Heartfelt, enduring, magical, powerful and yes tearjerker, but in a way that made me feel content. Megs and George are the best kind of siblings and I felt like I was right there with them in George's bedroom and in imagination. I didn't know much about the childhood of C.S. Lewis and was fascinated to learn what impacted the man who would be known to the world as an author, most importantly of The Chronicles of Narnia. This is a book I plan to read again and again, as well as the entire Narnia series....more
Amazing, fantastic, a split-time page-turner! I could go on and on. This is one of the best books I have ever read! And by far the absolute best book Amazing, fantastic, a split-time page-turner! I could go on and on. This is one of the best books I have ever read! And by far the absolute best book Katherine Reay has written. Well-researched and character driven, the story just kept adding more and more layers of intrigue and secrets. The historical aspect of the story was told via letters and diary entries by the main character, Caroline's, grandmother and great-aunt. In present day we see how the events of one day in 1941 can change the course of one family for multiple generations. And how trying to unlock the secrets and heartache of the past can have unimaginable consequences. Even if you're not a huge historical fan, I still recommend this novel. The past and the present are so seamlessly interwoven and emotionally charged. If I could give it 10 stars I would!...more

With tons of information about the Klondike gold rush, it shares the story of Jasper and his brother Melvin who end up following the rush in their search for gold. One of the best aspects of this book is the relationship between Jasper and Mel. Through all their adventure and troubles, they stick together and trust each other like only brothers can. It amazed me at all the hardships they endured. Without giving anything away, the ending was a surprise too, and I love when book endings surprise me! I enjoyed this story and think middle-graders will especially love reading Jasper's tale.
I received an ARC from the author for my honest opinion. All thoughts are my own....more
