Aleksandra is a zek, a gulag prisioner, and one day two officials come with a new mission for her, not as a sniper but as a talented contorsionist in a secret destination in another part of Siberia. It's that or dire consequences for her family , the usual threats.
The soviets are intrigued by an anomaly and want it explored . For Aleksandra is another camp, another mortal mission or maybe .... could be a possible scape.
The story is intriguing, but too short to further explore the true horror of the situation and the character's distress. It does well to express disconnect and coldness to deal with all of this, that of a betrayed soldier.

Arca is divided between citizens (old moneybags) , settlers (slaves labourers), and helpers (police force). Effie is a pretty smart girl in this Arca, she is a settler and near to 18 year old, the age when they go to other place to be citizens.
Here we find the classic story of the destruction of the Earth by our hands and how a group of billionaires decide to escape this fate and reach "Eden", but here a frank approach is made that I had not seen before of how they are going to still need (view spoiler)[their nannies, gardeners, and cheap labor to do all the work, this time without a clear form of payment. Ergo, they invent a slave class consisting of children and adolescents who do all the manual labor on the ship. (hide spoiler)]
Effie is a reader (a forbidden thing between settlers) and starts to ask all that pesky questions about her world and what happen next. Because, really?
There are some obvious things that are not explained, as the reproduction thing- I can't believe they are so ignorant about it (as well as the sex slaves thing is all gloss over, so I think this will be more for young adult public) . But in all is an entertaining story....more

Lets see, the story said that after an unknown apocalipsis, the Earth population have been reduced after a plague into ultra resistant barbarians apparently concerned only with eating everything on sight. Aliens called Krakau (of the octopus simile appeareance) arrived and found a cure for the 'ferals' , making them capable of some training as soldiers and maintenance personnel in their Alliance. But to the rest of the galaxy, humans have a reputation as monstrous cannibals, hard to kill, and barely sentient.
The Krakau have war conflicts against another species, the Podryans (a flying type of alien), and the 10.000 humans are Earth Mercenary Corps, the shook troops, and also the janitors of the ships.
It all begins when a rescue mission of the "Pufferfish" ship (all ships are named after deadly animals) leaves the entire human crew incapacitated, the officers dead, and only Lieutenant Marion "Mops" Adamopoulos of Hygiene and Sanitation in charge of everything along with four members: a veteran who doesn't want to fight anymore, a rookie who just wants to kick ass, one who wants to clean everything visible, and a technician who only cares about their video games and doesn't know why he should listen to humans.
There are a lot of sass in this novel and irony, but not humor precisely. Is a space opera with underdogs fighting against incredible stronger forces with more resources . For other part, the memos and guides directed to humans or about humans are redacted like the Krakau are treating with apes or more like gorillas. Like every conquerer treating with colonies of savages, I suppose; between scorn and patronizing.
Hines does a good job of describing other races of aliens, which differ from hominids. Tentacles and wings and armor, colors and crests that show emotions and ages, and certain idiosyncrasies.
But despite the fact that it treats issues lightly and tries to make comedy with some cultural situations, and blunders, I feel that it does not become a comedy because in the background is felt that something else is going on. Throughout the novel we are discovering something of that background, and, to tell the truth, it was already coming.
-I love that Mops likes to read and that she tries to pass the hobby on to his people, but I feel strange that they know the classics like Austen and Shakespeare through alien translations about what they understand by human culture (b/c why Austen, anyway, a more belicist author will made more sense after all). The reborn humans, after all, have lost all their history and all their cultural references. They only know that they have lost countless things that they will never recover, such as languages and their historicity. There is no concept of family as we understand it, they are removed from the Earth and turned into productive beings, but what happens with the rest of the humans? At one point Mops says that they are in extinction and it is well possible.
Mops is brilliant, and has to work with so little, none of them know how to pilot or read instruments designated for Krakau with tentacles. They stumble and drift through space as they try to save their crew, find a cure, and stop the terrorists... and did I mention that the Krakau believe she's in rebellion and that she's in cahoots with the terrorists?
<“You see, that’s where you lose my sympathy,” said Mops. “Humans may not be the smartest species in the galaxy. We struggle to wrap our brains around big, abstract concepts like centuries-long conspiracies. What we’re very good at is recognizing and responding to immediate threats. You attacked my ship. You infected a member of my team. That makes you the enemy.” “Shortsighted fools,” snarled Squarm. “Maybe.” Mops walked to the small toilet. With the lid sealed, the cube doubled as an uncomfortable stool, allowing her to rest her legs. Her lips quirked as a new idea began to come together. “But when you’re ready to apologize, you know where to find me.” The Glacidae stared at her through the door. “Apologize?” “And give us the cure.” Lowering her voice, she said, “I don’t care which comes first, the apology or the cure. Once we have both, I’ll consider letting you live.”
But with all the brilliance, at times the rhythm was lost and I had to struggle a bit to keep up. Anyway, I intend to read the next two.

“There’s a difference between security and freedom,” the Glacidae shot back. “Look at what they’ve done to your race. A population of ten thousand, embracing servitude to the very race that destroyed your civilization.”

If you say there are more Singers these days, how does that affect individual profit with so many cutting in the ranges?” asked Carigana.
“It doesn’t,” Borella replied, “not with the expanding galactic need for the communications link provided only by black quartz from Ballybran; not when Singers are capable, quick and cautious; not when there are people, like yourself, motivated to succeed in joining our select band.”
There are still factors not yet computed which cause only partial adaptation. I am compelled by FSP law to emphasize that.” “And then?” “That person obviously becomes one of the 20,007 technicians,” Shillawn said. (...) “And technicians never leave Ballybran.”
