This volume was exquisite, but could have done without the last 6-page arc. It wasn't the material that troubled me, but rather the artwork. Ah, well. It wasn't a pretty subject, so I guess it didn't have to look pretty, either. ...more

Another one from childhood...
I liked Frances. I really did. Though I was never too sure if Frances was a he or a she.Maybe it was the ambiguity that I liked.
But I remember reading the books over and over, and one time Frances would be a he, and another time she, and it gave the stories different tones I thought. ...more

It was a cute story about how the littlest one can sometimes be the best of all, and if you grow up humble, you will be loved.
Or something like that.
Will have to borrow this from the library for the little one, and see this again....more

This is a fun book for my 2-year-old that got picked up in one of the library bag sales. I'm usually not much for this kind of 'gimmicky' thing (anyone else remember Hooked on Phonics?) but my daughter likes to play school, and 'teach' her daddy to read. So cute!...more

My dad's wife decided at one point to stop patronizing regular libraries (thankfully that phase didn't last long), and she started going to this tiny religious library/second hand store. It was weird, but they had books I hadn't read before.
This was one the books available, and supposedly had a religious theme. I don't remember that. I do remember the girl taking off in the middle of the night, and thinking about how much trouble I would be in if I tried the same thing. Book families are always so much more understanding, it seemed.
But this was similar enough to The Black Stallion books for me to enjoy. Fortunately, though, by the time I was through most of the limited books available, we were back in the public libraries. ...more

This wasn't quite as good as some of the other ones in this series. (view spoiler)[Thunder only makes a quick appearance. (hide spoiler)] For this I would give it three stars. But the message was a good one, and the final trial smart, so I willingly bumped it to four.
Now to dig through my stuff and find my older daughter's cards and stuff... Time for her little sister to find North of North!...more

This is the book that started it all... An obsession that lasted YEARS. Even now... I still have these books boxed and tucked away in storage. (One of these days I'm going to have to go pull everything out and go through it all - even I don't know what all I got in there anymore. Just the main stuff really...)
Anyways, I think I know what next year will bring, but that'll be for another post, not this here.
This is the first in a long running series. Probably one of the best running series for horse crazy girls out there (behind Farley's Black Stallion and Island Stallion books). I tried several over the years, and this was easily my favorite series.
As the first book, it was a bit weak as a stand-alone, but it's also got the weight of the entire series behind it (as well as a spin-off series for older readers).
As an unofficial member of the Saddle Club, I give this a resounding Yee-haw! lol...more
