herself :) not to mention how much she cares for her family, even though they don't always understand her... but there is a lot of love between them :) and then we have Ben... *sighs and swoons a little* ;) he came home from the war recently and started a gentleman's club with two best friends... and I can only assume that future books in this series will be all about them :) he was such a pleasant surprise for me... he's just... very charming, that's for sure... :) that's what makes it so much harder to concentrate on his other qualities :) especially since he likes to play this role of someone who is carefree and don't get attached to people... and that is so not true :) what I think I loved the most about this book is the relationship between Georgie and Ben... what starts as a misunderstanding and a marriage of convenience, slowly grows into something so much more... little by little Georgie gets under Ben's skin, because the more he gets to know her, the more he's not only charmed by her, but also very impressed... and they have to spend more time together, because I forgot to mention, that there is also a mystery aspect to this story ;) obviously, I can't get into more details about it but it involves a conspiracy, theft and all sort of dangerous encounters :) and during all that, not only Ben is more and more interested in Georgie, the same can be said about her... I mean, I can't blame her for falling for Ben... the way he treats her is absolutely lovely... he's not only charming but also acknowledges her mind and capabilities of actually accomplishing things on her own which for her is definitely a nice change :) besides the lovely relationship of our main couple, we get a small romance on the side ;) I won't spoil you who it will involve, but worry not it's also resolved in this installment :) I was very pleasantly surprised by the writing style in this book :) you never know what you will get when it comes to new authors, but I was hooked from the very first chapter and not only I am very eagerly looking forward to reading sequels to this book, I am definitely gonna check out other work by this talented author :) I highly encourage you to give this wonderful historical romance a try :) XOXO A ...more |
