I really loved this book, beautifully described journeys and intertwined with historical context and informed prose. However it did irk me somewhat an
I really loved this book, beautifully described journeys and intertwined with historical context and informed prose. However it did irk me somewhat and I would love to read a similar book written by a woman. Whilst Robert did reference some female walkers/explorers/writers it felt a very masculine self indulgence of a book. He came across as a 'typical' MAMIL lucky enough to be able to indulge on walks/cycling of 'personal discovery' and I couldn't shake off the feeling of superiority he shaped. This was particularly present in the chapter about the very odd couple whose art consisted of taxidermy. I have little patience for those lucky enough to be able to lead a life of freedom but seem to think this gives them the right to be self indulgent, but Macfarlane seemed to think that the oddness in itself if somehow something to be revered, when in reality there was little philosophical or intellectual value in it. Furthermore this feeling wasn't curtailed as later he describes more about his idol Edward Thomas. He also appeared to have the luxury to be self indulgent whilst his wife was busy picking up the pieces at home. Macfarlane reveres Thomas and I get a keen sense that Macfarlane aspires to be some alpha male leading where no man has ever gone before making discoveries that only alpha males like him can understand. He repeated constantly the role of Thomas' wife as trundling along next to him learning and listening and indulging her husband. I strongly suspect that his wife was as strong , as intelligent and as capable of philosophical thought as he was and did not need mansplaining to!! A fantastic book but I should like to meet Mcfarlane's wife.
