Jaws lived up to all its expectations! Jaws had me spell bound despite the fact that I absolutely love sharks, and they are the supreme apex predators in our oceans and vitally important to the health of our reefs and oceans in general! The book Jaws is a far different feel and story than Spielberg’s cult classic.
The cult classic really did a disservice to sharks' reputation, where more people 'die of electric toasters' yearly than shark attacks! Immediately after the movie, great whites were decimated, almost with a vengeance- and currently 80-100 million sharks are exterminated yearly. A travesty and something that will lead to irreversible changes to our ocean ecosystem!
The book, on its own merit, did not make the entire shark as a nefarious and human eating fish. The book really told the story of this 'one' specific shark, that terrorized bathers near the Hamptons. The plot revolves around the 'sheriff', and the town officers- who need the seasonal work and revenue to maintain the city alive. So despite humans being attacked and some killed by that one shark- they keep the beaches open- and all hell breaks loose.
This was an enjoyable read- yet I hope people understand its just fiction. I scuba dive and see all different types of sharks, and they're the most wonderful, supreme apex predators in the ocean - who should be revered and respected. ...more

Another bizarre and macabre look into horror genre's most talented author, Sir Stephen King! This one has some very twisted plots including a maniacal sheriff, and indiscriminate murder in a little remote town of 'Desperation'. The narrative is engaging and the story moves fast paced, but some inconsistencies in the middle robbed it from higher rate. Still lots of 'horrific fun', for those SK fans out there! ...more

This time, SK puts us in the mind of Edgar Freemantle, as his life goes through a 'whirlwind' of events, and he finds solace in the small island of Duma Key in Florida. The usual jaw-dropping, 'Kingsonian' events occur, as 'Ed' takes on peculiar powers in his ability to sketch and paint. His painting transcends reason and the laws of physics, and what we have is magical uncanny ability to predict the future. Awesome King stuff as usual.
The narrative is fantastic, and Ed's friendship with next door neighbor 'Wireman' is quite endearing, and funny as hell. Ungodly thinks take place in Duma Key, and you can believe that Ed and his 'cumpadre' are at the epicenter of it all! It all boils down in a fantastic series of events that left me shook by the end!
Another classic and must-read from the extraordinary Stephen King. Perfect for Halloween month!

What you get when you get a bunch of kids with paranormal powers, an evil institution with nefarious intentions and likely the world's greatest writer? Perfection! This is what was mostly resonant in The Institute, Stephen King's latest invention, creation, masterpiece. I mean it all comes down to one simple and absolute truth:
SK WRITES KIDS REALLY WELL!!
The Institute was nothing short of a perfect blend of 'Stranger Things' with previous elements of his inspired years with classics such as 'IT' and 'Stand by Me'. I mean, the dude really knows how chracterize kids, from their behaviors (with other kids and adults), their incredibly difficult unique 'language' with one another specially humor. SK really shrunk me down into a 14 year kid as I read The Institute, it was that good!
The Institute was nothing short of horrifying! It has no ghosts, no vampires, no diabolical entities from the otherworld. What makes the novel so dark and effective, is that apart from the amazing characterization of all kids (specially the protagonist 'Luke'), we see the tormenting and torturing of innocent children. And those doing the unimaginable horror to these kids, are people that look much like you and me!
The premise was simple: a bunch of kids with both 'telekinetic' and 'telepathic' abilities are abducted by bunch of super-secretive governmental assholes, and placed in terrifying school for the gifted, named 'The Institute'. There, the kids are systematically brain-washed and used as guinea pigs in multiple experiments. The novel certainly has parts that are difficult to get through- but SK does it in a respectful manner- and always with a purpose of storytelling. None of the violence is gratuitous, and it all allows the reader to root that much more for these kids. It's really genius writing.
How do you maintain your dignity and your humanity in an environment designed to strip you of both? How do the humans in charge of the 'Institute' internalize their actions, and regard the abuse of children as, first, a necessary evil, and then, finally, as a matter of routine? These and many questions and different themes are tackled in the novel. The writing is fresh and dynamic, and there are some very nice 'adult' characters that add much to the story. The storyline heats up to a scorching conclusion where all the parts just fit organically, and I was left thrilled and begging for more!
In The Institute Stephen King returns to his 'classic form', in and incredibly powerful, dark yet entertaining novel that will go down as one of his best!

For those of you about to embark in the ‘14 book’ experience bew14 was easily the strangest and the most wild ride book-experiences I’ve read in 2019!
For those of you about to embark in the ‘14 book’ experience beware:
It’s a crazy messed up roller coaster ride, which will either leave you breathless and laughing or puking your guts out by the end!!
No. really. It’s that type of a book! I knew as little as possible going into the book, and as the pages flew by, I kept asking myself: what the fudge am I reading?? To characterize the book in the ‘horror’ genre, or sci-fi would be a little disservice. The book is a true ‘melting pot’ of horror (the spooky ‘holy shit’ type), sci-fi ( time-space continuum stuff), mystery, thriller, and many others!
Peter Clines does a superb job in hooking the reader with a multi-layer horror/thriller from the very first page to the last! There were so many crazy ‘twists’ imbued in the story, that when Clines finally lays it out thick I was stupefied!
In a nutshell, the book is about ‘Nate’. Nate is a single dude, struggling to get by in Los Angeles when he suddenly has to move out. Nate strikes gold, when he finds a super cheap rental in a lovely brownstone called the Kavach building. From the offset everything is hunky dory, but looks could be deceiving...uauauauaua!!

Everything about ‘14’ struck the right chord! The characters well developed and flushed out. Nate, is a fun very realistic protagonist who you can’t help but root for the whole time! The rest of the characters were so unique, and came in all genders, ethnicities and ages. Clines, really does a superb job at making all characters feel ‘real’, and some of them you really hate or love as the story unfolds.
Unquestionably, my favorite part of the book experience was unraveling the ‘mystery’! As a famous movie once said, ‘life is like a box of chocolates’; well in ‘14’ the story was the box of chocolates, and each mystery revealed was a different flavored and textured chocolate. Some were nice and sweet, yet some just tasted like shi….

'14' is a fantastic, mystery-horror-sci/fi story which will leave you yearning for more, which literally knocked my head off!
