Often my greatest struggle is making it through the books of the law such as Leviticus and Numbers. Reading them so close in time to the New Testament teachings of Jesus allowed me a new perspective on God’s love within the law and His heart for His people. The Bible is an incredibly powerful book with foundations within that set the basis for how we can and should live our lives but, more importantly, the relationship we were created to have with God and the journey and long suffering He has undertaken in order to bring us back to Him. The NIV study Bible is a fantastic translation that is easy to read and does not block the reader with the terminology and language used while also unraveling the message of the words intended by their authors. ...more

The end of tMy piece of advice to anyone about to read this book or anyone who has read it and is yet to move through the series is to keep on going! The end of this book will make you want to throw the book at the wall and yell at the characters and never pick it up again but I promise you, pick up the sequel and keep on going! One of the incredible talents of Francine Rivers’ writing is her ability to make characters come to life. To make the reader so totally invested in the individuals and their journeys that the books become a tumultuous emotional rollercoaster unlike most others out there.
As the story opens we are introduced to Hadassah. A Christian Jew living in Jerusalem in the time of the fall of Jerusalem and the Roman invasion. We follow her journey through the book that takes her from someone who considers herself the weakest and of least faith in her family, and from a girl to a woman as she finds herself and her God. We also follow the story of Marcus - a young Roman from a prestigious family - and his family, their gods and ways of living in this rich affluent lifestyle so at odds with the tragedies of Jerusalem at that time. Thirdly we learn of and travel with Atretes - a leader and warrior of his clan in Germania. Trapped and captured he is transported to Rome and forced to become a gladiator for the amusement of the people.

Taken into the world of prostitution as just a child, this story follows Angel, a woman who has lost all faith in God, men, and any goodness in humanity. This story shows the transformative power of love, patience and compassion, and is a truly inspirational story outlying Gods love. It deals with some difficult questions of where God is in the tough times and how a God allows suffering to happen but does it in such a heartbreaking and beautiful way.
I have cried many tears over this book and I’m sure I will cry many more in future reads. This is definitely not a “read once and not again” one. A must read for both Christians and those not sure about faith purely for the beauty of the story and the restorative compassion shown through Michael....more
