me, at the beginning of the I finished this book and pretty much spent five minutes laughing at myself because this entire reading experience was like
me, at the beginning of the book: well sarah waters books always have plot twists, so i bet the plot twist is x sarah waters, through most of the book: girl its totes not me, 70% through: ok you have me convinced, and anyway i wouldn't want that plot twist anymore! sarah waters, 80% through: :) you :) don't :) say? :) me, 85% through: .........dont do it sarah waters, 95% through: GUESS WHAT THE PLOT TWIST IS me, a fool who fell for all of the lies: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
well played, sarah waters. well played.
this book would actually be something like 3-3.5 stars just because the first half was SOOOOOO SLOOOOOWWWWWWW but the second half really picked up the pace, and like i said, sarah waters played me like a fiddle....more

the last 10% of this book made me go from "hmmm nice" to "OOOO NIIIIIICE"
- this book is way more character (TWS FOR: rape, incest, pedophilia, abuse)
the last 10% of this book made me go from "hmmm nice" to "OOOO NIIIIIICE"
- this book is way more character driven than plot driven, the "mystery" doesn't rly have much importance outside of how it makes the characters grow/develop - the questions of morality were well done but nothing new to a book like this, however i wasnt at all expecting questions of sanity vs insanity irt rapists to appear in this book? that was really well done imo, like i said the last 10% of this book was rly well done - the suffrage movement only really appears here for like 2 secs (i say this bc i saw a lot of ppl talking abt how this book has "elements" of the suffrage movement in it... debatable), but feminist issues permeate the entire book, from its main plot to its background - actually this book is more about early feminism than any kind of "study about madness". there are brief discussions about madness vs lucidity, and sanity vs insanity, but all framed by a feminist lens. - i was skeptical about doctor dude but actually he ended up being one of my favorite characters, good job mindy - but dont worry everyone, there really is no love story here. the doctor and the protag really are just friends, not even a HINT of romance in the air, i promise - i felt like the timeskips were really abrupt, which is a shame bc theyre used a lot in the narrative - some of the dialogue felt kinda stilted/forced sometimes...more
