Um hino à escrita e miscigenação dos vários tipos de cultura, um marco no meio dos marcos da literatura universal; puro boom latino-americano literário.

No final dos anos 60, numa região rural, há uma família que marca presença em funerais, mesmo quando não conhece bem o morto, para chorar em coro e discursar no enterro. Por vezes, dão também uma perninha em festas de aniversário. Esta arte é, no entanto, treinada em casa com auxílio de livros e músicas tristes.
A Eucleia e João Reis trazem-nos a primeira tradução portuguesa de um romance que, por vezes, roça o sublime. Erling Jepsen, (n. 1956, Gran, Dinamarca) apresenta-nos em A Arte de Chorar em Coro a vida vista por Allan, um menino de 11 anos que pretende seguir as pisadas do pai e tornar-se um bom orador fúnebre. Allan, como todas as crianças da sua idade, ocasionalmente leva tareias - «Dói, claro, mas não me incomoda demasiado; desde que ninguém o veja.» - e brinca com os amigos, mas é a sua família que importa realmente, mais que tudo. Depois, há ainda o Tarzan e o arcanjo Gabriel que o ajudam no dia-a-dia e durante o sono. Depois disso, vem Gazan Tarriel, a fusão natural entre o arcanjo e o homem da selva, uma espécie de super herói com poderes metafísicos, que Allan crê realizar os seus desejos, mesmo os pedidos mais mauzinhos.
O ponto forte do romance reside na forma como o menino vê o mundo - vê-o sempre com uma “inocência” que só as crianças experienciam, mesmo quando leva tareias: «E recomeça, mas não como antes; agora começa a bater depressa, depois devagar e, em seguida, outra vez depressa, sem nenhum ritmo, e uma vez até falha o golpe! (…)» (pág. 59) -, e no humor que Jepsen utiliza - «O pai tem medo que seja maricas: o que significará isso? A mãe diz que não, que as coisas são assim nas cidades grandes; comem com faca e garfo todos os dias, como nas festas.» (pág. 61). Ah, as crianças são mesmo muito “inocentes”: «Será que o Asger [irmão mais velho de Allan] não compreende que há um motivo para que o pai e a Sanne [a irmã] durmam juntos no sofá? Deveria considerar o que aconteceria se não o fizessem. Como se sentiria o pai?» (pág. 65)
Afinal de contas, amigo Shakespeare, não há nada de podre no reino da Dinamarca, como comprova este excelente romance.
«- Ele tinha uma erecção? Não sei bem o que quer dizer com essa palavra. - Quando estavam a tocar-se no quarto, sem roupa nenhuma, ele tinha a pilinha para cima? - Não sei – respondo -, não vi.» (pág. 227)
Apesar da disfuncionalidade apresentada – encesto, tragédia, morte, funerais -, A Arte de Chorar em Coro é tudo menos triste. Uma ode à boa disposição em tons sérios que nos fazem reflectir sobre a «gravidade da vida».

Baseado em eventos da sua própria vida, Osamu Dazai construiu aqui um romance opressor – para o leitor – e cru que ainda hoje é considerado um ícone e best-seller em terras nipónicas.
«De facto, quanto mais cuidadosamente examinas o rosto sorridente da criança, mais sentes um horror indescritível e atroz a trepar por ti acima. Vês que, na verdade, não é, de todo, um rosto sorridente. O rapaz não tem um único indício de um sorriso.» (pág. 10): esta criança é Yozo, personagem central de todo o romance, um indivíduo que cria uma espécie de máscara de ferro para enganar todos os que o rodeiam. Incapaz de ser feliz, o jovem Yozo finge sorrisos, inventa felicidade, faz «palhaçadas» para se inserir numa sociedade que o rejeita. Este distanciamento social resulta muito provavelmente da ausência de uma figura paterna no seu crescimento infantil: «Mesmo quando o meu pai e eu vivíamos na mesma casa, ele mantinha-se tão ocupado a receber convidados ou a sair que, por vezes, decorriam três ou quatro dias sem nos vermos. Isto, todavia, não tornou a sua presença menos opressiva e intimidante.» (pág. 50).
À medida que cresce e falha na vida, à medida que o desespero e o negativismo se apoderam da mente de Yozo, coisas más acontecem não só a si mesmo, como também aos que o rodeiam. A desesperante descida aos infernos e gradual auto-destruição combinada com perda de sentimentos pela vida alheia inclui uma tentativa de suicídio com uma rapariga, ainda que só morra a amiga (curiosamente, na vida real o autor suicida-se juntamente com a sua companheira em 1948), alcoolismo extremo , morfina e perda de lucidez entre o real e a loucura. Não importa nada, simplesmente.
De página para página, a dor e a insustentabilidade face ao quotidiano aumentam. Não sendo difícil de adivinhar o desfecho do final da obra, Não Humano transmite uma carga tão negativa e pesada que obriga o leitor a sentir compaixão pelo anti-herói Yozo (e também Osamu Dazai).

Tendo como palco principal os bairros da classe operária berlinense, Alfred Döblin (1878 – 1957) assinalou, em 1929, esta grande epopeia citadina em pleno auge da industrialização alemã que alterou, não só a vida profissional, mas também o comportamento social dos habitantes; a agitação da cidade moderna, os tumultos causados pelo crescimento do sentimento anti-semita/pró-fascista e o papel do ex-criminoso de volta à vida social são o prato forte deste estupendo romance.
Döblin refere no posfácio que ou Berlim mudava, ou Franz teria que mudar. Como é óbvio, não será um sujeito que acaba de sair da prisão que vai mudar uma metrópole: é Franz quem tem o dever de se adaptar às circunstâncias. E o que pode fazer um ex-condenado para viver? Não muito; Franz, apoiado por alguns amigos da má vida – gente criminosa e desonesta – ganha a vida a vender jornais de propaganda anti-semita que a extrema-direita alemã usa para ganhar votos no seio de uma população descontente – para piorar, a industrialização e o seu sistema capitalista vieram agravar ainda mais as desigualdades, como se sabe -, sem que, no entanto, o salário chegue para cobrir as despesas de um indivíduo que não vive propriamente confortável. É, novamente, o regresso à vida criminosa e uns trabalhinhos “isentos de impostos”, aliados ao proxenetismo que ajudam a desafogar as finanças do anti-herói - «assaltante», «chulo» e «assassino», recordo. Porém, o crime não compensa da forma que Franz desejaria, agravando-lhe ainda mais a precariedade em que vive.
A escrita modernista de Berlim Alexanderplatz, recheada de sons e calão urbano, rápida e intensa, torna-se sufocante, transportando o leitor para o caos de uma Berlim incapaz de lidar com a mudança do paradigma industrial, impotente perante a hostilidade nazi – em quem os habitantes viam a salvação da economia. Döblin imprime uma maior velocidade e confusão através do fluxo de consciência -tal como Joyce e Edouard Dujardin, entre outros, requerindo, dessa forma, uma leitura mais atenta: «Então Franz sente que basta. Boceja. Apetece-lhe ir fazer ó-ó. Pois é, isto aqui em Tegel, mas pr’a que é qu’eu vim, o qu’é qu’eu aqui vim fazer? os pensamentos atropelam-se-lhe uns nos outros, tenho d’ir pr’á caminha, o resto são lérias.» (pág. 366).
Banido na Alemanha durante o regime de Hitler, Berlim Alexanderplatz é um best-seller germânico imperdível.

A vida deste muda radicalmente no dia em que conhece um misterioso cavalheiro que lhe oferece uma milionária soma de dinheiro para escrever um livro: Martín deixa a vida de pobre para viver faustosamente numa velha casa da torre.
Contextualizando, a estória do romance passa-se sensivelmente alguns anos antes do romance anterior A Sombra do Vento, nos belos bairros góticos de Barcelona onde se cruzam Don Gustavo Barceló, a família Sempere, Isaac Monfort e outras personagens já conhecidas do primeiro capítulo da saga. A Sombra do Vento dá-nos uma Barcelona airosa, mágica e inesquecível, ao passo que aqui a descrição incide bem mais numa cidade lúgubre, perigoso e onde o mal pode atacar a qualquer momento, e este é um dos aspectos que mais marcam a obra.
Quando David Martín se dispõe a escrever um livro sobre religião e novos mitos para Andreas Corelli, a sua vida muda radicalmente pois – e sem que o nosso protagonista o saiba – a sua alma fica amaldiçoada para todo o sempre e várias pessoas à sua volta morrem. Estes pozinhos de fantasia e oculto que Zafón implementa na obra adensam uma narrativa sombria mas de diálogos fantásticos e inteligentes, particularmente nas conversas que Martín tem com Isabella – uma adolescente que quer aprender a escrever livros –, Corelli e a família Sempere.
Em termos globais, este Jogo do Anjo agarrou-me da mesma forma que a sua irmã Sombra do Vento, mas sem me deixar com o queixo tão caído. Agora resta-me ler O Prisioneiro do Céu e fechar a saga em glória.
